I bought Dragon of Icespire Peak and I had no idea this (or the other 2 mini-sequels) existed and are available for FREE if you bought the original adventure. Thanks Bob! You sum things up very well in your videos!
BTW, when i DM the DoIP, i've put the Velleen Elf-lady in the Stonehill's tavern looking out for a job, the players talked alot with her, and she even did a little bit of "exposure" about the religion of Talos. Great connection
The Myrkul connection to the Mere (Argus’s clothing was covered with seeds from plants there) could also be expanded to be the source of the rot trolls which have a necrotic energy about them.
As someone who knew about this expansion, forgot about it, then stumbled upon it again looking for a somewhat parallel plot line to Tyranny of Dragons for a smaller backup party, this guide is a life-saver. Well laid out as always, concise, and very informative. Thanks for the recommendations on quest order, too.
Reading through the Thunder Cliff quest, I think there are some changes I'd make to the sailing portion of the quest: I do not like the idea of the mutiny at all. Instead, I will have both captains involved. If the players choose to go with the dragonborne, he will do some culty stuff. The fight will likely destroy his galley and the tabaxi's ship will come to the rescue! If the players choose the tabaxi, then they will get attacked by the dragonborne! One or more of the crewmen will have the information in "Bad News." Also the invisible stalker doesn't make much sense to me. Maybe 3-4 Manticores.
Great changes. I totally agree about the mutiny. D&D ship travel has the same problem as Sci-Fi movies and Cryosleep- you KNOW it’s going to go wrong. I think unmaking use of both captains is a better solution 👍🏻
I used this quest as inspiration for my homebrew world. Right now, the party is going to a mage tower to figure out who the necromancer is, along with getting magic items. I'm gonna have Grymm, the necromancer, his wizard followers, zombies, and the zombie hill giant they faced in the shrine of savras quest. And its a small space. Hope they will have fun.
My party is almost done with DoIP and ready for the expansions. I used DoIP to setup the sandbox of the Sword Coast. Eventually players can go as far north as icewind Dale and south as buldar's gate and east as silvery moon. I've been building this sandbox for over a year. Glad my players are my wife and kids
I'm super excited to run this expansion once our group is done with DoIP! Thank you so much for the guides, they really help and I've used them a lot with my sessions! Love ya, Bob! Keep going strong!
Thanks for this, Bob! I've used your advice for DoIP to good effect and am looking to continue the adventure with these, so I'm very glad you've chosen to cover them! Keep it coming :)
Thanks for the write up. My players definitely made this interesting for me. At thunder cliffs my party decided to sneak by the cultist spies in section 2 , then killed all the scouts in section 5. Then the PCs decided they were going to use the blowhole until something happened just because i rolled each time they stepped into it. most got lucky and went to waterdeep but 2 ended up in the water plane. it took them a in game week to regroup and are now headed back, and since the cultists found the bodies in section 5 and realized someone was able to sneak in, this area will need to have enhanced defenses.
I didn't know about these until THIS WEEK and I've had the DOIP since Christmas. Right when I was gonna ask you do make a DM guide, boom you happened to do it this very week
Hey Bob! I'm really happy to see you going in on your channel! I've used your videos for prep for a while now, running a few groups through the essentials kit. I was so relieved to find you're starting on the add-on adventures! Cheers buddy
Thanks Bob for your short 10-minute or less "DM Guides" to all of the adventures in the DoIP series. I had already been thinking of offering my adventurers the opportunity to rent Giant Goats from Barthen's Provisions in DoIP as riding mounts for travel or as pack animals ... and it sounds like this will tie in great and explain Pinchwit's visit in SLW.
Great stuff as always! Here are a few other things I'll be adding to my campaign. First, our crew didn't get to the Tower of Storms in DOIP, so I'm definitely going to steer them that direction at the start of this adventure on their way to Leilon from Phandalin by having brooding black unnatural skies on the horizon. Since the Spellplague is actually necessary knowledge to understand what happened to Leilon, I added some History / Arcana checks for them to know more past "Something bad happened 100 years ago". With a DC 18 they will know that the Spellplague was the result of Mystra dying and this has caused some competition amongst the gods, which is possibly why there is an increased presence of both Talos and Myrkul right now. I thought it was weird that there was literally zero reward for completing the House of Thalivar quest. Yes, the experience is awesome, but the party could potentially be fighting some seriously tough baddies. As a reward I decide that Gallio Elibro will let them have one free use of his Legend Lore spell, and the frightened soldiers will share a few of their health potions and healer's kits if the party didn't steal any already. The Thunder Cliffs Quest is so big! I divided it into two quests - one called "Out to Sea" and the other "Thunder Cliffs". I decided to make Captain Kristoffen try to poison the party at dinner the first night at sea if they choose him. Also changed the sea and air enemies the party encounters as they get closer to the shore of the cliffs. Instead of an invisible stalker and giant crab, they'll face 2 Manticores and a Giant Octopus with some legendary "Kraken-ish" actions.
