Fogerty never had been to the south, Louisiana or the bayou when he wrote this song. This is his view of what the bayou would look and feel like…. He nailed it!!! People are shocked to hear he was from Cali and never went to the Deep South. At one point CCR was right in the Beatles heels! My dad raised me on these guys and we still ride around and listen to them. One of the greatest rock bands of all time! Also… that rickenbacker is legendary! 🎸

CCR has so many great classic rock songs, John started a solo career in the 90's and had some great songs like Centerfield and the old man down the road. I always think of my mom when I hear born on the bayou, one of her favorite songs. She has good taste in music.

The look on people's faces when they first hear Fogerty singing on "Born on the Bayou", especially if they've never heard Creedence before, is priceless. The song is a great example of something simple executed to perfection. It's just 3 simple chords, and the rhythm guitar is hanging on the E chord almost all of the time. The tremolo and tone of the guitars is perfect, thick and crunchy. The bass line is really fun, just the right amount of cowbell and clap track (or whatever that is), simple lyrics but still brilliant and to the point, even inventing a new word (chooglin'), and that Voice! Try listening on headphones and just focus on any one instrument to appreciate this.

CCR covered "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" originally released by Gladys Knight & the Pips and later by Marvin Gaye. It was another hit for CCR not only because of John Fogerty's southern fried vocals but his lead guitar filled in much of the 11 minutes of the song.

We saw John Fogerty play a sold out show at Red Rocks last weekend. It's just amazing that at the ripe old age of 78 his voice still carries almost the same power and grit that he had back in '69 when Born on the Bayou was recorded. And he still has the range! For a baritone this song is kind of high to sing, and he can still do it all the way through. Fantastic show. I read in an interview with the drummer Doug Clifford that he felt this song was his best recording. Creedence was considered to be the American version of the Beatles.

Flat bottom canoe basically, with low sides, with the hum and buzz of insects, quiet rustling of critters, the splash of a gar fish, or alligator sliding into the water. Soothing ASMR with an overdose of serotonin. That's CCR.

Former members tried to sue John Fogerty of using his voice on his solo music, but judge denied their lawsuit because they can't copyright John Fogerty's voice. His voice is so iconic. Like others have said, "at 78, his voice is still strong"

JOhn does have that distinctive voice and if you hear him talk nowadays, he is such a quiet man . he isn't from Louisianna as others have mentioned. The closest he got to the bayou was that he was in the Army reserves at Fort Knox in Kentucky

Britt, thank you for digging this one up!! I served on US Navy ships for several years during the Vietnam era off the coast of Vietnam supporting our aircraft flying off the carriers. Several other electronics techs and I talked our bosses into letting us build a "Radio Station" on our ship. We actually got an affiliation with the Armed Services Radio & TV Network in the course of this endeavor. Of course, we had to get the ship's Captain's permission to "repurpose" the print shop so we asked him to spin the first record on "KFOX" when we got it all wired and running. He thought that would be cool.
Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Proud Mary" was the first record we broadcast (closed circuit, within the ship) but Captain Bowlan didn't know "Creedence Clearwater Revival" from a door stop. His heart was in the right place though. I keyed the mike for him, and he announced "Here's Clarence Creedwater with Proud Mary." We struggled not to laugh. He was a great skipper and a really nice guy but I guess we all listened to different music!! We broadcast KFOX Radio for the next couple of years every WESTPAC Cruise we made. John Fogarty and "Clarence Creedwater" were one of the favorites along with most of the other popular music of the late sixties and early seventies.

What ship, I worked flight deck on the Enterprise and Kitty Hawk during the 70's and 80's, music like CCR got us through some long out at sea periods, and certain songs put me right back on the ship, the smell of JP and the sounds of the cat shots, and afterburners. Press on Shipmate..

@@davidgross990 After 2 1/2 years of ET-A School and several C-Schools, I served on board the USS Fox DLG33 for 3 years and then 3 more years on shore duty/ET-B School in San Diego. After B-School, I served two more years on USS Reeves CG24, out of Pearl Harbor. We did have a bit of JP on board for the helos and our "miniature flight deck." It wasn't much compared to the Enterprise but it could hold our two helos. The Fox came back from WESTPAC with the Enterprise in '70 or '71. I think that cruise finished in '71.
It's good to hear from someone who was there about the same time.
      -Gary

Huge success from 1969-1971 with 14 top ten singles and 5 top 10 albums, however, this group from El Centro, California was wracked with disagreements over buisiness and artistic control. Much like Fleetwood Mac, hugely successful with Lyndsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks joining in 1975, but the ensuing years laid waste with interpersonal relationship problems within this band as well. What dichotomy to be so massively successful with music yet the polar opposite with intersonal relationships. I do agree, however, not knowing any better I would have guessed this band to be from the bayou as well based on this song. Gotta tip my hat to John Fogerty's vocals on this one. Great reaction, TY.

The Creedence boys are from El Cerrito, California. The east bay area. They formed when in junior high school and played around the bay area for about 10 years under the name Blue Velvets, then The Golliwogs. They changed their name to Creedence Clearwater Revival in 1967-8 when they got signed to Fantasy Records, a small jazz label. No, never been to the south until later in their career.

In 1969 I had just graduated from college, and taken a new job working for the man. On a Saturday night, on my way home after a bit of partying, windows down, and listening to the local AM station, the DJ introduced a new song. 30 seconds in and I had the sound cranked as loud as I could get my poor little car radio to go. The song was Oh Susie Q, and it was that distinctive beat that you hear on so many of their songs and that you are hearing on this one. So many great rock artists are easily identifiable by their voice, but CCR always had that unique beat. By the end of the song I was singing aloud with them, and I predicted they would be the next big thing.

This song is from 1969, and the group started (( as CCR)) about 1967 or '68. My favorite band in High School. They were from Northern California, I believe. John Fogerty on lead and Tom Fogerty on rhythm guitar. Also with Stu Cook and Doug Clifford.

John Fogerty is in my mind the greatest folk songwriter.
You should look up an interview he did about his songs it’s an hour long but you will love it. He wrote Proud Mary and sang it for his wife on their wedding day. Green River is another great song. But the name actually was a drink he loved when he was a kid.
I love all of your reactions. Just watching your facial expressions like this song is great. Also most all of Fogerty’s songs had something to do with his life
