Anyone who made fun of Air Supply secretly listened to them and liked it.
I went to pick up my best bud one nigh in 85 to go cruise town, chase girls, drag race, whatever we could get into etc. This guy was metal head #1, while I was punk / new wave. I pulled up about 45 minutes early and got out to knock on the door. I heard this song, and this voice singing the chorus with no instrumentation. I thought , " Hey, they must have released an acoustic version, and they have an acapella section ." Turns out, it was my Iron Maiden, Ozzy loving buddy singing in the shower. I didn't knock, I just sat outside laughing to myself, wishing I had a tape recorder or my portastudio and a mic. It was really one of the most uncool things for a guy then to like them. But, now that I'm older, I actually do like some of their music. It's not my main course, but if it's on I won't change it. Sometimes when we're young, we let our insecurities keep us from enjoying things we should give ourselves a chance to enjoy.

@@wolf762x51 Uncool is really about being afraid of what others think or say. I was the same when younger. Liking AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, Rush etc. But I had disco albums too :-) As Peter Gabriel once sang with GENESIS, "I know what I like and I like what I know." At one time I didn't like the old crooners but now I'm older, Sinatra and Tony Bennet etc. sound good ^_^

“Making Love Out of Nothing at all “ is the best Air Supply. Air Supply was one of the LOVE ballad groups. Probably by far a great majority of my high school female friends favorite band back in the early 80’s. I remember listening to Kasey Kasem’s Top 40 countdown on Sunday to see where our favorite songs were going to rank that week.
This song was all over the radio, all the time. I'm an amateur singer. I remember as a kid I practiced to be able to hold that note as long as he did. Finally made it!

Saw them live countless times. They sounded like this live. The harmonies between them were unbelievable. They're still performing in 2020.
I loved Air Supply and I grew up on R & B. Also keep in mind that in the 1980's Australia & England were the Epicenter of The Music Business. Besides Olivia Newton-John (Of Course) who was recently made a Dame by The Queen since she was born in Cambridge, England. They were one of many Groups to come out of Australia who were popular on US Soil besides them there was The Little River Band, INXS, Men At Work. Also keep in mind that Rick Springfield hit paydirt with Jesse's Girl and he was also on General Hospital as Dr. Noah Drake and Ingo Rademacher played Jax on the Show who did Lines With Megan Markle. Tristan Rogers also made a name for himself as Robert Scorpio . Also ABC hit Paydirt with The Thorn Birds which was next to Roots one of the most successful Miniseries on it's Network.

A girl I went to HS was always singing this song and we were always singing this in choir class. Tragically, she was killed in a car accident on the way to an early before school choir practice. Every time I hear an Air Supply song, I can’t help but think about her. RIP Sandy....

Chances is one of those hidden gems from the early days.
Chances is my absolute favorite song by Air Supply. I have been lucky enough to see them in concert a few times. I watched their concert on HBO/Showtime back in the 80s over and over and over and over.
Kathleen, Chances Kills me every time. More than their other hits. Love the smooth guitar solo....I know it’ll be hard, because they don’t tour frequently like they used to, but you gotta catch em when you can. You won’t be disappointed 🤘🏼

When I heard this song for the first time, I was in high school, and guys were wearing long sleeve, velour shirts and designer jeans. At least some of the guys, the other guys usually wore denim jackets with hand painted album covers on the back. Painted by a local artist major and painting of a favorite band, naturally. Most common were Queen "News of the World", Pink Floyd "The Wall", "Dark Side of the Moon", Led Zeppelin "Led Zeppelin", AC/DC "Highway to Hell", Boston "More than a feeling", KISS "Destroyer", Steve Miller "Book of Dreams", etc...
i was an 80's metal dude back in the day, still am.. but I was a closeted Air Supply fan.. how can you not be w/ the ballads they wrote.. even metalheads have hearts..
I couldn’t have said it any better that’s why this song still brings tears to my eyes today. I’m a prime example I had an absolutely gorgeous girl who loved me and was wrapped around my finger but I took her for granted and of course now she’s gone.
When I first met my late husband, we danced to this song. Listening to this song brought tears to my eyes. He passed last July and I miss him so much. Thank you for reacting to this song.

