@@speaktruth9313Half of your meals should be veggies and fruits which should combat the constipation. Also, fish and eggs are way less constipating than chicken.
My father is from Greece and has always eaten the Mediterranean diet he grew up on. He’s a healthy, slim, active, 94-years old and needs no medication! He eats lots of fish, salad and other veggies, legumes, and fruit, and occasionally a little meat. He does eat a single piece of bread with each meal, but he is a man and 6-ft. tall, so he needs more food than, say, I do, at only 5’4” tall. Only traditional sourdough bread in the US is still made without sugar, so that’s what he eats (and all I eat, if I eat any, but it’s a rare treat for me). But, real sourdough bread is only available west of the Rockies, generally. When I went to grad school in the Midwest, I couldn’t find any bread without sugar in it and really missed our San Francisco sourdough. Since the low-fat craze, brands use more sugar than ever, it’s a dirt-cheap substitute for healthier ingredients. I don’t like cake-sweet bread, if I wanted cake, I would just have a piece of a nice cake instead. With the huge diabetes epidemic in this country, US, it’s best to stop eating sugar. Indeed, it meets the criteria fir a human toxin, we wouldn’t think of eating other substances that do!
I grew up in Greece and didn’t gain any weight until I moved to America. It is a better lifestyle and food in Greece and many other countries due to consumption of healthy unprocessed food in other countries. America is full of processed and junk food. Wry little is natural. Also u can’t get anywhere without a car in America. Other countries have good public transit
Greek food is the best in the world because the way Greeks act in their life is what they know from older generations and the older generations learned from the generations before them and so on. So it is traditional to eat healthy foods, Greek foods only which are the healthiest Mediterranean food. It’s a thing. My mother who is British married my father and saw that Greek food is the best. You feel better and healthier. I will not change it for anything. But I love to taste from other countries too. Because each country has its own way of cooking. I I am a big foodie. Without forgetting the Greek ways. “ A healthy mind in a healthy body “. Which means READ GOOD BOOKS , BE ACTIVE AND EAT GOOD FOOD.
I make sourdough bread with fresh ground flour (I have a grain mill) & I'm east of the Rockies ;). We can get it in a local supermarket (real sourdough) but it's pretty rare. I imagine you can get it at a good bakery in Boston or NY.
@@bcassinebcassine Comments like yours are so valuable. Your English is very good. God bless you for speaking up. Sadly the worldwide "news" is very skewed.
I made a few little changes like reduce my sugar in my coffee, reduced my meal portions and stopped having seconds. I also reduced my carbohydrates intake and that alone helped me drop 7kg in about 4 months without exercise.
I am 53 years old and I agree with almost everything you told. I don´t take any hormones but I would take them if I would have a lot of problems with my menopause. I eat like you explain and I move a lot but I also think that it is very important that we are able to accept that we all get older. The secret is to care yourself and do the best of your life with a lot of positive thinking.
I live in the U. S. and most people here would be shocked by what a serving size of any food truly looks like. A serving size on most cereal packages is one cup with half a cup of milk. We typically eat 2-3 times that amount. Restaurant portions are obscene. I wasn't raised to eat like that. It was reasonable portions, served three times a day, no snacks and stop eating when full.
When I went to live in America for a couple of years, I was amazed and horrified at the portions. I'd order some main dish and it would be enough to feed a family of four!
If we Americans want to avoid sugar, we have to avoid processed foods altogether, they are packed with it. They even put sugar in things like prepared salad dressings and mayonnaise, they taste disgusting! I lost 50 lbs. over the last 5-10 years by giving up all forms of sugar (manufacturers use all sorts of names for it), most carbs. and a daily walk. I’m 64 and it wasn’t all that difficult, really, but it’s gradual. I noticed that this last year, because I couldn’t walk as much, I look and feel fatter, but I haven’t gained any weight. I think its from loss of muscle mass and increase of body fat. I need to push myself to walk a bit more and, I think, eat more protein, I rely too much more on dairy foods for that. Great advice, thanks, Alice❤
If you increase your protein and start lifting weights not only will you regain lost muscle you will also gain an astonishing amount of energy. I used to collapse on the couch after work for the whole rest of the evening after dinner. Now I"m on the couch for 15 min and keep popping up to ... do the laundry, clean the kitchen, run the vacuum, go for an after dinner stroll etc etc as I'm genuinely bounding with energy. Not sure if it's the protein, the weight lifting or both but it's been amazing. I've also cut massively back on any carb with a high glycemic load - so pasta, rice, etc. I think this has really helped stabilize my blood sugar so that it's more even all the time?? Anyway moods better, energy better and 1.5 inches of belly fat gone bye bye :-) Good luck on your own journey!
Sugar is so pervasive in American food, you'll be shocked to find out that there's even sugar in table salt. Go check your cupboard right now, you'll see it has dextrose in it, which is sugar.
I kept repeating that pasta, bread and carbs are full of sugar and should be consume very very moderately. Pasta diet is not healthy. I had massive backlash saying that carbs and gluten is not sugar and bla bla. Glad to hear it
@@Aliceinparisofficial Aww, sorry to hear that Alice. This reveals how poor our nutritional knowledge is. Any qualified dietician would say the same - these are very simple processed carbs which convert very quickly to blood sugar. And such foods have been massively processed to the extent that they couldn't be sold without adding in a load of vitamins to make them look nutritionally worthwhile.

