During the sequence when Mulan gets ready to take her father's armor and disguise herself as a man, you can see dragon imagery throughout the entire thing, to symbolize the great dragon that watches over the family. Conclusion: Mushu was unable to awaken the Great Dragon because it had already left, signifying that Mulan is the Great Dragon that protects her family. This is further backed up by how she's sitting at the foot of the statue before the sequence begins.
Among my favourites are: - Aristocats - Brother Bear - Lady & the Tramp & Lady & the Tramp 2 - Bambi 1 & 2 - Lion King 1 & 2 - Mulan - The Princess & The Frog - Pocahontas (it may not be historically accurate and does have its fair share of oopsies but Colours of the Wind is a bop) - Tangled - Frozen - Dinosaur - Hercules - Hunchback of Notre Dame - Maleficent (the first movie anyway) - Cruella - The dalmations sequel with the puppy... - Lilo & Stitch - Aladdin and Aladdin 3
Mulan's dog is called Little Brother because in the original legend, Mulan had a younger brother but he wasn't old enough to fight hence why Mulan went instead (after having a sword duel with her father which she won). Little Brother was designed and voiced by Chris Sanders who later direct Lilo and Stitch (and voice Stitch).
In the chinese dubs (both Mandarin and Cantonese) Li Shang is voiced by famed martial artist movie star Jackie Chan (he even sings unlike the english version where Donny Osmond sings) best known for movies like Rumble in The Bronx, Shang Hai Noon and Shang Hai Knights.
You have to understand how much artistic license was taken from the historical times that Mulan lived in the 4th or 5th Century. The Great Wall then was an packed earth wall not the wall shown their which was called the Ming Wall built from over the course of the 15th and 16th centuries CE over a thousand years later.
Mulan is a defining movie for a generation! Asking anyone I know from my age group and they have so many positive things to say about this movie. I mean, it's obviously not perfect and there are issues, but it brought something special. And several friends of mine who are women seem to especially remember it fondly. I think Mulan really set a bar in terms of a more "modern" movie in a lot of ways, and was a forerunner of upcoming changes we would see continue to be expanded upon even now..... Also it's okay, Shang is hot. :P
About the crush on animated characters...there are playlists on youtube about being in love with fictional characters, and stories on wattpad where you can read like you're a character in the story, and even asmr...so...yeah, falling in love with people who are not real is a thing... P.S: I recommend some of the playlists, they are simply great😊👍
Though the central premise of the move could be more harshly scrutinized today than when it originally released it still has many lessons to teach, music to enjoy, and IMO sits solidly within the 'golden years' of Disney. Great reaction!
What's wrong with central premise of the movie? Like a woman struggling in a sexist culture. Wanting to live in a way that's not allowed, but ultimately doing it anyway, mostly to protect her dad. Struggling at first but ultimately becoming better through hard work and training. Then ultimately being recognized and accepted. How is that a bad premise???
@@NaliTikva I should have said underlying theme not central premise, I used the wrong term. In my opinion Mulan is a feminist piece championing the masculinization of women in the west told through a story set in the east. Ironically enough, in the real world today both sides are experiencing their own crisis of gender and relationships.

Grandma Fa is voiced by late June Foray, one of the legendary voice actors who are best known for voicing a lot of the female characters of The Looney Tunes including Granny and Witch Hazel (she also voiced another Witch Hazel in the Donald Duck cartoon Trick or Treat, which is why she at first refused to voice the Looney Tunes version because she believed director Chuck Jones ripped Disney off), Magica de Spell in the original DuckTales, DuckTales Remastered and Donad Duck: Going Quackers, Rocket "Rocky" J Squirrel and Natasha Fatale in The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends, Lucifer the Cat in Cinderella, one of the mermaids in Peter Pan and Cindy Lou Who in How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the Chuck Jones cartoon), amongst others. Chuck Jones have commented on that "June Foray isn't the female Mel Blanc, Mel Blanc is the male June Foray." when it comes to her talent as a voice actor. She passed away in 2017 nearly two months before her 100:th birthday (which was a shame).

If a woman was not able to be married back then they became a burden on the family best case scenario the woman would be in charge of taking care of the parents as they aged while the more successful siblings brought wealth and acclaim to the family name. Asian cultures have a common similarity where the group is valued over the individual whether it is the family, community, or nation. Thus if a individual or small group of people needs to be screwed over so that the family, community, nation can remain stable and prosperous then it will be done. But not only will it be done they would expect said people to volunteer to be screwed over as their willing sacrifice for the group would bring the family acclaim. Everyone has a role and if one fails or brings infamy to the family enough they would be shunned and excommunicated by the community which is basically a long drawn out death sentence back then. Its basically the opposite of what people see in western culture that tends to be about personal liberation and individual freedom.
