It feels so weird hearing Daniel talk about his son and family spontaneously like that, with him being so private about his life, it feels like a gift when he opens up a little.
I think he is a VERY shy man
He's a massive alcoholic, like Liam Neeson, so he is necessarily private. He isnt a very together guy. Great actor though.

She told me that my grandfather moved
To Calif at that time period to work in those oil fields for Standard Oil. When
I found out I was able to watch it again
And it was such another look at my family history.He did a wonderful job.

I think the interviewer is wrong in a few hypothesis and assumptions, which would put off DDL and PTA. They do have a slight moment of silence and hesitation sometimes, which is telling.
The guy is just on another level when it comes to acting so these questions are way too simple.
he doesn't like talking about his process. Fair enough. It's like a magician telling you how they do their trick.
I think it's the opposite of this - a large part of his process is unconscious, not deliberate, thought out choices - if a magician worked this way his show would be a distaster.

I have followed this magnificent man since My left foot. , He is mesmerizing in everything he does .. i have literally seen The he Last of the Mohicans at least 100 times! A brilliant method actor that makes the Cartier comes to life is incredible . I just have too say how much I respect this beautiful man 🦅

You get an hour with easily the best male actor of our lifetime along with one of the best writers/directions and one of your questions was "Were you chewing in the scenes"? You could tell by Daniel's body language that these are not intriguing questions and rightfully so.
I swear @28:14, I was thinking the EXACT SAME THING about "Detuned Quartet", I've been listening to it alot and the other night, I could of sworn that I kept hearing that song, and that was before I saw this interview. That is so insane that that was what he was going for, he really nailed it. True genius.

If I was a professional actor, that is the kind of actor I would want to be and work with. If I was, and I could choose what actor, of any actor out there, to be in a film with, it would be Daniel Day Lewis. If not, then actors like that. That will go all out. It is so stunning every time, I see him the way he really is, compared to the people he becomes in movies. Even the ones that might be closest to at least the way he talks, like in age of innocence or the boxer. They are still very different.

Plain and simple; he wants no one else but himself to win.
Its more complex than that. He seemed pretty content at the end of the movie that Paul had his own Oil production and was making a decent living for himself. His contempt for both his son and Eli is more complicated in my opinion
@@NickBigsmoke Paul is someone like Daniel. Paul did what was necessary for him to earn money and become successful. So did Plainview. So in a sense, Plainview and Paul are similar. And Plainview knows he made Paul. He gave him the chance to become successful.
But Eli and H.W were not Like Daniel. H.W was raised by a wealthy man. He merely had anything to worry about in his Childhood. He was in good hands. And Eli was a fraud. He used his cheap tricks to influence poor people into believing in his false gimmicks. So clearly, Daniel believes these two are lesser Than him.
PS: I keep seeing people say she's a movie critic. She is NOT a movie critic, she's a college professor. I've seen a million interviews with Daniel Day Lewis, I've never seen him so miserable! He's usually very friendly and engaging. Here, it gets so that he can't even look her in the eye, and he seems to get exhausted and exasperated. I guess we're forced to watch the Charlie Rose interview with these two, if we want a substantive interview about "TWBB"
The questions seemed pretty good, she was kind of annoying in the same way ALL interviewers of celebrity are. He was never really a theatre actor I don't think so its likely that he or Paul aren't comfortable in front of a crowd.

Sadly I always find too many interviewers go to 'interview school' and learn a very particular way of asking questions. Anyway, I didn't think she was 'too' bad, or them either.

I don’t think that’s down to him being particularly shy or anxious about talking in front of people and crowds, (I could be wrong of course) but I think his nervous energy comes from the questions and interviewer themselves. He doesn’t like talking about his process, he’s very careful on how he talks about it and what words to use. He’s often been flakey about questions surrounding his process in character work because he claims that he can never find the words to explain it. He also really doesn’t like or answer questions about his personal life. He is very guarded about all of that and so I feel he brings a trepidatious energy to these interviews. The proof of all of this is in how few and far between he did them. It may also be the fact he doesn’t like speaking in front of crowds of course. We will never truly know.
Check his interview with Oprah, there he is very open, relaxed and happy.

