Pour boiling water on the soil. Cover with a plastic bag overnight then use as normal.
Don’t forget to note that you cleaned, prepped and sanitized your seed room in your garden journal. It’s all part of the process.

Cleaning tray tip, since you have the bootstrap farmer trays. Power wash them outside in the fall. Last year was my first time & it saved me hours.

My Mom bought my Dad a couple cheap vinyl tablecloths that he cut up and used to line his drawers in his shop. Easy to clean and to lift out if necessary to clean under or replace, as opposed to drawer/shelf liner. Plus, the vinyl kept things from sliding around as much in the metal drawers.🧡
I ran a bedding plant business for 20 years, those are Aphids. Fungus Gnats fly around, very small and the larvae lives in the soil. Aphids love pansies too. The little flying things could also possibly be a beneficial insect planting it's larvae into the Aphids. I'd be more than happy to advise you anytime.
She mentioned that they are flying around. But the cluster of bugs on the plant did look like aphids. Maybe she’s got both. I think it’s that soil. I bought a bag of that soil and it was infested with fungus gnats.

@AcreHomestead yes I agree 100% you also have aphids. I lost some pretty expensive plants to them. The winter doesn't kill them out either. I don't know how they survive but the year I realized I had a out of control problem they had been slowing destroying plants for 3 years. They always tend to hang out on stems and under leaves
Use boiling water to moisten your seed starting mix. Use a tote or bucket big enough to mix, but not so big as to cool off quickly. Cover and let sit until cool. Kills fungus gnat eggs. Use non organic liquid fertilizers in the house, organic outside. Works for me, learned from Gary at the rusted garden. Great seed starting series on his channel. Also a bottle bush and 10 percent bleach in water makes quick work of washing cell pots.
This year I did buy new indoor potting mix and put boiling water in the soil. All my indoor plants I took outside took off all the dirt and submerged the plants in a water soap solution for a few mins and disinfected the pots, reported them and haven't seen the flying devils so far, it is winter but I'm hoping I got all of them before I bring out the nuclear top guns and put them in the garage
I was just writing the same suggestion. It has made all the difference in my seed starting. No more gnats, white fly or fungus.

I was just about to mention similar advice that I got from Gary too 😂 he was the first tomato TH-camr I followed to start seeds and set my seed starting system up. So helpful.
Diatomaceous Earth works well, too. It's just a light dusting that's needed. I'm so sorry that you lost your plants!
Hey Becky ❤ ! I have a tip for an easy and effective DIY to get rid of live fungus gnats. In future it may also help to increase ventilation where you keep your plants and to water them from the bottom instead of the top, if at all possible. Gnats like a damp environment that is rich in organic matter, which is why they are so common, and persistent, in indoorplants.
Homemade trap for gnats (exact measurements are not important)
Mix together:
a glass of water
a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar
a few teaspoons of sugar
a few drops of dishsoap
Fill a glass, bowl or other vessel with the mixture and cover the top with plasticwrap. Poke small holes in the plastic (make sure it is fastened tightly) and your trap is ready.The sugar and vinegar will attract the gnats and the soap makes it so they can't fly out of the mixture once they are in it, causing them to drown. Also works on fruit flies.
In order to get rid of gnats in other life stages (such as eggs or larvae), a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water can be used. You will have to do some research and calculations depending on the strenght of hydrogen peroxide that is available to you. Beware it is effective and non discriminatory and will kill insect friends and foes alike. Not harmful to the plants though, so in some cases it can be worth to do it.

I had a horrible infestation ONCE! I do 25% peroxide watering every fall for the final outdoor watering and the first 2 indoor watering. Then I fertilize faithfully every 2 weeks at 50% strength for 6 weeks. Then I let the plants rest until spring. I live in the north with 6 months down time.
Also let the tops dry out as the eggs are deposited on the first little bit of soil and they live in damp soil. (Yes bottom water). I continue to put boiling water on my seed starting mix (The Rusted Garden) and let it sit covered for a while.
Hi Becky! Consider getting a bug zapper for your grow room. I've had fungus gnat infestations in my house a couple of times from store bought potting mix, and the combination of the sticky traps and a bug zapper does the trick every time.

#1 Should re pot the peppers In fresh soil and not store the green stalks or old soil in that same room. #2 you can use the soil in your tub . A general rule is when bringing fresh bagged soil home to use boiling water to mix with the soil to kill any eggs and knats in the soil. Reference The Rusted Garden he has alot of great tips!! What you describe here is exactly what i have always done. The first year that i used boiling water i forgot and went to fluff up the soil and pulled away cuz the soil was so hot. 😅 had a derp moment there.

