I think the reason why Araki doesn't like bringing in old characters for new roles is because there's objectively more potential in an entirely new character. It also allows more creative freedom in general, which is something i think a lot of creative people would prefer having.
I agree. And even though I love Jotaro Kujo, even his returns in DIU, early GW and SO felt a bit like publisher concessions. Araki strikes me as someone who always wants to do something new rather than be held captive by even his past successes.
Yeah, I can agree too. Sometimes you explored as much of a character as you wished to do, plus in cases these retread an old character’s archetype in a new character, it might be to improve upon the shortcomings.
Hot take, while Ermes Costello was very similar to Jean-Pierre Polnareff, she’s a refined version.
It really stretched the creative bone when you have to work with what you've got aswell

3:08 I personally feel like even Part 3 Did can be completely excluded from that list. While surely he does only appear very very lately in the part, we still know him and his character fairly well from Part 1. And he technically didn't change that drastically between the parts to an extent where Dio Brando and DIO are two entirely separate entities. With Diavolo I do agree tho, probably the most underwhelming villain in the entire franchise, which mainly comes from the fact that we see him like three episodes in total

It is truly one of the biggest downsides of Jojo as a whole - it is *_CRIMINALLY UNDERUTILIZED_* as a franchise to make more content and media out of.... there's quite literally *_NOTHING_* properly *_new modern day media_* outside of the manga and anime for Jojo to get into, and it's really frustrating with how rich and fascinating the universe and the world-building is

Really? What more justification does an author need than "It's not what I want to do with my story"? The point of jojo is that the torch gets passed, I'm glad araki doesn't reiterate past characters to an excessive degree

Cause it feels odd to have this interconnected world and spend so long watching these characters develop and grow only to suddenly just be treated like they dont exist. Especially when theres these little tidbits of characters reappearing in the next series to then be turned into a oneshot side character. It just feels unsatisfying

Even though it wasn’t written by Araki himself it should get an animated adaptation. Fugo gets his redemption arc and it introduces new characters and references old ones. It focuses on the narcotics team that was responsible for spreading drugs across Italy and the reason Giorno joined Passione to put an end to.
4:18- I agree. Instead of making them an obstacle with one quirk that makes them memorable explore their past to show how sympathetic and/or truly rotten their ideology is to better understand them as the opposite of the hero by showing outside of being associated with the heroes, how they react to others and how they deal with problems personally.
Even the best make mistakes, and since hirohiko is THE best he makes a lot of mistakes in his manga
Something I really hate and I realized while reading the Wonder of you Pursuit arc is how there's no social or legal impact in the show for anything, like they would beat somebody or shoot someone in front of a group of people or even cops and 2 scenes later they're walking normal like nothing happened, nobody cares. In the Wonder of you arc they got arrested for like 3 panels I think and then nothing, cops forgot like GTA cops. I understand that it would be stupid for the story to be hiding from cops all the time and that way we focus only on what matters but it feels so stupid at the same time that there are no rules. I'm not a huge fan of One Piece but I gotta say at least they do that way better than JoJo
What do you mean? In the Wonder of u the only time they do something criminal in públic is at the start of it, and then they get arrested, josuke is extremelly harmed so they have to send him to the hospital, he stays in the hospital for the entire Arc so there's no reason for them to look for him.

I thought about the idea of a Steel Ball Run game that progresses like Supergiant’s Pyre, where failing a leg doesn’t mean a game over, in this case only death does. And the player character can input a personality test to determine a Stand also 7th Stand User, but getting to encounter a corpse part isn’t guaranteed. You can learn the Spin to make up for awaiting finding a Stand as a reliable basis. And the player can get involved in canon encounters if the date and location line up, but the whereabouts aren’t explicitly told, only the stage checkpoints are pinned on the map.
Also, yes, beating Diego and the other racers is possible, but should be a big challenge to plan over the course of a game.
The game can have a survival/sports tag, might be the most unique tag an anime game could have.

3:37- that's what I agree with as well- DIO has all the prep time in the entire part- yet still gets flabbergasted and outwitted with his defeat despite the thrilling fight being very undignified. Perhaps DIO shows up in the mid-part of the story, but has to leave- with the remaining story getting payback.
As for Diavolo- instead of Rolling Stones, do a sudden Araki ex Machina where he somehow gets the Arrow, leading to a proper final battle, maybe Mista is killed because Diavolo shenanigans involving the number 4 and the story wrapping up with a much more epic conclusion. Maybe even getting clarity of what Diavolo actually is by proxy.
And as for Tooru, maybe having him a recurring sitcom antagonist "unintentionally" to Gappy by being a flirt to Yasuho yet helpful to the heroes while gradually giving hints of his true nature, which makes the revelation hit all the harder when it turns out how evil he is- making the conflict that more personal. Or go with Jobin who already has a villain arc gradually leading to antagonism.
Toru's appearance and relevance were about as poorly handled as "Somehow, Palpatine returned"

