    Don’t write off 3D printed options. There is a whole world of opportunities that can be had with some 3D printed parts. I designed a kit to use 120 film in old style Polaroid land cameras and bring life back to them.

    • @BadFlashes
      @BadFlashes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Not that I’m against those options. I totally agree. Just not in that camera for me. Haha
      But I’m interested in your Land camera kit? That would be awesome to try it out. Sounds awesome

      I wish someone would figure out a way to 3-D print a film holder that allows the use of cut down 4X5 in my 195.

    Quick note on dslr scanning panos: I just stitch several regular 35mm images together. Just need to make sure to get as close to 1:1 as possible and not have any of the film holder mask in the part of the image that overlaps. Works out well for me now that capture one has built in pano support (though it is still probably way slower/less reliable than Lightrooms)
    Sheesh the dream setup here. I am jelly! Great photos as always! Unfortunately I can't justify buying a Mamiya 7 so I must make do with my Bronica SQ + Pano Back (the back is actually very pricey but the camera is a fifth the M7 so hey). Granted I don't get that sweet 6x7 goodness and have to make do with the 6x6 less wide pano (4:9 aspect ratio... ;-;). I do have a pair of them 3d printed ones but still haven't tried them out. They should work in most cases but obviously way less convenient cause you need a dark bag to roll it back and stuff. And if you have an automatic medium format camera (as in it handles the leader etc) then you likely want to craft a paper leader and stick it on which is a big hassle).
    Pro-tip: Never force the wind lever or knob. You may think you used a 36 exposure roll but used a 24 and in the process of trying to force the wind, strip a gear or two, break your expensive toy and cry. Definitely not a true story. Nope.
    For anyone else curious, a fair few 6x6 cameras and some 6x45 cameras had oem pano adapters (even the Rolleiflex TLRs). Unfortunately 6x7 is lacking in that sense (I am still deeply upset Bronica promised they would release a 135w back for their GS-1 but never did....).
    Other options!:
    - The 3d printed stuff everyone else mentioned. A nice thing is you could pop those into a 6x9 camera and get REALLY WIDE stuff. Or into god forbid even larger medium format cameras like 6x12 etc...
    - LowFi option: The Lomography Sprocket Rocket is apparently very fun (In An Instant has an awesome video on it th-cam.com/video/rHs9BqiM6_o/w-d-xo.html )
    - I have seen some folk take an SLR body, dremel/cut more of the film gate, stick a Mamiya Universal etc lens on the front, apply copious amounts of gaffer tape and glue and make their own monstrosity that I assume takes wonderful photos
    If we want to leave behind 35mm and go into the bigger league:
    - There's the Holga 6x12 pinhole camera famous for all the Holga reasons but now also pinhole. You could even hack it into having a real lens (e.g. www.holgamods.com/holgamods/612_Pan.html)
    - There's a lot of really nice pinhole cameras in 6x12 and even some in 6x17/18. I shot 1 roll through my Zero 618 and I am really excited to shoot more with it. (The Ondu looks even more fun with its rise pinhole thing ondupinhole.com/products/6x17-ondurama-rise )
    - 6x12 backs for 4x5 cameras are like ~$350-$450 and probably provide banger images (though in a measly 1:2 ratio). Heck you could buy a 6x17 camera (or a 5x7+617 back) for less than an Xpan
    - I have seen 1 6x24 camera....still cheaper than an Xpan
    - You could steal Jason's 8x10 camera and figure out how to shoot 4x10 on it

  • @lensaero
    @lensaero 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    I'm amazed it's taken you (and Jason) this long to add this to your M7, they are wonderful bits of kit. Top tip, use the 50mm and it's rangefinder (beg borrow or steal one!:) - the bright lines have middle third markings making it very easy to frame the pano shot.

    For anyone like me who desperately wanted to get into pano but doesn't have a medium format camera or xpan budget I highly recommend the horizon swing lens cameras. I ended up getting mine as a gift but the prices aren't to bad (especially compared to other true pano options), optics aren't perfect and there can be some distortion but overall I've gotten surprising fantastic results. It's a great option for testing 21:9 aspect ratio, also they're all mechanical. My only issue with the camera is rewinding gives me some trouble and mine occasionally gets lightleaks from the swinging mechanism, other than that one of the most fun cameras I have.

  • @Mazzeltoph
    @Mazzeltoph ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If you want to do this but don't have the 3500 bucks to invest in a mamiya 7 (although i would love to have that camera, I never spend more than 300 euro on a camera) there is another option with good glass and an affordable price (relative to mamiya or hasselblad). You could get a bronica ETRS set for somewhere between 300-500 bucks, buy the 135W back for another 500 and suddenly you are shooting XPan like panorama's on sharp lenses and on a widely supported for parts system for less than 1000 bucks. The biggest hurdle is finding a 135W back coupled with the specially made 135W viewfinder glass which has the framelines for the panorama (runs about 150 bucks seperately) but if you are lucky like me you might get one in the bronica etrs you buy. And than it is possible to get shooting pano's eaven cheaper since you could buy the cheaper 135N normal 35mm back, and modify its front plate to shot wider panorama's. Those run you about 200-300 bucks and suddenly you are shooting panorama for 600-800 bucks. It's not as easy to handle but hell, shooting cheaper is never easy :p

  • @gottanikoncamera
    @gottanikoncamera 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My favorite shot is the two trailers; great light! I’ve often wondered how different an XPan would be from just masking off the same relative aspect ratio on my 645 or 500 C/M since the width of 120 ain’t that far off from two 35mm crunched together.

    • @BadFlashes
      @BadFlashes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aw thanks! I dig that one tooo.
      Overall you can totally do it. I just want to be able to use 35mm film for those extra frames. You can also get 135 inserts for hasselblads or other cameras as well

    Okay, now I really want a Mamiya 7. Ive been eyeing the prices and waitin to jump and now there is even more of a reason. Glad you revisited this area though! I also heard about the fuji being kodak gold, crazy world we live in. Fuji hates film, they rather the world of film just fake it with some camera profiles. ope. I just love these panos, so good. About to get a 3d printer and want to try out the 35mm in my 645, we shall see what the future holds. Okay, now its time to go see what Baxter's dad brewed up into his video this week. Bye.

    If you already own a Mamiya 7 the pano option is a superior choice to the X-Pan. The lenses provide plenty of coverage (no vignetting) and you will never have to use that stupid filter with the dot in the center. Plus there’s no need to carry around another camera system. Genius!!!!

    you're 100% right to not trust a 3D printed pano kit for your Mamiya. it will fail on you and if it's something in the goddamn film advance train it's probably going to break some other things when it does