From my experience, it's aphids on the undersides of the leaves. And fungus gnats in the soil.
I don't know about fungus gnats specifically but I get gnats in my apartment seasonally. The best thing I found was the Zevo plug in. They have the sticky stuff like what you are putting up and uses blue light to attract bugs. I have caught everything from gnats a random bee (unfortunately), to spiders and other little bugs. Easy way to track how many you may still have too. But I hope your sticky sheets help!!!!
They are Aphids. They bunch under leaves whereas gnats live in the soil. Aphids can be treated with washing plant down with hose and squashing the aphids also spraying plants with soapy water works at keeping them at bay.

My humble opinion is that it will be better to clean those outside with your garden hose and that way you don’t run the risk of clogging your kitchen sink.
It seems like you have loads of seeds you need to use up. Maybe try a "seed challenge" similar to the pantry challenge. Plan on using what you have, getting rid of the varieties you did not like, etc.
Also, unless you pull out that carpet, I would not attach a hose and start watering in that room. Especially since you have a mess of cords and electical elements. That rooms seems like it would be a good project to pay your Father-in-law to make-over for you. Renee's husband is talented and handy, he might be just the perfect guy looking for a side job to add a utility sink, closed shelving, a work bench, etc.
I don't know if you will ever see this Becky, but I got rid of all the fungus gnats/larvae in my existing soil by getting xl tinfoil pans and filling them 2/3 full, then baking at 375*F for 30 min. It was the only thing that worked. Now no soil comes in the house without being sanitized.
I would be getting those infected pots away from the door so none of the bugs can fly back into the seed room.

Hey Becky, put vermiculite on top of your soil when seed starting nats don't like walking on that. You can also use Gnatrol WDG it's a biological larvicide not a pesticide. Those look like aphids you can spray neem oil or captain Jack's dead bug.

Taking my master gardener classes/certification in February. But mosquito bits in a cheesecloth in the water jug will help, the yellow sticky traps are good, and a good layer of vermiculite on top of all your seedlings keep the gnats away from the soil where they cause a problem. I was warned that the first three years may be difficult for new gardens as the bugs will find a new food source and go crazy on it. If that happens, just don't give up, they will get used to it and settle down

I used mosquito bits. I put in on top of the soil and water as usual and that fixed my MEGA fungus gnat problem.
Definitely add a bug zapper to your grow room. I have one in my seed starting area and I also overwinter plants there. Works really well.

Becky I think you may have booth aphids and the fungus gnats. For your fungus gnats I would recommend covering the top of your soil with something light like vermiculite. I had great luck with this because it basically it suffocates the gnats and also keeps them from breeding. My infestation came from a bagged orchid mix. Good luck.
Becky, this is a great opportunity to start winter sowing in jugs outside. It's a popular method that is also nearly maintenance free. It's all over TH-cam.

I am in an apartment and have a couple autoimmune disorders that have progressed this past year that I am actually working on reversing symptoms of so I need to take it easy and not have huge gardening plans.
I do want to use herbals though for healing and would like to grow some of that this year in addition to culinary herbs.
Don’t start too early, plants will get leggy in the jugs.

Hi Becky, I just started watching your channel a few weeks ago so hope I am not repeating anything. I worked at a greenhouse and they washed and sanitized all seed starting equipment, trays, pots, etc.,at the end of the growing season just for the purpose of eliminating any disease or insect eggs. The Rusted Gardener is a wonderful guy with lots of information and Mi gardener is also good. Rusted Gardener did a video that he showed how to sterilize your soil before starting seeds. Either pour boiling water over soil or bake in oven until reaches a temperature of 180% because potting soil can have the eggs of fungus gnats in it when you buy it. I did that a few years but last year year bought the Stay Green Potting Soil and didn't have any problems.I have had fungus gnats and know what you are going through.
Yes, cleaning your room before starting the seedlings is important which I think you found out. In my experience I enjoy going into my grow room when it is clean and welcoming. I have a third bedroom that is dedicated to my gardening with shelves all around the room. Like you I start hundreds and hundreds of seeds for my 17 raised beds and it is important to enjoy that starting space, I think :)
A few years ago I got the trays and small pots for starting seeds from Boot Strap Farmer. They are great as you probably agree. Nice and strong.

