- In this video I experiment with fitting some Carver C5 trucks onto my Winkowski Dope Planet deck.
I had loads of fun in the bowl and I couldn’t help but compare the performance of the C5s with my trusty Independent truck setup.

Hi Jon and other C5 riders. You can flip the kingpin so the bolt goes under the truck. It locks itself! When you invert the kingpin like this there’s way more room for grinds!! There’s a howto video somewhere on TH-cam (50 an fabulous skate). Great video as always!
Nice tip, thanks!
@@JonBishopSkate hi Jon. Fun fact. I asked another skater, here in the Netherlands, If he knew Jon Bishop. Wanna know what he said…. Yep he’s the reason I started skating!! How cool is that.🛹
@@SunriseSessions crikey, that’s so rad 😂
In my case I added shock pads and angled sector9 risers for that kingpin to get out of the coping and works veeery goooot
Those decks make magic in my brain
You have made alot of progress since you've started...good job an keep skateing
Winkowski is in my top 5. Winkowski, Barletta, Gonz ,Appleyard and Frankie hill
Appleyard what a skater! The whole reason I got involved placebo was because of his video part!
Nice to see carver c5 and lip tricks session.
That's my setup with a andy anderson deck for a while now. Fakie tricks and switch stance are emotional lol.
Great vid!
Many thanks for tuning in dude!
Thanks that was great I got the winkowski board and mindless surfskate trucks I'm going to put them on it
Your progression be soaring!!
Class 😁 You'll have to get Stevo at the Temple of Fringe in the mix 🤩🤙
I just got some Cx carver trucks and I have the Dope planet 2 board I will need to try this
Just put a set of CX trucks on a SC Meek Slasher.
Soooooo fun. It’s all I’m riding at the moment.
Nice !
WOULD LOVE TO SEE A VIDEO ON THE JM DURAN SLIDEWINDER AND C5 TRUCKS SINCE IT HAS A 17" WHEEL BASE WITH THE SAME OJ TEAM RIDER WHEELS.
Yeah dude, thanks for the input. It seems like a popular request so I shall make it so !!
@@JonBishopSkate CANT WAIT!! YOU'LL LOVE IT!!
Wow amazing progress buddy, fakie carve grind sick
Many thanks for tuning in dude!
Shredding! Smooth style!
Soundtrack is sick as always 🤘
Many thanks dude, just mixing a new og punk style track for the next vid 😂
I've struggled with coping boardslides on the surfskate because the soft wheels are so prone to acting like brakes if they touch. Haven't ridden 97a wheels very much though. Did you find the wheels slid okay or were you just getting those boardslides perfectly balanced with no wheel contact?
Hey dude
Yeah, my Boardslides tend to be balanced so no wheel touch. However it’s possible to squeak the wheels, I’ve been learning the lipslide and I’m not so good, but can jam it in. Examples of this are in here th-cam.com/video/17webZ3lO6A/w-d-xo.html
@@JonBishopSkate Ah just what I feared, I need to practice more instead of change wheels! Thanks man and props, I don't think I've seen anyone else pull off the surfskate boardslide to fakie. I've been trying to either lipslide or revert out to come out facing forward but I haven't tried on C5s yet which might be the key.
Try Powell Peralta Dragon wheels/ Everything you love about big soft cruiser wheels, but they slide like hard wheels.
Built this exact setup but with the Madness Allen Losi deck instead. Loving those wheels too!
IDK if its the .5” shorter wheelbase but it’s a lot less stable than I was expecting. With the stock bushings it feels just as wobbly as my Triton. I was personally expecting a bit more stability so buyers beware. Still super fun though, much easier to Ollie and all around feels more at home in the skate park.
Thanks for the review!