I agree with the point about the western manga releases ! I'm currently reading Part 7 and it has taken me 2 years to get to chapter76 and its not because i hate sbr i really like it, its just I'm such a slow reader when it comes to reading digitally the moment if i don't have the tab open all the time I just forget
If we were caught up with the manga releases I would have already completed it because reading manga physically is just so much easier for me. Now the hardcovers are nice i do like them and do own some volumes its just i wish they could have started sooner so we could atleast have the beginning of sbr out here, I'd honestly be happy with paperback volumes if we would actually be up to date.

17:09 In my case, what really pisses me off the jojo videogames is all star battle r new roster: most of them are ported from eyes of heaven, so shouldn't count as "new", in the base game the only parts that got actual new characters were part 5 and 6.
The DLC added too few characters, with two of them being from EoH and two being part 4 characters no one asked for and meanwhile part 8, which need the most amount of characters the most only got one at the end...

Part 7's coloured scans are odd at first cuz it, alongside with the first 3 parts I believe, were made at the same time. Then they stopped SBR and finished the rest of the series, and by then they were actually good.

oh my god a game where you play as basically any character from part 7 and you actually play in the steel ball run against other players (or npcs) sounds awesome.
What I hate about jjba is that every episode has to be a fight. I just wish we had a few episodes with characters just talking, travelling etc.
The best example of this was the sun episode from stardust crusaders. At first I thought we were just seeing how the heat and desert affects our characters, and that the "enemy" is the environment itself. Seeing that the sun was a stand and that guys were laughing just because of the two rocks was really disappointing.
Jobin is unironically one of the best jojo villians because hes a sympathetic villian done right hes not "yeah i killed your family but 8 years ago my dog died" he is trying to get the mcguffin that the hero wants for very good reasons "cure his son from a curse" i also like tge fact that Jobin has an ideal family like wife a son a dad but he kinda neglects them and doesnt treat them very well as apposed to gappy who had no one but went out of his way to protect yasuho or norisuke or the whole higashikata family really

The big problem of part 8 is that all those characters are there, but we don't actually see much of them, we don't really see them interacting much and they don't even get a chance to do useful stuff. The story just tells us they're there and that's it.
Like, Daiya gets a short arc then is gone for the rest of the manga. Hato kills one villain and is gone for the rest of the manga too. Norisuke appears for a bit earlier on and helps in one fight and then is gone for the rest of the manga. Joshu gets a filler arc for himself but only appears outside of that to be an annoyance. Kato is introduced and quickly forgotten until the very end where she suddenly shows up again just to die.
@MagmaMKII I agree I personally think Joshu should have been with Josuke and Yasuho instead of the plant guy. Joshu had an arc in shakedown where he started to act nice to Josuke then at the end he's like "fuck josuke" like that should have been expanded upon
Yes it's a shame that so many characters are underused, but at the same time, by making new characters instead, Araki opens the door for even more characters that can be used in supplementary material like Purple Haze feedback or even fan works. Like, JoJo wouldn't even have half as many characters if they were frequently being reused and I love the series' sheer number of character designs and colorful personalities. Even those minor villains have their fans, La Squadra for example is pretty universally loved even though they don't really reappear after their one fights. And sure, seeing them fleshed out more would be good but then we probably wouldn't have some other beloved minor characters. A lesser author and character designer would struggle to make them unique enough to stand out, but Araki has the skills and talent to make every throwaway character memorable to some people and that is absolutely a strength, even though it sacrifices a more traditional way of worldbuilding.
idk if anyone is watching this who hasnt been able to get into the series, but if you are, try starting on part 2 then come back to part 1 for context. I find part 2 is seperated just enough that you dont need to watch part 1 to get it, but you do need part 1 for the rest of the series to make sense
How would the world feel more lively with random people from Egypt ending up in Japan and then in Italy? That would make the world feel smaller, less creative, and more self-aggrandizing

Like you get to make your own character and make your own stand and have a little "psyche test" where you answer questions and the answers determine your stands powers.

