Vocal Coach REACTS - Devin Townsend 'Why'

- Why Indeed? Because it's Devin Townsend that's why! I really need to give this tune a second listen I don't think I caught all lyrics, that said I was very much entertained by Devin's antics and vocals. He straddles multiple styles throughout the song which i find very impressive - I think I need some lessons from him on how to master the "musical theatre Fry-scream"

It's impossible to listen to Devin Townsend without smiling
So true! I'm a new fan and I smile every time I hear him! Even watching him grinding coffee could be entertaining! He's the kind of weirdo I cherish
Devin townsend is my favorite princess disney , this men is unbealivable and crazy.....!
I'd vote for disney to make a movie about "her", lol xD
XD Excellent!
I second this.
not to forget, he´s also unbelievable and crazy!
Yes, 3 dollars 40
Yes, it’s a controller, the Quarantine show before this he had a camera on a Kitchen Aid mixer🤣🤣🤣🤣. This is at his home in Canada. He streams on Twitch which is a treat as well. These Quarantine Shows were all done as benefits for hospitals, the NHS in the UK, etc. He’s doing another show on StageIt on Dec 23rd, all acoustic. Love this guy
Ohhh, I'll have to find him on Twitch!
@@MicheleNicole He’s such a good guy, he plays clips of things he’s working on and generally hangs out, he’s a good watch. He also does podcasts where he discusses his previous albums and where he was in his life and his state of mind. You can find them on his YT Channel. 👍🏻
@@wtglb Thank you.
"Why" has even greater impact when heard on Empath, its album, as it's immediately preceded by the extreme metal and all fry and growl vocals of "Hear Me". The contrast to this Disney musical theater outlier is an amazing enhancer. Empath is actually a great intro to Devin Townsend, for a studio album - it's his latest and it manages to capture the breadth of what DT does in a single package. And like a nesting doll, he does that again in a single song, the opener Genesis, which just got an official live video... hint ))). Even if you don't make a video of it, please do yourself a favor and check out Empath on your own - it's an experience!
Empath is a sum up of Devin's personality and capability, Empath is EPIC!
The first time I heard the album, I honestly thought that there'd been a mistake at the pressing plant. The death metal of 'Hear Me' followed by this? It wasn't until I heard the vocals that I realised that it was 'Why?'
His voice at the end had me laughing out loud, it was so glorious.
These quarantine concerts had a lot of laughs and some cool deep cuts. His 3 shows are on his TH-cam channel. This was from the first of his concerts he performed from his kitchen.
For the first 2 shows, he used the Xbox controllers to change camera angles. Some angles had effects preapplied. In his second show, he attached a contraption to his kitchen mixer as a "head banging cam", and one to a desk fan. In the 3rd concert, he worked out how to cue camera changes and other effects using queues from his backing tracks.
The context for this song and for the album it came from was that of an anti-suicide message. The final line of the song "Why run away when we can just walk away" was essentially saying "no need to rush towards death. It will come eventually. So hold on."
The album this song comes from, Empath, has a lot of ups and downs and stark contrasts. It reflects the emotional rollercoaster of the lives of many rather well, which makes it sound all over the place.
If you'd be interested in another song to follow this one, my two personal favourites are Higher and Supercrush. Both are amazing in their own way and brilliant live.
Higher live at Plovdiv is massive spectacle, Ken you should totally check that video out!
"He's a one man Pixar Movie" .....perfect description of Heavy Devy !
Also he TOTALLY wore a tutu while performing this song live on stage 🤣
I saw Dev live at the Corona Theatre in Montreal at the end of February before he cancelled the rest of that tour. It was his last show that weekend, so he cut loose. When he went to change into the tutu, he fully dropped his pants and spent the whole time walking around on stage in his boxers.
While watching this I just realized I have been listening to Devin Townsend for just under two decades and there is a reason for that. He's a genius. Thanks for sharing his music.and I hope others discover the magic.
GENIUS
I've met Devin, he's a SUPER kind person, very humble and funny.
