    • @WispUnderscore
      @WispUnderscore ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Plusieurs choses me font penser que c'est une fake news / de la propagande :
      1. Il n'y a littéralement aucune source dans la description. Même si ça se base sur des faits vérifiables (la visite de Macron en Chine et les accords), aucun média (en tout cas en France et dans la sphère anglophone) n'a parlé de ça. Et si cette hypothèse de vente était avérée, je suis certains que tout les médias et la classe politique française se serrait emparé de cette affaire
      2. La ligne éditoriale de cette chaîne présente toujours la Chine de manière positive. Même si c'est pas suspect en soi, cette envie de toujours présenter la Chine sous son meilleur angle et ne jamais parlé des défauts (sans forcément parler du Xinjiang) ça pourrait s'apparenter à une tentative de mise en valeur de la Chine dans un but de propagande. (Sur ce point, c'est juste une hypothèse, on ne peut pas être sûr que ça soit vraiment le cas)
      3. La stratégie de Macron dans l'Indopacifique c'est de gardée une présence là-bas. Ca serait totalement contre productif de vendre cette île, d'autant plus qu'il y a des français qui vivent là-bas, que c'est une réserve de bio diversité importante et que l'île contribue à offrir à la France une ZEE massive et une présence à travers le globe (sans même parler des ressources halieutiques)
      Bref, pour moi la vente des îles Kerguelen est faux, rien n'indique que ce soit réel mise à part cette vidéo

    Along with the island is the 200 mile exclusive economic zone. Fishing may become a valued asset and as other have said its strategic value to counter US military threats. Further, what lies below the seas, oil? gas? hydrates? Has the island been explored for mineral resources? For China, this would be tempting.

      There is no guarantee that China will make something significant from this island, but there is no reason to believe that it is impossible.
      Edit: Of course, with gale-force winds for 3/4 of the year, China would likely need to make the island an experimental AI fisheries/production zone for it to be economically worthwhile. Questions to ask,
    1. Does the island contain rare earth elements resources?
    2. Does it allow to develop infrastructures by destroying the unique eco system and valuable creatures on the island? For instance, the penguins are protected by international laws.
    3. It located far away from ports. It's very hard to ship cargo to and from the island. Cost of maintenance is too high.
    4. It's far away from the continents from Africa, Australia and south Asia. There is no geographic political value, but fishing resources.
    5. 60 billions price tag is a joke. I don't think Chinese leaders are stupid. It is a trap for government budget. How many roads and infrastructures can be built from 60 billions USD?
    6. Strong wind during almost the whole year, it's not suitable for cargo shipping or airfreight.

    Kerguelen island is strategically important for China for defensive as well as commercial purposes. 60 billion dollars is worth the advantages to China as it is located far south near the South Pole which makes it possible to guard the southern route. The deep water enables nuclear submarines and large aircraft carriers to dock at the coastline. The relatively mild weather on the island makes it habitable for people to live. It can be a strategic challenge for the usa and its allies as the island lies close to Australia.

      With all due respect to the chinese and their achievements: There are limits to what you can do. And anyone who knows enough about geology will know that the Kerguelen Islands are an absolute waste of money/investment. You can, literaly, do *nothing* with it. Oh trust me, colonial powers in the past *all tried* to make something out of the Kerguelens. They all failed. Gee I wonder why? The reasons are more or less simple:

    • @thequantumalchemist2965
      @thequantumalchemist2965 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      1: Totaly bad climate. The Kerguelens are similiar to Greenland or Iceland. It´s cold, and despite the cold it is dry. Nothing grows there. You do not even have enough drinking water for that matter. And even if you wanted to set up greenhouses there, *you cannot,* see below for that.
      2: Dangerous climate: The Kerguelens are in what is known as the "roaring forties". An altitude that is well known and infamous for their extremely strong and dangerous winds. The reason being that at that altitude there is basicaly only water and *zero landmass,* aka nothing to block or slow down the winds. Hence the Kerguelens are hit *by the full force of the oceans winds.* Storms and harsh winds are a normal sight on the Kerguelens. The sea is also rough and dangerous. In fact thanks to that, the Kerguelens are not even suited as a port. Too strong and dangerous winds. Most ships would drown or take damage before able to enter or leave the port. Same for any helicopters, planes or airports too.
      3: Remote and desolate. No matter how you look at it the Kerguelens lay in an remote and desolate part of this world. A dangerous one too like said above.
      4: If all of this was not bad enough already, it gets even worse: Most of the Kerguelens are protected by UNESCO. Yes, while the Kerguelens have *very harsh* climate, at the same time they have very unique, cold-oceanic climate too. There is flora and fauna that you will only find there and nowhere else. Hence nearly all of these islands are under direct protection, you are hence *not* allowed to do anything with it except put research stations there. In fact, there are a few such reseach stations on the Kerguelens. And their population hence ranges from 50 to maybe a little over 100 people, all scientists living in research stations. That said, speaking of climate for reference: The Kerguelens rarely see temperatures below 0C°, at the same time they rarely see temps above 10C° too. Also like said there is little rain and not enough freshwater too. Still the climate is indeed very unique and so is the flora and fauna on the island and all of that is worth protecting.
      Like I said with all due respect... I don´t see how anyone, and be they the smartest people on earth, can make anything of (monetary)value out of the Kerguelens. Literaly, all you can do with it is use it as a research station and that´s it. However you will not get any investments back, well at least not in form of money lol, you will if anything get your investment back in form of biology/knowledge, however do not expect to see only a single cent you invested back... lol cause you won´t ;(
      Honestly I have hence no idea why Malaysia would even offer a billion for it... All I can think of is altruistic motives, that the malaysians sincerely have an interest in the protection of the environment and our planet. Since when it comes to money/economy... it´s a black hole and waste of money, literaly. I do know that Malaysia also changed their attitude towards environment and the protection of it. They started to take the protection of their environment very serious in the past years(similiar like Indonesia their environment suffered *tremendously* the past decades... Take a look at how some of their rivers looked like a few years ago... And while not perfect they look a *lot better* now. Thanks to the malaysians and indonesians taking action because it just really was *that bad* in the past... and it is still far from ideal too...). Hence I do suspect altruistic motives here since like I said, economic wise, there is nothing to gain at all. Also geostrategicaly there is no gain because you cannot even use the Kerguelens as a reliable port either 😯