Hi Becky, love your channel. What I do to sanitize my trays is get a big tub and fill it with water. Add what ever soap you use and let it soak for a couple hour and it makes it so much easier to scrub. Dump out the dirty water, rinse tub add water and vinegar. Once the trays have been scrubbed and then rinse, soak the trays in the vinegar water solution just for about 15 minutes or so. Next, rinse and then dry. If you have a utility sink that’s deep enough is even better. All you have to do is fill, soak, drain, soak and drain. Utility sink in that grow room would be so beneficial too. ❤
🌱As soon as the season is over and the weather gets cool, I clean mine by filling the wheelbarrow with water and soap. Then, get all the dirt out and dunk them inside the wheelbarrow & scrub them. Onced scrubbed, spray wash them with the hose. Since I am doing this outside on my porch, the trays dry out quicker and the mess is more bearable. Hose everything afterwards and wait for January to start seeding.🌱
Came here to encourage Becky to ask Josh to add a utility sink under the water connection. Will need a drain. I don’t know if you have a sewer connection close by.

Hey Becky! The answer to getting rid of fungus gnats is use mosquito dunk treated water. I periodically water all of my house plants with it and when I start my seeds for my garden I use treated water for several weeks. Usually you will see fungus gnats crawling on the surface of the soil not as much all over the leaves of the plants. I use the sticky traps around my grow area to just monitor whether I have any gnats emerging again and then I treat the soil with the mosquito dunk water for the next couple weeks again. I've not had any problem since I've been doing this. Another thing I do is I hydrate my new potting soil with boiling water and it seems to have stopped the gnat problem with soil that has the gnat larva in it when you buy it.
Can i ask what mosquito dunk treated water is? I've tried sooooo many of these remedies, sticky traps, boiling water, cinnamon but i still can not get rid of these pesky gnats.

@ijustwannascrap it's just the mosquito dunks you buy at the Garden Center or Lowe's or Home Depot. I break into quarters and put in a gallon or two gallon jug and let it sit overnight and then use the water for the plants watering from the top. After I've treated the plants for a couple weeks I only water the plants from the bottom going forward unless I see more gnats and then I start the process again. I add more water to it to the jug and I can do that 3 to 4 times at least.
I do this too. I have a 5 gallon bucket full of water and a mosquito dunk, and I pull from this supply at least every other watering. This in combination with sticky traps works!
I have problems with aphids and the flies, I will try this too. I am sitting here wondering how to treat my raised beds in my greenhouse with it. I have 1 28ft, and 2 26ft raised beds. I wonder if I could just run my hose from laundry room out there connected to the hot water, and put the broken up mosquitoe disk right in soil and saturate it with the super hot, a week or so before planting. My water is so hot you can't put your hand under it.
Becky, BEFORE YOU START YOUR SEEDS RUN BOILING WATER THROUGH YOUR STARTER MIX. THE SOIL WILL BE OK JUST RUN BOILING WATER 24 HOURS BEFORE YOU PLANT.
I have never washed my old trays and never had a problem. Laura at Garden Answers also does not wash old trays. I learned so much from her about successful gardening.

I just wanted to mention this in case someone hadn’t already. The yellow sticky traps and bug zapper are great at dealing with adult nats but not the eggs/larvae.
I’ve used mosquito bits to deal with the eggs/larvae. Either putting a shallow dish of them with water out close to the plants you’re trying to protect or a pot with dirt and mosquito bits mixed into the dirt.
You get more done in an hour that I do in a day! I love watching your vids!

Hey Becky! To overwinter pepper plants, cut them back, take off every piece of green, dig out and the most important thing: wash them off, roots and all. Till there is nothing on the roots at all! Wash the pot and use indoor !!! potting mix.
It‘s almost February and mine are just waking up und putting on new leaves. First harvest is so much earlier.

Laura from garden answer uses something call Gnat all or something like that.I know my spelling is not correct on that product, but check it out. You don't have to throw your soil away. She talked about it in a recent garden highlights video. Someone asked what does she do for fungus gnats. I believe it was a video aired about 2 Sundays ago. I believe it's organic.
Yep. Gnatrol is BT. Bacillus thuringiensis. Worked great to fix this exact problem a few weeks ago. Using yellow sticky tape to detect any further activity.
Also you could have a nice sink/counter set up right there and not washing your plant items in your kitchen sink.😊❤
Wasps may decide to nest in the planters in the spring, be careful! 😊❤
You can toss the soil in the bags outside. If I am not mistaken you live pretty far north, so if you have below freezing temps coming, then when you set those bags outside for a few days it will kill off the gnats. Also, if you soak a cotton round in apple cider vinegar then stick it to the sticky things, it will attract the gnats. :) and help kill them off faster. We get them all the time because of where we live.
Those electronic devices that kill mosquitoes and gnats really work. They are small you plug it in. No noise, the bugs are attracted to the light and the fan sucks them in, they can’t get back out. I tried everything else but this worked.

