This film should have been DDL's fourth Oscar. He overshadowed Leo Dicaprio and anyone else in every scene.
Brody deserved to win that year. I was honestly surprised they put DDL in the best actor category.....I think he should have been in the best supporting actor category and should have won that.

yeah, DiCaprio is solid but DDL has way way more charisma. The scenes without him in this film weren't interesting
DDL is such a gentle and soft spoken man . Hard to believe that he can play psychotic , ruthless and violent characters such as Bill The Butcher or Daniel Plainview.
He's such a humble man. There's always like a lesson even with small talk.

There was so much character and color bubbling under Daniel's surface, it looked like he was about to burst into laughter or start crying at any moment. He's so attentive, he has the look of a man who's learned not to miss what's important.

People try saying DeNiro or Brando or Oldman are better, which they definitely are great actors, they’re on my Mt Rushmore of acting. But DDL outshines all of them, he delivers performances that truly stay with you. Best there ever was hands down.
Acting comes so natural to Day Lewis and he's so forensic about it. You can tell he wouldn't know how to answer someone if they asked him the question what should they do to become a great actor. He's so naturally gifted and focused on craft that he just doesn't know how not to be great.
I loved him in the last of the Mohicans.He was so good.

Daniel is much more than a phenomena he’s something else. Any character he takes on just comes alive.

Man what a Legend DDL. Look at him here and then in the movies he's a total different person for every role he has payed...
First movie I saw him in was A Room with a View. He embodied the character as he does in every film.
He definitely doesn't take anything for granted when it comes to a character he portrays. So many actors are either not compelled to, or are uninterested in, pushing the limits of their craft like Daniel Day-Lewis.

We are witnessing greatness. Gangs was a good movie but let’s be honest it wouldn’t have been 1/3 as good w out DDL as Bill the Butcher. He is an absolute force of nature.

DDL is hands down the greatest actor of all time
Fascinating how Lewis stares at Scorsese when he answers Rose’s questions. At first I thought it was purely shyness around Rose, but I wonder if he’s really looking at Scorsese for approval of the insights he’s giving. It’s almost like he inhabits a character so completely that once he’s done with that character he can’t even remember playing him.

I am so glad that DeNiro didn't want to do the part because he would not have pulled it off nearly as well as Lewis did
No matter how many times I have seen this movie, I am amazed at the acting ability of Daniel. I just sit and watch him amazed at the talent that pours from him. He stole the show. He is the one who stood out. He is such a gentle soul and to be able to pull the character of Bill the Butcher from within. He throws himself into the character he plays. It is a shame that he is not making any more movies..

DDL is that one performer who is outrageously multifaceted and It's not until you look at his entire body of work that you realize how diverse a performer he is.
He was stunning in Lincoln, My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood.
He was brilliant in Age of Innocence, In The Name of The Father and The Boxer.
The totality of the roles he's played collectively is nothing less than spectacular. His talent is unparalleled and in my opinion, he's one of the greatest and most powerful actors who ever performed.
Hell, if they made a movie about my life, DDL would play me better than I could...

DDL played one of the most complex, convincing villains in film history. Brilliant in every scene.
Everybody in this movie was outstanding, but DDL stood head and shoulders above everybody. Looking and listening to him in this interview and thinking about him as Bill is so far apart. The testament to great acting.

He goes all in when he's in a movie,imagine being married to someone who changes so fully for an entire length of a movie shoot. DDL goes out,Bill the Butcher comes home. I wager his decision to retire comes from the full mental commitment he gives,he never phoned it in. Whatever he does for the rest of his life I hope he's happy.

Martin wasn't wrong when he said he thinks Daniel has a rage inside of him. Sometimes you can see it behind his eyes, almost murderous, which he managed to tap into for the film. Daniel is one the best actors ever lived, but he must have some rage inside of him for real to capture it so well when acting.
No one can bring a character to life like DDL can, greatest actor to ever do it!

I can really understand someone like Daniel Day Lewis’s caution around rolls that require so much rage, just from my reaction to watching intense movies. Without realizing or intending, I take on the mannerisms of key characters in the great movies I watch, for several hours after watching it. It’s mild, but enough for my wife and former girlfriends to have mentioned it. I can’t imagine the effect and duration it would have on me if I immersed myself in becoming a character, for months. Especially when you have to come to some understanding of intense violence and anger and other destructive elements. It must be incredibly traumatic.

At one time I saw Scorsese say very proudly "I'm a American film maker. I tell stories". That really bothered me. I thought he was provincial and American movies to exclusion of others are superior. More recently I saw him say that he admired Italian and Polish cinema. That weight finally dissapaited. Legendary director with list of classic movies. Thanks from my heart Martin.

I live in Ireland and I used to live just down the road from Daniel Day Lewis. Then I moved to Cork for work at MSD the Pharma company and bought a house with a view of the sea and a castle. Jeremy Irons lives in the Castle and I see him in the village all the time. So random hahaha!