      If you read anything but propaganda, you'll know the answer.
      The Kerguelen fake news is full of irony pointing at France. The real issue is South China Sea. There are many other countries involved. Let's just focus on the two.
      Kerguelen is a former "terra nullius" (a vacant piece of land belonging to no one / or, a century ago, a territory deprived of any form of government). That's what the Spratlys used to be.
      Kerguelen are a "sui generis" province of France, i.e. a province which has self-organized and acted as an administrative entity without ever being chartered/incorporated. That is what China (inacuretly) claim all of Taiwan Island was before China declared it a province of the Empire.
      South China Sea is merely Chinese by name: there are so many neighboring countries in close vicinity of the uninhabited Paracels and Spratly islands (no permanent populations before the surge in testosterone levels). Some islands are closer to China; most islands have been visited by Chinese fishermen - among others - for ages, still.
      China claim on the Spratly Islands dates back to the French-Chinese war. In 1884, France invaded Tonkin and Taiwan, as a result China incorporated Taiwan in its territory (for ten years before finally losing control of it). The 1885 French-Chinese Treaty did not mention the islands. Since France displayed interest for the South China Sea islands as well, China made sure they were labelled Chinese on Chinese maps.
      The Paracels have long been formally claimed by China and Annam (a Chinese then French vassal state), there are legal grounds for both China and Vietnam. The Spratlys are a different story.
      In 1932, France officially claimed the Spratly Islands due to its Tonkin colony. Great Britain approved the French claim. In 1933, China formally issued its own claim. France administered and occupied the islands till 1940 and then again after 1948. China sat foot on a Spratly island in 1950. When Vietnam accessed to independence, the Spratly islands were not explicitly incorporated into the Vietnam states. According to a diplomatic memo of the 1960ies, France claim on the Spratly was still legally, if not practically, valid.
      The video on Kerguelen is just a reminder by China to France of how the "power of the day" can make a claim on a distant archipelago.

    6:08 - - 16 million dollars, yes, but at their value in 1803. That amount was in that moment bigger than the GDP of the U.S. for a whole year, and the transaction was possible only because the money was raised in England.
    Also, video's author does not explain that the "Louisiana" of 1803 is not the Louisiana state of today. The "Louisiana" of 1803 was a third of the continental U.S. of today (Alaska not being included).

      The United States paid Louisiana with part of the French loan.
      France provided the money, troops, armament, military leadership, and naval support that tipped the balance of military power in favor of the United States and paved the way for the Continental Army's eventual victory. We know all too well how bad diplomatic relations between France and the United States were until 1917. Napoleon knew how easily the United States can betray its friends. And that has never changed ...

    I have less information about China and Chinese people but being an Asian I know the Chinese mentality. It is an Asian mentality whether guided by communist or democratic ideology. Deep down it is different from the Western worldview of the world. Buying Kerguelen Island can not only help China but also world peace. Maybe it is a worthless piece of island for France but China can make it an important piece of land. Asian people are peace-loving people. They have a history of thousand years of civilization. They know how to live, thrive and help others. This is the beauty of Asian nations. We are proud of being Asian irrespective of where we are located. China and India are examples of Asia. Both are peace-loving nations.

    Australia should buy Kerguelen Island as an investment in the preservation of its national security. Perhaps France could have an "auction" and sell it to the highest bidder! The harshness of the climate and unsuitability of the island for economic development will keep the price well below 60 billion euros. China is also not going to pay top price for it. The suggestion in the video of using it for a submarine base is a good one.

    • @icebaby6714
      @icebaby6714 ปีที่แล้ว

      But France hates Australia for cancelling the multibillion dollar submarine deal with France and that is why it intends to sell the island to China to counter Australia from the southwest. And France is the good friend and trading partner of China, China signed 40 billion dollar deal for purchasing 292 new planes from Airbus during Macron's recent visit to China.
