My AK Blew Up! Zastava Zpap M92

  • As stated.. My AK blew up. I try to summarize on what happened. the tifle is a Zastava M92 or Zpap M92. It ran most of its life suppressed with a KNS piston running as soft as it could to run reliable. Shooting a mix of corrosive surplus and brass S&B ammo. I want to tag some of the names I appreciate a lot in the gun world, especially the AK community.
    Thank you all.

    As an AK builder , my opinion is of two things. The bolt didn't lock up all the way , excessive headspace or it didn't seat all the way. Second opinion is the ammo was loaded up way too hot. Thats an extremely rare occurrence ! Im betting on headspace. But the way the bolt lug rolled makes me think of extremely high chamber pressure. I have never seen that before other than on cast trunnions. Anyways hlad youre okay and have all your finggies !

      Great observation. My first impression was an over loaded round. There have been examples of ammo from Turkey - NOT 7.62X39 but as I recall 30-06 or similar in a batch that was excessively loaded with propellant, leading to some problems with as I recall bolt guns. That is from my recollection and I have not googled the articles etc., but that was within the past three years, here in the US. Your observations on the Bolt wear were spot on also. Might it possibly be a combination of over loaded ammo AND excessive head space at that critical split second in time?

    • @masta51
      @masta51 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I would gamble it has a KNS and set very low causing light battery and wear. I have seen this before with Izzy and Arsenal when the gassing is super low and the bolt has really hot loadings.

    Your english is fine brother.
    1) gas system pressure has nothing to do with this. If a rifle is over gassed it will just extract violently, tear case rims, recoil harshly, and batter the rear trunion.
    2) it appears to me the front trunion was brittle, or soft. Brittle could cause a sudden fracture and blow out, and bolt engagement face wear …. Which you have…. This will lead to increased head space, and violent blow out. Soft would cause trunion engagement face wear and thus again increased head space and a similar blow out.
    I suggest every enthusiast has head space gauges and check periodically

    • @knedlops.
      @knedlops.  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yea, bolt wear is something else. It kinda gets 'run in' but the weak faulty metalurgy is troublesome indeed. Trunion cracked and coused excessive wear on the lug in just 20 rounds.

    Could you make a follow up video showing the barrel without the hand guard on, curious if there is any bulging in the barrel.
    I wonder if a squib round followed by a normal round pushing out the stuck bullet in the barrel created overpressure and thus shearing the lugs on the trunion and bolt.

    Man, I'm sorry to hear this.
    From one Zastava owner to the next, this is a very rare thing, I don't know if I have ever seen a Zastava M92 blow like this. The M92 is a well built firearm, this one obviously was a tool that slipped through the QC cracks or something. I've heard of M92's putting down 10k rounds and still having plenty of life to them so to see yours blew up on you is pretty crazy. Im wondering if there was something off about the bolts rotation that may have caused a out of battery discharge. Idk hard to tell. Ide get in touch with ZastavaUSA and explain the issues I had, I feel like they would take care of you, however the suppressor may draw problems idk. I run a 4 piece flash can on mine, not a suppressor so idk the fine print on and kind of warranty it might have.
    But im wishing you the best.
    If youre to disheartened to buy another Zastava, I would highly recommend WBP. You can get a milled mini jack off AOA website for a good deal. Quality AK's from Poland.

Not saying it was his fault, but I showed a friend how to use my Slidefire stock when they were legal over a decade ago. It happened during a burst. It wasn’t suppressed. There was an odd bang at the end of the string. It blew the dust cover off even. The bullet case was still in the receiver, but not all the way. The right side of the case burst open. My receiver was swollen too. The bolt still would manually cycle, like a good AK would, but I never shot it after that. I don’t know what caused it. Trunnion broke. It's a non bulged trunnion. So an early m92. Do you know who made that AK? Possibly a cast trunnion looking at it. Is there markings on the outside of the front trunnion? You may of had a bad round not go out the barrel and next round blew it up. Happened to me using Igman ammo but my next round wouldn't chamber thankfully and I knocked out the projectile w/ my cleaning rod. It was bad gunpowder in the Igman ammo I had bought.

    Nyet comrad. English is fine. Rifle, not so much. That was a metalurgical failure of the trunion. That particular failure originated as a structural failure of the front trunnion from full battery. I have seen one cast gun explode nearly identically. The cast guns are so soft that they usually just bend and stretch, or wear abnormally. That gun had other problems. . . It could also have happened this way to a gun with a forged trunnion if it tempered too hard. In this case, with higher round count, I think likely one of several things or combination of them likely caused this. Your gas system has nothing to do with chamber pressure. 1 headspace may have been on the tight side. 2 you may have had a very subtle anomally in hardness of the front trunnion. You could check this by dimpling an undamaged area of it with a rockwell scale and comparing to a known spec. 3 you had a defective round somewhere along the line that had too long a neck and caused a pressure spike that damaged the trunnion. You will likely find evedence of a material related failure in OAL length of your fired casings growing over time; rapidly when leading up to failure. This is due to growing headspace, which can cure neck related pressure spikes, batters itself over time and worsens.

    • @knedlops.
      @knedlops.  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It looks more and more like it got over tempered, making it brittle. I checked empty casings on a regular basis to check for abnormality, dinted casings and such, but since the kns i haven't been seeying anything. I have cca 1k of brass s&b casings looking perfect. Thx for your opinion.

    • @cutlerf2194
      @cutlerf2194 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @knedlops. One symptom to note that isn't always immediately obvious is stretch rings. In some brass, they can be hard to see, and other brass very obvious. If you were checking case OAL with a mic, you would've seen that dimension elongate slightly, but most of any change would occur in the last few rounds before failure. They can occur anywhere forward of the case head, usually forwards of the thicker portion of the case wall, and aft of the bottle neck, but can also form on the bottle neck (shoulder) itself. You may also try to mic the base of the cases, just forward of the head, and see if you can detect any bulging that is beyond normal. Due to the cases taper, this can be a good early warning sign, and I see it a lot in 30-30 marlin 95 pattern guns that go out of headspace, usually coupled with backed out primers. The latter won't be present if the primer pockets are staked and the rounds use hard military style primers, but may have a slightly shallower pin dent with a slight lip around it that will sang your finger nail. If you reload with a manual press, these will feel just a bit harder to resize. If one doesn't have a micrometer, you can check this with a steel straight edge ruler held lengthwise on one side of the case.
      I will note that I had heard of QC issues with Zastava's receivers in the last couple of years, but nothing about trunnion failures. I think this is a testament to the ak. Even in the event of a catastrophic breech failure, you were still protected.

    Extremely high chamber pressure..blocked barrel, suppressor blocked or a defective round that was loaded way too hot. There also the possibility you acquired a booby-trapped round that when fire destroys gun and maiming the shooter these rounds are made by different government. These rounds are left or supplied to the opposition force secretly by different means to wreak havoc on the opposition force by maiming troops and damaging the guns using the exploding bullet!

      Soft would be better in this cas. This was excessive heat treatment, making it brittle.
