TURMERIC! I still eat rice. Towards the end of May 2022 I started having a craving for Turmeric Rice. One night I did something about it and made a pot and ate three(3) bowls that night. I was expecting to have a fasting glucose of around 130mg/dL or higher but was greatly surprised. My glucose meter showed 81mg/dL. I thought I'd do a bit of experimenting to be sure and didn't eat anything with turmeric for a couple of days. I saw, my glucose numbers rise. Had some on a burger and fries, homemade, and the next day my reading was down again. My blood pressure also saw a drop. In June I had blood work done before seeing my doctor and he was pleased as everything came back as being 'normal.' This was the first time he did not chastise me about anything. My A1c had also dropped from 7.2 in December to 6.4 plus my weight had dropped 12 pounds from the 207 it was. Now I put it in my rice, pasta and first cup of coffee in the morning and also use it to season meat. Maybe it's just right for my blood type of B+? Black pepper also helps it to get into your system. Years ago I took the gelcaps and didn't really notice any difference. Apparently cooking with it is the best way for me to go. I don't know if it will work for everyone but I don't think it will hurt to give it a try.
Thank you for yet another great video. I have been prediabetic for several years, sliding into diabetic last summer. 6 month wait for a endocrinologist with Covid going strong. I finally got an appt with their dietician. In the meantime I found your channel. What a godsend! By the time of my Dr appt I had already dropped 20 lbs and my sugars were somewhat in range without medication. Add in Farxiga due to coronary and kidney issues compounded by age and my latest bloodwork is much better, my blood sugars are totally in range, and I am learning to read my body. I have my energy back, as much as can be with the coronary, and I feel like I am on back on a good path. Without your positive, informative videos dedicated to educating anyone willing to learn, I would be a frustrated mess. Thank you!
I place some shredded roast beef, drippings with butter and black pepper in a pan and added a little water and some shelled pecans! The heat and moisture tenderizes the pecans and enable the meal to be better than carnivore only.

The best rice substitute would be BUCKWHEAT. Buckwheat is a seed, not wheat. The texture and size almost similar to that of rice. Quinoa and sweet potato are also healthy substitutes . Buckwheat, quinoa and sweet potato are ALL GLUTEN-FREE, complex carbs, extremely healthy and won't cause inflammation.
Thank you for these rice alternatives. I will definitely try them. I wonder if it is safe to take a sugar lowering supplement with Januvia medication. Please advice. Thank you again.
Nice tips Doc! Here’s another substitute that actually isn’t rice… cauliflower! It’s chopped and frozen and has the texture of rice. But it can also be prepared fresh in a food processor or a blender at home. Thanks for sharing!

How about organic brown rice? 3/4 cup and having it 4 times (Saturday thru Tues) a week on OMAD and exercise. Wednesday thru Friday are very low carb on OMAD and exercise.
Is cauliflower rice a good alternative as well? I've been making that as of late, a mexican variation of it, I heard it was good for preventing big spikes. Looking for anything to help prevent or control blood sugar spikes, all these options presented look good too though!
I'd like to share with you my journey in eliminating rice and pasta from my diet. The answer to your question is YES. I consume cauliflower rice in addition to keto friendly meals. I make sure that my carbo intake is low, zero white sugar, and the meals are nutrient rich. I thought I had a high insulin level but actually I had hyperinsulinemia. I used to eat rice, potatoes, bread, noodles, and pasta everyday, and deserts with white sugar. When I cut these out from my diet and replaced them with more veggies and protein-rich foods and also go on intermittent fasting, I lost a lot of my excess fats, and the joint pains in my knee went away, and my insulin level is now at a healthy level. In 2 months I've lost 4 inches off my waist and I could wear my smaller clothes again. Now I consume 1 meal a day, sometimes 2 meals a day. Cauliflower keeps you full and can be eaten as rice form or steamed or bake. It's about changing my mindset that rice no longer need to be my staple and the planet has so much healthy variety of goodness to offer me as healthy sustenance. And I don't eat cauliflower everyday as there is so many other variety of veggies and eating more natural proteins. And I totally remove snacks from my life. If you want snacks, make it protein-rich ones and not carb-snacks. I used to struggle in finding a diet in the past. Keto and fasting helps me in just 2 months. And I replace white sugar with healthy sugar replacement when baking my own deserts. My mind-set is I'm not missing anything. And now it has become my healthy lifestyle. I hope what I'm sharing will help you discover other healthy choices. All the best to you on your journey to a healthier lifestyle.

What about barley? The references I have checked list its glycemic index as being in the 20 - 30 range. I have never cared much for (white) rice, using it only as a vehicle to soak up whatever sauces were being served with it, but I have always loved grains. Thus, I eat a lot of bulgur and barley. I hope to give farro a try in the near future. You didn't mention one of the best attributes of bulgur which is that it is incredibly easy to cook: simply pour boiling water on it, let it sit for about 15 minutes, then drain it. It is easier than rice or just about any other grain. There is no chance to burn it.
Hi Doc thnx so much so informative as always. Would you recommend any of the millets available and how much can one consume at a sitting please? Thanks much luv your great work!!
People in Japan are heavy consumers of rice ( about 48Kg per person per year) yet have outstanding longevity. Moreover, most of the rice they eat is white rice. If eating that much rice is deleterious to one's health, what accounts for their excellent health?
You mentioned bulgur wheat, which is 1 you mentioned I really like. But when you make Tabouleh, how much will it affect your blood sugar,if at all? But anyway, keep up the good work.
Sorry, but Konjac, farro, Bulgarian wheat can make decent meals, but they are not suitable substitutes for rice. I will try Parrish rice, otherwise will stick to cauliflower or smaller amounts of basmati. On very special occasions, smaller amts regular rice.
