Spandau Ballet are one of Britain’s great iconic bands having sold over 25 million records, scored numerous multi-platinum albums and amassed 23 hit singles across the globe since their humble beginnings as a group of friends with dreams of stardom in the late 1970s. It wasn’t long before they became fully-fledged members of the iconic Blitz Club scene and established themselves as one of the super-groups of the 80s.
The band's classic line-up features brothers Gary and Martin Kemp on guitars, vocalist Tony Hadley, saxophonist Steve Norman and drummer John Keeble.

I've only been waiting six years for this to be posted. Christ alive Tony is so damned handsome, and truly the greatest male vocalist of the last forty years along with Freddy Mercury. Steve looks so cool too. Spandau Ballet is Nothing without Tony and Tony is everything all on his own, a true gentleman, star performer, yet humble, down-to-earth and really caring and nice to his fans.

This wasn't a live performance. Artists would often lip sync or perform/sing over a backing track on Top Of The Pops.

I know that artists did that but often they’d record a live version earlier in the day and then lip sync to it on top of the pops, that’s why this version sounds different to the single version.
@@judex3226 to my ear it sounds like Tony Hadley is singing live whilst the rest of the band mime over an already available instrumental version. Although quite plausible I wouldn't think they'd re-record the tune just for a 3.5 minute slot on a TV show, I'd think it would be more likely for them to spend time rehearsing their performance for the cameras.

I worked on TOTP in the 80s
The vocalist would sometimes sing live while the band mimed to a prerecorded performance. This would give a more realistic appearance of the entire band playing live. Artists didn’t need to rehearse a performance much unless it included a dance routine which didn’t happen very often back then.

Never one of my favorites, but I enjoy it when I'm in the mood. The preposterous lyrics actually help me not to take it too seriously. Spand are so comfortable up there, they leave a lot of bands to shame - they're going to enjoy their moment! Steve Norman's not a man; he's a god.

@@delinellychan With Simon le Bon as backing vocal. Best version there is of this song 👌🏼. Indeed, Tony solo does covers. Spandau did one cover; The Boxer, which was recorded in ‘89 but released only on their 40th anniversary album.
