Everything is surreal, like in a dream, or a fairy-tale. Pina Bausch's "Orpheus and Eurydice" is a total enjoyment and a living example of aesthetics. Brilliant dancers from the Ballet de L'Opéra National de Paris toss around in graceful, fluid movements, in a dreamlike setting to a beautiful piece of music, which altogether underpin her breathtaking choreography.
When I was watching a production by the Portland Opera and listening to this exquisite music, it occurred to me that Orfeo was incredibly selfish to want Eurydice back on Earth given where she was in the Afterlife. Wouldn't anyone want to be among the Blessed Spirits if given the opportunity?
Exquisite. An example of the what we human beings can produce if, once inspired, work and cooperate together to create moments of sublime Beauty. What God in Christ intended us to reflect of His tremendous Glory. Thankful for the dancers, musicians, Gluck, Pina Bausch, the patrons, the costumers, the set designers, the lighting crew, the AV techs, the ordinary workers who sweep the floors...
This piece, The Dance of the Blessed Spirits, is always, whenever I come back to view it once again, so satisfying yet moving -- within a deep spiritual dimension. If I recall correctly, Pina Bausch studied in New York City at the Martha Graham school on East 63 St. It was in the late '50's. At that time, I was working in the Registrar's Office, helping out Geordie Graham, Martha's younger sister. I remember Ms. Bausch's name among the list of students from that time: Pina being an unusual name, even in old New York City. As I view this piece I think it is ironic, that a choreographer as gifted as Ms. Bausch who has choreographically put her finger on the truth of the mythic Orfeo, whereas the great Graham, in what ought to have been her most insightful in her old age was, instead, fooling around with the likes of Maple Leaf Rag. It was not for nothing that the Greeks formed an entire mystery school around the Orphic Mysteries, the men's religion. Martha ought to have been working on exploring the mysteries of Orfeo. But she went in the wrong direction. Don't get me wrong, Scott Joplin's ragtime is heavenly. And Maple Leaf Rag is one his great achievements. But Gluck is better. And Pina Bausch is better.
Very beautiful moves which match the music's drive to evoke a mood of some deeply emotional yet blissful spiritual state. A state beyond words. I do wish however, that Ms. Bausch had been moved to use the men more. Here they are employed as mere porter's to transport the women from place to place. But come on! Men also have their own deeply felt expressions of purity of soul; Men also are blessed and are capable of bestowing blessing. Ms. Bausch seems to say "I don't know about that. I only know about how women feel." But that's a cop out. After all, Gluck was a man -- and his music evokes a mystical sense of angelic prayer -- for lack of a better word -- though it does stay down in the underworld. As an artist, Bausch needs to dig deeper. And find the sense of male/female relationship which speaks of the transcendent wholeness that is missing here..
Bill D, Indeed I get very angry when men are only used to support the ballerina and stay behind. Men have beautiful physical conditions women do not have, better and more ellaboret jumps and more turns, etc.
I saw the whole ballet yesterday evening on Arte, oh so beautiful and well done with the singers too, I realy enjoyed it, so much thanks for this, Yvana *-*
Meu pai por nome Veridiano, operario da construcao civil, so' tinha o ensino fundamental, de alma docissima, tocava violoncelo por partitura, me fespertou em mim o gosto pela musica erudita e diante de tanta beleza comovo-me as lagrimas; sublime Danca dos Espititos Abencoados
Interesting (to me) mostly because it seems so 'un-Bauschian.' I mean, where are the carnivorous animals on stage? Where's all the mud? [She must have been in a romantic mood at that time.] Very enjoyable. Thanks for posting.
Mabe Yushin Most Ballerinas have mangled toes from the wood at the toe of the shoe, on the bright side, they are in such good Physical shape, that when they have babies they literally slide out.
I this a joke! You need to take a course in Dance history if you're questioning Pina Bausch's genious. Please say you don't understand the work, NOT say she was not a genius. She is the MOTHER of Tanztheater..... Looking at her work from a "classical" eye will do you a GREAT disservice.. Not all dance is BALLET and BALLET based......LOL and even THAT is foolish to say about her!!!! her work is deeply rooted in Martha/Cunningham/Ballet/Laban/Wigman/Joss.....!!!
Please people take a course in dance history before writing idiotic things. Then again! what would anyone expect from someone writing PERVERT whilst writing a critique..... AND PINA DOES NOT NEED TO BE REDEEMED! READ ANY DANCE HISTORY BOOK AND SEE THE ENDLESS DERIVATIVE CHOREOGRAPHERS WHO CREDIT HER AS INFLUENCE.....STOP WATCHING SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE AND SWAN LAKE FOR A BIT.....
This is why I dedicate my life to art. Amazing.
I'm not a big dance fan, and I never heard of Pina Bausch, but I can't get enough of this Dance of the Blessed Spirits.

Indeed, Pina Bausch's choreography at l 'opéra de Paris' in 2018 was unforgettable !
It astonishes me that Pina Bausch has created such a beautiful piece of dance. It's delightful.
Wohl eines der schönsten und tiefgehendsten Musikstücke,
immer ein absoluter und sehr ergreifender Hörgenuss!
Thank you so much! I want to watch this until the very end of my life
Saw the opera at the Met and what an experience. I had tears when the baton was lifted. Such divine music.
this is gorgeous. Pina has captured an 'other' world of spirits, gossamer-light...
This is one of the most beautiful things I'll ever see/hear in my lifetime on a computer.
Simba92 I agree with you 100%.
Isn't it, tho.

Ain’t love a selfish need?
@@edderek1948 >Love that is a selfish need isn't love -- at least not in the truest sense of the term.
She was happy to return with him, so no, not selfish.
I think that Orpheo and Venus would have made a better couple based on their similar personalities❤

Magnifique !
I went to see this at the Paris Opera House in May 2014. Sheer perfection.

I thought this looked as having a Martha Graham influence! I (and others) would love to hear about the going ons at the Graham school!
The piece looks very "grahamian". And as it can be expected in the Garnier, the dancers are optimal.
I am most grateful to Mr. Gustavo Lanfranchi for having up loaded this marvelous video.
The beautiful power of music & dance. Thanks & best wishes.

I think the women alone would have made it more saintly. They are all wonderful so graceful!
❤
I agree with Rivkah
pretty good
it is from her earlier pure dance works it seems
SILLY!
Lindo demais!!!!!!
。。i can see...thanks a lot
Can it be more soufull? Fairies live not only in underground but also in bright glade or in Eden. And is it necessary to be dimmed?
Interesting (to me) mostly because it seems so 'un-Bauschian.' I mean, where are the carnivorous animals on stage? Where's all the mud? [She must have been in a romantic mood at that time.] Very enjoyable. Thanks for posting.