One of my issues from “box” stores is usually, the plants are miss named & I end up growing things I never wanted or can’t use. I love watching my plants grow & love my gardening all summer long.
Ive been MIA a bit...but getting my seeds started indoors and setting up new raised beds and trellises in the garden..lol...Im sooo excited..I have 1/2 an acre of grow space!....52 fruit trees and 4 more coming!!!!!
I like to clean my gardening tools for pruning and cutting with rubbing alcohol quite frequently. It minimizes the risk of spreading pests and diseases!
I think you'd be fine putting the old soil into an outdoor bed. I wouldn't throw it out because soil is expensive! I'd spread it out in a bed, spray with Neem oil or other organic insecticide and let stuff grow in it outdoors.
I sometimes use treated spent soil to fill in baled areas on my lawn so that the grass will grow back in. First one must make sure that the grass is not plagued with disease or fungus and such, because that may be what is causing the grass not to grow in. fix that then after all is cleared, fill in. Do the boiled water method to your soil before using it after it has been used in a pot & planting.

I use plastic cups and keep them for years. I use a southern window as my light. I grow at least 100 starts no problem and lose maybe one or two a year. It probably depends on where you live (I’m in Indiana) and we don’t have trees on our southern side of the house but don’t let the thought of cost of start up scare you. I have invested in the black bottom trays in the last few years but back in the day I used old cookie sheets! Only thing I bought was seeds and a bag of soil for a giant garden!

In the Caribbean, this is a commun situation. we use soapy dish liquid water, and it works very well
Try boiling garlic and add water to mineral oil, attach to a garden hose sprayer and that will kill all bugs. I saved several trees doing that.
I had a major fungus gnats, they got everywhere. also from overwintering the peppers I fully defoliated the, cleaned the roots, soaked in neem oil water, and used new potting soil, freshly purchased. I think the bagged soil already had the eggs in it, because the plants were literally down to a stick. Next time I attempt this, I'm going to bake the soil for a couple of hours to make sure nothing is alive in it. the STicky stuff helped, but what really worked wonders was this electric gnat catcher thing that has a light and a mini fan with sticky pad on the bottom, i just leave it working overnight

Hi Becky. Maybe start with placing your freeze dryer and dehydrator in a different area of your home? It doesn’t seem very sanitary to have those appliances in that room when it looks so dirty and has a bug problem? That would give you space to place a large utility sink so you can wash your trays instead of your dishwasher around your family’s dishes which also seems so unsanitary. Just some outsider’s perspective! 😊
Hi Becky, I saw someone reference Rusted Gardener and I do too. He gives a lot of great information for gardeners.
As go the oversintering the peppers, I watched a gardener, Praxxus, several years ago and he totally washed down the plants including the roots and pruned and then reported them and had beautiful peppers all winter long.
I just started watching your channel so don't know if you are aware but you should clean and sanitize all seed starting equipment, trays, pots, etc
I dealt with the same problem this past year. Overwintered pepper plants from outside caused a MASSIVE gnat problem. It was such a pain and killed so many seedlings
You may want to try vermiculite on top of your seed trays. It can really help with mold, damping off as well as fungus gnats. Just a fine layer can really make a difference.
I will be giving this tip a try this year. I’m going to use vermiculite on half of my starts and perlite on the other half to see which is best for me moving forward.

You can get a plastic tote big enough for the trays and make a light bleach solution with some blue dawn dish liquid. fille to cover the stack with water and soak the stack of trays in that. Even over night is fine. Take them out and rinse with the hose, dry and store.

