Hopefully this time everyone makes it. A trip I would one day love to make. The photos you shared are fantastic. Thank you!

That will never happen, not only for environmental reasons, but also because there is a secret UFO base. Not kidding. The evidence is more than enough to convict someone of murder. As a famous UFO/UAP researcher said, the amount of evidence on the issue, "is an embarrassment of riches!" Okay enough crazy talk, great video, Z9 and 100-400mm both look amazing, although I'd much rather have the 70-200mm f/2.8 S with 1.4x TC and a second setup with a longer lens, I personally have and love the 500mm f/4E VR FL and since it works so well with the TC-14E III, I'd probably have a 1.4x TC on it as well for Antartica! You obviously can get away with a 400mm and Z9 due to the megapixel count. But I really think if at all possible you'd be better off with a 500pf or something like the new 800mm f/6.3 S! I just got back from Yosemite and I used my 70-200mm and 500mm FL lenses much more often than I thought I would. For the "Firefall" event a couple weeks ago, I almost exclusively used the 500mm FL and mostly with the TC-14E III.

A 100-400 mm is not only a good wildlife lens on APSC cameras but also a great landscapes lens for any camera to pick out details of the environment, it is also good for times when you can't get close to your subjects, i use it for landscapes ,seascapes, wildlife and lighthouses in the middle of the Hudson river, where I live in NEW YORK STATE.

As a Sony user, my 70-350mm is on the camera almost permanently now (105-525mm equivalent). You don't realise with landscapes how far away you are from the thing that your brain has already imagined at a scale and size bigger than it will appear on a standard lens. People often make the mistake of trying to get the entire spectacular scene onto one photo and end up with very distance landmarks it a flat and wide image. Framing is the key!

It must take every bit of your experience, knowledge and photographic instincts to take such incredible landscape photographs that are beautifully composed and resist the temptation to just point the camera at all the amazing scenery in a place like this and just hit the shutter button. A true lesson in landscape photography. The old adage says you never get your best shots of a place on your first visit. So heal up that knee and get ready for a great 2024 trip Nigel! In the clouds at 19:20 it looks like there are white waterfalls or ice walls in the clouds in the orange sunlight part of the clouds in that iceberg shot, very spectacular indeed! I have a 100-400mm and150-600mm lens and they do help you to get close when you have no other options. Your large printed panorama is beautiful. Do you find glossy or matte better for your prints? At work I have a 44" wide plotter and I just heavyweight coated paper and most of my large format work is to hang on walls or for trade shows or community engagement and I use a satin finish laminate on my 44" thermal laminator. The satin finish is better when you can't control the lighting conditions so there are no reflections spoiling the view, especially when you have a crowd of people and not everyone can get a good viewing angle.

Great video. When I started in photography I did it for landscape photography, since everyone recommended the use of wide angle, I bought the camera with one. After a few months, in love with moon photography, I bought a 150-600. In the end, I ended up using more for landscape 150-600 than the wide angle...haha. The recommendations are fine, but there is nothing like testing yourself to realize what you like to do and what equipment is best suited.

What an amazing adventure and great photos. I didn’t know about the safe guards to protect the area. I am very glad about that.
I saw an experiment once that showed if you used a lens hood on a warm lens in cold weather you can create a heat haze right in front of the lens that will soften all images. Once the lens temperature matches the ambient temperature the problem goes away.

Couldn't agree more on having a long zoom in the bag for landscapes. Interesting you said 70% of your shots were taken with the 100-400. That is the exact same percentage of mine on a recent trip to Sichuan Province (and another last week to Huangshan Mountain). However the 100-400 is a very heavy lens (mine is a Sony) if hiking/camping in mountains rather than on a ship ;)
Hence I now take the very very sharp Tamron 70-180 (lightest in its class I believe) in place of the 100-400 since I found that 90% of my shots were taken between 100mm and 200mm.
Loved the video and your work ! Poor Mads :(

Just sold my Sony 100-400. Never found it worth the effort to lug it around for photography when you are in the landscape (as opposed to looking at it from a distance). ( I shoot very little wildlife, where these lenses excel.) Thought it would open up additional opportunities for compositions, but I found that the majority of the shots I took with it where under or close to 200mm (as I noticed many of the shots you featured were). Also, at these long focal lengths, to get a sharp shot, you are fighting the extremely shallow depth of field, you are shooting through a lot of atmosphere that often holds distorting stuff, and you have to have great technique with a 60mp camera. So, for me, the answer is, stick to the 70-200, hit the crop button if you want a 26mp shot at an equivalent 300mm, or throw on a tele-converter. You get to carry a lighter lens that you might actually have on you when you need it.

Beautiful images Nigel. I now feel validated on my use of my 100-400 for landscapes. Ever since I purchased my Sony GM 100-400 a few years ago it has been my primary lens for shooting landscapes. I love this focal range. And your point about foreground objects is so true, it is very difficult to include much foreground when using such a lens. But that is its power, isn't it? You have to love the compression. Can't wait to see your wildlife shots.

It does not sound, nor did I hear anything about you using any filters on any of your photography. The changes in the weather surely had a tremendous effect on the colors in many of your photos. That "pano" is magnificent, well done, BRAVO!! 😎 I really appreciate all the terrific details and information. You did a great job.👍 I sincerely hope your knee issues are not a serious issue. In any event, I wish you all the best, whatever your doctors recommend. 😄

What an experience. Super images. So sad that Mads missed this but he has something to look forward to when you go again in two years. Love the penguins. Take care of yourself.

Thanks for another great video. I never miss them. Good luck with the knee. In rehab for my knee now. It looks like a year of PT before I am 100%.

Thanks for sharing ! I bought the Sigma 100-400 f/6.3 for my Canon full-frame when our holiday in 2020 got cancelled due to Covid.
Besides landscape photography I also like bird photography and a kingfisher in the local park gave me much joy of that lens.
About a year ago, the Fagradalsfjall volcano was about to erupt and that meant that I wanted to go to Iceland ASAP. Due to the pandemic and vaccines not becoming available in my country soon, I had to wait until mid July to get there. By that time I could no longer get close to the eruption itself so I even bought an 1.4x extender. I enjoyed shooting with the lend with and without the extender.

Having watched Adam, James and your vlog, what amazes me is how stable you all got your footage, like the cameras were on granite...outstanding work. The excitement in your voice throughout is brilliant, and hardly surprising considering what you brought back. The book is going to be incredible. And that pano, my house isn't big enough to display it 😂

Beautiful images! I’m planning a trip to Norway and Iceland, a cruise, in June, 2023 and would be most interested in a video about what gear you packed and how you packed for your flights and the trip in general. I anticipate shooting from the ship frequently with my 100-400. I’m a Sony shooter but have their 100-400mm lens I plan to take but I’m not sure if I’ll take a tripod. Thanks for all your videos!
