Planescape Torment used to be my favorite RPG, until Disco Elysium came out. It's the first game in 20 years that stopped trying to copy Torment, but stood on its shoulders to take the next step to advance the genre. It's the true spiritual successor to Torment not because it tries to be Torment (looking at you, Numenera), but because it has the same relentless commitment to its world and its characters, as well as its willingness embrace the risk of trying something new and original, knowing full well that failure would probably mean the end of the studio.
It’s interesting because Numenera claims to be the spiritual successor of Planescape yet is nothing like it except having a bunch of text. It was still good imo. You are right on the money that this game truly feels like Planescape, and in many ways surpassed it. It always bothered me that high Wisdom and Intelligence felt like the only way to get the most out of the game. But in Disco, EVERY build, EVERY skill has some value and can offer unique experiences. It’s just a damn good game
I dug Planescape, but I'd say 60% of those deep backstories were just window-dressing that didn't deepen the experience for me. They were nice but totally unnecessary... and never funny. Elysium is a completely new level of depth. Almost every single character has something interesting to add or connect, or is just flat-out hilarious. When the lady you harass outside the bookstore ends up being connected to the guy from the boardwalk... you know the one... wow. That hit on all kinds of levels. Nothing in Planescape hit me like that.
