    This song wasn't played on the radio because the censors thought it was too raunchy.

    A prime example of "Blue-Eyed Soul"
    When the RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS were in concert in your city - 9 months later there was a spike in births...

    They got booked sight unseen into a black club and when they finished their set someone shouted "That's Righteous Brothers" and the name stuck.

    • @Aurora-tp3dy
      @Aurora-tp3dy ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No, you are confusing them with Buddy Holly being invited to play at the Apollo Theater. They were playing at a club in Santa Ana, Orange County, CA. Black Marines from the El Toro Marine base heard some white guys were singing R & B and decided to check them out. It was the Marines who started calling them righteous brothers during the months they appeared at that club, while they were on stage and off. When they recorded Little Latin Lupe Lu, as a duo, they needed a name to put on the record. They couldn't use The Paramours since it was only the two of them. Bobby suggested they use the name the marines were calling them.

    The Righteous Brothers are not brothers. They are Bill Medley, the baritone (singing this song) and Bobby Hatfield, the tenor who sang "Unchained Melody". Early in their career they struggled with what to call themselves but somebody from the audience yelled, "that was righteous, brother" so they became the Righteous Brothers. My two favorite songs from them are "Soul And Inspiration" and "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling".
    You may have heard Bills voice in the theme song to "Dirty Dancing" called "The Time Of My Life" which he sang with Jennifer Warnes.

    Your hearing what they grew up on. Britt your correct. They grew up listening to Little Richard, Ray Charles, BB King. And yes, they were mistaken for being Black because they sang with so much soul in their voices! Their music was labeled, " Blue Eyed Soul and they were proud of that. Love those two! RIP Bobby Hatfield! And keep on singing Bill Medley!!

    These two heartthrobs from the sixties were not biological brothers but rather soul brothers. We were so fortunate they came together. Hence the term: blue eyed soul. Wait till you hear Bobby 'Ken Doll' do his solo Summertime. They each have solos's and numerous duo's that hit the charts: You'll never walk alone, Just once in my life; Soul and Inspiration; Justine and You've lost that loving feeling to name a few.

    Part of what made these two so great was their differences both physically and musically. Bill (tall and dark bass-baritone ) was a blues singer and Bobby (short and blond first tenor) liked doo wop. They both sang Rhythm and blues with all their heart and soul though and their catalogue includes everything from hard rock to ballads. In the mid sixties they were the hottest group out there … still performing in 2003 when Bobby passed. Bill has continued to sing to sell out venues at the age of 82.

      I heard the Etta James version & she sure could belt out those Jazz/Blues songs. I'm so glad that her Son had her sing & record those types of songs. Unfortunately, in the 50s & 60s, some singers were pigeonholed into a certain genre of music & were never really able to show everything they had & could do. Going from "At Last" to "Damn Your Eyes" ("Seven Year Itch" album) was a far stretch that Etta James did flawlessly. RIP- Dear Lady.

    Such a great (and appreciative) reaction to Bill (lower voice) and Bobby (higher voice) - and your Ray Charles reference was spot-on in my opinion!! They brought grit/soul/R&B to their music in so many different ways - Bobby joining Bill in this song is always a show-stopper for me - so "Righteous!!" And I completely agree with ClandOp: you are on the fast trip to 30,000 that I have seen, and deservedly so. Thank you for the very enjoyable reaction!!

    According to Bill Medley, [the tall one,] they adopted the name The Righteous Brothers for the duo because black Marines from the El Toro Marine base started calling them "righteous brothers". At the end of a performance, a black U.S. Marine in the audience would shout, "That was righteous, brothers!", and would greet them with "Hey righteous brothers, how you doin'?" on meeting them.

    Britt, you've got to dig up their earliest rockin' hits on the Moonglow label -- Koko Joe, My Babe, Little Latin Lupe Lu, Try To Find Another Man, B-Flat Blues. Great stuff that is hardly played at all these days. The reaction videos I've seen so far on You Tube on the Righteous Brothers always seem to be from their career on the Philles label, when they were given a lot of old, slow standards to re-do. The Philles songs were bigger hits for them than the Moonglow days, but the music is very different. Play those early rockers -- that's where they got the name "Righteous"!

    You need to do a review of “You lost that loving feeling “ next. These blue-eyed soul singers were heartthrobs in their day. The 50s and early 60s had a lot of Ken dolls. The Time/Life magazine people coined the term “Teen Idol” when they did a feature article on Ricky Nelson. I bet you’ll swoon wh n you see him perform “There will never be anyone else but you”. “Garden Party” was performed later and is a response to being booed off stage. He died in a plane crash shortly after that song went big.

    IF you love the Righteous Brothers' 'Blue-Eyed Soul', you should try another 60's artist, Timi Yuro. She once opened for Frank Sinatra and Elvis came to see her when she played Vegas. Try "Hurt", "What's A Matter, Baby", ""Make the World Go Away", or her cover of Patsy Cline's "She's Got You".

    It was not Ken doll singing. They were not brothers, just the band name. Back in the day everyone thought they were black until they started making appearances on tv. Brilliant.

    Willie Dixon wrote this song in 1954, Muddy Waters was the first to record it, Foghat realized a version in 1972
