How come energy is released during a catabolic reaction? Isn’t energy required to break the bonds?

This topic troubled me for a while as well. I understood later that some molecules have a net release rather than absorption of energy when forming bonds. This is because some bonds are stronger than others. In a catabolic reaction where many different types of bonds are broken and formed, the net amount of energy from the reaction is positive, which means that the reaction will release energy. Im not too sure about this either

When the complex molecules are broken down, energy is released but energy is used up when the complex molecules are being formed
