I have a 71" VW beetle project car that I kept with from California, I relocated to Illinois. I plan to have ready and running before summer starts.

@@tuned_tunas just a tip from when i did mine.. Make sure its centered and get a million clips to hold the headliner. You may need one more bow for the liner and if i had to do it again, i would start with the front and back windows and stretch it..then start with the 2 doors and the work around the side windows. This job will test your patience and make you woo-saaa lol

Hey. I have a 65 bug with a metal dash. I bought a 68 bug this weekend. It has a metal dash too. I did some research and found out it is supposed to have that plastic cover, which I hate (like how the gave it the finger!) So I guess the prior owner removed it like you did. Yours looked sweet; great job. I'm definitely not going to a stock cover! Btw, great philosophy about being positive!
Yeah 100% agree with you man. The plastic dash is a huge no for me too. A lot more cleaner without it. Not only that but I’m working on swapping over some early 60s gauges & glove box. Be in the lookout for that !! I appreciate your support🙏🏽🤝

German models had metal dash up until 1971 and I believe 67 was the last year with metal dash on US models . Mine (69 model) has metal dash with chrome trims. . Love the car!

Nice Bro Looks heaps better without the Plastic Dash , Mine came from the Factory without it I think thats how them Models were made for the Australian market ive seen the same year model as mine Over there and there got that Plastic crap on them , looks Nice well done
Very interesting information. Might be for the crash import laws they got in the states. That might be why they had to add them here. But personally it doesn’t belong on the car. Glad we took care of that though

I drove my 1200 at about 86mph max, for like 11 years it worked and with litte problems.
But the engine went to heaven this year , now got a new 1600 dual carbs engine build into it.
Its actually quite fast ,I only need a better gearbox for lower rpms on higher speeds.
Hopefully your experience at such high MPH wasn't so scary. That built motor thing sound legit though.
I have a '69 Bug I've been restoring. I like how you changed to low-back seats. "72 was the first year for the ugly steering wheel that they kept til the end. How did you adapt that older steering wheel? Jbugs says it isn't possible. Did you change the whole steering column? That steering wheel is one of the reasons I looked for an older than '72 Bug.
Ima be honest with you bro. I bought the steering wheel from pick and pull and just swapped it over. No modification needed. And it flows better with the steering column as well.

I used a plastic pot. Like the ones for the plants I just cut it out with a razor blade.
I’m doing a 71 convertible now…but what about holes in the dash??? I think I’ve decided to use a “cleanup” dash overlay…I’ve tied tig welding patches…but just not clean looking…did you ultimately fill the holes…or just kind if live with it?
Surprisingly enough I found uses for all the holes and covered the vents to clean up the look. Finding uses for the holes was the hard part. But it came together quite nicely.

You should totally work on it bro. It be a cool project for thr weekends. And I didn't use anything fancy bro just some autozone paint. Its a GM color match.
