  • This video shows the highlights from the Taffy making process. They do things the old school way using machines from nearly 100 years ago. If you're ever in the area it's interesting to see and fun to watch.

This place had 8 feet of water in it during Hurricane Ike in 2008. Thankfully, they saved these old machines by moving them upstairs before the storm. Also, you can't beat this place's ice cream. It's specially made there using recipes from a local ice cream company that was around almost 100 years ago. The family that owns this shop bought the ice cream company when it went bankrupt and still makes ice cream with those recipes. The cinnamon ice cream malt is to die for. It's also like $8.

Everything was built to last forever, intentionally, back then. Where as everything built today has the intention of lasting for only a few years, so they can sell parts.

I remember seeing a taffy machine like that when I was a kid at the beach boardwalk in NJ. There was no big show, just a machine in the window that you could watch and then go in and buy some salt water taffy. We also had taffy pulls at home on a much smaller scale of course! Delicious fresh and still slightly warm.

I sew and knit, let me tell you, few things are made like they used to be! The only thing I know that’s still made just as well is spinning wheels (little ones for home use), as they’re still hand built. But sock knitting machines, for example, are all antiques. And the best sewing machines are by far and away antiques! There are some good modern ones, if you want to spend several thousand on a single sewing machine, but the really good ones are the antique cast iron ones.

When I was just a wee child, my daddy used to stand me next to the taffy machine window and I would watch that machine - for hours if they would have let me. I stood my children at the same window, my granddaughter too. I have always considered watching that machine a part of any trip to the beach. Sigh, now I am to old. They make it and wrap it before this old great-grandmother is out of bed. The wrapping machine is Awesome! I can still go there in the afternoon and buy some. My favorite flavor is chocolate with walnut. Hubby likes lickerish. .

Even if it's his job, you need to appreciate his hard work here; he could just make the taffy and skim over most of the processes (like the sweet/candy shop here does) but he doesn't, he explains it loud and thoroughly.

I seriously hate when people judge someone else's occupation. If you want pizza delivered who delivers it? Are you making fun of them then? What about a cab driver if you've messed up so much you HAVE to rely on taxis! Or a caregiver that is taking care of your grandmother because you don't have time or simply do not want to do the dirty work. We all serve our purpose here. I think this man loves his job making candy. I know I enjoy watching the process. Imagine a world without candy makers. It would be depressing. We need different wonders in the world.
Quit judging. I hope everyone has an awesome week. No matter what your position is. You're needed and you are loved. ❤

I highly recommend watching Lofty Pursuits. Not only does he ply the trade like a master, he doesn't sound like a drill master while doing it. He loves his job and it shows. This guy just looks like he's working at McDonalds, and it's bored out of his mind.
