I was very impressed by the lesbian episode, but I couldn't get past the first 10 minutes of this extremely sexist and misandrist episode, claiming that men are often either gross or tyrannical - and thus responsible for women's choices. The irony of anti-male sexism is that it obliviously embraces the female hypo-agency and male hyper-agency that it purports to oppose. Women not doing something? Men's fault. Men not doing something? men's fault. Further, the fact that such messages are received normally or even enthusiastically, undermines the truth of them as a preponderance of such men would create too hostile an environment to say it in without massive backlash. There is no account here of female patterns of power, controlling misbehavior or responsibility (only the male form). Nor do we hear of the many social pressures (just as often from women) and forms of violence or deprivation men face that women often don't. The admirable and moving compassion for women and gays in the episode on lesbianism is nowhere to be found here.

I find it intriguing that nowadays, this issue isn't subjective to Chinese women, but for almost every racial/national demographic of women. Is it me, or does Sharon speak more formally than some people? I'm somewhere on an intermediate level (I'm Taiwanese American who spoke a tiny bit of Mandarin, but later improved some when I married a Chinese woman) but I seem to have a harder time understanding her. This is good for me at least, because it'll definitely help me improve more. Improvement is definitely needed because I feel my Chinese has gotten stagnant because after fifteen years of marriage my wife and I basically use all the same words. Keep it up though, Eileen! These topics are interesting and relevant and are great for intermediate speakers like myself.
Wow, what a fascinating discussion. It's like first, second, and third wave feminism all hit over about 15 years. Thank you for being so frank and open. It's wonderful to hear young women's voices from China.
8:10 I think this is a misconception. While women are young, they can live and work comfortably for themselves, but after the age of 40-50 years, 99% of them admit that not starting a family on time was the biggest mistake in their life. It’s stupid to promote life for single women. Women and men are created to live in a family, and not alone. you just need to learn to coexist correctly and mutually beneficially. 10:10 in this case, saying “marriage is not necessary” would be a mistake. It would be correct to say “you need to approach marriage with a person carefully, in order to choose the right person", and not the one with whom you will break up after a few years, on your or his initiative. It is not necessary to marry immediately after coming of age, but you must definitely prepare for the right marriage with the right person, even if it will be 10-20 years in the future. 36:15 Example of all countries in the world shows that government only cares about single people as long as they remain able to work. After aging and/or loss of able to work, no one needs them anymore, and no one wants to allocate resources to them. Neither for man nor for woman. Do not create optimistic illusions, world is very practical and ruthless, and will always be so. 37:48 if the person is rich - yes. But if a person is poor or of average income, who and why will give him such an expensive and complex device as an "android assistant"? And its maintenance will also cost money, where to get it from? From pension? How many? Or will the state pay for it? What category of citizens? There are too many questions, and anything with too many questions - is unreliable. And I wouldn’t want my old parents to depend on something unreliable. Otherwise, I was very interested in listening your discussion. There are things on which I completely agree with you. But there are things that raise too many questions and seem more like dreams, than something promising or real.
Yeah I think it’s really important to think wholistically over the entire lifetime which is hard to do.. these attitudes are driven by an assumption that people are emotionally okay and physically okay being alone their entire life.. that assumption is flawed
@@cristina8868 Yes you guessed it, I have never seen or heard this. I don’t know in what region of the world and what category of people, in old age, live as you described. I judge by myself, by my surroundings, by my friends who live in Eastern Europe, Ireland, Canada, East Asia, and their experiences. Despite the good quality of life, everything is always stressful, you have to work hard and constantly save, and this does not improve even when you approach retirement age, plus physical weakness and chronic illnesses add to this. I don’t know what cases of happy, lonely old age you are talking about, but I would really like to know about these 0.1% of cases.
Prosperous marriage isn’t only based on financially but mutual trust & showing affectionate towards each other & also be there for one another during times of distress
She questioned the meaning of marriage so I'll give my answer. Marriage is indeed a way of locking yourself with someone, and that's what's beautiful about it. It's like saying "You can now tell me everything about yourself and I won't run away", and both have no choice but to actually know about each other deeply. In a casual relationship, you'll only ever see the surface level because one may be afraid to show their true self in order to avoid scaring the partner away. The point of marriage is to remove that barrier
I though the analysis was superficial until Eileen shared her opinion at 6:13.. complaining about men is half the problem the other must be related to women.. if they are economically self sufficient perhaps their expectations to meet a man may rise beyond what’s realistic.. on the other hand women’s changed behavior, attitudes, etc may be very unattractive to what men look for in a woman.. Can never look at a large issue like this from one side.. great content Eileen!
