I wished I had seen him play live. I have seen him in several clips here on YT and NBA TV.
And stars I did see in their prime, Rick Barry, Julius Erving and Paul Westphal, all revered Elgin and called him their favorite. So that carried huge weight for me!
And Oscar Robertson, expressed disappointment when told Bill Russell was named the NBA's greatest player after 35 years. Oscar was asked who he would pick. Answer "Elgin Baylor."

I remember 2 distinct stories in his book about bigotry. One was that his nickname "Rabbit" came from his running as fast as he could as a little boy because 2 or 3 white young men were trying to force him into their car to kidnap him. The other was when the Police came to his Family's home because his Sister got into a fight with a white girl and gave his Father a choice: either they take Elgin's Sister and do whatever they please with her or the Father had to beat her with a belt in front of them. His Father reluctantly beat her with the belt until the Police said they were satisfied,, and his Sister was never the same, eventually left home, and died young.