Seems obvious at this point the guys hysterical
He is both an introvert AND an extrovert. When he's by himself for performances like this he gets super nervous, and lets everyone know it lol And the octopus is a prop from his video Genesis, and it kind of makes the rounds through livestreams, even another reactor after watching this got one for herself. Still, I highly, HIGHLY recommend The Death of Music, Live at the Royal Albert Hall.
For the tour he started earlier this year, he actually asked audience members to donate stuffed animals so he could fill the stage with them. My good friend who's on TH-cam as Notes Reviews sent a whole bunch from his personal collection to him for the Toronto show. Shame the tour was cancelled due to COVID :( (edit: the Toronto show did go on, and it was FANTASTIC, but that was one of his last dates before everything got shut down)
Could not agree more, definitely the most impressive performance for me to watch as well. Everything Devin does is great but Death of Music is another level.
Charismatic Voice got herself the same octopus.
i think you mix up different traits. when he is a introvert, that doesnt mean hes shy or uncharasmatic or doesnt love presenting himself.
@@yewhanlim8916 Tis who I was referring to lol
This man has so much talent it's almost unfair!
Almost? Nah, it's beyond unfair!
That's because he's not a man, dude. Can't compare the abilities of an ET with a mere human.
Welcome to Devin Townsend. Yes, this is his kitchen, yes the octopus is his favorite animal, and yes, he is a complete vocal badass.
I was at a Q&A with Devin where he actually says he doesn't enjoy singing nearly as much as it can seem, and that it actually takes quite a lot of him to do it. He writes all his music with a female vocalist in mind and is therefore thrilled when he gets to have people like Anneke and Ché help him out.
Anneke... 😍
@@IllustriousCrocoduck Check out her new song "My Promise". 😰😭
@@IllustriousCrocoduck This! I had the pleasure of seeing her live a bunch of times when she sang for The Gathering and once solo and she's such a wonderful performer and kind person.
His quarantine shows were amazing, especially as each was for a different charity. Living legend and great human.
My favorite line from this song is "why run away, when we can just walk away?".
The lyrics are actually super-deep. Borderline philosophical. The video to Why is great, too.
@@marcoheinrich9518Agreed.
Ken - if he ever asks you to work with him, these are your instructions:
1) DO NOT say "No thanks".
2) See #1.
So glad you're doing more Devin. He's the best.
And this is from his last album “Empath”, singing on this is Elektra Women’s Choir, they are wonderful!
Expect anything and everything and all in between
Devin is so open and prolific
If you go through his discography you just fall from amazement in amazement
Devin ALWAYS exceeds listeners’ expectations.
Ken, Devin is the long lost Disney Princess.. of METAL.
I got to meet Devin last year the night before his show at The Roundhouse in London which has since been released as 'Orders of Magnitude - Empath Live Vol 1'. The meet was a charity curry night in Devin's name. He came, he goofed, he ate curry and he also held a Q&A session that alone was worth the cost of entrance. Devin was completely authentic - totally open and honest about his journey as a musician, his bipolar disorder and how he relates to the world. If you get the chance to do a Q&A session with him go for it. He's one of the most humble and down to human beings I've met.
I flew to to the UK last year to see him, because the shows here in Finland had an age restriction of 18 and I was 16 at the time (I'm 18 in about a month), and there were still tickets for the show in Cardiff, so I went there. I actually paid for the VIP thingy and met him.
I cannot agree more with you. Most humble, funny and seriously the nicest person ever. I will never forget that night!
Nice, been waiting for this one! I swear, the guy's musical talents know no limits, from Steve Vai to Strapping Young Lad to Casualties of Cool to this pseudo-Disney piece to...
Devin seems pretty accessible, if you wanted to interview him for your channel I'm sure he would consider it if you sent him a message(he's pretty active online). He's done some online content for other channels/music media throughout the pandemic.
And, BTW, you should DEFINITELY do that, I would LOVE to hear the questions you would have for him and his answers!
Great stuff as always, Ken! I appreciate the self-deprecation(I've built a whole life based on it LOL), but we definitely aren't afraid of hearing that voice!
