Not gonna lie, I did not expect you to react to this particular Disney sequel. I also really love Mushu as a character (he's of my favorite Disney characters of all time), but I fully get how fans can see him as a full on antagonistic douche in this movie as his ego and selfishness was more exaggerated for the plot. It also hurts that Eddie Murphy didn't voice the character, his replacement did.

Of all the Disney direct-to-dvd sequels, this is one of the worst. Mushu becomes such an unlikable villain here, with no real punishment or redemption. The drama with Mulan and Chang's relationship is so bad. And they don't even resolve the big conflict at the end, no alience against the Mongols are formed because no one got married. China is doomed. And yet, this is still 100× better than the Mulan live-action remake.

      @cristalmagic8664 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

Yes, of the worst I feel that there are some redeemable ones such as:
Bambi 2 is a very nice sequel that shows the grief of loss and how both Bambi and his father form a nice bond, and the animation is very beautiful.
TLK2, here despite the low quality of the animation at least I try to tell a new story that wasn't bad at all.
Cinderella 3, the sequel is bad but this one is pretty good, good animation, Cinderella fights for her love and the prince has personality.
then we have this, The Hunchback of Notre Dame 2, Pocahontas 2, The Fox and the Hound 2...

Mulan is a young adult. So maybe 75+ years. I think she would be an ancestor. If Mushu is also immortal, they would probably be friends in the afterlife, but Mushu would probably serve the future bloodline of Mulan’s family

I think there being soulmates for the three is cute. It somewhat works up until the 3rd act. There were definetely better ways that a simple attraction between the secondary characters finding a love interest could have been framed. Mulan, Shang, and Mushu are more plot devices in the sequel. Which is the disappointment. They are there because you couldn't call it "Mulan II" otherwise. If they wanted to make the secondary characters primary characters they could have just focused on them getting into hyginx and finding love along the way. The arranged marriage to save China part complicates the decision a lot. And doesn't really get a proper resolution.

For me, this movie was OK
    7/10
    Underrated Cheesy flick!
Mulan was personally one of my all time favourite Disney movies and movies in general and so when the moment i saw this movie around I was puzzled as to why I have not heard of it, then I realized ... It was direct to DVD. I gave this movie a chance though despite my opinion on some of the other Disney straight to video sequels and boy am I glad I did as this movie is a ball to watch. The movie's plot is simple but perfectly functioning it is the story about Shang and Mulan being engaged to marry but before the wedding having to transport three princesses to another country for an arranged marriage that will end the war, all the time Mushu trying to destroy Mulan's wedding and the three princesses falling in love with three warriors from the first film. The movies scenery and animation are ace almost living up to the ridiculously high bar of the first. Now while the characters are flat and generic, with only the characters from the first standing out, they are funny and provide some cool character arcs. The direction lends this picture an amazing sense of pace despite the movie curiously lacking laid out acts. It makes for some funny jokes cute animation and fast paced even with a generic and schmaltzy plot.

Ok I need to defend this movie because it's kind of my thing XD.
Mushu's character arc didn't get resolved in the first film, as he said, he was a fraud who lied to Mulan and put her in grave danger because he wanted status. His motivations were never answered for aside from him acknowledging them as he never did anything against said goal and he gets what he wanted in the end with no consequences. With that premise, this movie is set in stage as he continues said plot arc to stay there, regardless of Mulan's feelings. This arc is only completed when he gets what he wants, Shang being gone, and sees how miserable he's made Mulan in the process - finally realizing it's not worth it. That's also why we get his whole "I'd give up a thousand pedestals to stop this". With that completed, he's able to use his antics he's been up to to finally do the right thing FOR her, even though its against his own interests - which is making sure she marries Shang like she wanted.
Mulan and Shang's yin-yang arc honestly works really well for me. I like how they're portrayed as very incompatible when conflict arises, it's refreshing to see and a sort of testament to the first film where they both take different routes to work for their fathers. Shang emmulating his and going forward with his blessing while Mulan went behind hers' back. This is actually a sort of bond for them as Shang in the first film softens toward her following her reveal when she says she did it to save her father. This carries over to how both of them want to do the right thing but are very different in how they approach it. Shang - who's said by his father to be extremely tactical and booksmart - approaches it objectively so he views the right thing as the execution of well laid out missions and statistics while not thinking about the human side. (Sort of example: when being told their army is hopelessly outnumbered, his response is to say he'll make each of his men fight like 10 Mongols). Mulan on the other hand is on the human side and emphasizes empathy. She disagrees with the law when it comes to things like a draft because, in her mind, it's wrong to draft her father who is crippled and already served.
We get some glimpses of this throughout the start of the film. Mulan is great at interacting with little kids because of her ability to understand where they're struggling and get through to them - Shang can hardly talk around them. That same Shang says he wants "as many kids as possible" while Mulan, who interacts with them, only wants one or two. Mulan wants a big wedding because we saw how excited her family is about the whole affair. Shang doesn't - sort of what difference does it make? The whole general good vs individual empathy then gets to become a real conflict in relation to the princesses because it's already primed. Shang is stonefaced at the notion of an arranged marriage despite having just proposed to Mulan while she's already thinking about how they must feel - and this goes on with their duty and heart debate.
A really good example of how this really comes into play is right after the carriage crashes. The first thing Mulan says is "I've seen happier princesses" while Shang immediately shuts her down with "that's the least of our worries".
And Mulan isn't being oblivious when she suggests following the river instead of the map. She says that out of concern when Shang suggests the fastest way to get to Qui Gong now is a route through bandit country - because she's thinking about them as people and not objectively about the time limit. She's trying to keep them safe.
And the fact that they do reach a compromise of finding a path in the village instead of going that way was a win and would've worked. It's the escalation with the princesses that throws them over the edge again. Mulan tells him she feels like he doesn't have a heart and they break up, and Shang DOESN'T TAKE A SECOND to acknowledge it. He jumps right back on his horse and just declares that they have a mission to complete, reasserting himself as the leader and they all need to follow him regardless of what they think. Him being mad at Mulan drives him to lead them away from the village and into bandit country against what they had talked about. - His actions are what caused Mei to get kidnapped and them to end up on the bridge in the first place - which is why I feel everything culminated together fr him and he apologized before letting go.
Losing him makes Mulan wake up and she becomes mission oriented, but still not at the expense of her own established morality, so she decides to go complete the mission herself whereas when Shang comes back, he's realized where he went wrong and goes to try and fix it.
I won't deny that the resolution of the movie has problems that they could've just fixed by having Mushu unite the two kingdoms when he was pretending to be The Golden Dragon of Unity --- but at the same time, China DID fall to the Mongol empire at one point so there's that - AND writing a fanfic taking off from the ending of this movie with the impending war they caused has been awesome!