Not only that, but it's been showed time and time again that women are simple not attracted to men that make less money than them, or are somehow lower status. So what she said does not hold up. When women get wealthy, they don't just accept nice comparable men, they now look at even richer men, of whom there are very few. The whole conversation is the same feminist nonsense that has been ruining the west for 40 years already.
Great video. Can you explain 对数? Pleco and other dictionaries translate it as "logarithm" but it appears to be used as more as "calculation" or "number". Thanks
Sharon is very likable and brilliant imho. She's not necessarily right in her predictions but she makes a decent case)) I can't help but feel a bit envious to her...naivety 😇 along with rooting for her 🤞🤩
I lived in China for many years as a native New Yorker. I learned to speak Mandarin Chinese to fluency. Therefore I was able to talk to local people about this issue. It is not an easy one to discuss because there are many pressures that women are burdened with in Chinese society, and there are many issues that Chinese men are burdened with. Because of this there can be a clash between men and woman on what they believe the marriage and family structure should look like there is still some residual old-fashioned male dominant ideas that permanent the culture and the women are pushing against it even with my in-laws, I see some of the fights that they have stem from leftover ideas from a highly male dominated culture. Also, the men have to pay a dowry which can amount to a lot of money, the men need to have a house, a car, and a good career in order to secure a decent marriage. Now these days with economic hardships, it is hard for men to have all these conditions in place before they are married.
As a man who is creating a very advanced dating AI simulator, this conversation deeply scared me. My goal is to motivate people to learn how to speak with others properly and not be afraid of dating real person (unite people), but instead it seems like people would rather date an AI robot than a real person? Did I fucked up, did we all fucked up? Does this mean the end of love and relationships as such, does this mean the end of what it means to be a human? If Sharon truly believes we don't need men, we just need an AI, isn't this the worst possible outcome of our society? I thought that at least what will remain in 5 years will be true human touch and skinship will be valuable, but according to this video there are other ways and that is very depressing. I can't be the only one who realizes all the consequences of this.
But what do women need men for? If men treated women like human beings we wouldn't be here. I think it's great more and more women are realising they can have a better life without husbands who treat them like shit. Men are to blame for this.
It's not weird at all. AI will solve many issues, including low birth rate. AI can do things like developing fetuses in artificial wombs, for example. Though there is a great issue of nations abusing it to mass produce babies/certain types of babies
I can understand but I don't share her opinion to not having children and not getting married. I try to remain optimistic even after all the Ls. However, for the consequences of a aging society, she's desillusional, in my opinion : No state will "fund" a zero baby policy, welfare will remain for couples. Single people will be always the more taxed. Retirement insurance is a disillusion, save and live frugally when you are old. Same situation as old people nowadays (insurance companies are selling a product, don't be fool). No one will take care of you... Do you think that other people's children are going. to take care of you ? Not for. very good pay especially when the labor force is rare... Or maybe immigration... To conclude : don't be influence by other opinions especially if they want to sell you something. Life is really not easy but stay optimistic, with a bit of luck you will find someone (maybe marriage, having kids) and do some concessions, it's going to be okay😉
Now the Chinese society shows a conflict of generations. The young generation of Chinese is more educated and that causes conflict too. 很有意思的视频和采访,你们辛苦了!❤
Eileen should interview a man, most of whats said here is from a woman's point of view. Men also need to think if its worth it for marriage, since there are many issues that rise up, just like from a womens point of view if its worth it.
Hell yes we want to be alone and love it. I am an Aunty of nearly 60 and love my life. I was married but it did not suit me. Now I have an amazing international life. I used to live in China. Now I live in Myanmar. I see young chinese women waking up and realizing it is ok to live their own lives.
Great topic, it's not personal, I know there are limits to what be said but they make it sound like in China you do what you feel like doing. I think the society, parents and the government have lots of creative ways to pressure people before they get overwhelmed with too much choice and personal freedom
That's very short-sighted. If you don't marry and have children, you have literally failed at life. Anyway, happiness comes and goes. But making a loving home and family will bring true happiness in the long-term.