I'll be 65 in a week and have been on bioidentical HRT for about 15 years. Since menopause I have gained about 8-10 pounds on my petite frame, all of it around my waist. However, over the past 6 months I have reduced my alcohol intake, ramped up my exercise regimen, changed my diet to include more vegetables and reduce sugars and to eat more proteins and healthy fats, and I have lost 4-5 pounds again. Still have the love handles, but am hoping some of that will come off. I love the idea of cooking meals at home and setting a beautiful table (we did that during Covid --date night at home) and especially slowing down to enjoy life! What a fabulous way to live!
You are past 60. Give yourself a break. Women are expected to measure up to absurd beauty standards. That needs to stop. I am Portuguese and petite, have been so all my life. Even after 3 children. But after menopause, I got a thicker waist. No problem. It's natural. I will not do a damn thing about that, except the reasonable walking or bike riding every day, and eating sensibly which to me, is Mediterranean, since that is basic in my native country. We women have to STOP THE MADNESS of looking perfect and like we are 25 all our life. Men in my country don't like skinny women. They love a meaty butt, hips, and boobs. They want to hold and squeeze softness, not cartilage and bones. Same in latin countries, same in African countries. More traditional men prefer more natural traditional women. They like the NATURAL female shape. They don't mind a little belly. Look at all the beautiful classic art. But even if men liked something else, I don't care. My body, my choice. I like my body. I am grateful for it. A friend of mine in LA has big hips and thick legs. Her hair is also thick and long. She is gorgeous, but she was worried that she was too wide. But she met a guy from Germany, and he absolutely LOVES her thick shape. He said that there aren't many beautiful women like that in Germany. Loosing 5 lbs doesn't make a dent anyway. It can be just water weight. Gaining 10 lbs is okay if you are within your range. Health is the most important. You can enjoy cakes now and then, it will not kill you. Enjoy life. When it's your turn to go, you are going to go, skinny or fat, an athlete or a couch potato, young or old. Focus on what actually matters: you, family, friends, good food, health, sunshine, nature, enjoying yourself. Ignore the pressure and obsession with thinness and perfection. Take care.
HRT did not help u lose belly fats? The doc told me belly fats is there to produce the hormones we lose when we reach menopause.