Ok so I don't want to be negative, but the dubbing of Mulan in english isn't that good IMO. I haven't watched the movie in english entirely myself, because I'm not english, but from the few moments I've listened to in this reaction it's not very great IMO, especially in comparison with the voice I'm used to (french). The biggest example to me is at 26:50. It sounds and feels both fake and bland, which is extremely sad since this is such an impactful moment. Idk in french I feel the voice is much much more impactful, and here not that much. There are other examples but I haven't written the timestamps so yeah...
I'll admit it; when I was young I used to crush on the Disney princesses all the time. I see no reason it shouldn't work the other way around. So...yeah, no style points deducted in my opinion. If you want to crush on Shang who am I to say you shouldn't? More power to you.
There's something that's not acknowledged about this time period which I think should be addressed. Yes, women were basically servants of their husbands and expected to bear children and run their homes. But men, ALL men, no matter how big or small or inclined to war they were, were the servants of their Emperor and were expected to bear arms, fight and die en masse. NOBODY was free back then. That's why Mulan's father ends up in the situation he does. His wife never had a son to replace him and his duties as a man never expired. He would most likely be among the first to die and the Empire would think nothing more of it than a battle statistic.
In real life the matchmaker doesnt exist. But its relatable to the history since in the old time asian parents like to match their kid with other kid through their parents. Dragon as a companion will be considered direspectful to chinese culture since in china dragon potrays as big, powerful and oftenly potrays the emperor not like stupid tiny lizard with weird accent. And also the hair cutting scene its just no for me, in ancient china men and woman both have long hair but styled in a different ways woman usually had like a comb and men always made a bun. Hair is precious if u cut your hair it means a mourning and a sign of disgrace toward a family. By the way for an information : disney just adapt the story from china from the legendary poem called BALLAD OF MULAN there is no dragon , love interest and etc. And if you want to see more accurate mulan story its on chinese remake of "mulan 2009 rise of a warrior" followed by the live action 2020
7:40 its a hard idea to swallow but back then, making children is extremely important because people die early and technology wasn't as advanced and there was constant war. If you aren't a member of society who is making a family, you are selfishly in your own world like today's young people who only care about fulfilling their bucket list of to dos like traveling around the world sky diving, diving, traveling, etc etc. Let me make a comparison here There are three things men stereotypically may like 1) Guns/video games 2) Cars/money 3) girls/a woman who can make them a sandwich. No fancy cooking. Just a sandwich. That's all we want. There are three things women may want (among other things) 1) go see the northern lights. 2) Paris 3) a man who is financially stable + open and nonjudgemental + a funny guy + not a douchebag + not a sexist in short, a decent human being. Now to explain: 1) men want guns to protect themselves and their family 2) men want money/cars to impress a woman so they can have a mate 3) they don't expect much from a wife as far as cooking goes, they only ask for simple things. Usually. They don't require lots of products for beauty or shoes or clothing unless they are someone with lots of money or are poor who make poor buying decisions with clothing or luxury, assuming there's no alcohol/drugs involved. Men want things that they can enjoy but also can be used to protect and provide for a woman or family. Now to explain what woman want: Everything that is material to fulfill their own desires. Nothing they want other than having a job to prove they're a 'strong woman', actually gives contribution to protecting or providing for a family or relationship, especially when women reject the traditional gender role of being a wife, mother, and caregiver. They want to be like a man, they want all the good things of being a man, and expect only the best treatment as equals (as they should be). Women don't 'have' to even prepare to be a woman because they're already naturals at being emotional and caring because its in their genes and influence in society. Women either compete with other women in education/career, or they waste their time on dates with girlfriends because 'they don't need a man'. Men on the other hand, waste their time either on a useless hobby, or a somewhat useful hobby. Unlike women, men who fail at life or make mistakes in life, are a heavier burden on society than women. Men are more likely to fall into depression and suicide than women due to the pressure and loss they have, as there's higher pressure and judgement to get a wife. Most girls would prefer the best person for them, not a loser. Guys don't care if the woman is as good or better or worse, because men are expected and taught to be better than women and many women prefer men who are richer/stronger/taller/smarter than them. That's just how it works. There's a comedian who addresses this th-cam.com/video/5oyrG3PcgLk/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/pirSM5IjosY/w-d-xo.html
Just because women don't want to be viewed as only caregivers does NOT make them selfish, there are still thousands of women who want families and there are thousands that don't, neither path is wrong and both should be respected
hey, so what's your favorite Disney movie? 😀

Mulan's dog is called Little Brother because in the original legend, Mulan had a younger brother but he wasn't old enough to fight hence why Mulan went instead (after having a sword duel with her father which she won).
