When I had this, I just put a damp sponge inside a ziplock bag with holes poked into it in the case. Revamped the sponge every day and within a week it was all sorted. Of course I didn’t blame Fender for the problem; my frets were perfect out of Corona. Forced air heat really does a number on guitar necks because wood shrinks and metal doesn’t.

I did that with two acoustics that just became unplayable over time. I have a bad habit of putting them on stands always. Humidity. But yeah it works every time.

Metal shrinks with a decrease in temperature and expands with a rise in temperature. Don't kid yourself that metal is inert. Only one metal called "Invar" or "Invar bar rod stock" is mostly impervious to changes in temperatures.
Your strings go out of tune mostly because of temperature changes, not just tuner or nut slippage. A warmer room temp from when you tune your guitar results in open strings being slightly flat. If your room temp has dropped since you tuned your guitar then the open strings shall all be slightly sharp.

I’m surprised I didn’t see you break out that block I’ve seen you use in previous videos. The block that had a right angle cut into it, and I think a file mounted to it. I think I’ve seen you make quick work of sharp fret ends with that in previous videos.

I'm currently in the desert, and when I moved, this happened to my P bass. I've been watching Dave's for 2 years so I was able file the frets. I just bought a squier cyclone and it was so nice for like 2 weeks until the wood shrank. But I just can't bring myself to filing them down to the point that dave did on this tele cuz I know i'd prolly mess up the finish on the side of the new fretboard. Its filed down enough to make playing it safe, but it doesn't compare to playing without feeling the frets altogether. Its cool to watch Dave do it so relaxed and in his element. I don't pay for guitar tech services, cuz Dave's has fixed every guitar problem i've ever run into.

In my experience fret nib sharpness can be smoothed by covering the edge of the neck and nibs with masking tape. Then using a block of wood with sand paper stapled to a block of wood and run along the edge of the neck. The tape acts as a gauge and protects the finish of the neck. Don't trim the strings off till you're done, Dave's right! And, I'm not a repairman, I wreck my own stuff. Sometimes I wreck stuff for other guys, but sometimes I can do a sufficient repair. Do what Dave says,,,,,

The two layers of tape trick is the way to go here,,one up to the underside of the frets the next over the edge of the fretboard and down over the frets.use a 220 grit file on a block keep it a 90 degrees ,the file cuts through the tape ,takes down the fret sprout with out damage ,polish them up 400,600,1000 etc, job done ! Way faster!

SO you took the time to do each fret individually. That means todays lesson is on fret end files, of which you had many. Are there different sizes, matching the frets? You liked a couple, but not others. Could have used more of an explanation on that. Also, is there a flat side and a curved bottom?

I bought a Rickenbacker 4003 SW a few years ago. Same story.... It really pissed me off that it passed final quality control without noticing. Such an expensive instrument should be flawless. The average Chinese copy is probably better nowadays. Did the same job myself and it's one of my favorite instruments now. But I also changed the bridge for a Hipshot, immediately after I unboxed it and took it apart to shield the pickups and control cavity. It is sublime now! And silent as a cat on the chase. Shielding these instruments should also be done standard at the factory. Same goes for every single coil instrument.

Wouldn't a sanding beam with a 35 degree angled file do this job much quicker? THEN finish with fret erasers? Just asking :)

and peel off the finish as well

@@DavesWorldofFunStuff It's best to stop before you hit the finish. leave a tape thickness and finish with safe edge files.

What’s your opinion on full pocket neck shims vs. the telecaster version you have there? Difference?

    • @DavesWorldofFunStuff
      @DavesWorldofFunStuff  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

you are adjusting the tilt not the entire height of the neck..full shim I call stewmac BS

@@DavesWorldofFunStuff I think the idea is .5mm (or ?) wedged down to nothing before the end of the pocket. Screwmac’s need attention prior to installing or you would have issues fosho. 🤘

telecasters gotta be the easiest fuckjng thing to set up. like maybe the neck pickup screws being hidden is a little bit difficult but overall i think the simplicity makes for one of the most indestructible things on earth as long as you don’t mess with it.

Thanks for the video. Both my Tele and my Strat are developing sharp fret ends. Everything you did is beyond my skill set, but now that I know what is involved I can better evaluate if a luthier is charging me fairly.
It’s February 28 and my humidity level is 25% in my apartment. Should I wait until the humidity returns to a safer level before I have my frets dressed?

    • @williamolynnger9143

25% is the average humidity of the Sahara desert. My place is 20%, so I know. Have it dressed now when the air is at its driest and you won’t have to deal with it again.
