Totie Fields (to Gene’s left) was a legendary comedienne who died in her 40’s from a blood clot. She was on Laugh-In and used to tour all over the country. Loved that she was on this show and delivered some ball busting to Gene, which was normal and expected on Mike Douglas and probably why she was booked on the same show . Part of the early Kiss act was to be outrageous and play foil to the status quo.

Believe me, there are much easier and more reliable ways to make money than being a career musician.

Very subtle and probably nothing he’d ever have used at a live gig. But here on this small soundstage he could use it to great effect. He really was perfect for this band at this stage in their career!

The original Alice Cooper band were wearing makeup, heels, and dressing in women’s clothes as early as 1969… five years before this interview/performance took place. The glam thing was much bigger in the UK, but it was also happening here in the states in cities like New York, L.A., San Francisco, and a few others starting around ‘72. The most outrageous band of that whole scene was the New York Dolls, and I definitely don’t need to say where they were from. In other words, by the time this happened in ‘74, it was already played out enough to where the only people who found it ‘outrageous’ were the squares in middle America. Courage had very little to do with it. It’s not like the members of KISS dressed like this in their everyday lives. They were performers. It was all just showbiz.

Maybe he'd heard of them by then, but we explained that it would involve crazy makeup, spiked boots, spitting fake blood, fire. We did not compete. In 12th grade, another city, we competed in the talent show doing "I love it loud". Got 2nd place. Rigged but a circle complete. : )

Gene scared the living 💩 outta me when I saw it, but there was something mesmerizing about it… I was a Major KISS fanatic then. I honestly lost touch with them when they took off the makeup, booted Criss & started dressing like all the rest of the hair bands in the 80’s… sorry that changed line up never peaked my interest. Simmons, Stanley, Frehley & Criss are the one & only KISS!!! Alive 1 & 2 are rock brilliance in my humble opinion…👅🤘🏻🤟🏻
Really is a miracle that kiss made it from then to now, didn't look like they got off to a very good start. But who knew how things would change over time I just don't know how they could wear makeup for decades

Watched the new movie about Casablanca Records. At the beginning of the movie Kiss played at Casablancas 1974 grand opening celebration and the fire sprinklers came on and ruined their gig, wonder if that’s true. Anywho that brought me to Mike Douglas 1974 show. Gene’s spitting fire was epic and what a beginning. That show was so kind to this band, I’m sure Casablanca had something to do with them getting on the show.
I can see why Aucoin told him to be quiet and let the others do the talking. It enhanced his image measurably when he never said anything. It was funny listening to him make snorting noises through the whole thing. No telling what he thought that implied. He was pretty campy here.
According to Maria Contessa (the woman who designed KISS' costumes) there was a wardrobe mix-up, and two of the same foot boots were brought for Gene that day. He wore them anyway and nobody was the wiser.

“Cutting edge”? In 1976? Really? Glam was already over by then and punk was getting started. This was definitely popular at the time, no doubt… but far from ‘cutting edge’.

Why is it insulting to say someone looks jewish? She's hewish herself, that wasn't the insult. The joke was more about him possibly just being a 'nice boy' under the weirdness. He also wasn't really insulted, most likely just surprised that she guessed correctly about his religion, which was not common knowledge at the time.
How is it that they “had guts to dress like that in 1974”? By ‘74 glam had already been in full swing for at least two years. Ziggy Stardust came out in ‘72. This was hardly considered outrageous at the time, except maybe for middle America. Alice Cooper was doing this schtick as early as 1969.
Totie Fields had Gene figured out in 30 seconds. Too funny.
I think she had him figured out even before that. She just made it official. She really got him good here. She was great. Too bad she passed only a few years later.