Thank you! Yes, I started with Dragon of Icespire Peak because I was really excited about it, and people like it! So I’ll be making them for more modules in the future 😊
Bob World Builder I have had a look at the pre made characters on roll20 and it’s something I have never done. What’s your opinion on using pre made characters
I think pre-made characters are great for completely new players. You can present them with a few options and let them choose, then dive right into the game, and they learn as they go. After several sessions when the players have a better handle on the rules, they can always make their own character. That said, when I first played, we all made are own characters as a group and we had no idea what we were doing but it was still a ton of fun and we learned as the campaign went on
In Phandalin, I just had the brief appearance of Argus at the Stonehill Inn trigger the three way fight. The party chased him and they essentially stumbled on a showdown between the two cults. I didn’t wait for them to leave town for it happen. Also, while the module says Skeel can be chased to a nearby building there is no map or much detail so I did it differently.
Something that came up when I was playing DOIP - when the PCs went to the Tower of Storms (at 3rd level), they wanted to check out Leilon as well. It was an interesting challenge to try hinting at some of the things of Leilon without giving anything away (especially Gallio).
Yeah, between Leilon and Neverwinter, there are plenty of things on the map to tease the players that DoIP isn't really meant to cover. Good job keeping them interested without giving anything away :)
@@BobWorldBuilder Thanks! Storm Lord's Wrath has been interesting to run. I ended up adding a dungeon in Leilon, as the PCs were looking for a good dungeon crawl. I looked up some lore on Leilon, and I found this about a part of historical Leilon: Manyclaws Alley - This dangerous place was thought to be haunted by the ghosts of some trolls, but in reality it was haunted by nine heucuva. The alley was all that remained of a temple to Loviatar that was demolished long ago. The undead guarded the treasure that was still buried beneath the alley in forgotten vaults, unknown by the people of Leilon. So I made a dungeon of the remains of an ancient temple deep below the city. It was pretty intense!
@@BobWorldBuilder I had Aubrey Silverspun give them job, framing it as hiring them to find treasures for his shop. In truth, (SPOILERS) he, as one of the Swords of Leilon, is testing them to take over his watch of the town.
@@BobWorldBuilder A player took max damage from the wraith's life drain and instantly died. My very first player death as a DM! Other than that, the attack on wayside inn went fine.
Wow, oh no! Wraiths are pretty dangerous, but I assume they must have been weakened in the battle first? In any case, depending on what the party did with their fallen friend's body, you could totally have it come back as a powerful undead later in the one of the other adventures!
Thank you so much for this. I am finishing Icespire Hold and laying the seeds for this module with my group tonight. You probably have answered this a million times already, but are you planning to release DM guides for the other two expansion adventures?
Sounds great! And yes I have, and yes I do! The next one will be the first video of September, but the third is not scheduled yet. Good luck with Icespire Hold :)
@@BobWorldBuilder I read through all three beyond icespirepeak adventures and they are all really good. NPC development could be a video topic idea or how to introduce some NPCs earlier.
@@BobWorldBuilder I ran Phandelin with Icespire peak at the same time and did not read Beyond icespirepeak until too late to insert foreshadowing. Spoiler alert. The spirit of the dead black dragon Chardansearavitriol should be at risk of entering many of the dragons along the way like Venom Fang and Cryovain. Atleast let the players know dead or alive some bad dragon spirit may poses them, teh corpse at dragon barrow as well. They all become more interesting. Atleast the players should be aware that this spirit is out there before the assault on The dragon Claugiyliamatar. The names Ularan Mortus and Fheralai Stormsworm should be mentioned by characters in Icepsire peak and or the Lost Mines.
My party encountered the Yuan-Ti who won initiative and cast fear - the whole party failed their saving throws and they all fled. They could hear the Yuan-ti laughing and continuing to eat their dinner as they all ran away. LOL!
Hey Bob, I've began running this campaign and have read through all 3 of the extension modules. The thing that really has me stumped is how to introduce the two cults as the BBEGs here, as especially the necromancer just seems to be around, but not really given any context until end of module 2. Unless I straight up get a character to tell them the deal, I don't see how the module sets anything up.