Little Brother was designed and voiced by Chris Sanders who later direct Lilo and Stitch (and voice Stitch).
fun side note to 1:59 in the german version they translated Shan yu's "Perfect" into "Even better"
Haha, that’s interesting! Didn’t know that 😄
In the chinese dubs (both Mandarin and Cantonese) Li Shang is voiced by famed martial artist movie star Jackie Chan (he even sings unlike the english version where Donny Osmond sings) best known for movies like Rumble in The Bronx, Shang Hai Noon and Shang Hai Knights.
Huns where the bad guys except in one aspect. Thet saw Mulan as a soldier first Women second.
Just never watch the disgraceful 2020 version of this unforgettable masterpiece
LMAO THE SHAN YU VIDEO 😹😹 my fav Disney princess 😻
the way i just now realized that both li shang and mulan were both my sexual awakening i cant... help
I love how you are vibing to the "Let's get down to business" scene :D
"Who gave her the cricket?". Granma Fa, remember? Duh!
"Little Brother" in Chinese translates to 弟弟 (dì di) so if his name was said in Chinese it would sound cuter.
i wish we could of gotten a mulan tv series i think it had loads of potential also at one point they considered using tia carere the voice of nani from lilo and stitch as the potenial voice for mulan i like that the chose ming na wen but i can see it working
Yes, my most favorite! More respect to the Queen! She’s so cool, my favorite heroine!
Mulan was a cute dork, that’s how he fell for her, as a cute dork, same sis.
Mine too. I liked Shang. And I have a almost 3 year old niece, seems like yesterday I was holding her as a new born baby girl.
I've been searching TH-cam for some fellow underrated Commentary TH-camrs and I'm so glad I found your channel !!!! Love the video❤

@@SophieLents wow tysm!!! That is so sweet of you
I love this trope of hiding a big secret from your crush, there's so much tension 😍😍
The songs telling the story saves money from doing so, in animation. Also....pushes the story along.
OMG! Thnk u sooo much for bringing back the nostalgic feeling in me😊 it was a long time ago since i last watched this movie so i can barely remember..n this will help me regain my memory of it. Also that editing with the dolphin sound effect....PERFECT! I have to mention this again, ur editings were TOP NOTCH!😙👌 U ALWAYS have a HUGE surprises for us n i LOVE it! Thank you so much!
I do love that movie far more than the real live version of mulan in my opinion gorgeous sophie lents
4:47 I'm gonna have dreams about this part right here. So good hahaha
I've always had a suspicion that Shang is bisexual. How upset he was after discovering Mulan is a woman. Shang and David are my Disney crush
I find it funny I never got the adult joke in this movie when I first saw it. Mulan's name she chose when pretending to be a man is Fa Ping 🤣.
That's... not an adult joke. This came out in 1998. The internet hadn't invented that word yet.
The times they lived in, this is what they were taught: there was no such thing as feminism back then. One of the many reasons I would not have fit in before women started to be allowed to wear pants. I hate skirts and dresses
I discovered you today, I'm so happy that I did!! ❤️
Welcome to the channel ❤️
Sophie Lents: 12:48 "Is it weard, like, crushing on animated characters?"
Degenerat Weebs: Is our entire civilization joke to you?
You sing like you've seen it hundred times but react like you saw it for the first time. :D
tangled is soooo amazing :) i hope you react to the divergent series it’s sooo good! do you know what you’re planning on reacting to next? great reaction as always!!!
I’ll probably do the maze runner series next cause a lot of people wanted me to do it next but after that I’m almost sure I’ll be doing divergent!
"Is it weird to crush on animated characters?"
First time?
I’ve been on an old Disney music kick lately and all these song have little lines that you don’t hear as a kid or because it’s going to fast but yea it’s really funny to me how adult these songs can be 😂😂
One of the best Disney Movies of all time, I'm with you.