Many many thanks, because it represents, as usual, a tremendous amount of work. It's very interesting to get to know your opinions about this. You're actually the only online chinese teacher i know about who really attempts to go more thoroughly into that kind of societal topics and provide us deeper insights. I really really appreciate that. I'd like to make a suggestion though, because I don't think this could be qualified as intermediate chinese level... As far as i can tell, you guys speak with a high pace, providing a lot of details, using a somehow rich and developped vocabulary. Maybe you could figure out a way to divide the interview betweeen intermediate and advanced chinese ; for instance you could begin with intermediate level then raise up progressively the level of difficulty.
Great job on providing an insight, Thank you so much. I am a foreigner and always wonder why my Chinese senior always says "Oh it's okay I'm not looking for a man to marry with" or something along the line with that. She even went overboard and said things like "Dating woman is also acceptable and even preferable!". Would be nice if you could dig down on this issue too.
Spoiler: They still do want to get married. They just can't find a partner that meets their standards, and then when they're 35 and "career focused" and barren, they can't figure out why no successful guy who meets their criteria wants to date them
Seems this topic and especially reasons deep there can be huge revolutionary force changing society. This also seems "hangover" effect from 20-30 years economic boom.
Just found this argument has major flaw . When discussing marriage they talk about psychological needs but in the case of non marriage they just discuss the material things , what about psychological needs then no emotional exchange , growing old , parents dying and no kids literally no one’s there
Pre-chewing food for a kid was a funny discussion. As gross as it might seem to adults, the baby is too young to care and in fact, there is a benefit by boosting natural immunity through germ exposure along with the very practical reason of turning it into soft baby-food which they can digest more easily. The old 奶奶们 sometimes have it right (but not when it comes to dressing babies too hot, air-conditioning and cold drinks)
Define suitable Partner! Here in the west the financial expectations are so high. There is a very small percentage of men can accommodate these unreasonable demands
Marrying an older Chinese lady would great, they are beautiful and would be more mature and hopefully more open minded to new things in life. I would give it a go, but I dislike date sites to many scammers on them.
I think we need to understand the first and principal reason why nature needed to create a man and woman and why there are physical and related mental dissimilarities, although we are the same species. As we are living more and more from the cerebral cortex only, so our thoughts are not completely grounded in the wholeness of nature. Before a woman starts looking for spirituality in a man she should start looking for spirituality in herself and understand why the creation needed to create men and women and should there be roles that would therefore be given to the specific genders based upon the source of creation; Why didn't the universal force create human beings or other species as unigender e.g. amoeba? what is the need to have men and women separately? It's true that social media has brought a lot of information to the surface, but this is information without roots. I personally feel that this uprooted information is causing chaos that is tending to grow into a knot that probably will need to have to be cut, like operations and we will then have to return to the roots.
why does no one ever ask Chinese men for why?which country men support bride price, car, house, and hand over their wage to wife like Chinese men do?India?
Waiting for the knight in shining armor or Prince Charming is a delusional trap that many women find themselves. They aren’t willing to settle for less and if they do, they’re often quick to divorce because even if they figure out the perfect guy doesn’t exist, they’re still subconsciously thinking they deserve better. In addition, guys need to step it up and be their best selves. It takes a foundation of unrelenting hard work, patience, communication and despite each other’s character flaws: unconditional love. Good luck.
I think nowadays men need to learn a reality that many women have high earnings. They need equal treatment, or respect, especially when her earnings are more than the men. In the ancient past men go to war, in distant past men went to work, women had low education and stay at home. But it's different now
If only one generation decided to not have kids anymore, the family, the city, the country, the continent, the world, the civilization would end just like that.
It seems that no one considers entering into a marriage on the basis that each partner will work and income and expenses pooled. It's a great way of life and means that each partner can enjoy a far better lifestyle than would be possible it each of them were single.
I think that this trend has two outcomes: either technology will be so advanced so there will be no need in youth working force and creativity, and the society will be self-sufficient. Or the governments will somehow force the people to have children. For example by restricting all the goods and services only to married couples with children, contrary to what Sharon said. Otherwise economies will collapse. Will see. 谢谢你的视频!