You’re right that SLW doesn’t include much of the undead cult. It’s mainly about the “Storm Lord,” but About half of the encounters are solving problems caused by the cults. SLW begins with branded zombies attacking the inn, then cultists of Talos attacking Leilon, then culminates in stopping a storm ritual and infiltrating the storm lord cult headquarters. I think there’s a lot in place already, so you could take out the non-cult quests to really keep it focused
I found it weird that the Leilon map shows all the buildings already built, but they expect you to show it to the party when they first get there? I'd rather a couple maps showing various stages of construction what do you think?
Totally agree. Some are in disrepair, but it wouldn’t have been *that* difficult for them to have slightly different Leilon maps for the three adventures
@@BobWorldBuilder yeah exactly, apart from a couple holes in roofs that town is nearly completed 😂 ah well the power of imagination! I'll deffo be rewatching this, I'm running this for my players soon and it's a bit more prep work to get my head around compared to icespire peak! Kinda wish they'd have been book form too I seem to take info in better with a book than on a screen but that's just me
Various stages would be nice -- unsure exactly what the layout will be as the post DOISP trilogy progresses... but it didn't stop my party from building a coffee shop near the fishery!
I think that in later adventures (Divine Contetion at least) the map is more completed. So there are various stages already present. The map in Storm Lord's Wrath is Stage 1
When the party finally located the lizard folk camp, the impulsively attacked them but so had the rot trolls enter soon which prevented a slaughter. One of the flail snail’s stunning brilliance froze the rot trolls for a turn or two giving the party valuable time to establish an alliance with the lizardfolk and make a strategic positioning. Their earlier impulsivity made that difficult. The wise lizard chief was JUST able to control his angry people. Good drama.
I gave my players a property awarded to them for defeating Cryovain that is in Leilon from Harbin Wester. I had Tibor Wester move to Leilon as a head of some of the builders. We just finished the Tower, which my players wanted to do at night, so it meant that the ghost had possessed Galio. Actually had set up earlier with one player a plot hook based on his character's background which included an item "letter from an old friend" made the letter be from Thalivar as a ghost. That player knows the real reason for what was found using the planar beacon, because of how we worked his story into it. He'll probably help with rebuilding the tower. Another player is wanting to turn their property into a hotel/bar. The others are barbarians with religious sides (one a zealot, one a multiclass paladin) so don't have too much interest in the town yet, but hoping to get something going with replacing or supplementing the religion there already. So hoping this involvement in the town will make them more invested in the future in the later adventures
That’s all awesome! I really like your idea of awarding them land in Leilon. Of course it gets them there, and they’ll have a reason to protect this new town! And nice job finding ways to weave their character motivations into the reconstruction. I look forward to hearing more!
I love the idea of relocating Harbin Wester -- my party is trying to finance construction projects with him with the Shrine of Savras bell-income; but they're corresponding over distance. Bringing him to Leilon totally makes sense, wish I had thought of it!
My party had a hard time on the foul weather at Wayside Inn quest, but they pulled through. The tied up innkeeper had to break herself out when they fought in the basement. She drew aggro and helped the party win, but was knocked unconscious in the last round. The party was disorganized as they tried to help their fallen party members and she succumbed to her wounds (causing some good inter-party conflict as they wrestle with consequences) I would recommend to be VERY clear that the party can pray to talos to try to protect from the lightening. Even with the hints set up by the book, my party didn't even consider it. I think the real trick should be a moral conflict, praying to the evil god, as opposed to whether or not the players understand that they can try. Maybe play that up and describe the influence it has on the characters psyche afterwards! If a character refuses to pray and takes a lot of damage as a result, maybe give them a point of inspiration for roleplaying the character sticking to their guns.
i am starting a mix of LMoP and DoIP for first tier and i prepared two directions for next SKT in Triboar or SLW in Leilon you are tempting me now but i guess it will be players call at least ill be ready for both. thanks
So happy you are finally to the expansions to DoIP! I have been waiting as my campaign is finally taking on the dragon next week! I do wonder if you ever may go back and do the side quests for the campaign, such Falcon's Hunting lodge and it's quests like the Woodland Manse?
@@BobWorldBuilder sorry, you are totally right. I meant tower of storms, and I completely missed that episode! I followed your tips before every session, and it helped so much. Keep it up! And stay safe during these troubling times.
