Troubleshoot a Broken Treadmill That Won't Run

  • See how I troubleshot a treadmill that was not working. The repair attempt ultimately fails, but it may be helpful in showing what I learned. Check the circuit board and the motor to find what is not functioning.
    If you need a new treadmill - guess what, Amazon sells them:
    US: amzn.to/1OVivfp
    Canada: www.amazon.ca/s...
    UK: www.amazon.co.u...
    Remember - SAFETY IS IMPORTANT - don't mess around electricity if you don't know what you are doing. I'm not responsible for your actions.

    Rule of thump of circuit repairing: A burned connector is never a reason of the circuit's failure, its the result due to over current which was caused by some other failed component. Each connector introduces some resistance in the current path, so excessive current flow creates heat and sometime burns them.
    In this case, since the motor was good, that means something else in the controller failed and allowed the motor to draw excessive current which lead the connector to burn.
    So here you were supposed to remove the heat sink first, do a visual inspection to see if anything else is burned and failed alongside that connector. If nothing can be found from a visual inspection then if possible go into deeper investigation with proper tools like multi-meter or a scope.
    By the way, 8:15 is that a fried rectifier I am seeing there?

    • @ryanmccarthy2033
      @ryanmccarthy2033 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      U r definitely right but I just wanted to add that the original cause of the first component to make a chain reaction of other components to go is a worn belt, a worn deck, an illadjusted belt or a non lubricated deck. Because with too much friction and or load the computer tries to compensate by upping the voltage wich eventually fries a component over time. And it doesn't help that it's a cheaper treadmill

      @@ryanmccarthy2033 I would hope a well designed system has over current protection in this all to common mechanical failure items...there would be a fuse.

    thanks for this good DIY video,
    I think you repaired the consequence and you haven't track for cause,
    firstly you should get a multimeter and search the reason of the short circuit also i think that you have two dead capacitor that would be better to replace them.

      😂 I also love the "don't mess around with electricity unless you have some good experience and know what you're doing" and then @ 5:00 "not sure the right name, a device that holds charge"... A capacitor is a pretty basic component for anyone that has good experience with electricity. And then neglects discussing the discharging of capacitor process.

    I was critical in my mind at first but u did an alright job and it was cool to have the kids helping u. But the thing I was thinking the whole time was that u were just fixing the problem not the cause of the problem. Even when u get a new circuit board make sure u have a good belt and deck. And make sure u keep the deck lubed and belt adjusted cause besides really cheap components on the board, if u don't do any of the things I suggested that's what makes boards go

  • @Nocholas
    @Nocholas 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The reason this happens is because the running belt was not properly lubricated during regular intervals. Without the lubrication, the motor draws too much amperage and burns lower control board. It's extremely common yet easily avoidable. I have a service call at least once a week for something like this.

    • @cowlumbus

    it would be interesting to find with an oscilloscope how current, voltage, frequency have been affected by the faulty capacitor(s), or even find out if it's a faulty transistor.
    the ending was unexpected and unpredictable, personally it is brilliant to have left it in; I have been misdirected throughout believing it might have been a mere contact oxidation causing havoc; was this bad PWM or faulty capacitance/inductance?
    this was an opportunity to learn; this should not have been an opportunity to get harmed, but still brilliant, and hand off rollers while still in motion

    • @TomahawkDIY
      @TomahawkDIY  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The circuit board did light up again and make beeping sounds. I think a new board would repair it. I found the party by calling the dealer who directed me to a repair place. I think they quoted me about $175 for the new board. I decided that was more than I wanted to spend on an old treadmill.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tomahawk DIY In that case I would have possibly attempted repairing the board again. This time would require removal of the board from the metal heatsink. I would probably also opt to trace the circuit trace back to where it originates, where there's more "meat" on the circuit board to solder to.
      But, it also bears saying that if they designed to board like that to begin with, on a device with a decent current draw like the motor, it should have been designed better to begin with. If they skimped there, there are other places where they had probably cut corners, so replacing the machine was probably the best move.

      First Step :check the motor. To do that release the belt of the motor that connects it to the front roller. Then give power to the treadmill with an external DC source (power supply or battery, any DC voltage 12-24v will be ok) NOT THE AC POWER (the treadmill at this step stays unpluged). Then do an amps draw test to the motor. So now with the treadmill without load, the amps you want to see should be 800ma-1.5A about. If it's more than these readings, the motor has problem. When a motor turns -works it doesn't mean that is good. Usually that bad load burns out the lower board.So start with the motor check. If it's OK, then the board has the problem. Usually the worn belt or and a heavy user, no lubrication etc are the reasons that causing the problem. I hope that tip will help you

      I think he was in uncharted territory the whole time. Why make a diy video when you dont know wtf you're doing? Inexperienced at soldering, wrong quick connect (yellow is for larger wire, crimp cannot be trusted, should have soldered it as well) should have removed the hardware and inspected the bottom of the board and soldered correctly all over suspect joints. When there is significantly MORE smoke after you attempt repair, go back to decorating pastries.

    Looks like a really dirty, dusty garage. Not a good environment for a treadmill.
