What it's like to ride a Wave ramp!! Carver Skate Coach FIXES my Surfing?!

  • I flew to El Salvador just to ride this? The Carver Surf Skate Wave Ramp is has been on my bucket list for years and the location couldn't be more ideal. Seeing that they offered advanced surf skate classes, I signed up for one to really make the most of my time there. Instructor Stanley Perez from Puro Surf breaks down 10 things you can do to make sure you are making the most out of your body mechanics and riding.
    I'm an average board rider out of North Florida who loves surfing, skating and being stoked on the small stuff. This channel is documenting my journey as a better rider and sharing what I learn along the way. I also do tons of awesome travel vlogs and interview people in the industry who share a similar stoke for life. If that sounds like a path you may be on, consider pressing the subscribe button!

    61 years old and have surfed since i was 10. Took a 40 year break from skating but saw the surf skate and started again. I love carving bowls and skate parks when the surf is flat. Love you channel and your stoke. You get what it is about and it’s awesome you are pimpin’ stoke.

      You’re an inspiration Derrel! I hope I can be as active as you at that age. I love the freedom that the surf skate gives. The generated speed just creates such unique lines in the environment. Thanks for being rad and I really appreciate the support 👊🏼

      57 myself and similar. I lost interest in skating when it went to narrow boards, tiny wheels that didn't roll, and lost any connection to surfing.
      I used to go everywhere with an '80s Alva pool board. I would tic tac to generate speed without pushing. It was a lot like surfing around town, which is what I wanted.
      I respected what the new school of skating was doing in the '90s but I no longer had any connection to it.
      I have bought and sold longboard skates. They always disappointed me. I bombed a big bill road once or twice, but it was a busy road with lots of blind driveways, so I quit quickly due to the genuine risk of death.
      Surfskating has really rekindled my interest, both in playing asphalt with bigger soft wheels, and now, messing around in transitions on my latest build (which is why I'm watching this).

      Huh? All skateboards are surf skate boards. Especially if you grew up in the seventies...

    Surf skate is all about that back shoulder pump. That open shoulder feeling is definitely different from everything we have learned in skating. But that back shoulder pump really gets the flow of the surf skate flow.
    I like the phrase, "actively getting low."
    You did an awesome job explaining everything. Always enjoy your narratives. Stay Rad Sir.

    • @WorkForAvocados
      @WorkForAvocados  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely feels like a whole different world. Now that I see the difference it’s hard for me to go back to a more skate style stance. Glad to hear the information was well received! The actively getting low is definitely one of the things I need to work on with flexibility. Thanks for tuning in, have safe travels 🤙🏼

    Awesome vid. Other hand, ey? Gotta try that too! What bugs me as a beginner surfskate bowl carver is how we do these crazy things with our arms and shit… then you see a streetskater zooming through the bowl with hardly moving his body at all?! I know bowls are different than these “surf” ramps but tbh I always thought those exaggerated arm movements weren’t nescessary on a skateboard. My surf teacher in France said a surf board is much heavier to manoeuvre in the water, so you need that whole body movement but surfskaters just look silly! 😂 Long story short: This is the first video that brought across the point of surfskate for surf training. Well done buddy, thanks for sharing! 🤙🏻

    • @WorkForAvocados
      @WorkForAvocados  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally hear where you are coming from! I think that’s one of the things that stopped me from progressing much sooner. I saw my board doing the motions and making it happen so I assumed I was getting the full value of the practice. I also used to laugh at the over exaggerated movements but now seeing the benefits, I guess I’m going to be one of the silly looking ones myself haha. Thanks for taking the time to comment, glad you enjoyed the video!!

      @WorkForAvocados  ปีที่แล้ว

      The setup was perfect! I’d go back and forth between the pool and skating haha. I think you’d really like a surf skate. They make longer ones that you could use as a mid length trainer. Maybe something in the 34-38” range. Let me know how it goes!

    Super cool! Looking forward to the regular uploads. Something I’ve noticed, and you touched upon it, was how some surfskaters approach surfaces very vertically. I even remember in one of your previous vids you talked about parallel/carved approach. Of course, people are free to express themselves however they’d like. For me, I don’t really see my surfskating style as particularly applicable to my surfing, outside of generally improved balance and conditioning. When I’m in the water, I’m always on a barge. I could surf a bathtub fart on the thing 🤣✌️.

My regular set-ups seem to have the same carving abilities, just with a slightly different feel. @@WorkForAvocados 100% agreed. I do the majority of my skating out on the streets. I've always had a sidewalk surfing style. No matter what kind of board I ride. 10-15 years ago kids kinda laughed at my style, it was unique to them. To us older guys it's more natural feeling, because most of us rode them like surfboards way back when we learned. I had taken a 15 year break and didn't realize kids didn't skate like that anymore... But I stuck with the style anyway, on regular boards. I just purchased a small Carver Surfrider yesterday and am headed out to really test it. And have some fun. I had no problem adjusting to it yesterday and carved anything I could, and tested how long I could generate s-turns and keep the board moving without pushing with my foot. Endless once I got it going. I think it's perfect for sidewalk surfing. I wouldn't trade my regular set up for one, but why not add one to the collection. Can't hurt.

    Something that helps me open up to make better frontside turns is to pretend I’m holding two big heavy bags of groceries so make better use of my arms and chest

    Cool video man. I’ve seen a lot surfers on SurfSkates and though they may have, “great techniques”, their styles always turn me off. The best surfers don’t look like surfers when they surf, they hide all the same necessary arm movements and positioning mentioned here, the same way the best skaters do. I think the instructor, or I hope, is exaggerating for the purpose of demonstration. Otherwise, I’d say take your skate style and just mildly adapt the points of divergence between the approach in skating and in surfing. 🤙

      Great point. I think sometimes we need to be thrown into an extreme end of something to notice what the exact opposite would be and scale it back from there!

      @@WorkForAvocados yea, you already have the board skills and more style than the guy teaching you. Adapt the techniques to suit your needs without compromising what you already know.

    I wish I could convert what you and him were doing to regular stance. I cant figure it out even though its the opposite side.

    Surf skating is different. You gotta face hips forward , get your back arm out front, and look where you want to go .

    what an awesome tip about the arms! Does he make any reccomendations for surf skate setups for trainers, e.g. a preference for type of trucks or board shapes? asking as a short boarder

      That one was my favorite! Made so much sense and explained a lot. Honestly that is something that we didn’t touch on at all. His board was pretty chipped and beaten up too so I couldn’t even tell you what kind of deck it was. I assume it was some version of a Carver though

      Is Puro Surf the resort where that surf skate wave is in the video or is the concrete wave somewhere else. I went to his Instagram and I don't see any info on Puro Surf
