That is a beautiful old girl now restored to something better than a players grade instrument for its age and will hopefully give another 70 years or more of service. Yes, the non-original changes you had to do will mean it's never going to be a mint collectors guitar as it was just too far gone for that. But its a very sympathetic and tasteful restoration of something that was probably not far from the bin otherwise.

This series is tremendous, a real luthier workshop on how to do so many things. You are very creative. I know we all wish we had hindsight in the beginning, but with all you went through to eventually get the neck working, do you think if you just went in with the idea that you would do a neck reset have actually worked out better? Thanks for the video series, I believe I will watch it at least one more time, but now just binge it straight through. Well done!
It’s really amazing to read such high praise. Not that I compare myself to a doctor, but I guess the general mantra is you only do what’s necessary. As with the D-28, if I could have avoided doing the neck reset I would have, and maybe if it was a museum piece I would have let it be. But ultimately, I don’t feel we should make excuses for guitars just because they’re vintage. If they need surgery to play at their best then that’s best for both instruments and prospective future owner in my view. And really the only setback was having to unglue the back again along that top edge, so maybe 5 minutes lost! Thanks very much for supporting the channel.
You should be able to get a decent price for this gorgeous piece but the time and effort involved were very intensive. Glad you decided to go for the refret. Not only did it solve the fretting out but it also provides the new owner with years of use. This guitar certainly isn't original but it most certainly is unique.

So glad to hear! Need to finish the D-28, I’m nearly done with a Les Paul Custom which had a previous “bondo and wood screws” headstock repair 😱, then a custom build for my godson. There’s also an Ibanez JS100, Les Paul Traditional (another headstock repair sob story!), 70s Jazz Bass, Epiphone Casino, Teisco something…. And I’m probably forgetting something!

Coming soon I promise! The lacquer flaked a bit and sunk back along the back strip so I did a bit of a touch up there, and also some on the neck. Plus life, COVID etc etc… Ready to polish back up and assemble now though!
G'day Tom, That's a very nice guitar - good work. 🙂 It was also good to see you replacing the frets. Frets are a wearing item - they're supposed to be replaced. You wouldn't leave the original tyres on your car once they're worn. BTW, can you grind the nose of your fret trimmers flat, so that they don't leave a ridge when you cut the fret tangs? The notches in an abrasive disc, spinning at a few thousand RPM, sounds like a recipe for a spectacular disaster. Also, have you tried Sidchrome 1/4" drive sockets for the truss rod nut? I use them here, with a mini breaker bar, and a 6" or 8" extension. I also use a Bondus T-bar Allen key for the socket-head truss rod nuts. The length of those tools puts your hand over the end of the peg head, and they're high quality tools. Anyhow, thanks for another great video. I'm looking forward to your next one. Andrew

They’re “relatively” affordable still as far as old Gibsons go. Archtops in general are pretty great value for old guitars it seems.
At 28:27 your getting the middle dropout issues and my first thought wasn’t the fretboard but the bridge and if it too has over time lost it’s radius.
Yeah and it had as it transpired, and that’s why I then filed the saddle slots. Thanks for watching!
