    I love that you specifically mention only needing 3 basic tools, then use about 20 specialty tools and jigs....

      @Fisher.armstrong 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just because he chooses to elevate the project with other tools doesn’t mean you can’t do it with the 3 tools, as well as he had to size rough lumber which takes specialty tools that you wouldn’t need. Don’t let people having access to more tools then you make you think it’s not a beginner project

    It’s not about the “expensive tools” it’s being creative, doing a craft you enjoy and have a passion for. These excuses of not having his equipment is lame. Yes, those tools make the job 4x fast and better but this can be done with simple tools as well. All you need is the courage to get started.

  • @ScreenPrintR

    Thank you for explaining how to make them with hand power tools like a Circular Saw and the type of wood to buy that's already has a straight edge. I have a Circular saw, router, drill, sander, and a pocket jig. I love to see someone like yourself make a video with these types of tools. I've also have been looking at Craigslist for used tools. Thank you again, and everyone else reading this, don't get discouraged. If you're serious about wood working, take a loan to buy the tools you need. At that point you jump right in to a serious business, and have to push yourself to succeed.You wear all hats in the business. I did this with screen printing and had to learn to sell. Started with friends, family and church.

    The mounting brackets don't let the shelf fit tight to the wall. I've built floating shelves years ago for my sister's football knick knacks using 1x6's and just screwed them to the wall (@ the studs) using finish screws. The shelves are still "floating" to this day. It's been about 10 years.

    • @G5rry
      @G5rry 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      My first thought too. With all those tools, he could have chiseled a recess for the bracket so the shelf would fit against the wall (and hide the hardware).

    Hi... if you use dowls that have grooves traveling along the length of them they will allow the glue to ooze out along the length of the dowls and into both holes... If you don't have any dowls with grooves traveling along them try cutting or scoring them with a knife or chisel... hope this helps.

    • @craftedworkshop
      @craftedworkshop  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’ve used those support bracket, except, I trace the mounting bracket on the drywall, used a multi-tool and cut out the drywall “plug”, mounted the support directly to the stud. Not only is it stronger, but, the shelf will fit perfectly flush against the wall and not stick out a bit due to the shelf sitting against the square mount instead of against the wall

    Trying to learn woodworking as a hobby via the internet is absolute torture when you're broke. I'm thinking "Hmm, well a box is usually a good project for beginners. This has no top or bottom or hinges... Should be even more simple, right?"
    I know we don't NEED badass industrial-grade equipment like this guy has, but it's kind of discouraging to watch. For a broke beginner, I was proud of my little workshop. This makes me want to go to IKEA... Or take 4 planks with some wood glue & clamps and call it a freaking day.

    If you don't think you are going to move the shelves, or don't mind repairing drywall, just drill a dowel hole in the back, make the shelf size the width of two studs, drill holes into the studs, stick the dowel on. Then you can make the whole thing with just a saw and glue.

    Those came out nice. Though I would of loved to see some dovetail or even finger joinery as it would of really set them off. Even just 45% them and spline them would look good. Especially if you put bubinga wood splines on the maple and vs versa. Not knocking what you have done. I am just a sucker for joinery work. It makes things like this pop even more as that end grain always stands out. But again nice build.