Great video! My party just completed "missing patrol" and is about to start Thalivar's quest -- would welcome thoughts on how to run this one, as it seems a little tricky -- many important points hidden in inaccessible areas (a week of digging?) I suspect I'll allow enough space in the rubble for my party's wild shape druid to "cat" his way in to the room holding the journal! For those running a party of four-or-fewer like I am, I'd recommend running only one water elemental in the first "save Leilon" adventure. Totally echo Bob on omitting thunder bolt bracers in Wayside Inn. Lastly, in an attempt to add some story spice into the missing patrol adventure, I had private Jessup be an unwilling member of the "Sons of Alagondar" -- with Neverember's representatives quietly asking if he plans on pressing his possibly legitimate claim to the Alagondar line back in Neverwinter. Already a member of the Neverwinter guard, he declined, saying he'd have no part in pressing his claim. Quickly reassigned to Leilon, Sgt. Yorrum then sends him to the swamp, where he mysteriously disappears... Kind of a spurious story invention, but seemed to add a little more drama to Leilon. My only concern now is how the rest of the trilogy treats Yorrum... was it a mistake making him slightly villainous, I wonder?
I’ll keep an eye out for how Yorrum is treated in the other modules because I like the idea! Also the rubble part in Thalivar’s tower doesn’t ring a bell... if that was to get into his room, there’s also the memory-wiping window entrance. I would use appearances of the ghost or giving the party a chance to follow Gallio’s possessed body, to lead them to the room with the journal, the fey servant’s body, or even Thalivar’s body of the party gets stumped
@@BobWorldBuilder Thanks! I ran the House of Thalivar the other day, and it went pretty well, read out follows. A member of my party with an affinity for fey uncovered Soapwort's body on the first floor, which immediately drew the party's attention (but only after a lot of complaining about how bad the Neverwinter guard were -- missing patrols, and now this?!!! :) ) Using queues from the random roll table, I threw in several spooky effects as they investigated the library). The party found Thalivar's body with little difficulty -- immediately after which I had my party hear pitter patter behind them, but when they turned to look they only found hand prints up and over the edge (purple ink), leading into the room with the journal below. I cheated (I think) and made the room reachable via the scaffolding, but kept the "turn around and forget" saving throw at the room's threshhold (2 of my 4 were denied entry). Upon reading the handout and seeing mention of the ruinstone -- and the more recent entries -- my party all said "aha!" ... putting Gallio's pieces together and the need for funeral rites. Interestingly, they also attributed the "turn around" effect to the ruinstone, which they assumed was still buried in the rubble near Thalivar's room. Am now looking at Aid From Phandalin... which perhaps should have been named Aid FOR Phandalin! :) Welcome lessons-learned for this one!
@@BobWorldBuilder I don't mean to monopolize space here, and though I welcome comments, please do not feel compelled to respond -- completely understand that everybody's fighting the ticking clock in one form or another! If OK, I'm using this space to annotate my encounters, in the hope it helps folks (guides for this supplement are pretty rare, I think!) Below is a readout of the first half of Aid from Phandalin (i.e. giant goat herding!) My wildshape druid loved picking up a new animal for his list of animals (can be found in D&D Beyond's home brew!) For character flavor, I had the goatherd use Mongolian-style throat singing to herd the goats (a combination of deep humming and low whistling, great documentaries out there for those interested!) My party passed their animal handling checks for the wyverns, and were kind of disappointed that they didn't get to fight them. For the Ogre attack, my players on watch that night failed their check, and nodded off at the campfire. The party all awoke with a start to the goats bleating in alarm as the Ogres ran off with giant goats tucked under each arm -- and the chase was on! (First I've ever run) Based on a TH-cam video on chases offered from our friends in the UK, I made it skill-based rather than the type found in the DM guide. I did this by simply drawing 3 lines in front of the characters on the map in Roll20 -- with the Ogres in front of the hash marks to the left -- and then drew 3 lines behind the characters. I had the players choose their favored skills on each round, based on initiative, and then checked them (DC 10). If they succeeded, then they had to describe how this skill allowed them to move one line closer to the Ogres. If they failed, they moved one line back. The idea is that once a player reaches the Ogres, then the battle begins, with each other member of the party joining the battle however many rounds later, based on their location on the lines drawn. While my players seemed to enjoy the change of pace, I made a mistake by setting the DC so low -- would suggest maybe DC 15 at the lowest. All my players crossed the finish line at the same time, which kind of took away from the suspense. Still, it was pretty fun! Will be trying the 3-sided fight next time -- and would welcome your thoughts on how best to run that!
