Didn’t think we’d get another video before the end of the year!!! Congrats on all the ace work this year, you’re a great genuine photographer/dude producing great work, cheers to 2024
Dear Content Provider, thank you for providing fresh - and excellent - content for us sofa dwellers at this time of year when new photo inspo and ponderings is usually rather thin on the ground! Hope you've had pleasant holidays and kept the gout at bay.
Wow, this was my first introduction to your channel and holy shit dude I don't think I've seen a more compelling video in years. Insane production and editing.
Love the Haberman Hardware shot at 6:00 and how the two red cars on the far left work with the red stop sign and even the two bright yellow posts by the stop sign. The only bright colors in an otherwise moody, pastel scene. Nice!
I wanted to add a few things. First your videography is as compelling to me as the photography. Also, I watch a lot of TH-cam photography "influencers" and while I enjoy the content and entertainment, it often seems the who they hang out with, the events they get invited too, the sponsors and the equipment and the comedy value is foremost with them. To me, you feel like the real deal and while still entertaining and funny at times the passion and dedication for what you do is overwhelmingly evident. The locations, the background info on where you are and why, the behind the scenes scoop of what is happening adds so much to your content and shows there is so much more than just making photographs to you. Thank you for doing what you do.
I love this one. I was especially into the image of the bridge at about 1035. I grew up around those farms, and forests of the Pioneer Valley, and the way you dig into seeing and making images of the area is really inspiring.
But I have a question! Did you think about scanning these to include the sprocket holes? I know that could be gimmicky but there are a couple of spots where aspects of the composition got cut off like the camper van wheel… but they are probably there on the neg. Actually, I kind of like seeing sprocket holes because it’s a visual reminder of the medium on which image was made like where you see a painters image, but also strokes of their paintbrush. Sorry. I’ll stop waxing in your comments and maybe go do this myself.
haha never feel like editing yourself here, my friend. Sorry its taken me so long to get back to you. I feel the same way you mentioned about sprockets being gimmicky. Never really felt like it was necessary. As for the camper shot, you are spot on. It was poorly composed, it was my first time out shooting pano's on the 690 so it was a learning process. Even looking back, I can see how much I pulled the front of the camera up which was clearly too much but I tried to line up the abandoned apartments in the background.. It is what it is.
I recently have shot 35mm film in my Horseman 980 with a 6x9 back. I was happy with the results even if my developer was too old. Finding compositions for panoramic is the hardest part, I'll take your advice and get closer. Thanks! Great video and Happy New Year 🎉
Awesome video. Damnit, now I have to buy a GW690. The shot of the hardware store is the definition of cinematic. Your storytelling and video work have progressed. Even the music nicely fits. Looking forward to more.
IDK, the compositions you shared are beautiful. Extra-wide panos are always hard, but I love the ones you've shared. Great photographs and great video. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and work! Happy New Year!
Beautiful images and cinematography! I can relate to constantly making mistakes with nighttime film photography, was really happy with a shot yesterday morning until i realized I had forgotten to mirror up the Pentax 6x7... Anyways, thanks for an inspiring year Robbie!
For panoramic photography, I have used 35mm roll film in the following medium format cameras: Fuji GW670 rangefinder with fixed 90mm f/3.5 lens Fuji GSW690 rangefinder with fixed 65mm f/5.6 lens Mamiya RB67 SLR with 50mm f/4.5 and 90mm f/3.5 lenses. Of the three, I prefer the RB67 because I can load 35mm film in a 220 film back and easily change to 120 film in a 120 film back at any time. With the Fuji rangefinders, when I load the camera with 35mm film, I cannot easily change to 120 film.
Glad to see you shooting like this! I've shot my own fuji 6x9 about 50/50 like this vs with 120. I'd inherited a whole spool of B&W film and it gave me quite a few rolls to experiment with. Finding shots where the extra width adds to the photo was an enjoyable exercise. I'm not one to enjoy "diptychs" that much but I could see a pair of shots like the ones at 14:16 working well as one.
@@RobbieMaynardCreates I shot a lot over the summer. A roll or two a week. We were watching my parents dogs and taking a bunch of hikes with them, made for a great excuse to get out and shoot. I've been on a bit of hiatus over the fall & winter as other hobbies came to the forefront though
It would probably be interesting to put a horizontal light streak filter on the lens. I guess you would then get sort of a "anamorphic" look. Of course there will be no oval bokeh but especially at dawn with all the lights it would give off a very cool look. As i love anamorphic lenses and cinematography but also love shooting film it would be a unique way to combine these two things.
@@RobbieMaynardCreates ah okay! I dont have a dark bag but I think taping the film to the lead of an cut off empty canister on the other side should work too :)
Dude God Bless You! Let me know how do you metering for night or early morning photos? Like calculate time + some seconds exposing? Do you usually shoot at more than f8 or f16? I mean this shoots are so sharp like f32 ❤ Sorry for my englando, take a sleep and rest!
Thank you! I just use a light meter app on my phone to calculate the corresponding f-stop. I shot all of these images at f8. It's my favorite aperture for this lens.

Awesome video Robbie! Of course the fog didn't hurt either. lol. This video stepped into the realm of great starting with the footage of driving in the fog. Too bad you didn't get some photos of that too. EVerything else was just killer. I know it's kind of cliche but I also like a little sprocket action included in the photos as well.
Amazing video and thank you for continuing to inspire. What was the rewind process like? Developing? I have the adapter but been too hesitant to try it!
I didn't think it was too complicated but I spooled the 35mm film on an empty 120 roll (holding it in place by tape) and once I was done, I just put the camera in my dark bag and then manually rewound the film back into the cassette - It only took me a few minutes to do so. Developing was normal.
Great video Mr Maynard 👌Will it be a dry-January? I recently got myself a GSW690ii with plan of using it for TexPans, I'm testing it first with some 120. Did your negatives line-up with the centre of the viewfinder or were they higher/lower? Happy New Year!
@@RobbieMaynardCreates Yeah, seeing that film stretched over the gigantic hole back there, I'm amazed you didn't miss more details at the edges of the comps! Looks like awesome fun, and I agree, more people should play with foreground elements in panoramas. Kudos!

It was far easier than doing all that. You have to tape the roller to the left of the take up spool. That's what triggers the frame counter. Dont forget to flip that counter to 220 so you can get all 13-14 frames!

Correct-o-mundo my friend! I just brought my back with me and changed on the fly.
Hopefully this isn't a silly question... But couldn't you get the same aspect ratio and composition by cropping the top/bottom of the 120 film?
Definitely. You would only get 8 frames and it seems pointless to waste the film like that. 35mm gives you 14-15 frames which is nice.
