    I'd known the song since childhood, but the meaning finally clicked as an adult when I found myself falling in love with my best friend. I was afraid to let him know and risk it not working out. Of course I eventually did. We've been married nearly fifteen years. Guess I was overthinking it a bit. I've always thought of this as our song.

    • @jessiem276
      @jessiem276 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's wonderful! Every guy I ever tried to be friends with, was always trying to date me.

    • @thegiddywitch
      @thegiddywitch 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@jessiem276 I've had more male friends than female, but in all other cases one of us wasn't interested in the other. Most often, neither of us was romantically interested in the other. Funniest thing is, my husband and I couldn't stand each other for about the first year after we met, but we worked too closely not to get to know each other. Turns out we had a lot of the same interests. So, against all odds, we eventually became best friends. Strange how things work out sometimes.

      Diana Young Love this! I was in love with my best friend for probably 8 years. Sadly, it was a one-sided love. He eventually got married to a wonderful person and they couldn’t be more perfect for each other. I love them & their kids like family.

    • @helgar8456
      @helgar8456 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. When most of us are young we feel love songs are sappy or silly because we haven't lived long enough to have our hearts broken. I mean really broken because you've loved something or someone beyond life, and then had it taken from you. Once that happens then you understand what love is and how honest most love songs are. Indeed at that point Emily Dickinson's words, "The heart wants what the heart wants" is never more true.

    If you like the piano, you need to check out Marc Cohn; "Walking in Memphis" is his huge hit that everybody knows (he has a lot of other great lesser-known songs, too - "True Companion" is a beautiful love song of his).

    Love this song!!funny thing is I had to write a report on his dad for a Sociological Study of a Minority Group, his dad was Daniel G Hill III, who was the son of an ordained minister with the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Daniel G Hill III did not like how African Americans were treated in the US, so he moved to Canada to study sociology and became a pioneer in human rights, prominent writer, and historian in the field of the history of Blacks in Canada

    This song saved me back in 1977. I worked at Fayva Shoes (my first job) after college and the manager played the most popular radio station, which only played disco, on the store's
    speakers. Then, almost like it was preordained to be a miracle before Christmas, the radio station played Dan Hill. When I'm a little down and need to think about something that I am grateful for...this song and this writer always comes to mind.

    I really enjoy this song; it came out in 1977 when I was 22 years old. I was unemplyed and living in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, and I damn-near cried the first time I heard it. Unfortunately for me, it also depressed me deeply because I had nobody to love or talk to at that time. But, HEY! That was over 40 years ago, and life really DOES get better if you hang in there! Thanks, Ty.

    One of the all-time best written, best sung, emotionally catchy songs I've ever heard. I got the chills watching you listen. I feel like anyone who missed out on the songs like this in the 70's (there are hundreds to catch up on), missed out on the most brilliant era to be a music lover. Quite a ride it was.

  • @dianahinzman4590
    @dianahinzman4590 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    My favorite since 1977. The 70’s were a lot of wonderful songs. High School Dances and football games. I was in grade 11. Another song I remember was Magnet and Steel. Then of course there was Petter Frampton. Disco was just starting to come out also.

    This is what is missing in todays radio...loved the 70's...listening to the radio at night before everybody went to bed. only like 3 stations so everyone in H.S. heard the same songs at night. These songs would inspire the love letters that would be gotten or given the next day at school.

    1977, I was 21 and in the army. A hard core rocker but this was a guilty pleasure. If it came on the radio we'd yell, "change the station!" but if I was in my car by myself you know it got cranked and I'd sing along at the top of my lungs! :-)

    I remember listening to this song on the radio. They had Canadian content rules back in the day ...
    Dan Hill's younger brother Lawrence wrote a book known as "Someone Knows My Name" in the USA because it's real title is deemed too controversial. Their father, Daniel G Hill, who was born in Missouri and came north right after he married, founded the Ontario Black History Society and wrote the book, The Freedom Seekers: Blacks in Early Canada.
    Dan Hill has a more recent song I am My Father's Son ...

    Love songs from the 70s was an era of the singer-song writer. A time of great music for those young people in love. High quality cheese for couples skating on a Friday/Saturday night. In our rink in Elkhart Indiana they would announce that couples skating was coming up. Boys and Girls would line up on opposite sides of the rink and when the love songs would start you would go and ask someone of your desire to skate while holding hands.

    Tracks like this always remind me of 60s/70s pop AM radio. Another great track like this is "Without You" by Harry Nilsson. It was covered in that same era by Air Supply and Badfinger. This song ... tear my heart out and throw it on the floor ! Another good one, At This Moment by Billy Vera and the Beaters.
    The backwards skate/couples skate song I remember most was I Go Crazy by Paul Davis. You should check his work out. Gone too soon, he was very talented. (Dan Fogelberg, too ! Leader of the Band is one you might like a lot, Ty.)

    I was a teen when this came out but I didn't realize how powerful this song was until I'd been in a long term relationship for 20 plus years. And yeah, how bout that piano?