Here in Spain they're doing a great job with the manga. We have now almost a third of jojolion published so yeah, I guess each publisher does their own thing

6:00 I get why he wouldn't want to keep bring back more followers of Dio for example or a ton of old stands and their users. It doesn't really allow for the interesting stand battle and introduction of new abilities. When an enemy is introduced the fight begins as kinda a mystery into what their ability is, how it works and then how to overcome it. Reusing an old stand cuts out those 1st steps because the audience already knows how the stand works. A great example of this is Boingo and Tohth in part 3. After his introduction you understand that him and who ever he's working with will mess up an interpretation of Tohth and then lose the battle. When Hol Horse & Boingo work together you pretty much already know Hol Horse is gonna mess up but youre just waiting for when. While I personally enjoy their time as a duo I can how that would be boring to write. Especially when instead you can write about a brand new stand ability and user with unique quirks that challenges our heros. When a stand user comes back for a rematch it kinda ruins the feeling of "This guy could be unbeatable" as you wonder how his opponent is gonna beat him.
I kind of want a Devil may cry jojo game, like you play as a joestar that has two stands, one that is his base one and the other that absorbs defeated enemy stands to use their abilities.

ok when first started jojos with my brother, we had skipped parts one and two, besause he said it was build up to part 3, and we had never really kept watching after the first few episodes of part 3, until i started watching parts 1 a good while after, and it is now my favorite anime

I was honestly thinking about a part 4 game that's akin to the Like a Dragon/Yakuza games. It could either go with the part 4 story or an original story. I don't mind if it's a beat'em up or turn based. But definitely exploring Morioh more and doing sub stories like the Yakuza games would be dope with the gang
The RPG games are Okuyasu-spinoffs because bro forgot that street brawls are not meant to be turnbased.
It's genuinely so scuffed that videogames always ignore the idea of Stand Users seeing the unawakened Hermit Purple as referenced by Araki at one point.(Heck, the anime adaptation of BT put a cameo of the stand in the opening, it is not like the idea is entirely forgotten across the franchise) There is some writingpotential there, yet the newest games with significant dialogue just didn't take it. Instead they decided to reference Jorge Joestar of all things.
And well, some more minor ones:
-Part 6 connects to its preceeding parts the least, instead going all the way back to part 3 to continue that whole conflict with the next generation without many extras. It is like if Part 4 suddenly decided to pick up major continuity with Part 1 while only paying cameo-service to parts 2 and 3. 5 didn't have the *biggest* connection to 4, but the short prologue quest of Koichi and Jotaro investigating Giorno is a lot more than we get moving from 5 to 6. And it is not like Araki just stopped tying new parts to older ones, because Part 8 very clearly establishes its ties to Part 7.
-We should have gotten the other DiU live action movies. It is genuinely sad looking at the "Chapter 1" in the title of the first one, because there just ain't anything else.
-Videogames should either be part specific again or not be afraid to go fully original interms of writing. The end of Eyes of Heaven effectively ripping off Part 3's ending(which is literally in the game already, mind you) was pretty disappointing.
7:24 Part 1 has a lot of diffrences indeed. And tbh, it is a 50/50 if the anime resonates with someone or not. While I actually prefer the changed scene-order at the beginning of it, the first episode has genuinely poor pacing because it skips around the entire time...because they pushed the entire prologue and "Dio the Invader"-part of the plot into a singular episode instead of just making it two. It got me on the brink of dropping out, but luckily the rest of it afterwards hooked me a lot more.
And well, the whole "sanding down"-thing you mentioned. A relatively big character change was part of it, which some people will like and others hate. Jonathan had a lot more rough edges in the early manga that were removed in the anime, presumably to correspond to how his legacy across the series would later become being a paragon of justice that effectively cursed evil to have to deal with his descendants in the future.
10:40 Viz continues to give manga readers a headache. I'm not really a manga reader myself, but I have certainly seen them do some damage in the past(Looking at you, english Yu-gi-oh manga translation.), so this does not surprise me at all.
JJBA has a live action movie of Part 4 but its only up the end of the first arc with Okayasu amd his bro. I even saw it here on youtube.

Pucci was the best with building up and re-occurring. I think Diavolo was handled pretty well, actually in that regard. He didn't show up for half of it, but there was actually a reason since so much mystery was built around him with the group working for him. Plus, I love how he fights a "minor villain." I love it when two people outside of our main characters fight.

About not having all the parts in the west, I live in Brazil and I tell you, is almost impossible to buy all the manga, specially the early parts.
Panini is the name of the official publisher of jojo in Brazil, and if you go to their official site you can only find some volumes of part 4, all of part 5 and part 6 is being published. Same goes for Amazon you can find some volume but they're mostly out of stock.
And I wasn't even talking about the price, if you want to buy the normal cover is around 50 reais (would be around 10 dollars if just converting, 50 reais is really expensive especially because this the price of a single volume) and if you want to buy the hard cover is 110 reais (not a actual comparison buy imagine paying 110 bucks for a volume because the cover is harder)