With respect, Europeans tend to be too self-congratulatory when it comes to their healthy lifestyle, mistaking good fortune for wisdom. Unlike most Americans, those living in the Mediterranean enjoy pleasant weather year round; safe, beautiful cities in which to walk; seemingly endless vacations; and cheap, beautiful produce which is sold on every corner. To this we may add harmonious families (endlessly prosperous parents who've long since retired, have unlimited time to care for grandchildren, and frequently cook lovely, nutritious meals for their adult children) and generous government subsidies (in healthcare, university education, and unemployment benefits, which often last for years on end). Life in the US is objectively more difficult according to many measures. I wish Europeans would endeavor to understand this (as an American living in Spain, I can confirm that most do not).
I❤ all these tips even if you are not 50 yet, it never hurts to incorporate healthy living habits to prepare for when that time comes 😊 thank you Alice❣️
Im 41 and already noticed how easy it is to put on weight when sugar is in your diet even whilst working out! I recently cut it out and lost the weight from that only! Still in the process now!
Bon soir Alice, you are right. I am 59 and during my fifties I changed my lifestyle. And that was my best decission! Except meat, I am a vegetarian, I follow most of your tipps😊 Greetings from Germany
Thanks these tips are so helpful! I always wondered what French women do to look great. A lot of it is so simple and some of us like me that turned 50 do like to cook at home and prefer natural remedies. But the portion control and processed foods is a challenge when you live here.
Thank you for another French lifestyle video, Alice. I cook at home and eat a Mediterranean diet. I am not hungry in the morning, and just have coffee with collagen powder in the morning. I try to minimize sugar, too, but do have a real dessert once a week. I live in the country, and need my car to drive to work, but I really wish I could walk to and from there instead . I take Pilates classes and have a reformer at home.
Now that I have changed my diet to plant based/whole foods I have seen a huge difference in my energy and skin. And I learned that I was deficient in Vitamin D so my dermatologist said not to put sunscreen on until the UV index is 3 or above which is easy to track on your phone ( look at the weather app on your phone and just scroll down for the UV index for that day). And exercise is very important. Thank you Alice for sharing the French way!
UVA rays, which penetrate deep into the dermis, and cause wrinkles, are present even on a cloudy day. If you don’t want wrinkles and skin cancer, wear sunscreen and sun protective clothing daily. Vitamin D3/K2 can be orally supplemented to healthy levels.
Thanks for the magnesium tip! When I try to sleep, I keep getting hot flashes, even though my nightwear and bedding are as light as possible and I keep the room cool. I even have some Mg supplements already (for muscle cramps, which I get in my feet sometimes), I’m going to try this tonight!
****HRT is no longer made from horse urine, which it was in the past. These days the type of oestrogen used is typically 17 beta-estradiol, which is made from yams. You put Dr. Mary Claire Haver in your clip; surprising you didn't have the correct information re: hormones
Hi Alice - yes I agree with you. In the US the portions are very large. The dr. don't help when you tell them you are going through menopause. Or you will be recommended to take medication that is bad for a person with many side effects. I love the French women way of living life. I'm an American with French roots in both my parents family history. I love the French cooking. Thank you. Joni from Boston
American women over 50 look better. Loosing too much weight makes you look older. Caterine Deneuve once said: "At a certain age, you have to choose between your face and your ass." But I think that nowadays, you can have both if you have the money for surgery, even in France.
I was "forced" to adopt a more mediterranean diet in my late 20's/early 30's due to problems with my skin, although I also had to completely overhaul my skincare routine, which contributed a lot to those issues. So I'm all about the mediterranean diet, which makes it so easy to keep weight off. I also like what you say about hormone replacement therapy options--I've noticed in Slovenia where I live now (I grew up in the US), there are various small, Slovenian companies making natural supplements for menopause. This is something I never noticed in the US, where menopause seems to be almost completely ignored.