What was the reason “Female Homosexuality “ topic has not been addressed at all despite the fact that the lesbian population in China is on the rise ? It seems that it is still a taboo subject for many people even though the estimated LGTB population in the country may be nearing 90 millions ? In fact, the majority of women get more satisfaction emotionally and sexually between themselves for the reasons we all are aware of: misogynistic traditions of the Chinese society coupled with selfishness and a self-centered mentality of 90% of Chinese men. Given the fact that the live-streaming phenomenon among lesbians is thriving in the country and that the various lesbian communities (PPLs, TPls , TTLs etc…) are becoming more and more vocal, visible and influential. Big cities such as ChengDu, Chongqing, Shanghai, Beijing, Hangzhou, Shenzhen etc… have a large lesbian population especially in ChengDu, nicknamed as the LaLa City of China or (姬都), where only the chopsticks are straight ! 😉😁🤣 The Chinese show biz industry is populated with lesbian and bisexual actresses and female singers, the SNH48 all-female entertainment company and its 4 other regional branches are also notorious for their lesbian-themed entertainment as well as for their members’ open female-oriented relationships.
From my point of view as a Western man, this guest's views seem rather naive to me. For example she says men have a responsibility to support the woman emotionally, listen to her problems, to which I'd say, well, yes and no. The man needs to care about her wellbeing. But to expect a man to respond emotionally the same way a women would respond isn't very realistic and won't be helpful in the long run. Men should be strong, for their own sake and for everyone's sake. Feeding the baby with pre-chewed food doesn't strike me as nearly as harmful as giving them soft drinks; even juice because it's concentrated sugar isn't that healthy. And then probably it's the parents who are giving the baby the iPad, which is VERY unhealthy for brain development.

Hi
Hi, Eileen! Thank you so much for the amazing content you put out, I've been following you for 4 years and this is definitely my favorite Chinese-language channel on TH-cam.
Also, it'd be amazing if you could add soft-coded subtitles to the videos, it would help us people trying to sentence-mine so much! It's really hard and time-consuming to do it without them. Thanks again for your amazing work and keep it up! ❤😊
I think she's just educated and quite well spoken, she talks like a lot of university educated people you'll meet in China.
Absolutely. She definitely prepared for this podcast and was occasionally referencing notes with choice phrases.
i think she’s using some more academic/journalist speech to match the tone of the subject
Wow, what a fascinating discussion. It's like first, second, and third wave feminism all hit over about 15 years. Thank you for being so frank and open. It's wonderful to hear young women's voices from China.
Eileen老师越来越美
your videos are always interesting,我一直期待,加油 💛
Marriage is based on trustworthy, caring, loving 🥰 helping one other in needs not materialistic ❤❤❤
Hey sister, I finished your HSK1 V3.0 a long time ago, I am waiting for your next HSK. kept going on.
thought provoking stuff indeed 👏
@@ТарасМакаренко-ф3шIts ok. There will be plenty of women for very few men to be happy with 😂
你们的作品好稀罕好珍贵。吸引我兴趣的地道中文节目比较少。不仅是很专业的,而且很有意义。你们和家有儿女对我学习中文的旅程是不可或缺的。谢谢Eileen 🙏
Very interesting topic. I had no idea about that in Chinese society. Thank you.
As Italian I have to admit that Chinese is badass language, a true challenge for who likes Asian languages🙂
Thank you Eileen. Not only do you know to ask great questions, you’re great at answering and providing commentary too. Frankly better than this guest!
Prosperous marriage isn’t only based on financially but mutual trust & showing affectionate towards each other & also be there for one another during times of distress
super interesting!
You`re doing great!keep it up!
If baby food is not available.......
Wonderfully explained.
Thanks
These two characters are separate words, 对 means couple, 数 means number. So together, it means, the number of (married) couples.
人数 is number of people. 对数 is number of couples. Perhaps
Well said.
Is there a link yo the article Sharon cited in the beginning? My Chinese speaking friends are asking me to back up my claims with evidence. 😊
Do the transcripts provided by mandarin corner separate the sentences, as shown in the subtitles ?
Yes
One of your best videos.
Please, take a look on Nikola Tesla and his prediction for the future.
The life of the bee will be the life of human race.
But what do women need men for? If men treated women like human beings we wouldn't be here. I think it's great more and more women are realising they can have a better life without husbands who treat them like shit. Men are to blame for this.
i had same feelings after watching this video
Yeah I felt bad with this ideas of independence that we are losing the real love ,caring and family feeling with each other.
