Took me decades to really understand what I've deduced are the 2 main takeaways from this classic: "Hold onto 16 as long as you can. Changes come around real soon, make us women and men." And, of course, "Life goes on long after the thrill of living is gone." God bless 1982!
What a fantastic decade to have been a teenager, I enjoyed it so much. Such happy memories we were so carefree. Would love to go back for a visit I would so savor the moment. 😀😀

The BBC should have kept the Top Of The Pops logo and theme tune it used at this time. This could be one of the reasons why, in 1986 (when the format was changed), this show began its 20-year downward spiral until it was axed in 2006. But boy what a decade the eighties were to be growing up in.
1986 is when the music began to go downhill, so did the show with it. Kylie and all that crappo stuff in the charts. TV centre was on some prime land so guess what? they blamed low ratings but eastenders had those, did they axe it? then the beeb wanted to wash it's hands of totp and the site after the saville scandal and couldn't wait to be rid of it.
@@darren-q5n erm I'm tlaking about a different song haha. I'm talking about the first song. You telling me those two musicians sitting on the floor at 1:17 are from the Caribbean?! BTW I agree about Culture Club, it's also a great song, yeah totally reggae-based that one.
John Cougar Mellencamp’s song “Jack and Diane” is still as great as when it was released. I was 10 when this show aired. I loved the music then, and I still do 42 years later!

Yes odd that I don't know why though. He wasn't like dlt or Savile either. But as he is not here know I guess we will not know alas. Also to note he presented this one on his own whereas some other ones had two doing so too did they not too.

Acts almost never performed live on TOTP. They experimented with it at some point in the 80s/90s, but it wasn't a success. "Up the cuckoo tree"...typical BBC. Can't say "bloody".

after a few weeks, even Marvin Gaye's song would be called "Healing" only.
