Bought a competition package e46 M3 as my first car for about $22,000. Now it’s worth probably closer to 30 or maybe even 40. It’s a interlagos blue one as well so very very rare.

I purchased one in March 2019 and it was round the time when they went quite cheap lol. I didnt know much about em payed few grand extra from dealer I'm so glad been watching lots of content on how these e46 m3 are going up in value and they genuinely are! I have seen all the cheap cars for sale near me in UK they have all be sold broken and had major faults. Slowly all the bad m3s will be no longer on the road and our good ones will shoot up in value!!!!

I agree, however what I did about 4 years ago is bought a interlagos blue comp. with 90 or so thousand miles, currently has 100,000 and the pump went out about a year or so ago on the smg transmission. So I manual swapped it and sure it won’t be a factory manual but should sell for around the same price. Also the transmissions with smg pumps the synchros don’t have as much wear. But I definitely wouldn’t be turned off by a smg car if it was less and with less miles...the smg was actually really fun to drive completely different than the manual experience....way more drama which was fun on the high way and back roads. Honestly miss the smg....but love the manual 😂

Yes, this is the greatest car ever. However, maintenance and repairs are about $2-4,000 a year, depending on how much of the work you do yourself. Get one with a 6MT that's been taken care of. They all have the same problems over their life (VANOS, SMG, rod bearings, subframe), about $15-20,000 in repairs over the course of its life. They are the best handling cars ever, though.

true, I bought mine at 100k miles at 15k USD 4yrs ago, it has 160k now and w/ subframe, vanos and rod bearings done the value is still at 15k (the actual highest offer I got is 16k, on average 15k). thats 60k more miles on my Mystic Blue Metallic car, and its modified too (wheels, CSL trunk and CSL Bumper, and suspension and catless headers.. just bolt ons nothing fancy). I can imagine a fully stock car at around 100k miles will be going for a lot now (I see them as low as 18k but questionable maintenance history).
Luckily the first two owners of my car kept a record of maintenance, quite a thick folder lol and it just got thicker on my ownership.

Got a 05 M3 ZCP so rod bearing issue is not such a big worry as pre 05 models . Interlago blue was not my first choice but took time to like some thing new. Definitely did my PPI list with a mechanic. Slight Downside is I got a SMG with a very long 1st gear if in Drive which needs a lot of gas pedaling, so I instead drive in manual to. The ticking vanos and subframe are major things to be attentive too. Last, I would not count yet on it going up in value until it happens. For now , buy the car because you like it driving it. Not for the sales talk.

I've been shopping for my 2nd E46 M3 for the last 6 months (nationwide), and the market is cluttered with silver and carbon black exterior M3s. Those are dime a dozen. Look for more rare combos, like alpine white with red or cinnamon interior. Laguna Seca Blue are super rare also. If you can get your hands on a ZCP, do it. This is a car to drive, not put away to flip.

unfortunately you probably did buy it wrong, but they are old cars and that can happen to any of us, no matter how much homework we do. It's a shame you had to rebuild the engine right after you bought it but it sounds like your M3 is now ready to go and enjoy for many years to come. Unfortunately if you sell now, its still probably only worth $15-16k. I would keep it, the longer you have it the better chance you could sell it for $26k in a few years. When something catastrophic happens, you have two choices, cut it lose to the mechanic for $10k or spend the money like you did and enjoy it. Drive the heck out of it and don't save it for the next guy. The M2 is a great choice but they are still depreciating. At some point both cars will be worth $26k and that's when you sell and switch over. Congrats on your M3 !

Caesar Guzman definitely OE. The OE radiator is very robust unlike the e36 cooling system, the e46 cooling is pretty solid. I know plenty of guys who track on a fresh OEM radiator and water pump and they do just fine.