Thats my biggest gripe right now and has been for a very long time T_T Im kinda young still, but not by much, but at this rate, I fear I may NEVER get to see part 8 make a official us manga release and it makes me so sad. I have not gotten to read it yet. I still have hope for part 7 as we finally started getting part 6... but realistically.... well, id have thought we'd hear something for part 7 anime by now but still crickets as far as I know. I know animation takes a long time to do, but at this point in my life, I really need even just a sniff of reassurance its not too much longer to hold on to hope. T_T

While we are on par, alongside France, we have to wait a lot to have new editions or new volumes. For JoJo, we are still stuck on Part 8... for JoJoLands we have to wait almost another year kinda before we get the first volume. Is still better to be closer on the original publication to wait who knows how much. We recently ended the spinoff series Crazy Diamond's Demonic Heartbreak and get the Purple Haze Feedback Novel on May 14th. Yeah, the first JoJo Novel that was released like 23 years ago. For Novel releases we still have a little problems, manga series have also a bit of issues but it's slightly better (except for the Black Edition of Berserk, that was a mistake).
At least you guys are getting stuff, here in Brazil publication just started at 2018, and now we are at Stone Ocean vol. 2, and in the spin-off department we only got the (beautiful) Rohan at the Louvre, with no plans to publicate any other 😢

Araki has admitted himself that when making Stardust Crusaders, he was following shonen trends closely and that's why we never got a chapter's worth of Kakyoin's backstory. It never fails to piss me off when I remember it.

I really agreed at the second topic as well👍. The villains that enters the story and suddenly have a present with no foreshadowing whatsoever means it’s just a lazy plot device for the author who cannot take the story in a meaningful direction.

At least Netflix brought the OVA's and even dubbed for a lot of languages, but it's such a wasted potential that the Live-Action series is stuck at Japan, especially when Doramas where on a rise in some countries, like here in Brazil

I got into jojo's with the video games.I got all star battle r and thought it was cool, so I started watching the anime,it was really easy for me to get into jojo's because I liked the art style alot.I personally think the video games are good,I just wish there were more of them I would really like a game that is like aot freedom war(it's a game on roblox) :) where you and other people can play as the group in the corresponding part , if you die you have to you go back in the menu and try with another group of people, who ever is left alive will win idk but something cool. For example let's say fugo and mista are the only ones left alive and win, they get a cut scene of them walking away or doing something cool.That would be a cool game idea. :)

The only point I disagree with here is the not adding old characters in new parts.
I like that each part has a new cast and entirely separate plot lines. We already have seen the stories of the old cast so then it’s time to move on to the new cast.
This is a thing about jojo that I love that is also shared with something else I really like, Persona. I think that if jojo were connected it would make the series worse because we don’t need to further develop older characters, that just further complicates conversations on a part by part basis and makes each part less individual.
Plus, it’s a perfectly valid reason for Araki to not do it just because he doesn’t want to. After all, it’s the story he wants to tell, characters he wants to make. I’d rather he come up with his ideas than discard them for further development of already fine characters
One thing that I would loosely break up that I would change is the fact that the village in part three is a vampire so joseph should have tried to persuade jotaro to learn hamon. Even if jotaro said no Or couldn't learn it. Maybe with Their final clash. He could have had the breathing technique or something. Or not, use it all it doesn't matter. I just wish she was brought up at some point.. I also Think that avdol Should have stayed dead and his father actually be a character.And we could see the dynamic between Abdul's dad and the rest of the group even keeping the final death the same where he says.I won't protect you but then protect them anyway

Yeah I think araki could do more with old characters and could have expanded the story especially on part 1 and 2 but at the end of the day no story is perfect and jojo is a story about a bloodline not just 1 person in that bloodline.
Obviously im not saying what im about to say to try and change ur mind but dont you think that some villians work better with them being shown at the end but with tad bits of info on them, eg dio was hardly shown caz we knew him from p1 and seeing him less in p3 added to this anticipation of an old character we loved but also potential upgrades to him, with diavolo it felt more important to have him at the end as seeing him during gw would have made his presence slightly less important (seeing as his the end goal), tooru had a semi presence as he was meant represented in flow, rock humans etc(although i understand how you wouldn't enjoy it as much) but basically i feel that we all have different ops obviously but let's not forget that these villians aren't necessarily bad for not showing up all the time or early on its merely a different way of presenting a story and villain.but then again we are different and i personally prefer an array of view points on a villian rather than the standard (mind im not saying the standard is bad) and yes sometimes the villain can be written badly when showed later but there's more so the villain colliding with the structural integrity of the plot. Also, lovely video as usual.
You see the only thing I like about DIO is the fact that you have to know Dio. The late backstory thing isn’t an issue there for me because DIO has reputation. Tohru and Diavolo have that issue because you didn’t know them prior. You see a character that did the late backstory thing right was Kira in the anime. This is because of the Easter eggs.
