Interesting review. I would agree that the plot was predictable (they would hit a low point due to alcoholism and one of the friends would certainly die or get injured because of their drunkenness).
However, I think the film scored with the way it mines the premise for thrill. The way these 4 teachers sneak in alcohol in school and could get caught any day was great to watch. MM is in full throttle as an actor and brings real pathos in key scenes, especially the one where he pleads his wife to stay. The visual device of showing the alcohol levels increasing as they drink, was good. Add the good direction, editing and soundtrack to mix and it makes for a solid watch.
I suspect that Vinterberg had a more sad ending in mind but her daughter's passing maybe motivated him to end the film on a note that emphasizes on the importance of living life to its fullest. It's cliche yes, but I saw where he was coming from. It seemed personal and made me emotional. Plus MM danced the heck out of the final sequence.
However, does it deserve the best intl picture award? That remains debatable and for good reason.

You make some excellent points. I suspect the same of the ending but I did enjoy MM dancing nonetheless. Really, I enjoyed every scene where there wasn't drinking, such as the discussion with his wife. It's certainly not a bad film but compared to the other nominees, I didn't feel like it had a lot new to say.

I'm pretty sure, that when Guillermo del Toro says, it's one of the best films he has ever seen, and you say the opposite, it's you who missed something in the movie.
But hey, we all have our differences, and can change our minds at some point. So maybe watch it again, in a couple of years.

Hi akyhne, you're right, perhaps I will come back to this film in the future and it will mean something more to me.
However, I stand by what I said in my review BUT it is completely my subjective opinion, which stems from a dislike of watching films where middle-aged men deal with alcoholism. I can't personally relate and this film didn't help me empathise - again, me, personally. I also feel that it's an overdone topic though I appreciate that it may be very moving for others, like it clearly is for Guillermo del Toro.

Is finding joy in life through drinking a message worth spreading?? I thought at the end the film would get beyond that but it didnt!! Mikelsen dance could be a very nice symbol but he kept drinking till the end... Is the director really sugesting that alcohol can make life much better?? Oh i felt really weird with thia film

I get it, you do not like countries that have little to no population diversity and especially almost only have white people like a Scandinavian country. You should know that the young students we see in this film were not cast, but are the actual students from the class of the directors daughter Ida who died on the 4th day of shooting the film. So your wish to replace them for a more diverse cast is just plain heartless and despicable in my opinion. But then I understand that you speak out of personal bias and ignorance.
Go watch the latest Mads Mikkelsen movie Riders of Justice. Since you seem to know little to nothing about Scandinavia, then just so that you know in advance. Riders of Justice is also full of white people (because this is how it actually is in reality), but it's nothing like the typical Hollywood revenge action movie, but at times a highly violent ("Viking") Danish dark comedy-drama, with some in depth layers of personal soul searching.
Some describe it as being all over the place, but actually it's really relying on the 'butterfly effect' with future events depending on one tiny event after the other. So you will get the whole package, so to speak.

Hi AGF fans, in retrospect I should have made my point clearer. My issue with the film is not that it is an all-white cast nor do I, as you put it, "not like countries that have little to no population diversity". I appreciate that the majority of places worldwide are made up of one specific ethnicity as the majority and there is nothing wrong with a film showing an accurate depiction of its culture.
My point was based on the wider context. As I mentioned in my reply to another comment, it is not simply that these are four white people, it is that they are four middle-aged white men with stable jobs and comfortable lives, a group I have seen a lot of films about. I criticise this in relation to it winning International Best Picture and question whether it was the best choice out of the nominees. Apologies if this came off the wrong way.
Judging by the trailer of Riders of Justice, it looks like a far more unique story and certainly one I'd be interested in watching.

@@TeaBreakFilmReviews ... I think the key point here was, besides celebrating life in general, actually to make a movie about what it feels like to be 4 middle-aged white men in crisis, and even to some extend make their problems with alcohol kind of rub off on their students. The kind of provocative real life movie, about actual genuine real life issues and problems that could only be made in Denmark in this day and age, because it will challenge your inner taboos and political correctness in a very "H. C. Andersen "Emperor's new clothes" kind of way, by poking fingers and and making fun at factual real life issues that people in this day and age do not want to address.

These people are incapable of empathising on a human level unless the characters match their traits exactly

You seem very focussed on "a message". This is imo. not a movie about affirming cliches. It's a tribute to feeling alife. "Reckless and childish", God. You are so comfortable with how you are, because you find it easy. Good for you. The Hunt, also by Vinterberg? Was that okay? I feel like you review with politics in mind, this is not an essay, it's an artistic representation.

try to catch Jallikattu.. an indian movie.. in a language called Malayalam.. which explores the notion of masculinity and the toxicity often associated with it. It also taps into the tribal nature inherent in the man and society created by him. All this messaging is pretty much on the nose.. but the filmmaking is stellar and so is acting.. it was India's entry but couldn't qualify. would love to know ur take on it.

This might be the worst review i've seen in a while. The reasons you give for not liking this movie are shallow and it seems to me you are completely blinded by the fact it is about 4 white men. To say it is a missed opportunity to give this movie a oscar cause it's from a country with a large movie industry and it's made by a well known director is so strange to me. An oscar should be won by the best movie in their category, not by the movie that needs it the most. Maybe find an other hobby with opinions like these.