They called that beautiful lady fat? It’s so hard for women to be in the public eye, we get judged by such impossible standards! Thank goodness, I don’t have to be, my healthy 125 lb. figure would be considered obese, then. It must take a lot of courage for women to take on public roles, it’s hard enough being a private person and female. I’ve been criticized for having “deep-set eyes”, for example, but what, exactly, am I supposed to do about it? Even if we keep ourselves in perfect condition and turn ourselves out perfectly every day, everyone has less-than-perfect features. Men just aren’t judged for their appearance like that.
Great video, especially since you’re so young! It’s great to be prepared! I’m from California, and I always find it funny about the large American portions. I’ve only seen a large plate of food once, when I went to a particular chain restaurant, in Los Angeles. Otherwise, I get larger portions in Europe, especially Denmark. I don’t go to chain restaurants, so maybe that’s the reason. Maybe a “traditional” Chinese restaurant has a large entree, but it’s understood, entrees aren’t a single serving, so you have leftovers to have for another meal. 🤷🏽♀️ Supplements are popular in California. It’s probably related to the integration of Asian cultures, Native American, as well as European. HRT is unevenly accessible, unfortunately. I started taking it this year. It’s helping with joint discomfort, and has improved my sleep. During the day, I was already taking a supplement, Rhodiola Magnolia. It’s at most herbal stores and Whole Foods. For me, it’s great for focus, energy, and anxious people say it helps for that as well. There’s so many things to try, but do your research. Unfortunately, doctors in America seem to only know about turmeric, and turmeric is very good as well.
Alice thank you for this wonderful video. It’s such a great information. Big difference between France and America. I’m 56 and I wouldn’t take hormone therapy here. So I’m going through it naturally not easy though 🤣 all is sugar starch and poisonous ingredients, it’s very sad it’s here like this. Of course I gain so much weight trying to lose. Very difficult. I love your video so thank you!! ❤
I’m 60 and still a size 6, the small portions and small plates are a thing! I used to be addicted to sugar and broke up with it years ago, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have treats now and then. I used to put one small cookie in a ramekin and got teased about it,but hey, it worked. 😂The biggest thing was to make healthy mostly vegetable choices everyday and if you fall down one day start again tomorrow! After watching this though, I do need to make an effort to up my protein! Wish I was confident even with French to go to a French pharmacy!
In my 20s I forced myself not to eat sweets and eat healthy, it was hard due to young life style. In my 30s I was confident in what I eat and how I work out, my body doesn’t need processed sugar anymore and genuinely enjoys vegetables as a main meal, turning 40 soon, adjusting my trainings to get ready to 50s 😊
Hi Alice, first I want yo tell you how much I love your videos. I wish I lived in France! 🥰 I'm from the states (New York) and what you say is true. The portion sizes here are crazy. No one needs to eat that much food for one meal. Also, we do have the option to choose natural hormones but it is much more expensive. I think many people here, at least in NY are realizing the benefits of a Mediterranean diet and are trying to follow it. Unfortunately, organic food is also much more expensive here. It's a shame.
We have bioidentical hormones in the US that are made by plants The problem with the US food is that too many people are eating processed foods and foods with all sorts of chemicals that are banned in Europe. That's why there is so much obesity here. Not because no one exercises or we just eat all the time. I would move to Western Europe if I could for the food and healthcare
Eating all the time is what shocks me when I travel the states for my work. In the south and the mid/west. The north east and PNW was less shocking, but the rest of the country left me astonished. I saw very little exercise and no walking because the whole place is so car and freeway oriented. Europe is like another planet compared to the vast flyover regions of the US. And the portion sizes. Single Slices the size of a family pizza, with a large pack of cheese per ‘serve’. Trying to find fresh salad and vegetables to buy was really hard - all pre-cut and packaged. All the salads pre dressed with sugary dressings. France is like a total heaven after than. (It is a heaven all the time.)
@@Kate-lk6tw the chemicals they use in foods here makes people crave more food. I don’t think you can really knock us just because of the layout of towns versus cities …one you need a car, the other you can take public transportation or walk….you couldn’t find a produce section? There’s fresh produce in every major grocery store, not prepackaged. You can get just plain oil and vinegar for dressing. It’s one thing for someone to complain about their own country. You know what people don’t like? Listening to people from other countries complain about it. Should I complain about France?
@@saffanna725 And some of it isn't quite true, which I discussed in the post. Also, it's like arguing with your sibling and calling them a name. If someone else calls them a name it's not ok because they're your sibling. I don't go off on other countries inadequacies. Don't go off on mine.
@@HLB512 Why not? It's a comment section -- it doesn't have to be all positive and not all comments are going to be to your liking. Inadequacies of different countries are interesting to discuss. We're not all perfect.

