Thanks so much for the interview. I’ve been a magnum fan since 1980 and they are the band I have seen the most. First time at Leeds Poly in 1985. Last booked gig was in Edinburgh a few years ago which was sadly cancelled when the tour bus broke down. Most of my favourite groups haven’t written any new stuff for 20 odd years - but kudos to Magnum for churning out consistently awesome songs year after year! 🍺🍺🍺🍺
That Tony has health problems can only be regretted, and I think they make sense to cancel the tour. But what many fans have closed their eyes to in the last 5 years is that Bob's voice simply has no power, strength and energy left. Also, all albums since 2016 have sounded very similar. No songs that stand out, but just a lot of tried and tested porridge that they spit out. Then, what's left of Magnum? Yes, it's just Tony and Bob. Whichever album comes to mind, the latest album worth listening to is Escape From The Shadow Garden, and even there Bob's voice sounds very bad, he can no longer take higher notes. I will remember Magnum during their classic period, i.e. from 1985 until 1994. At the comeback in 2023, however, is Brand New Morning, and not least Princess Alice, where Bob had his peak vocally and Tony wrote only good songs. Then together with Stanway and Jimmy Coppley. The biggest bracket has been Al Barrow, who didn't add anything new to the band, and managed to make the ugliest cover with Breath Of Life. Magnum would have been much better off keeping Barker, Stanway and Lowe....it's the REAL Magnum...at least to me.