The thing about this song when it came out was the ability of that singer to hold that note at the end of the song. Amazing at the time.

Got kinda tired of hearing them back in the day because mom played the cassettes until they literally wore out... but now it brings back some really good memories of mom and me sitting on the porch singing at the top of our lungs... and we didn't care who heard.
Absolutely classic song writing. Carefully crafted, carefully sung. No singing around the notes and improvising all over the place. Incredibly good diction and melodic writing. So little of that today it seems.

Saw Air Supply several times at Mud Island in Memphis. The last time it was just the two of them with Graham Russell playing guitar. The harmonies were amazing! Talk about chills! Heterosexual is the word you're looking for. I agree with you. You can't unsay something. Sometimes it's better to say nothing.
The first "real" concert (as in an admission charge for the concert only) I ever went to was Air Supply! Back around the time this song was brand new...
Making Love Out Of Nothing At All, I think, is their best song. But they had a nice long string of #1 hits that any of them could be someone's clear favorite. I also believe it would make a great reaction video.

I saw Air Supply live a few years back, 35+ years after their heyday, and they still sounded just like the album. And in some cases, even better. It was sorcery. They're so good. And people joke about them being cheesy but that concert was packed out, soooooo.

As a kid, I went to private school and we were carpooled. One of the carpool kids LOVED this song and REO Speedwagon. We were not allowed to listen to secular music, and Kelly would listen to stuff by those bands during our commute. And her mother, one of the monitors, would let us!!! I felt like such a rebel! Lol

As for Air Supply, I was in high school when they were at the height of their popularity and I was a big fan. I work at a local amusement park with a concert venue. I had to work the night they performed. If I couldn't see them, I could at least hear them in person. I was on my way to my dinner break and was suddenly surrounded and buffeted around and stumbled and getting my toes stepped on as a group of people rushed past me. After they were past and I regained my balance, I realized...I'd just gotten run over by Air Supply!
It reminded me of the lead character in Supernatural breaking out and singing this song to the radio in the car, when he was supposed to be such a tough guy. Great writing.

Their style of music is similar to Savage Garden. Which if you are not familiar with them then I would recommend "Loved You Before I Met You" or "Truely Madly Deeply." I can remember the first time I heard "Truely Madly Deeply" I made a comment to a family member that that song would hit number one, and shortly after it did.

That was one band I couldn't get into back then. I don't know why they used to get in my nerves. I guess it was a teenage thing. I used to know a mean girl that loved them. He favorite song was "Making Love Out of Nothing At All" by Air Supply.
When I say mean girl she wrote the book and she used to bully me. She would say mean things then break out in an Air Supply song. She couldn't sing well neither.
Well we both have grown up and splited paths. I whish her well wherever she is. She may not even remember me. I forgot her name. I do offer up a prayer for her.
Anyway, I can't hear Air Supply without thinking of her. I only clicked on this because I knew you would say something that would have me rethink those negative emotions. At least I can have a new reference point.

I played Heat of the Moment on full blast cleaning the house one day and my 16 year old daughter busted out of her room and sang every word, dancing like a whirling dervish. Apparently it was featured on Supernatural. Smh

Um, if you've ever seen the movie "Groundhog Day" with Bill Murry, Supernatural did an episode with the "repeating the same day" theme with only one character being aware of it, and where "Groundhog Day" had him waking up every morning to Sunny and Cher's "I've Got You Babe", Supernatural used "Heat of the Moment" for it. And it was a Tuesday that got repeated. Tell your daughter "Dean would be proud".

40 years with my beautiful wife that stayed with me thru many deployments in the army.
I met them a few years back and you could not have asked for nicer people. They play small and large venues still and they even have a segment where they walk through the audience while playing songs. Very approachable team. Voices still hold up well.

I'm so old. Everything I listened to when I was almost grown LOL is an oldie. I liked the smoother stuff because I was surrounded by drama and crazies. I still like smooth pop songs more than metal ( nothing stronger than Donny Osmond lol ) it calms me down.