The other thing I will say is In America MANY people use NATURAL supplements AND remedies. The natural supplement industry is a 70 BILLION dollar industry in America.
Yes, but they also eat massive portion sizes, drink huge amounts of sugary soda, and consume more processed foods than any other nation on earth. They buy commercial supplements, not directly from nature as intended. If it was made in a factory or a lab, stay away from it.
All sensible advice for any age frankly. But what is the obsession about 'things French people don't want you to know'? I doubt they care who knows or not!
I find them the most generous and helpful on the planet. I learn so much from Parisienne women, even just watching them. If you seek advice, they are brilliant. Changed my life.
While I agree with MOST of this l, CUTTING out RED meat is a MISTAKE. Yes, IT is IMPORTANT to be BALANCED, but Red MEAT is EXTRAORDINARILY healthy FOR you, ESPECIALLY as you AGE!
Cutting out red meat has improved my life in every possible way, and the scholars of Yale, Harvard, Oxford and Cambridge all conclude that everything is better without meat - planet earth has a future, we have better digestion and cardiovascular health, lower cholesterol and we do not permit dreadful cruelty and exploitation of animals in our name. If we were meant to eat red meat, we would not need stoves and steak knives. When people act about consumption of red meat like they are proselytising a religion, you know there is something wrong.

All contribute to good metabolic health when consumed as required by the body not by desires. Please be careful about blanket misleading statements with no scientific basis.
France has one of the highest rates of breast cancer in the world, higher than the United States. Yes, it’s true that the correlation between using HRT and developing breast cancer was overstated for many years, but there’s still an elevated risk of developing breast cancer when using HRT. Alice, I love your videos but please be careful when discussing this important topic
@trancos7641 I hope it's different. I'm using it now. Doc advised me to still go for mammogram every year because there's still a slight risk (7 in 10,000).
Agree! Seems @aliceinparis enjoys putting down the States. She spent time in the US and suddenly became the expert in all things American. The constant criticisms are not very becoming, but that’s okay, there’s room for improvement. Wow. We look at data, not individuals. France has the lowest obesity in the first world. America by far the worst, with the UK running to catch you. That you are not overweight is utterly irrelevant. To travellers to the US, the state of food and weight health is just astonishing. I could not find fresh food to buy travelling the South/West. I am a highly educated, nutritionally informed person, and it was a constant battle. Even Chicago, a great vibrant city, it was really hard (I was on the road for 18months). In the flyover, there is a MASSIVE problem, literally as well as in terms of health and wellbeing. It is not a personal criticism of you, but of the national priorities and systems. There are fat people in France, Italy and other countries! Just look...fat people in USA too! Look outside of Paris and other major cities? I agree that what we have available in USA is not pure! There is no such thing as a Mediterranean diet. There are over 20 countries around the Mediterranean Sea, and all of them have a different culinary tradition. I know some of those countries very well. I would not call the diet “healthy”. Though people stay healthy, but there are many other factors. I am not sure if eating pizza at least twice a week is that healthy, pastry, cakes etc. And ….some French ladies over 50 I knew in France were slim, most NOT ! During my holidays in St Tropez..yes I saw some Parisian women, some well over 50, horribly thin, 🤮.
You really should not lump all the States together as one. Where I live, there is little difference between French lifestyle and ours. Personally I breezed through it without any issues or hormone therapy, but I was healthy and still am. Long and irregular periods were annoying the last year. Than nothing, starting on my birthday.

What a great video. Here in Italy we do the same. Also keep in mind that SUGAR is the #1 ENEMY. You really have to watch! 🍰
You’re sooooo right, I know it yet the addiction is so strong. I just have to do it!!
In France people walk allot more. They don’t eat as much fast foods and eat less processed foods
In Europe,in general we walk at least 30 min daily.i hv been to Mac Do may be 3 times n my life n maiy 2 buy coffee
Glad to hear it
"Chicken ir even..." what you mean ariund 4:00. Greetings😉
@@joanofarcxxi Although I spoke of weight and my "love handles," I really have changed my diet and exercise for health reasons. Prediebetes, mainly, but other issues as well. I am happy to say my labs are much much better and the weight loss is a nice side effect.

It's so true. Life is hard in America. I'm Asian and have some American friends. I hope you can still try to make the best out of whatever you have ❤
I❤ all these tips even if you are not 50 yet, it never hurts to incorporate healthy living habits to prepare for when that time comes 😊 thank you Alice❣️
Except meat, I am a vegetarian, I follow most of your tipps😊
Greetings from Germany
Canadian-Greek here, and agree with all this! Thanks for the extra info on supplements ❤
Replace the grains with red meat and I agree with you
****HRT is no longer made from horse urine, which it was in the past.
This is very helpful. I've always wondered how woman like Carla and Juliette maintain their figures after 50. Thank you for sharing.