I imagine he has an intensity to him naturally even when he is being his everyday self. As a method actor he must have some deep intensity he draws from.
If someone watched this and didn't know DDL played Bill the Butcher, they'd find it hard to connect this person to the character. Props to Daniel, one of the truly great actors, ever!!

in some parts Scorcese looks at Daniel in a strange way like scared (scared is not the best word for It) lol but I think it was the memories on set

sorry I had to rush with this comment 13 minutes into the interview, but I felt the urge to share how much in awe I am of DDL's genuineness which adds to his charisma, considering how diverse he can be upon entering a character, whoever it may be

I have never given Daniel Day Lewis in my personal persona the acting credit this man deserves. I don’t even believe Hollywood (these people) have given Him the credit he deserves. I’m sure he has been compensated well for his work. But, unlike other actors, he doesn’t act, he literally becomes the character .....................if you are watching for more than just temporary entertainment, how often do you recognize these professional characteristics?
One of my favorite movies! Such a great story, casting, a literal masterpiece IMO. Love it! DDL was the best part.
DDL hates discussing his process of getting into a role, he’s just a humble artist. But it sucks for me cuz I wanna learn the from the best, EVERYTHING that goes into him bringing a character to life from the page. I wanna know his entire process as a method actor. I would love to be his assistant or something so I could watch him prepare.

To me, it seems like he is too close to the "thing" to ever be able to articulate it. He just manifests his gift; it's pure, and who he is, completely. It's not surprising he has a hard time explaining what it is or how he does it.

@@cptblackdesk6505 It's a grey area, young man...life. It's important not to do wrong. Weinstein clearly did wrong. But when you cross over to judge other people too much and on a constant basis, you might forget to judge yourself during the commotion.
Notice how at the 10:14 mark when Daniel is asked what he was doing for those 5 years, there's almost 20 seconds of what seems like awkward time where Scorsese seems to know something and clearly Daniel won't disclose what he did for those 5 years. I found that interesting, not sure it was a case of what he was doing, more like a case of where he went for those 5 years.
Everyone who loves him, make sure you see him in “My Left Foot”. Mind blowing.

Daniel Day Lewis. The embodiment of an actor, and as far from a superstar in his attitude and demeanor as it is possible to be. Humble yet brilliant. Never let the success go to his head. Always kept his perspective. Where "stars" phone in their performances and bask in fame, he is the complete opposite.

What I felt was, Daniel played the character very authentic. He could put his skin on and feel his feelings on that time.
You need to understand, how the character felt, what moved him to smile , lough, scream, love or hate. And Daniel did feel him.

Martin Scorsese has made true masterpieces! Taxi Driver, Goodefellas and Killers of the Flower Moon are my favorites. Gangs of New York, is a pretty good film. I read somewhere, that the studio put a lot of pressure on him and that resulted in negative effects.

He is such a natural actor, he can't even use words to describe what he is doing, if he were a math genius and solving complex problems all the time, and some teacher was all like "show ur werkz or u get an F" he would be all like "ah, jeez, well you ask such a question of me, what do i even say? how do i write down the quantum infinity of my mind on a single piece of paper? your asking a difficult thing of me, I just do math, thats it--'"
He does the same thing with acting, he can't (or wont) explain his methods, because i think they are so deep inside of him that it would be the equivalent of asking someone exactly what going in to their method of walking, or eating.....most people would say "well i put one foot in front of the other, and place food in to my mouth and chew....what do you want?"
either that or he made a pact with a Faerie and his contract doesn't allow him to explain things.....any things XD

better yet, he made the pact with the Faerie and it was like "i want to be a great craftsman" and he got that but the contract made it so he couldn't explain anything to anyone, only act it out....so in acting things out all the time he became a great actor, but he just wants to go and make a dove-tail box and a pair of shoes to go in the box, and movies are just the thing he does to get more wood and shoe-making money.

Obviously I’m no DDL but this reminds me of the school system and how it kinda caused me to give up on learning what they taught.
Thank God they didn’t have Deniro play that part...he’s a great actor but I really don’t think he could have brought that character to life like Daniel Day Lewis did. He was meant to play that role...I just can’t picture anyone else doing it.

Why would you even think of De Niro? Just cause he's Scorsese's friend. Come on, we know, both Scorsese and De Niro are better than that, and won't just work in a movie for the sake of friendship
@@AA-sn9lz because Scorsese himself had DeNiro in mind for the role, since way back in the late 70's when he first began thinking and planning on making a movie about this. Had he made it all those years ago, DeNiro might have indeed been the best possible choice for the role of Bill. But since he didn't, and because it didn't end up seeing the light of day until when it finally did, I think Daniel was certainly the right man for the job, in the time it was made. Pretty hard to argue otherwise Anyway...
I disagree. I think that DeNiro would have been amazing in that roll. Just because we didnt see him play it , doesnt mean that he wouldnt have been good.

You can't tell me that he would have had the edge over D.D.L in the time it was made. Now if we were talking about a Mean Streets or Taxi Driver era Bobby, well then by all means, definitely... But for the love of God, the role and character of Bill The Butcher could not have been better portrayed by an "Analyze That" Robert DeNiro! Let's be sensible here...

A lot of problems with the film, Dicaprio was fine though.
you just know Charlie is grilling Daniel about working after GONW for Martin's sake only. Charlie knows Martin wants to use Daniel in his future films and Marty probably has either avoided talking to Daniel about his future plans or already has and Daniel is non-committal.