    I had an 03 pheonix yellow(smg), 04 titanium silver(smg) and 04 estoril blue vert(6spd)
Rule number one* Stay away from smg. I found say a 6spd coupe is pretty much the way to go, having said that the getrag manual transmissions are pretty notchy and don't like to be driven in cold. From my experience the E46 M3 is overhyped, I now have E90 M3 and it's leap ahead of the E46

  • @samwisee

Glenn is right, they don't make cars like this anymore (and they never will again for anything that cost less than 100k). It's not the fastest car by today's standard, but it is plenty quick enough and the way the power, the noise and speed builds from 5500 rpm to red line is intoxicating. I'm calling this out specifically because while there are lots of great things about the E46m3, I think it's this engine characteristics that makes this car so desirable for so many car enthusiast. This engine not only defines the performance characteristics of this car, but also represents an entire generation of high performance cars from a bygone era that we probably will never see anymore.
What you get when you buy an E46 M3 (and why everyone loves them) is you get one of the most engaging and fun car money can buy at any price. In the sub $50k price range, there are almost no cars out there that will check all these boxes: 1) High revving, high output N/A engine, 2) manual transmission, 3) RWD 4) Engaging Steering, 5) Great handling dynamics. Off the top of my head you have the S2000, which is probably a more engaging / visceral car but is slower (especially the AP1s); and the E9x M3, which is faster but is heavier and doesn't have as nice of a steering feel as the E46. That's literally it. The 996 911 of the same era should be on this list as well and IMO is currently THE performance bargain right now because it is so maligned by the Porsche community. But the thing is, I'd rather have the E46M3 than any 996 non-turbo or GT cars. IMO it is arguably a worse car than the E46 M3, and certainly the interior of the 996 have aged far worse than the E46s.
Anything else should be on that list? 1st Gen Porsche Cayman S?
Prices for good condition, (relatively) unmodified ones has been going up, but I think BMW made way too many of these for prices to raise super quickly. What I'm seeing now is a little bit like what's going on with all the Porsche GT cars. Low (

I test drove one and I can say it felt heavy and sluggish and this car was immaculately maintained. Would I pay anymore than £10000 for a manual m3 absolutely not.
My opinion is that it felt disconnected from steering felt like you’d turn a little an nothing would happen for a bit.
Maybe I didn’t drive it right but I got back into my 5 series e60 and it felt much better

Ameer Khan picked one up at 150k for 14k with extensive lists of modifications, everything that could go wrong has been replaced and upgraded .. pre purchase inspection summed up the car is basically brand new with all the reinforcements - with a couple bells and whistles as well .. csl carbon fiber trunk , bumper , whole interior decked out with carbon fiber .. csl airbox with the tune .. perfect exhaust system installed as well catless agency power headers with the agency power exhaust makes the perfect sound .. will still be fun to maintain the car regularly but she’s a beauty I am thrilled with it .. I tell anyone don’t let high Milage cars scare you away!!! These cars are known for having meticulous owners who cared for them properly just have to get lucky and find the right one when the time is right

I'm getting my oem M3 mirrors this week, just got my differential rebuild last week, and my Vaders in the car last month. Pretty good evolution lately 💪🏼

The high mileage E46 M3’s will continue to be affordable. Only the low mileage ones are going up in value, but they’ve been doing that for a few years now, so this video isn’t really applicable to what you’ve said regarding the current values.
I bought my 2003.5 manual coupe with 97k miles, for $19k 8 years ago. A same color/tear/mileage/specs one today, sells for around $17-18k. So prices have stayed relatively the same for a while now, but like I said, it’s the low mileage bones that are getting pricey now, not the higher mileage ones.

I’ve been looking for a 4 seat car for a while. You are so right about condition, not mileage. The condition of the typical E46 M3 is terrible. The E90/2 is not as nimble but a better value for money. A good one is at least $20k+ as you said. I’ve driven about 5 E9x cars $20k to $25k and they are all in great condition.
If I didn’t need a back seat I think the S54 bargain is the Z4M roadster which is like $15k to $25k. These are more likely to be second cars for rich guys and better maintained than E46. I think the Z4M is the better car in terms of wheelbase, chassis, steering, brakes, sitting position, and interior quality. The E46 has a back seat.

    • @topproff2558
      @topproff2558 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes they rev to 8000rpm but being N/A you have to wait half an hour to get up there, while a smart car darts past you because it has more bottom end torque. There’s a reason nobody bothers with N/A and that’s because it’s prehistoric, inefficient and bloody dull

@@curtislovrak5390 That was not my point, I never mentioned anything about reliability, also if you got it at 180k I am sure everything was sorted out otherwise it would not have made it there. My point is this is not a car to flip to make money, it is idiotic to think you will make a profit on this. If you bought one 5 years ago and have a super clean low mile one maybe you can. The window on making a profit on this is long gone.