Oh yea, and "4th!" or whatever...
Why? Because Devin is the man!
I love how he just ends it and laughs and goes "What's next?"
You sorted it out perfectly. This is Devin from his home doing one of many quarantine concerts. Cheers from the left edge of Canada.
Thank you for reviewing this wonderful performance. This song seems weird, but it’s so beautiful, kind of a combination of Disney and Gothic at the same time.
You know that he is in Vancouver. Maybe you should reach out to him and go do something after all of the lockdown with Devy!!
I know it's been a year since you reacted to this song but Empath was a great album. Check it out. Also Devin Townsend lives on Vancouver Island.. way south of you. Maybe you'll run into him on the ferry.
This is supposed to be his take on Disney princess songs. He's full of surprises
One-man-Pixar-Movie it's the most accurate description of Devin in this song ever
Master of the pitched scream!
The octopus made it's debut in the Genesis video, to the best of my knowledge. I was happy to see him/her?
“Weird and cool”. That’s Devy.
I highly recommend watching all of Devin's Quarantine Sessions. I can't say enough about him. There are no words that are adequate. Devin is my favorite weirdo too, next to my daughter. 💙🤘👍✌️
Thank you for another fantastic Devy review. I think that you have done all of my favorite reviews of devin townsends material. Its just so blatantly obvious that your 100% in love with Devy as a performer. Note that I said as a performer. I'm not trying to insinuate anything funny here. Your infatuation is a pure and completely understandable thing.
Been waiting for this one🥰
Maaaaaaan, I’ve been waiting for you to do this song! I’d never heard of him before I stumbled across your Kingdom reaction so thank you! Keep up the great reactions!
The ‘car battery’ is a Line 6 Amplifi, a little practice amp. The pedal in front of it is a Fractal Audio FM3 (it’s what he played his guitar through)
Oh, I forgot!
I subscribed last week. Good videos man. Love your joy over good performances.
I love how diverse your selection is to react to😊
I subscribed! Just for the record, watch the original video, you will be splitting your sides laughing! Also, I must request STORMBENDING! Thank you for doing more Devin than most people are willing to do! I wish more folks would react to his music, the man is amazing!
Devin is the best kind of weirdo.
Ken, you have so charisma and seem so honest and genuine I just can't help think you are a Disney villain in your secret life.
I know, maybe you sleep with students or their mothers. I mean I'm sure whatever you did it was legal just a tad questionable ethically and I don't fault you for a second, no one can understand temptation on that level where these women just throw themselves on you. God bless.
I haven't even finished the ad (and yes, I let them play :), and I'm like, "YES". :D
The one man army and theme park of progressive metal. I admire his talent and personality.
Devin is so amazing in all aspects of his music/entertainment.
He's always like this, I saw him at a festival one time where his equipment didn't show up, so we were treated to him with just a microphone and himself.
Please like this comment so he listents to Devin Townsend - Stormbending, its an incredible song and Im sure he is gonna love it too, preferably the official video since its beatifully made, but if copyright issues any other would do too.
That was so rad! xD I loved this. :)
There's a great video of this song. He composed it. Love the channel :)
Ken, I've come to really enjoy your reactions. Of course it doesn't hurt when I enjoy the artist...
I never heard of him before...but LOVE him! Will check him out.
BTW, please review VoicePlay “Warriors.” Amazing production.
Oh boy, are you in for a treat! 👍🏻👍🏻
Just be aware that this is a very deep rabbit hole you are about to go down. Nobody told me and I still haven't hit the bottom....assholes...lol
@@ngcolby it happened to me too, but it’s oh so worth it😆👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
The “car battery” is a guitar amp, the piece in front of it looks to be a multi-effects pedal. Cheers.
......which he's using as a headphone amp because his headphones wouldn't reach to the laptop
The Fx is a Fractal controller.
This is from his latest record that expresses all sides of his music styles. And he loves showtunes, and he wrote a doozy. He's just in his basement wearing his pajamas.