Just finished off the second-half of Aid from Phandalin today -- took my group two sessions (about 1 1/2 hrs apiece). They really spent a long time trying to find the two no-goods in town, which forced me into a few uncomfortable spots trying improvise small details that would allow the 3-sided battle to take place (details like invented rumors about strange men seen around Edermath's orchard late at night, etc.) My players seemed genuinely surprised by the 3-sided battle at the end, and though we had fun playing it, I'm not quite sure I did it right -- battle took about an hour and a half. I had the two enemy parties charge at eachother, with the party caught in the middle -- for those not engaged in the battle, I automatically had each kobald/ghoul deal 10 damage to each other. My party's warlock did a great job with crowd control via area-based tentacles. The group was also pretty surprised by the vampire (not really realizing what it was until it bit!) In hindsight, I wish I had focused on "thorns" in the swamp during the "Missing Patrol" quest so my group could immediately recognize their importance as it related to the vampire. Welcome thoughts on how to manage a 3-sided fight a little more quickly!
Hi Bob! I wanted to ask you, will you be uploading gameplay for this followup games after the dragon of icespire peak? My players and I are about to finish the main campaign and they have real strong feelings about Talos (roleplay in the circle of thunder and tower of storms was really really fun), so we're definitely gonna play Storm Lord's wrath, and your games are always really fun and helpful! Thank you in advance! For real, your content is amazing
Hey Luis, thank you so much! No gameplay videos planned for these quests because Grace and I have not actually played through them. I plan to do some kind of session summary videos for Frostmaiden which we will be playing, and maybe the illustrated gameplays for LMoP because that module is relatively short.
First of all, thanks for all the videos on DoIP and now the follow-up adventures. The DoIP is my group's first ever campaign, my first experience as a DM and your videos helped A LOT. Now, my question: right now (we play-by-post) the group is having a conversation with an envoy from Lord Neverember at Phandalin's tavern. They're asking for details of Leilon and the region, as well as how much coin is being offered, etc. Even though this exactly what the firs hook suggests, I'm thinking of offering them another hook at the same time: spying for waterdeep. I thought about the spy envoy meeting them and being aware of lord neverember's proposition, but they would try to offer the spy job still, asking the players to play real double-agents. So what do you think, would you have any suggestions on how to pull this one off? Even though I think it will be much fun, it would mean be a bit more work for me :D
I one game we're using roll20. After a few sessions, it's not so bad. Players just click names on their sheets, but the DM does have more work to do as far as preparing maps goes. BUT in our other game, Grace is the DM so she has Google Meet (I think we use Google Hangouts in that game actually) running on her laptop, and I join on my phone to use as a "battle cam" showing our dry erase grid and minis
Would have been nice they placed wayside inn on the LMOP map, so that you don't need to say to players that make trips between Phandalen and Neverwinter. "Oh there's an inn at the crossroads, you've walked past numerous times and not even noticed it."
You can tell Bob's from Waterdeep because he pronounces it lay-LON instead of LIE-lon 😜Sorry, it's a running gag in my game that the locals can tell where someone is from by how they mispronounce it since everyone always pronounces it differently
Love your videos! I am running an LMoP + DoIP adventure now and want to use storm lords wrath to move on after. I am trying to find a hook here with Cryovain being intentionally released by Talos or Myrkul disciples for some reason and Cryovain takes over Icespire Peak. Any thoughts on this to help connect the two? My party was tricked into releasing Cryovain in the first scenario and I would love to link that to this.
Since the Myrkul cult leader is eyeing other dragons, that could work! Why not release a yougn dragon, hope some adventures kill it, then resurrect it as a servant after they do the hard work?
Are you planning on coming back to SLW in your video series (or did I miss it that you covered the whole module)? Just finishing DOIP and reading through this adventure online and making notes to weave into my off-the-script storyline. The discussions in the comments for your DOIP series of videos were very interesting and good DM fodder. I was hoping for more of the same for SLW.
These three expansion quests (SLW, SDW, DC) just have these more general overviews and I don't have plans to revisit them. I personally wanted to move on to a new module, and while they are interesting, I know I'm able to help more people by focusing on more popular modules
So I own both the Starter Set & Essentials Kit, and I've been using your very useful guide on combining the two. Doing a bit of scoping out the expansions. You say this is free with a download code in the essentials kit? Could you please point me in the direction of where I need to look for this code, as I've not come across it.
