Really like this frame of reading these shows from the perspective of erotica. I think the disconnect that Harem anime end up having at the end of the day though is that they are so paradoxically chaste. Lots of looking, lots of innuendo, but so rarely can it actually culminate in any sex being had. It has to be just bullshit flirting and cheesecake shots forever, which completes the objectification in many cases (sex is ultimately a two player game, voyeurism is not) Partly I assume that's because of the censor, but there's also something to be said for how likely virginal the audience of these shows probably is and how they probably can't project into a cipher main character who does have sex.
One thing I should mention is when Yumina asks Touya what he thinks about her swimsuit, she says: "I picked it out with you in mind." Which made me feel very uneasy considering Yumina is 12 years old!
The main problem for this show is its plot and focus even the most trashiest anime as them for example the anime Concepcion is the save a world from disaster by wowing and hooking up with the other girls to defeat said evil or tale of the wedding ring which is more or less the same plot the only true difference would be the muguffen. There are also personal goals as well such as luffy finding the one piece and becoming king of the pirates, deku wanting to become the next symbol of peace, naruto wanting to become hokage and be a knowledged, for touya I don’t see that I don’t see a goal nor ideal to strive for the only thing I can think of is adventuring is fun for him and that not wrong but how it’s portrayed is so lack luster one anime that does this right would be the wondering witch Elaine which is entertaining through out the story as something new is happening
I 100% agree. I connect more with characters who have a personality and goal we can get behind. Not white-coat Kirito one-shotting everything with little to no effort, and collecting women as prizes. In terms of Isekai in general, the worst realizations of this offensive trope are the subplots about romanticized slavery, and how enslaved women actually like being the hero's slave. Seriously! no woman would willingly become someone's slave! And even if said Isekai tries to justify slavery by saying the MC treats their slaves with kindness, that doesn't change the fact that you're basically turning a person into a pet! It's disgusting!
Well, I think you’ve hit the nail on the head by comparing _Smartphone_, and harem schlock in general, to erotica… minus the eroticism, of course. Not that it’s actual fap material - it’s too childish to engage with sexuality or sexual content beyond gawking at the female form - just that the purpose it serves is not strictly narrative. And those other purposes interfere with - rather than coincide with or reinforce - the narrative, because it’s poorly written on every level beyond the expression of a primal desire for a harem of “cute”, scantily clad, subservient anime girls and the primal desire to live life on easy mode (distinct from the desire to be powerful, as that would require actual character agency). Like for “problematic” erotica, if you’re already invested in the particular fantasy, you’re willing to do the mental gymnastics necessary to be comfortable with it. There’s nothing inherently wrong with that, but when the erotica starts resembling a narrative work, there’s a lot more load the gymnast has to bear, and that’s dangerous. Narratives are just so much more salient, and combining a very desirable fantasy with a lackluster or incoherent narrative is a recipe for cognitive dissonance and, therefore, self-delusion. One thing that always bugged me about this episode, is when the girls ask Touya which swimsuit he likes best, Touya resorts to a scapegoat by picking the two 12 year olds, because he doesn't want to hurt the girls' feelings. Something I've seen a million times before in other anime with beach episodes. Plus the girls are written as sex objects rather than real people. Yumina for example basically boils down to "I'm gonna drop my entire life and marry the MC."(all because he did one nice thing)
whats crazier than how much this show sucks is that i managed to find one anime worse than it record of ragnarok. if you havent seen it good please dont watch it.
I had no plans to watch M.O.R.B.O.E. I would much rather spend my time watching watching a Ghibli movie. Also, I hate it when people claim Smartphone Isekai is a "great story", when there are much better anime they could be watching.

I'm going to be honest with you. You aren't ready for the Giant Mechas that come up later in the story. The whole story tries to insert some "conflict" by making the guy go around the world with the Hydra solving people's problems and finding this sky castle pieces (that come with complimentary robo-waifus) So he can find a thousands-of-years-old-in-the-body-of-a-robo-child scientist to build them because the glass monsters are invading with glass kaijus. The worse part is that the Mechas get some honest to God good designs. Like, I want them to have their own anime because the concept artist REALLY broke his hand drawing them.
Yet another great video man can't wait for episode 11.