I liked his singing and yours! Being inspired is a lovely thing. :)
The bridge section of this tune is just spectacular...
I've watched several of his guitar masterclasses - I am, by no stretch of the imagination a guitar player (I attempted bass in the 90s. I did not end well) but they are consistently interesting. It's a very different Devin to Stage Devin.
One of the most genious human of this earth
great reaction, heavy devy is a treat for all!
Your singing was an added plus! Lovely voice!
Yes, it's his song, off of the "Empath" album, it's wonderful.
When Devin was in Oslo for his solo semi-acoustic show he said musical theatre was both one of his greatest influences, and that he actually had a musical he wanted to produce, just that it was too weird to get production backing.
The "Battery" behind him is actually a Line6 Guitar amplifier and the thing in front of it is a guitar effects pedal board.
I have not payed enough attention to Devin Townsend that’s for sure ❤️
Hey Kevin! So to answer some of your questions, the controller he's using is being used to change the camera angles, the object in the back appears to be maybe a portable amp so he can hear himself(?) and a small audio mixer.
This is from his latest album "Empath" and its comes right after one of the heaviest most brutal songs hes ever written lol. The album is an insane ride. It does sound quite disney. Its definitely musical theatre!
Id really like to add a suggestion that you check out some of his work from his "Casualties of Cool" project. Its a more low key Americana/country style album he made with an amazing female singer named Che Dorval. Dunlop did some really great live recordings of the songs "Bones" and "Mountaintop" the reaches of Devins catalog will never cease to amaze!
What a God...up there right next to Maynard, Gilmour and Hendrix. Forever my fave, changed my life. X
Devin Townsend is just amazing. Please react to The Death of Music played live from the Royal Albert Hall. It's absolutely incredible. Gives me goosebumps every time I watch it
"old car battery" looks to be some miniature guitar amplifier (he plays guitar along with vocals on the rest of the show) and the thing in front of it is probably some kind of guitar effect unit or amp channel switcher. The game controller is definitely controlling the cameras!
He is like you see him. Always.
The whole stream was brilliant, and yes people have said both him and floor should do Disney scores for a laugh,
It’s is his sort of studio, the black pads are where he hangs his guitars, he did all the set up camera, backing tracks etc in preparation for all the live streams he did
He's such an adorable and admirable freak. As some others correctly mentioned here, he does write and perform a lot with female singer support in mind. Anneke and Che should really get some more love. And so would Devin's ability to master more than just his own voice and presence.
So, it's about time the top vocal coaches would pay some attention to the Devy-Annie/Che and Devy-DTP-grandstand signature performances as well. Like Grace from the Retinal Circus, Numbered from the By a Thread' show, Higher @ Summer Breeze, Why live with Che, or Ih-Ah with either of them.
Signsture performances of Devin's Metal Tinkerbell Anneke from her TG25 show with her own band The Gathering are so much worthy of a massive audience and thorough analysis as well: Travel, Waking Hour or On Most Surfaces. Enjoy!
I couldn’t agree more! 👍🏻
Genre doesn't matter - a great song is a great song. It took me a while to get and get into Devin but I'm a lifelong fan now. Thanks for reacting to Why.
Excellent
If I remember reading it correctly, he actually gets performance anxiety at times, and that comes out in some of his unique weirdness, ie: tracing the "A" letter on his backdrop, holding the octopus. A lot of the "natural ham" is him trying to combat his anxiety
He sings "Bring Him Home" from Les Mis as well, guy is crazy talented.
the car battery is a blutooth guitar speaker effectively, the "wires thing" (?) is a multi-fx processor and yes, it's a game-cube controller.
This is in his basement if I remember correctly, and this is a charity livestream. He did a few, I know he raised about £80k for the NHS in the UK and similar or more for healthcare in the USA and Canada.
Also he was feeling unwell during this, listen to the original recording, I'm sure you'll notice the omitted section.
Thanks very much
I’d love to hear you do a cover of a Devin song Ken.
Hey! Yeah, this song "Why?" is an original song from Devin's newest album "Empath".