Will you be doing this for all the expansions? Cause just checked the monster stat blocks of SLEEPING DRAGON’S WAKE and there is this massive dragon on it Z_Z
I bought the essentials kit and i'm having a blast for now. Too bad that since the expansions haven't been officially translated to spanish i didn't get the codes on my kit, so i have to pay to get them. I still will though
how did you get the clean map, and the separate labels to show up like that ? I need to figure out a similar setup for my online group's map... thanks for the video
I downloaded the DM map and the unlabeled player version from D&D Beyond, and using them in separate layers in an image editing program, I erased the spaces over the labels one at a time to make a bunch of images showing the progression 👍🏻
finished Doip as the Dm and I can say if you dont mind doing bits of rewriting or tweeking I honestly enjoyed this a lot more than Lost mines, maybe its just I prefer sandbox games but even my players have been pleasantly suprised how much they enjoyed it despite its reputation as the "worse of the phandelver games." and I honestly cant imagine why unless your Dm is a wierdo that sticks to every letter of a model and thus incapable of weaving their own story into a great framework.
Im plannig on running these expansions as a extention to lmop rather than ice spire peak. I will have the players fight cryovien as vemon fang made a deal with the party to "retreive his lair" obviously lying and will double cross the party when cryovien is low health or as they drop. They will be level 7 by that point. Then level the party inline with the expansions.
First, I didn't actually notice many issues with this adventure! Now at level 7, improper balance isn't as deadly, but I've pointed out a few areas where the party faces several encounters back-to-back. And no, as I mentioned in the Icespire Hold guide, Grace and I aren't playing through all of these quests first. In order to keep each of these three adventures to their own (watchable) video, I focused on the story connections with more general suggestions for DMs.
*I think* that the PCs technically are meant to be at level six when finishing DoIP, and completing it gets them to level 7, but if your party ends up with a gap level, I recommend asking the party what they would like to do for a one-off adventure!
@@BobWorldBuilder Wouw! I just found the one pager. I never looked at the flip side of the "welcome adventurer" paper! Thanks again, for your help and response to my questions here.
Do you mean how to engage your players in the worldbuilding part of DMing? If that’s the case, it’s best to have them flesh out the backgrounds of their characters and any NPCs or factions connected to their character
@@BobWorldBuilder we finished DOIP already and starting with SLW now, but i want the PCs to purchase or build their own businesses as part of the reconstruction of Leilon. Hopefully to have them engage more. But I dont know how to manage or begin the process of letting them buy a house and its upkeep.
You may be able to find some tables online, but the Dungeon Masters Guide has some info on that, and I recently reviewed a DMs Guild supplement all about it! Check out my Builder's Guild playlist if you're interested. The video is 'family love and food in D&D'
so I've noticed that my players have decided that aid from Phandalin isn't worth there time has it is shown as a goat herding mission. and i quote a player "this is some level one s**t not interested"
At face value, they're not wrong! I would bring it up again in a session or two, from one of the council members explaining that they tried to send some other townspeople, but they were attacked by wyverns/ogres and had to retreat. Furthermore, I would increase the number of ghouls under control of the Myrkul cultist there or have some other consequence for the party not stopping those Phandalin cultists sooner.
@@BobWorldBuilder I was trying to find the gold value of the request but can't find anything anywhere. This module seems to be not as reward focused as the main campaign. It mainly you should do this as it the right thing to do haha.

SO great how you condensed such key info in such a short and understandable video! Kudos!
Glad you enjoyed it! :)
Reading through the Thunder Cliff quest, I think there are some changes I'd make to the sailing portion of the quest:
I do not like the idea of the mutiny at all. Instead, I will have both captains involved. If the players choose to go with the dragonborne, he will do some culty stuff. The fight will likely destroy his galley and the tabaxi's ship will come to the rescue! If the players choose the tabaxi, then they will get attacked by the dragonborne!

Also the invisible stalker doesn't make much sense to me. Maybe 3-4 Manticores.
Great changes. I totally agree about the mutiny. D&D ship travel has the same problem as Sci-Fi movies and Cryosleep- you KNOW it’s going to go wrong. I think unmaking use of both captains is a better solution 👍🏻
Great guide. When my players will ever make it this way I will definitely re-watch this...
Or just put it in their way now! The location is pretty flexible 👍🏻
@@BobWorldBuilder still heading to the castle in search of the black spider....
That's awesome! There better be a big door somewhere for the hill giant to have gotten inside haha
Thank you, Gabriel! I’m so glad to here you’ve been enjoying the series and finding these guides helpful :)
Thanks for this, Bob! I've used your advice for DoIP to good effect and am looking to continue the adventure with these, so I'm very glad you've chosen to cover them! Keep it coming :)
You’re welcome! That’s good to hear. Really wasn’t sure how many people planned to run these expansions, so I’m glad you’re finding it helpful :)
Honestly, perfect timing. Perfect timing.