Yeah she’s pretty wild going backwards 😂
Wondering the C5 set up on your JM duran deck or similar ..for carvy downhill / tech-sliding...please..Also some waterborne magic for tech sliding...if possible
Good suggestions dude. I’m sure I put the c5 on the JM Duran in a video? But I could be mistaken. I always meant to put my big carver Triton trucks on the JM Duran, it’d be mental 😂
@@JonBishopSkate nope , not the big Carver cx trucks...but wanna check out the c5 set up for downhill sliding , carving etc, nothing too hardcore
...as far as I remember on your duran you made the sliding video with independent trucks...not c5
Bishop have you tried the Ace AF1. I wonder if the Riot plugs if you are familiar with them would work fit in between the hanger and kingpin to make it extra surfy. In theory more stable in the center as well. I didn’t knew that by reverting the kingpin on the C5 it would setback the axels another 1/2 inch. I did it straight out of the box 📦 so didn’t notice a thing. Nice to know thanks. Chems make this handy wheelbase modification tools 1/4 0r 3/8 inch drill holes distances.
Many thanks for the input dude!
The Ace keep coming up. Gonna need to find a way to try some?!
Now I see the reverse thing, you turn the hanger 180 degrees. Another thing you can do if you have the newest C5 version is to inverter the kingpin. Just bang the kingpin out ever so gentle, it sits very loos and comes loos very easy. Now you have a grind kingpin nut on top and the old top nut on the bottom. Easy Peasy Japanesey and much lower sitting kingpin nut and same axel distance. Don’t be shy give it a try. I might have a set of Surf Rodz TKP coming for free. They deserve a review. Like what’s the ultimate TKP truck surf setup that can do everything. Surf Rodz vs Ace vs Indy. I will message you on Insta if you are interested?.
@@Quickrex cheers dude, thanks for the tip, yeah works fine now just ground off, so I won’t mess with it more for now, ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix’ is is the old adage !
Great video Jon! Oh man, could I use a harness like that. For now, I'm getting better at falling for now.
Parabéns.. muito legal o vídeo
Great video. Looking to go from a carver black tip w cx to this set up l am Lucky to have a great bowl w roll ins but want to ride new places that only have drop ins. I think a set up like this will work a bit better and easier on the drop than my cx blacktip. I would like keep the risers off to make the drop easier. Would a 44mm wide wheel (slimeball) require the risers? Preference is a wider wheel over the 37mm OJ
Yeah, works fine with 61mm wheels? You can always test it holding on to something before going full speed I guess?
@@JonBishopSkate usually have my trucks pretty tight too. Thanks for the great overview.on the cruz/c5 set up. Sold me on the set up. Keep rocking.
That bowl looks interesting. Hard to tell from video…. Shallow end looks like only around 3 feet / far from vert with super mellow transition…. Or is go pro camera distortion?
Yeah, GoPro’s are a bit rubbish at telling the story. The shallow end is 4 foot with a 6” radius.
Cool video 👍 I was looking for a carver complete with C5 trucks for transition/bowls but I ended up with a carver with CX trucks. Slightly used and got a great deal. My question is will the CX give me a good experience in the bowl too? Just curious if you had any time with the CX carver. My board is 31 inches long and a bit over 10 inches wide. It's a Carver Mayhem. Thank you for your input 🤙
Yeah, I’ve recorded a few videos with the cx trucks in the bowl. Works a treat ! th-cam.com/video/Jhzi7IZgPIg/w-d-xo.html
My cruise deck is a reissue Mike McGill with Paris long board trucks and bones 62mm gbones. It rides with a great carve but probably safer fakie than your C5s. I’d be interested to see how you found it if we lived closer (Aus) :P
Sound good dude! Yeah I love a bit of backwards !!
I find it difficult to switch back and forth between a surfskate and a regular truck. How do you handle switching between the two?
Yeah dude, I can go from normal trucks onto the SurfSkate during a session. But I’ve had some bad experiences getting onto a regular setup after getting used to the loose way a SurfSkate turns ?!!
Jon, you need to check out the Qwik Trucks system. For sessions like this I think you would dig it.
Thanks for the tip !