This used to be my favorite Disney sequel when I was younger. But as I got older and rewatched it, what was I thinking? The first movie was a war epic. They turned the sequel into a romantic comedy. Also, just the irony of the "I wanna be like other girls" song, both because they're princesses, but also girls in the time period this is set in, probably weren't allowed or couldn't do all the things the song says they do.

For many, Mulan 2 is a Movida which denigrates the values of the first, especially on morality. But... I really liked this movie when I was young😅.
Yes there are flaws but there are positives that I liked. There is a lot of humor, the love stories set up are good, and the animation, without matching its predecessor, remains successful (it's not like Aladdin 2 or Beauty and the Beast 3 at least...) . I also like the fact that Mulan and Shang argue, it shows that a couple can be in conflict and that everything is not a fairy tale. Even Mushu acting selfishly makes him laugh, that I can't really hate him.
Well of course there are the flaws: Songs not as good as the first, no action and if the moral is very laudable, it gets lost a little throughout the film.
Anyway, if Mulan 2 isn't the best Disney sequel, it's a guilty pleasure for me. I understand those who don't like it and I don't force them to like it, but I think it's good entertainment and in reality, we've seen worse as a result...

I've never been so annoyed with a character I actually agree with so much. I mean I get it, I get Mulan's feelings over arranged marriage and following your heart, but how they portray it in this film, it's like Mulan was a normal modern woman plucked out of the 21 century and dropped into ancient China where she is completely unaware of the customs and expectations of the time and is completely aghast that this culture that has been this way for thousands of years is not automatically adapt to the ideals of a time that won't exist for another thousands of years.
Truly a girl ahead of her time.

It’s interesting how the creation of the Disney Princess franchise in 2000 and Mulan’s unique inclusion within the lineup affected her character design in the 2004 sequel. They really feminize her here. She’s overall more slender, appears taller, and her features are daintier, with a smaller head and mouth. Depending on the shot her eyes are also larger and rounder. Perhaps on top of now being a Disney Princess, her design was modified because she presents femininely the whole movie and is now a romantic lead

I disagree with the 3 princesses, they have so many responsibilities and purity they have to protray to the people. Not just being well fed. Having that amount of your actions being basically controlled so you dont tarnish the familys royal status would be stressful, making all three of the sisters want to be like other normal girls. Not to be in the spotlight all the time and live the lifes they want to pursue instead of being driven down a path they dont have much control over.

People are being exceptionally rude in these early comments. Thank you for reacting to this, Soph! This movie brings up interesting historical inaccuracies, though. For example, if an emperor wanted to make a political marriage, he would take a random woman, say "you're my daughter now" and present her as his daughter to the neighbouring kingdom- not send his three blood daughters. But they had a great dynamic, especially compared to the soldier trio, so I hardly mind.

I mean, the "follow your heart" message isn't even a good message, you heart could guide you to what you want, but that doesn't mean what you want its what you need or even if really good for you or others around you, think about toxic relationships, many times the abused one thinks is in love and they heart told them to stay on the relationship because they feel they would be nothing without the abuser
you were right about how that message was used on the movie, they had a duty that if it wasn't accomplished it would lead China to another war and bring more deaths, it was a very delicate issue and it was addressed poorly and even the solution was weak

To be honest I loved the first movie of Disney's Mulan (1998) better, because the first movie was the masterpiece, but the second movie... is the worst movie and worst Disney sequel ever because they've butchered and completely ruined Mushu; my favorite character in the first movie; by making him as the villain in the second movie.
But the live-action remake movies of Mulan,... oh, boy,... that movie is so boring and even the most worser than the second movie of Mulan, because there is NO Mushu in my opinion, but thank goodness I didn't see the live-action of Disney's Mulan in theaters and on Disney Plus, but thank goodness they skipped or banned that live-action remake movie from the theaters, and I love the classic movie version of Disney's Mulan (1998) WAY much better than that live-action remake movie version, because Disney's Mulan Live-action remake (2020) is the morst worst Disney live-action remake I ever heard in my life.

Oh god, what have you done? Why would you subject yourself to a Disney sequel like this that's so horrible and pointless? I don't even recommend people watch Mulan 2 as a bad movie.