Thank you! :)
At your service! 😁
Hey Bob! I'm really happy to see you going in on your channel! I've used your videos for prep for a while now, running a few groups through the essentials kit. I was so relieved to find you're starting on the add-on adventures! Cheers buddy
I really appreciate your encouragement! Yes, these expansion adventure guides were highly requested, and it’s great material so I’m happy to help :)
Your videos for icespire were so lovely - looking forward to seeing these
A series on guiding DMs through established modules? Very cool!
Thank you! Yes, I started with Dragon of Icespire Peak because I was really excited about it, and people like it! So I’ll be making them for more modules in the future 😊
Ah for some reason I was thinking Storm kings Thunder.
Yes! I think this is an easy mix up so I've made sure to lead with that in clarification in my Reddit posts because I forgot to mention it here :P
Looking to start DoIP in a few weeks and your videos are helping me prep a lot ! This Video just makes me more excited for whats to come after DoIP
Glad to hear it! Yes, these expansions are great, and you're going to love Icespire Peak!
I looked up some lore on Leilon, and I found this about a part of historical Leilon:
Manyclaws Alley - This dangerous place was thought to be haunted by the ghosts of some trolls, but in reality it was haunted by nine heucuva.
@@Aligariusful That sounds like an awesome addition to the town!! If I manage to record a video about Leilon, I'll definitely include that info :D
@@BobWorldBuilder I had Aubrey Silverspun give them job, framing it as hiring them to find treasures for his shop. In truth, (SPOILERS) he, as one of the Swords of Leilon, is testing them to take over his watch of the town.
Whoa, I guess I missed that! Where do they talk about the identities of the Swords of Leilon?
Thank you for all of your videos Bob, you're extremely helpful
I really appreciate that. Thank you for the support! :)
Thanks for the vid! I’m starting this with my players tomorrow. Looking forward to it. Great content as always 👍🏻👍🏻
Have fun! I'm happy to help :)
Great timing, we are actually starting this adventure TODAY!
Woo! Feel free to share how it goes! :)
@@BobWorldBuilder I warned my players that level 6+ isn't play time anymore with monsters haha
Good luck with Icespire Hold :)
your breakdowns are the best!
Thank you! I really appreciate the support. This one was a challenge!
@@BobWorldBuilder I read through all three beyond icespirepeak adventures and they are all really good. NPC development could be a video topic idea or how to introduce some NPCs earlier.
That's a great idea! Thank you :)
I am so going to add this to the metaplot in my sword coast and the North Mega sandbox campaign.
Do it! This is a great bunch of quests that I absolutely plan to rehash for homebrew games :)
Kinda wish they'd have been book form too I seem to take info in better with a book than on a screen but that's just me
That being said, I really like the map. The angle of it is a cool way to show how there is a kinda focus on the harbor area.
I ran all of SLW, SDW, and DC. There is a LOT of work that needs to be done to make it better. A lot of it is pretty bad, but some of it is good.
Good to know! Do you have any pointers for SDW and DC that I should look out for?
Just one question, can we get those "sea horses"? 😄
See, wouldn’t it have been a cooler if they were straight up riding giant watery seahorses instead of silly LAND horses?
My party had a hard time on the foul weather at Wayside Inn quest, but they pulled through. The tied up innkeeper had to break herself out when they fought in the basement. She drew aggro and helped the party win, but was knocked unconscious in the last round. The party was disorganized as they tried to help their fallen party members and she succumbed to her wounds (causing some good inter-party conflict as they wrestle with consequences)
I would recommend to be VERY clear that the party can pray to talos to try to protect from the lightening.
Yes, any guidance here will go a long way!
i am starting a mix of LMoP and DoIP for first tier and i prepared two directions for next SKT in Triboar or SLW in Leilon you are tempting me now but i guess it will be players call at least ill be ready for both. thanks
That sounds great! This guide will be here if you need it! :)
Just posted this video to my combined group.

So happy you are finally to the expansions to DoIP! I have been waiting as my campaign is finally taking on the dragon next week! I do wonder if you ever may go back and do the side quests for the campaign, such Falcon's Hunting lodge and it's quests like the Woodland Manse?
Thank you! And every location except Falcon’s lodge has been covered at this point. Woodland Manse is episode 9 :)
@@BobWorldBuilder sorry, you are totally right. I meant tower of storms, and I completely missed that episode! I followed your tips before every session, and it helped so much. Keep it up! And stay safe during these troubling times.
No worries, thank you for watching and commenting :)
Ooh I love the inky hand prints clue! That is creepy but totally a fun hint at what's going on. Well done! :)
@@BobWorldBuilder I don't mean to monopolize space here, and though I welcome comments, please do not feel compelled to respond -- completely understand that everybody's fighting the ticking clock in one form or another! If OK, I'm using this space to annotate my encounters, in the hope it helps folks (guides for this supplement are pretty rare, I think!) Below is a readout of the first half of Aid from Phandalin (i.e. giant goat herding!)