And yeah, he hooked up his home studio so he could stream full solo concerts in quarantine for various charities, which is what this video was taken from :)
That "car-battery" thing? That's a portable guitar amp he was using for the stream to play his guitar through! xD
You gotta listen to Strapping Young Lad -Love. It's Devin's other band where he goes way harder than here.
One of his many other bands, lol
Right again x
Devin is one of those guys that you just kinda stand back, and patiently watch him throw stuff out. 30% of it is crap, 30% is good, 20% is goofy fun, and 20% of it leaves your jaw on the floor. He never leaves you bored tho. He bills himself as progressive metal, but he covers just about all the genres at some point or another. I compare him to Prince. Prodigious writer, vastly underrated, spews a lot of crap out, but then hits that one song that you just can't stop playing. He's a musical genius, that if you are patient, his ideas will coalesce into a song that leaves you in tatters.
If you want to go on a trip with Devin, try Genesis from this same album. He mashes about 47 different ideas into one song, it's nuts, but awesome. If you want the more polished, lots of fry screams, wall of sound version of Devin, try Stormbending from Transcendence. This one evokes an emotional response in most people.
How dare you say 30% is crap. Burn your toungue you heathen. Burn
@@stupud818 nah...he's one of those geniuses that's out on the ragged edge of what is possible. He prods and explores those edges. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. Thus the crap. Because he explores the ragged edge tho, he sometimes finds utter genius out there, and you get a jawdropper of a tune. If you listen closely to the crap, he will pull, tweak, and recycle bits into his songs that you just can't put down. There is a method to his madness, his process. He needs to go off on those tangents to find the bits that work for his next brain melting tune. Rather than edit a record down lately, he just gives you another whole record with all his half baked ideas (some which seem fully baked to me). You just have to wait for him to find the right pieces to put together, and strip out the crap. Or in the case of Genesis, he says fuck it, and throws all the ideas into one song. He's Devin Townsend, he is what he is, and he does what he does, and you just have to be a little patient for him to blow your mind. Well worth the wait.
@@stupud818 I don't know, man... I'm a huge fan of Dev, and even I thought parts of Devlab were really hard to listen to.
He had a quarantine concert, it's 2 parts of epicness on his channel.
I remember Devin receiving an Octopus toy from the public during his Adelaide evening with show. Not sure if its the same on though.
I'd be more than happy to hear Ken Lavigne cover a Devin track, by the way. Your voice had a similar warmth to it!
X box controller, Fm3 (axe fx, guitar processor) And behind that is a line 6 speaker. And yes, that is his studio.
Thats a shure sm7b. Can be used for anything from recording a space shuttle to a butterfly if you have the right preamp.
I have no idea who this Devin guy is, but Ken, I really enjoy your commentaries.
That ain't a 'podcasting' Mic. that's a Shure SM7. One of the best recording mics ever used in recording. Many greats from Michael Jackson to Metallica have been recorded on those (and of course most Devin albums. It is original purpose was broadcast in it's inception in 1973 but was found to be fantastic for recording. Even though it is Dynamic not Condenser it almost has similar range and sensitivity but best of all a built in transformer that gives it a very focused, controlled and forward sound.
Devin just loves octopi, it's his favorite animal. he refers to himself as "octopus lover" in a song off Empath ( which is the same album this song is on)
A lot of musicians use the SM7B mic in the studio. I'm not a huge Metallica fan, but Hetfield used on for his vocals on several albums.
Would love to see you react to Henry Rollins - Liar
The octopus is an actor in one of Devin's music videos. In Genesis.
Devy is a mad scientist trapped inside a comedian trapped inside a musician
Watch his CBC concert from January 2019. Especially "Bring Him Home"
if you want the octopus ref, watch his video "genesis" (That one's a trip also obvs)
Devin deserves to play the voice of a Disney character. make it so Disney, you have been put ON NOTICE.
Could always do with more Devin!!!
You have to find somebody who looks at you the way Ken looks at Devin :) :) :)
I subcribed a bit ago love your reactions