This was worth it to hear Daniel Day Lewis's Giant story
british humor at its wryest
The thing people might misunderstand about that kind of intense, all consuming acting, is you don't really need to have any back story. I get the impression they didn't "need" to talk about any of that too much, because it really comes down to the imagination. And the script. The script created the world they went into. In real life, people may act a certain way, treat people a certain way, without really knowing or remembering why they became the person they are. There was a certain point in the movie, when Daniel plainview thought he could have an actual relationship with his brother, it seemed like he might be able to grow as a person. But as things worked out, or if they didn't work out, he tended to go even further into his insecurities, which in his case, made him blindly dangerous. By the end of it, he was apparently beyond any point of self realization.
That breakfast talk is making me wonder if breakfasts are such a huge deal in the Day-Lewis household and that's why they're a big deal in Phantom Thread.
I mean the process must be pretty much him just loving to think about every little detail about a character, everything from the voice, gestures, thinking of how you would like the character to react, trying it out by yourself, recording snippets etc. I imagine he engrosses himself in it, like candy for his imagination.
Those first couple of questions are horrific, especially the second. Did you even WATCH the movie?!
Plainview is driven by a desire to rise above and get away from other people which struggles with a sense of fundamental isolation. He is what he is and he does not understand why he is not satisified. But this is the competition he has in him. This is his unwillingness to see others succeed. It is not enough for him to win the outer struggle to succeed. He needs them to loose and know it. But the remnants of his humanity is grating against that which comes out in his failed relationship with his son. So business becomes his religion and that which structures his life and provides him with a concrete goal and a way to express his distaste for humanity.

I can't imagine delving mentally so deep into a character. The effects on the psychy have to leave some imprint that never leaves. I would be afraid of being lost in it.
As much as I love this man as an actor and a humanitarian I wonder what it’s like being married to a man who becomes another person without breaking character. For instance, the butcher in Gangs of NY.
That's what I've always thought he goes home like that man, even Daniel said when he won a Oscar he said and to my wife have to deal with multiple people at home lol

Adorable, huh??? One of the most endearing things about DDL is the way every one of his characters-even the darker ones-touch someone in the scene with compassion. The way he strokes H.W.’s face and kisses him seems like a bit of a window into DDL as a father in real life. Never mind the shooting and clubbing and knife throwing...DDL always comes across to me as SUCH a giving soul.

I feel like you can put together a few things from his backstory just by watching the film closely. I think he had a possibly abusive father (or someone physically abusive in his life), I believe his mom left or passed away at some point early on. They don't explain where his greed or competition comes from, but I'd say it's likely a manifestation of the anger at his dad and the hurt of missing his mom.
I think you're bang on the money bud. Any of the times he loses his shit it's when he feels abandoned so it's very likely he had an absentee father or dare I postulate was even adopted or orphaned himself. It's interesting how he defends and seems to like Mary Sunday but then again it's also a power play against the father. People always say how evil or "psychotic" the character is when he clearly isn't he cries multiple times, when sending HW away, when he reads his fake brothers diary, definitely not psychopath behavior. It's just a lot more complicated than I think critics boiled it down to which is part of why it's such a fascinatingly layered story, and a very tragic one.
As for the greed I wrestle with this theme myself because he doesn't seem like a cheapskate but he does seem to think it can fill the void. Part of me feels like it was more about the drive and the megalomaniacal pursuit of power, rather than the physical aspects of just owning things or having money. Like he feels so barren and incomplete inside, he is highly suspect of people so refuses to be vulnerable which pushes them away and makes this weird self fulfilling prophecy for him of how people are just wasted carbon.

pretty much - he's a character who started out life with plenty of reason to be hateful and malicious and then the story walks us through each little moment that just continued to pile on until he succumbs to his own personal hell when he reaches the culmination of all of his life's ambition...... "i'm finished" that last line really nails it.

Can someone really tell why they are the way they are? No one knows for sure, the interviewer wanted a flash back to show Daniel parents beating him as a child to explain why he is like that in the movie. The characters that Paul created here aren't that simple. The dude killed his brother and his priest! If thats not info about the psychology of your character I dont know what is!

its amazing the almost torture Daniel puts himself through to acquire a character then someone like Anthony Hopkins just learns the lines and trusts his acting technique. Both are utterly convincing yet have polar opposite ways of approaching their work
DDL is way better than Hopkins though.
You never know what is going to come out of DDLs mouth. His responses are surprising and very complex
DDL's closing statement is excellent although it doesn't apply to every type of actor. It does, however, apply to serious actors.
