    I just installed the white manmade ivory Tusque nut on my 98 American Strat. What a game changer. The nut was simple to install. I just needed to sand off the bottom nub and take a little off one side to make it fit. The height was much better and as result, I was able to get my action lower than from the factory! Plus string clarity and sustain is much improved. Highly recommended!!

    Erlewine just sands the curved bottom across the fretboard that he’s already put a piece of sandpaper on facing up. Might be easier that way than messing with the nut slots.

    I know this isn't about the truss rod but I had to tell you Dave. My 4mm Tele Style rod nut refused to move. I broke a 4mm t-handle wrench on it. So I broke down, gave in and bought the Gripper from screw mac cause they swore it works. It didn't. Rod nut still won't move and Gripper is starting to round at the edges. First and last thing I ever buy from them. :D
    At least they're giving my my money back. I still haven't given up on the nut though. Hate to throw a beautiful almost white maple neck away.

    Looks like an upgrade Highway One, USA body and neck - same neck as whatever the US Standard was using at the time but with bigger frets here and no dual action truss rod - satin(ish) contemporary style nitro finish, assembled in the US. I still have one, same finish as this but a rosewood board. Yeah, the pickguard is a nuisance. But it's a tele and it sounds/plays good.
    Belated vote for the meatball sandwich.
    Thanks for the video.
    e: they stopped making it and replaced it with the American Special - basically the same, but no nitro finish and with Texas Special pickups. If you have an early American Special, pull the neck and you might see a Highway One sticker on the heel.

    I didn't know that a 22 fret Tele would require you to take the neck off in order to remove the pick guard. I have a 21 fret MIM Richard Burton Tele (similar burgundy color but with "paisley" spotting) that doesn't have this problem, and the neck pickup is screw adjustable from the top. A great instrument, good tone and very comfortable to play. Unfortunately it doesn't make me sound like Richard Burton!

    • @gtr1952

      @@andresguillen6750 Very cool! When Leo designed the Telecaster the neck was 1 piece of wood, frets were cut in the top and the back was routed for a truss rod, with a walnut cover, or "skunk stripe" LOL. The adjustment was in the heel, under the pick guard. Everyone loved that 8). With the 25.5" scale there was only room for 21 frets. They then went to a maple fretboard on the maple neck, and installed the truss rod under it so the adjustment was in the top behind the nut, like most guitars. They also increased the frets to 22, but used a fretboard extension over the body to keep the same neck pocket size. I've had many of those on my bench, I'm just not sure when they started doing it. The red highway one looks sweet!! --gary

    Is Tusq similar to Corian, a synthetic countertop material? I've heard of people cutting nuts out of Corian.

    • @offbeatbassgear
      @offbeatbassgear 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tusq is produced along the lines of Corian, and it's made of the same materials in a slightly different ratio of the synthetic polymers and in different quantities...Essentially it's a denser more resonant Corian, which is just a trade name for another mix of synthetic polymers.

      @@offbeatbassgear , interestingly, I bought my Tele from a pawn shop for a 125 bucks about 12 or 15 years ago, with a hard case; it had a cracked off nut on the bass string side with a big chunk missing. At the time I wasn't aware that you could build it back up with super glue and baking soda, so I cut my own replace nut, with all the wrong tools (the smallest needle files I had and a razor blade that I roughed up and so on); it actually came out quite well, no buzzing or friction hangup. I had some kind of kit of nut blanks that I picked up somewhere along the way, I don't remember if they were hard plastic or what, I'm pretty sure they weren't bone. Interesting, the same pawn shop also had a black Telecaster with the same broken nut on the bass string side, I probably should have bought that one too!
      It's worth noting that I was a high end car stereo installer for about 15 years and I got really good at filing dashboards and custom fitting radios into cars that really weren't designed for them. I never spent much time working with a block plane but my hand filing and Dremel tool routing skills are pretty good.