Age is just a number-what truly matters is living healthy for a lifetime
Hi Alice, love your videos, very informative and inspirational!! Thank you! Elena.❤️🙏🏻🌹
I'm so glad I found you!! I just watched 2 videos and found them very informative!!!! Im Latina from the USA and a new subscriber!
Thank you❤. Would you make more of these french lifestyle videos, please? Also bauty videos would be interesting 🙏🕊️💫🦋💞.

I'm a French woman going through the menopause, I work with many other French women going through the menopause, and we don't feel sexy.
Exactly this video is full of shit
That's the truth. Maybe HRT will help? Losing hormones can really impact our quality of life.
Love your channel ❤ You have so many good advice 👌🏼 French food and lifestyle is the best 🥰
thank you
Hi Alice, first I want yo tell you how much I love your videos.
Yes the food portions are insane! I asked the waiter once and he said that Americans like to feel they're getting their money's worth!
No snacking is number 1 French woman tip. I grew up in France and literally snacking is only for children.
We have bioidentical hormones in the US that are made by plants
The problem with the US food is that too many people are eating processed foods and foods with all sorts of chemicals that are banned in Europe.

I agree with you. Red meat is a whole food. It's one of the best you can eat.

Fat does not transform into sugar. Fat is fat, sugar is sugar, for one to molecularly transform into another is impossible. The body uses each energy source differently and for different needs. Fat for hormone balance and yes sometimes fuel, carbohydrates, glucose (not necessary from processed sugar cane as I think you are referring to) for energy. All contribute to good metabolic health when consumed as required by the body not by desires. Please be careful about blanket misleading statements with no scientific basis.

Agree! Seems @aliceinparis enjoys putting down the States. She spent time in the US and suddenly became the expert in all things American. The constant criticisms are not very becoming, but that’s okay, there’s room for improvement. I didn’t realize how perfect the French, and frankly, other countries are until I started watching this channel. I’ll be in Paris in October and will be requesting food containing no butter, milk, sugar, salt, beef or seafood. All that while not insulting the chef! And my last meal of the day is at 6pm. Ugh!
Education and availability are hugely important to food health. Europe makes that easy, the US makes it nearly impossible. That you are so dismissive and defensiveness is entirely consistent with your nation’s stats.
@@lolligreen2423I have recently returned from 18mths travelling the US. I wholly concur with her statements: I witnessed it everywhere. But the stats and demographic data tell the same story. Denial is not your friend. It is an inconvenient but wholly verified truth.
@@Kate-lk6tw If you think Chicago is a vibrant city , you are not well educated. If you traveled from south to west without finding fresh food, I am not sure what I can say to you. I am also well educated. I agree the USA makes it more difficult to access non GMO healthy choices. If you know anything about studies and 'stats' then you also know that who funds the studies and stats are who pays for them. This is not rocket science. Perhaps you need to look around for yourself? There are fat people in France, Italy and other countries! Just look...fat people in USA too! Look outside of Paris and other major cities? I agree that what we have available in USA is not pure! Call me dismissive and defensive if you wish. I don't consider myself as overeducated and arrogant either. By the way, Chicago a cesspool. One of the most dangerous cities and not in harmony with humanities best interests. Just saying ... Is this mindset in harmony with what you are told on mainstream media? Critical thinking may help.
@@Kate-lk6twBeing on the road for 18 months in USA and not finding healthy fresh food really concerns me. GMO food? I totally understand. So yes, it takes work to find more pure food. keto diet - limit carbohydrates to 50 grams par jour
Faut pas se comparer n'abusez pas c'est Carla bruni super top model elle est et restera sublissime ❤️❤️❤️
You really should not lump all the States together as one. Where I live, there is little difference between French lifestyle and ours. Personally I breezed through it without any issues or hormone therapy, but I was healthy and still am. Long and irregular periods were annoying the last year. Than nothing, starting on my birthday.

Hello Abby Did ever say in this video that American women over 50 are overweight? Did I ever mention American women in this video? After replaying this video, the answer is NO.

Why? It’s directly relevant to the question. And many many comments here thanking Alice. Stop being so fragile, the evidence supports the conclusion.
