    Bro you could have messaged me, and got info from the source lol. Lots of misconceptions here, but we could definitely market the new game stuff better. Not sure it would change much, but maybe a trade bonus towards new games would help. I’d be happy to talk about pricing / pricecharting, etc if you want.

    Generally, my local game store experience always goes like: I walk in, I see the insane prices they’re asking for retro consoles with a controller sold separately for like 70 dollars. Might look at the comic rack if there is one, mostly going to be hot garbage and random mismatched chapters of Naruto and Soul Eater.
    They don’t have any of the games you want on the shelf, maybe 1-2 in the display case that is going for 70-80 dollars, and they get irritated or talk down to you as a plebeian when you ask simple questions. Then I leave, they never say goodbye, no nothing, and never come back again.

  • @AceFondu
    @AceFondu 20 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

    My local game store has a similar issue with re-pricing stuff, often they'll have 3 to 4 copies of a game on the shelf all with different prices. The way they handle it is when you get to the counter they'll tell you the actual price only if it's cheaper, and you save some money that way.
    I think it is too harsh though to expect these stores to constantly switch out pricing for thousands of games every week just based on what price charting says. It's completely ridiculous honestly. Frankly, the way to handle it is if you have some inventory that sits for too long, that's when you review and update prices.

    • @steviefreakinc
      @steviefreakinc  19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It is possible, I used to do it for a store I worked in. That was my entire role there. The key is to prioritize the popular games and work your way down. That way at the very least if something is overpriced, it’s probably something no one will bat an eye at to begin with like Madden 2007

      That's how distributors work. Costo, Walmart, etc. get first dibs at supply and can barter a price for bulk purchases. Smaller stores are left with a smaller amount or no supply until the next print. I think this sentiment comes from a lack of understanding. Basically if Costco buys all the games, your mom and pop can get ten and you will only qualify for ten, since you are a small store.
      Talk with small comic or game store owners. I only stumbled across this video and it sounds like it comes from a place of not knowing how these businesses run or the environment in which these business run.

According to pricecharting, pokemon blue has never been 70 dollars. It's also a high selling popular title that has been on average 45ish dollars for 2 years. so I wanted to share a random anecdote about cooper/djvg: I'm a big collector of japanese retro games. I found their channel some years ago because they sell a lot of them, so I became interested in watching their videos because of that. cooper would get in huge boxes of japanese imports to resell from a "secret source" and "supplier" that he didn't want to tell his subscribers about, literally because he didn't want them to go in and buy things before he did. having recognized the boxes/labels on the stuff he'd get in the unboxing videos, his "secret source" is a place called suruga-ya, which is a chain of retail stores in japan that sell used books, anime merch, video games and more. he acted like this was some sort of super secret honey hole that he wanted to keep to himself when, in reality, suruga-ya consists of hundreds of stores across japan. it is not some sort of small mom-and-pop store with limited supply. they are a nationwide chain.
    another thing I think is strange is how he referred to the place he was getting these games from as a supplier. it sounded like he was referring to it as the type of wholesale supplier only business owners have access to. it's highly likely he was using a proxy/mail forwarding service like buyee or fromjapan to order everything. I should clarify that *anyone* can use these sites. they aren't some super secret thing, and anyone who wants to buy items from japan can use them. almost all of the time you can find amazing deals on items you can only get in japan compared to buying them on ebay or elsewhere.
    maybe this is a stupid rant, especially since the videos I'm referring to are a couple years old at this point. who knows. but as someone who's passionate about video game collecting and wishes for collecting to be affordable and fun for everyone, gatekeeping out of greed is a scummy thing to do. buying up loads of cheap games to resell at a huge markup is already unfair, but gatekeeping the place you buy from because you think it's a metropolis of resell value is even more unfair and also scummier.

    • @steviefreakinc
      @steviefreakinc  20 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I am not surprised to hear this at all. Gatekeeping is the resellers main move and strategy to keep themselves relevant. Practically standing between consumer and source. Apparently SicCooper is worse than I originally thought. I regret talking to him at Sege now.

      When buying it yourself it's smart to batch orders to amortize the shipping and handling fees or waiting for when surugaya does their occasional free shipping deal. It's convenient to be able to buy things one off that have already been imported, but it's surprising for it to have been kept a secret considering it's one of the best overseas friendly sites for buying used goods.

    I don't know about Costco in America but here in Australia you can have a business account it used to be a little bit cheaper than the normal one. The advantage of the business account is you can do two transactions on one card at one time. So potentially you could have got 20 games. One time I was in there and there was like three Hillbilly looking guys with two trolleys stacked so high, mountains of 20 kilos which is about 40 pounds of sugar bags. Leave brick and mortar stores alone for us collectors man. We like deals too and not having to pay more. I agree with you Steve on the consistency of pricing. Stores should have a system to make prices fair across the board since they do fluctuate. Gamers pay prices they believe are worthwhile. It's why Samson goes for $2-3K and Mary Kate and Ashley goes for $0. Respectfully, I think you should try running a game store and see what challenges you face. It sounds like this store owner is a good dude, prioritizing paying his employees over strictly profiting. Think of how many corporate bosses are earning 400 times what the base employee earns and their business doesn't profit for years and years, like TH-cam.

    I don’t want to be a defender of resellers, but he does own his own shop. He sells many different items. He’s not just price gouging a particular item. I personally have bought things from DJ and find their prices perfectly reasonable. He’s talked about things like Pokémon pricing and that it’s hard for him to keep those items in stock. So that’s just basic supply and demand.
    This last year I’ve been into amiibo collecting and have purchased some from them. I found their prices to be almost always under eBay.
    I also feel like when you say “just buy it in person or on eBay” that you’ve not actually bought anything on eBay recently. If you find anything on eBay that matches price charting, that is an absolute deal.
    I don’t know all of your background but you sound like an armchair business owner. Saying things like “just do what GameStop does” is one of the most outrageous statements I’ve heard.

    "You can do both." is the understatement of the reseller world! You can make profit and survive and support your family or whatever the frick without needing to price everything at top dollar and screw everyone in the process! One of the most disgusting comments I saw on a certain bird's comment section was a guy talking about how he found a prostatic leg at a thrift store for a few bucks and profited thousands off it. That hurt me to my core. Especially now with the state of thrift store, companies that get their inventory for free selling shit out pricing those who used to afford it. I didn't grow up needing to buy my clothes at thrift stores but my mother did. I went to school with people who did.

      i also don’t specifically stock new games, that market is awful, let gamestop keep stabbing that market, im cool😂 but if you want a NES game from you childhood for $10? sure i got that.
      one thing i hate though is, i hate knowing that i have to have a markup, because if i didn’t, these desired games will run off my shelves due to amazon sellers, or other resellers. My markup rate is usually 3-5$ difference than the price chart value. (condition variance) ( a clean label pokemon blue vs pokemon blue with a torn label will not be priced the same)
