MSR WHISPERLITE UNIVERSAL HOW LONG WILL IT BURN?? | MSR whisperlite burn testing with white gas.

  • Testing the MSR whisperlite burn time with 11oz of Coleman fuel. I was kind of surprised by the results. Kerosene has more energy per oz then white gas (Coleman fuel) and will burn longer. I may test that in the future. I think liquid fuel stoves are still a good option for backpacking, especially if you split the stove between two or three people.
I really started backwards with backpacking stoves. Starting with alcohol stoves, I ended up getting tired of slow boil times, and trying to find a flat place to set them up. I just wanted something to boil water fast in any weather. I eventually bought a MSR whisperlite universal.
The MSR whisperlite universal Will boil a liter of water in about four minutes. Doing the math that equals less than 1/2oz of fuel per two cups of water boiled. Over the long run, especially in cooler weather, a liquid fuel stove can easily make up the weight difference vs an alcohol stove. Again, splitting the stove and fuel weight up between 2 or more people and the weight savings is even greater.
Don't discount white gas stoves for summer use either. The MSR whisperlite boils water so fast, it will boil water for three people, in the same time an alcohol stove will boil water for one.

Thanks for the test. WOW! Over an hour with the 11oz. I have the 20oz. so that will definitely be plenty of fuel for my needs.

Very nice video. I burnt Kerosene K2 on MSR Dragonfly stove, 1000 ml Kerosene burnt for 330 Minutes (5.5 HOURS).

Good trial. There are variables to how long a stove can last with a given amount of fuel: Pot diameter, Wind, Ambient Temperature, and Altitude. In my particular location (120 ft. above sea, av. temp 80F) with no wind to light breeze, I found an average (a variety of stoves used) of 14g or either liquid white gas or canister gas will boil 1L in the same 6-inch wide alu pot. I take this as the base value, and adjust accordingly. I would estimate 11oz. of white gas to boil about 20 separate boils of 1L of water in a quiet location, counting the fuel used for priming into the usage. The pot diameter and wind seem to be the major factors in fuel efficiency.
On a separate note, the old type Whisperlite Internationale is strictly a white gas stove. With Kerosene it is erratic, especially if the temp is low. I had it sprout in a burst of orange flame in the garage, in summer! It was going strong, so I just turned away and attended to something else for 2 minutes, and it happened. When I turned to look, kerosene leaked all over the table, and it was a little puddle of fire. I have no experience with the new Whisperlite.

Great video, I have ordered the Whisperlite International with a 20 oz fuel bottle using Coleman fuel White Gas. The reason for the larger bottle is that if on the mountain I am stuck for some reason in Winter snow conditions........ I have plenty of gas to boil water to keep me going until I can get off the mountain.

Thanks for the info. I'm taking my family of 5 to Pictured Rocks and wanted to make sure we didn't run out of fuel.

Good stuff man, i have two screw down type stoves, they can be used with a coleman fuel bottle that you can find in the camping section at Wmart. These fuel bottle are like 7 oz, i can boil water around 20 times on that amount of fuel. Keep in mind these are not the greenies, this is a fuel bottle thats around 3 in wide and maybe 2 in tall. Lots of affordable items in this area and some are very compact. Im out!!

Nice video. Ya saved me an hour. Just bought one for an elk trip. Should be enough for two nights in the woods.

    Question
Can you adjust the flame from high to low? Thanks

on the whisperlite its very hard to simmer. you must deflate the bottle and only have 1-3 pumps worth of air inside. the valve must be opened just 1/100 of a milimeter.

@@Francois_Dupont - so is that the same as one micrometer? Must have to be really precise to hit that spot...