BTW you REALLY should do a reaction (blind if possible) of Raya an the last dragon, because this movie is one of the best in the newer time and since I see our taste are really similiar, I think you will be going to LOVE Raya.
Best wishes and please continue making those funny and entertaining videos of yours!
Oh and also: I've been there too, having a crush on animated characters. Chang was one of them too, so I totally get you. xD One of the best 'Disney Princes' out there. I think I had a thing for Prince Eric as well, now that I think about it. XD Before moving on to some Anime Characters and finally arriving on 'real life' persons like Aragorn from Lord of the Rings. xD
Feminist nightmare yes, completely accurate to the cultural norms of this era of China? Indefinitely
The grandma is so hilarious
Honestly, I think Mulan took after her
Was that the Thomas’s the train theme you stuck in there??? 😂 😂 😂
As described by another youtuber, "Bisexual legend Li Shang". 😅
Exactly 😂
Not my Alexa actually playing despacito💀she's only supposed to respond to my voice🤣
You made my day with this video, this was awesome 🤣😂
Thanks! I’m glad you liked it ☺️

Aaaaaand it happened again
greatest training montage
The live action is my favourite movie in the univers
My best song of the movie at 15:28
25 years today!
And this movie has a great lesson that women can go to army too
I don’t care what anyone says; Shun-Yu is one of the most badass villains in Disney history.
12:49 it depends on how far you take it. I'd say some mild swooning is fine, but when you make them the background for you phone, laptop, and PC, hang posters up all around your room, and buy wifu pillows that I say you should probably see a therapist.
best intro everrrrr
22:39 Scar died at the end of his battle with Simba from Lion King at the hands of his own hyena henchmen
that's true!
I'll admit it; when I was young I used to crush on the Disney princesses all the time. I see no reason it shouldn't work the other way around. So...yeah, no style points deducted in my opinion. If you want to crush on Shang who am I to say you shouldn't? More power to you.
I would have let her drink the cricket
You just made my house play despacito
Yo i paused at 27:05 and can't stop laughing now.
😂😂
There's something that's not acknowledged about this time period which I think should be addressed. Yes, women were basically servants of their husbands and expected to bear children and run their homes. But men, ALL men, no matter how big or small or inclined to war they were, were the servants of their Emperor and were expected to bear arms, fight and die en masse.
NOBODY was free back then. That's why Mulan's father ends up in the situation he does. His wife never had a son to replace him and his duties as a man never expired. He would most likely be among the first to die and the Empire would think nothing more of it than a battle statistic.
Sophie my friend the country's filming location was China.
12:55 hey hey no worries girly you should talk with anime or fans that are also in your shoes they love fictional characters (sassy mhmm)
Thank you so much for the clarification!
Shang is the biggest bi icon of animations
I didn't like the live action Mulan either, I liked the live action Aladdin, Lion King, and Beauty and The Beast.
Sophie, I don't know who I crush more, you or Mulan. Also, when can we do karaoke together ❤️
react to mean girls next !! (p.s. ilysm and you’re hairstyle’s so cute omg)
Thank you so much! I’m doing the maze runner series next but I’ll definitely react to mean girls in the future ☺️
omg yes, maze runner is like my second favorite teen sci-fi series ever, next to hunger games of course, but anyways, that’s fetch girl !! 💗✨
What a sweet cat you have 🙀
Love brother bear and love this movie
Do you have video on descendants?
Can you watch the 2021 Mulan so your childhood can ruin like ours is lol!
Let me make a comparison here
There are three things men stereotypically may like
1) Guns/video games
2) Cars/money
3) girls/a woman who can make them a sandwich. No fancy cooking. Just a sandwich. That's all we want.
There are three things women may want (among other things)
1) go see the northern lights.
2) Paris
3) a man who is financially stable + open and nonjudgemental + a funny guy + not a douchebag + not a sexist
in short, a decent human being.
Now to explain:
1) men want guns to protect themselves and their family
2) men want money/cars to impress a woman so they can have a mate
3) they don't expect much from a wife as far as cooking goes, they only ask for simple things.
Now to explain what woman want:
Everything that is material to fulfill their own desires.
There's a comedian who addresses this
th-cam.com/video/5oyrG3PcgLk/w-d-xo.html
th-cam.com/video/pirSM5IjosY/w-d-xo.html
Just because women don't want to be viewed as only caregivers does NOT make them selfish, there are still thousands of women who want families and there are thousands that don't, neither path is wrong and both should be respected
My favourite Disney movie is Pocahontas
atlantis is my favorite