这些视频很好,很帮我提高我的听力,更有甚至很有意思
weird tangent about AI at the end, but i like the video! the guest has a lot of interesting insights
However, for the consequences of a aging society, she's desillusional, in my opinion :
No state will "fund" a zero baby policy, welfare will remain for couples.
Why not do everything together? Collect money to buy a house a car and later divide housework? That seems fair.
I think there is no male in the world who wanted to get married ever
如果你觉得某个特定的男人或女人有问题,那么你的判断很可能是对的。但如果你对所有异性都抱有轻蔑,那么你可能需要反省自己。
Hell yes we want to be alone and love it. I am an Aunty of nearly 60 and love my life. I was married but it did not suit me. Now I have an amazing international life. I used to live in China. Now I live in Myanmar. I see young chinese women waking up and realizing it is ok to live their own lives.
interesting helpful for chinese learners indeed.
Great topic, it's not personal, I know there are limits to what be said but they make it sound like in China you do what you feel like doing. I think the society, parents and the government have lots of creative ways to pressure people before they get overwhelmed with too much choice and personal freedom
I agreed.
The Success of women is not marriage.
The happiness on your own is more important.
That's very short-sighted.
If you don't marry and have children, you have literally failed at life.
Anyway, happiness comes and goes. But making a loving home and family will bring true happiness in the long-term.
Everyone wishes me to find the right partner, but yes its better if they wish me to be happy in my own way😊
Many many thanks, because it represents, as usual, a tremendous amount of work.
Thank you for this cideo
When discussing marriage they talk about psychological needs but in the case of non marriage they just discuss the material things , what about psychological needs then no emotional exchange , growing old , parents dying and no kids literally no one’s there
Find the flaws in your comment 😊😂😅❤ I'll do it!
I screamed of laughter seeing the reaction of the younger person not knowing she was raised the same way😊😂❤!
Adding the word "some" to Chinese girls will be very accurate to your statement

Define suitable Partner! Here in the west the financial expectations are so high. There is a very small percentage of men can accommodate these unreasonable demands
nice video
Marrying an older Chinese lady would great, they are beautiful and would be more mature and hopefully more open minded to new things in life.
I would give it a go, but I dislike date sites to many scammers on them.
It all lacks one thing. Love.😢
And there will not be anyone to visit you when you are old. You are a natures failure. A meaningsless life.
挺有意思的!哪儿都有这个情况。
Can you also do a video on why Chinese men don't want to get married anymore?
why does no one ever ask Chinese men for why?which country men support bride price, car, house, and hand over their wage to wife like Chinese men do?India?
I like the girl in black, her thinking is very up to date 😮
I'm surprised this is called intermediate, it seems advanced (for those already fluent).
因为我缺少社交技能,所以很寂寞。Sharon所讲说的给我点儿希望,但是我也缺少技术技能。那怎吗办?
I think that this trend has two outcomes: either technology will be so advanced so there will be no need in youth working force and creativity, and the society will be self-sufficient. Or the governments will somehow force the people to have children. For example by restricting all the goods and services only to married couples with children, contrary to what Sharon said. Otherwise economies will collapse. Will see.
谢谢你的视频!
What will she do if the electricity shuts down for a week?
generator, solar, inductor. we have everything in Myanmar a country with blackouts every day. China made for us. No problems.
The Chinese show biz industry is populated with lesbian and bisexual actresses and female singers, the SNH48 all-female entertainment company and its 4 other regional branches are also notorious for their lesbian-themed entertainment as well as for their members’ open female-oriented relationships.

Getting married is like buying a time share, seems like a good idea until you finalize the transaction.
Getting married is a blessing. Some people dream of it. Some people want to carry on the family legacy. Society has made marriage a bad idea.
我觉得你这个嘉宾说话可能比一般的嘉宾难一点,是不是她用了一些书面语,或者比较少用的成语?
I really hate marriage 😑
Married life is hell.
No it's not easy to find, women are so complicated.
在世界某些地方,人们为了经济利益和税收优势结婚。
The talking robot in your nursing home will be feeding you in the old mother way lol.
I think they’re planning all this bullshit just to run from the responsibility 😂
现在医疗条件好了,45岁也可以
不过其实是养孩子更辛苦
Science needs to perfect artifical wombs asap. So that women who want children can have a choice of not going through the pain.