My wildshape druid loved picking up a new animal for his list of animals (can be found in D&D Beyond's home brew!) For character flavor, I had the goatherd use Mongolian-style throat singing to herd the goats (a combination of deep humming and low whistling, great documentaries out there for those interested!) My party passed their animal handling checks for the wyverns, and were kind of disappointed that they didn't get to fight them.
When I first read through this campaign I was like meh..but you make it more exciting!
That's really awesome to hear :D thank you!
Liking and commenting on each! Sorry I'm late to the party! Going to have my newbies put you into rotation.
Better late than never!
Well done!
Awesome video Bob! Due to Covid-19, my DoIP game us currently on hold. I was excited to run this but I don't know when we'll get time to play again :/
Thank you, Roshni! If you have reliable internet, Google Meet could be a solution. That’s what my groups have been using :)
@@BobWorldBuilder i will try my hand at it. How are you running encounters? Roll20 has a steep learning curve to figure out
I one game we're using roll20.
@@BobWorldBuilder thats an awesome idea. Thanks!

7:52 "I drink the horse" - the barbarian
The art of the sea hags isn't new. It is actually in waterdeep: dungeon of the mad mage.
Dang! That is disappointing! Then the only new art *might* be the helmet with lightning bolts and the Myrkul skull
@@BobWorldBuilder I think those are presented in sword coast adventurers guide. Not sure about that tho
@@navidryanrouf441 They are!

Will you be doing this for all the expansions? Cause just checked the monster stat blocks of SLEEPING DRAGON’S WAKE and there is this massive dragon on it Z_Z
I will! It's been a long break for Icepire Peak content, but the SDW video will be coming on 9/2, and yes we will talk about that dragon! haha
@@BobWorldBuilder thanks !
No problem!
Is there a way to print out this module? I prefer to have paper to run off, not using my laptop. How many pages is it?
finished Doip as the Dm and I can say if you dont mind doing bits of rewriting or tweeking I honestly enjoyed this a lot more than Lost mines, maybe its just I prefer sandbox games but even my players have been pleasantly suprised how much they enjoyed it despite its reputation as the "worse of the phandelver games." and I honestly cant imagine why unless your Dm is a wierdo that sticks to every letter of a model and thus incapable of weaving their own story into a great framework.
Then level the party inline with the expansions.
question: would it be possible to play this without playing DoIP?
Did you run this adventure? I don't see any of your usual analysis of adventure problems or issues.
Where were the giant goats during Icespire Peak?
In Leilon apparently haha, though it’s not clear where this ranch of hundreds of giant goat actually is in Leilon so who knows??
So, Dragons of Icespire Peak ends at 6, but this is recommended for level 7. Do they offer any recommendations or suggestions for bridging that gap?
*I think* that the PCs technically are meant to be at level six when finishing DoIP, and completing it gets them to level 7, but if your party ends up with a gap level, I recommend asking the party what they would like to do for a one-off adventure!
@@BobWorldBuilder I was looking at the milestones incorrectly. Thank you!
Hi Bob,
Wouw! I didn't know about these expansions!
Where can I find the download codes? And how do I get the free expension?
Hey, happy to help! If you bought the actual box set, there should be an advertisement paper inside with download codes.
@@BobWorldBuilder Wouw! I just found the one pager. I never looked at the flip side of the "welcome adventurer" paper! Thanks again, for your help and response to my questions here.
My pleasure :)
any recommendations how to have a world building business with the PCs? newbie DM here playing for my officemates
Will you play through it and make a video?
I don't like D&D beyond, do I have to use it to play these extended scenarios?
Pretty much, yes. Unfortunately they are not available in print (as far as I know).
Thanks for the info
hi Devin. The modules are available on Fantasy Grounds, if that's the software your group uses to play. (and therefore would have all the text)
Lol we finised last Week xD
Awesome! Hope you all survived!
so I've noticed that my players have decided that aid from Phandalin isn't worth there time has it is shown as a goat herding mission. and i quote a player "this is some level one s**t not interested"
@@2dividedby3 The fun solution is to offer them a giant goat or two as payment :)
@@BobWorldBuilder that a hard nope already had a incident where a player tried to steal a goat from falcons Lodge long story
Haha wow, I’m surprised they didn’t jump on this opportunity then xD Let me know if they end up doing this quest!
Why is your background music country music? Its a weird choice for a D&D show.