Hi Jon, thank you for this video. I've built a c5 skateboard on a Real Zion Wright, 8.5' x 31.8, it works great, with one exception - the front track is shifted to centered. I want to drill new holes about an inch closer to the nose. The foot is constantly before the wheels, and it’s lead to unbalance. Did you feel it?
Yes, its an issue for sure, and you’ve nailed the solution. The concern with moving the front truck is effecting the front pocket, but by moving the truck it’ll just place the axle where it should be. The Winkowski has a 15” wheelbase so it wasn’t too bad, but if you don’t mind drilling the deck I think it’d work no problem ?
@@JonBishopSkate I did it and it definitely got better. I had to make an additional riser for the front two bolts, as they fell on the bend of the nose. And one more thing - the inverted kingpin unscrews while driving, until didn’t figured out how to deal with it.
@@andreymalykh1371 yeah that’s the problem with inverting the kingpin. I just grind it down
Killin’iT Bro!!
Nice video, after trying this out some would this still be your go to wheel for these trucks or would you recommend something else?
Yeah, these wheels worked well, I like spitfire wheels too?
no riser pads? scary lol especially on a carver truck
Yeah, it’s a tall truck, so no wheel-bite. I gave it a good check stationary before setting sail !!
Hi Jon have you tried the carver cx trucks.
Yeah dude, I think that’s what is on my Triton? Love them, if that them 😂
Hi Jon, I'm riding a Soulboardiy Adam with Carver CX trucks in bowl. I'm keen to go faster so have just bought some Spitfire Formula 4 97a 60mm. Will these grip ok or will I slide out if I go aggressive on the carves? Keep making the videos!
I love the F4 99a and use them on concrete and wood. I find they are grippy, but to start with you may need to wear off the top layer. I just do a load of power slides until they are scuffed up !!
@@JonBishopSkate Thanks for your reply! I take it you haven't tried the 97a formula? I'll make sure I scuff them up before I drop in! Rainskates and Speedlab wheels were also recommended to me by the old gnarly dudes at the bowl
C5s sound like a tiger and the Indy's sound like a lion :D
Hi Jon, thanks for the awesome video !!
Did you exchanged the bushings on the C5 or are you using the OEM ones ?
Thanks
Hey dude, yeah just using whatever they came with??!!
so this is a 10+ inch deck, and the trucks are only 8inch wide, right ? so no issues ?
Hey dude, thanks for the comment. I’m Interested in what issues would you expect to see? I think the truck width verse deck width is personal preference, some like them wider than the deck, some in line and some tucked in?
Cheers
I personally ride 9" trucks on the Winkowski and they fit perfectly. Winkowski rides 159mm Indys.
@@JonBishopSkate I got my answer
...was just pointing out to the fact that the c5 trucks are only 8 inch, while the deck is 10...however, seems to work just fine, i guess
You should give inverted kingpins a try!
Yeah, worked fine with a bit of a grind down
why didn't you try feeble?( it's so different feeling on surfskate, front wheels just riding on coping instead of sliding
Awesome & Thanks :)
Many thanks for tuning in dude!
Dude, you're a skate adventurer! Do you think they could grind a ledge on a street skate?
Yeah dude, I’ve had them on the curbs !
@@JonBishopSkate Cool, do you think the base shape would make them "Noslidable"?
@@SkateCrisis it’s not the biggest nose, but I have nose stalled and reverted it on the mini ramp?
@@JonBishopSkate Ok,thx Jon!👍🏼🤜🏼
Ian it seems therz another way to go surfy on regular independent trucks- may be you could try this wit the jm duran- rip tide bushings-
Front - 75a or 80a👌
deck side rip tide shortstreet cone
70a or 80a👌
Road side riptied shortstreet barrel
@the back
85a
deck side riptide shortstreet barrel
83a
Road side riptide shortstreet crank barrel...
12 mm riser pads, both front n back....no wedge or angled pads required.....
Reason I write to you is i live in India and none of this shit is available here! Frustrating!