Jennifer, just beware. Once you start, you can become addicted very quickly 😂😅😂. Just start with things you and your family will eat, and of course, flowers. Marigolds, lemon grass, lavender, basil, and mint are a few.
@@bonneymoseley1159 oh, I know believe me. Growing up both my parents came from farming families and so half of our suburban back yard was a garden. I've never tried more than the occasional tomato plant or flowers but with increasing grocery prices I feel I should at least try to do an actual garden (yeah, makes no sense when you factor in cost but hey, makes sense to me 🤣)

Hi Becky, You can pour boiling water over the soil in a tub with a lid. watch Gary Pilarchik from the Rusted garden. Sterilization of seed starting mix. I do this every year. Good luck!😊
You should put a utility sink in the grow room. A big deep sink to wash the grow trays or the dogs in if you need too!
I had fungus gnats in my houseplants and read somewhere to use Ceylon Cinnamon sprinkled in the dirt around the plants. It worked like a charm. Don’t know about the amount you have but thought I’d mention it.
When I go to do my seed starting I always mix a bunch of mosquito bits into my soil. It helps keep the gnats down. It's a natural way to keep them from taking over. Love your videos. Thanks Becky

Not OP but they’re also called mosquito dunks - they’re discs or granules that contain a beneficial microorganism that creates a compound that is toxic to mosquitoes, black fly, and fungus gnat larvae and interrupts their lifecycle. It’s naturally occurring bacterium, is harmless to people and is considered safe to use.
Mosquito bits:
Environmentally Sound Biological Mosquito Control
Sprinkle Mosquito Bits to quickly annihilate the larval population; Corn cob granules coated in Bti, the Bits (do not last long but) provide a punch, turning water black with larvae, to a clear pool void of future mosquitoes

Bits can be sprinkled on the soils surface or mixed with potting soil prior to planting will kill fungus gnat larvae with the same safety and target specific control offered for mosquito larva
Isn’t mosquito bite/dunks BT (Bacillus Thuringiensis)? Thank you for this idea. I use BT all the time and didn’t think of this for prevention. 😵💫

I love the yellow sticky things. I have been using them for years. Additionally, I put some apple vinegar + dish soap + some water in a small ball with the plants. Excellent trap!
A soft lilac paint colour would be lovely for this room. Just a thought.

39:35 Yep! This is a lesson that I learned over the time, never bring soil inside from outside the garden, and sticky traps are the only things that worked for me. You did the right thing to buy sticky traps, and they are the only thing that I suggest for you, I've tried every little trick to get rid of these little annoying flies.

Sure you’ve probably learned by now but the fungus gnats come free with bags of soil. The eggs are there when the soil is bagged. Not much you can be done to prevent them but you’re on the right track to manage them.
This would be a great time to paint your seed starting room to make it look more finished and bring in some color - maybe a shade of green?

My GreenStalks are doing so well!! I planted celery, green onions and strawberries. Also hydroponic inside cherry tomatoes and peppers doing great. I have learned so much from you!!

You should consider pruning your fruit trees and shrubs. Best to prune while dormant. Look for weak angles, crisscrossed grow patterns. Try to create branches that can support heavy fruit yields. You have already missed the time to sow poppies, that is a shame as I think you would like the flowers. It is nice to be out of the kitchen ☺️😊
I wonder if it would be worth it to install a laundry sink in your grow room? You could still run the smaller items through the dishwasher and wash the trays in the grow room.💕

I was thinking that very something! Good minds think alike. They have a very nice size garage, maybe a space fore the stainless steel rolling tray out there, it's right off from kitchen as well.
I have been starting plants in my house for about 20 years.
Last year was my first year that I had the same problem & mine was aphids. Something I learned was some aphids fly so, if you don’t get them stopped right, the only way to get rid of them is to toss them.
This year I bought a bug zapper on Amazon. I’ve have had it running for a month without starting my plants & it’s zapping a lot of little bug. 😮 I’m shocked.
Paper clips, binder clips, and even quilting (sewing) clips work well to secure envelope tops. Don't be afraid to use a mix.
If you have another' oven you can try roast this soil in 150°C around 30min to hour. It's anoyoing to have bugs... 😢 Most seed trays in Poland are one use. Maybe i'll try to find better. I want try toilet paper tube 😂 Have a nice day ✨💜✨

We use carnivorous plants to handle our fungus gnats, especially Sundews. They require distilled water, but we love them.
Becky, why don’t you have a laundry tub in your seed room, a lot easier to wash your trays etc than having to take them inside in your kitchen. Just a thought from Cobbitty NSW Australia ❤️💋
Highly recommend mosquito bits and neem oil to help with gnats. I have been able to save many indoor plants from gnats and other pests this way!

Add aprox 2 -3 inches of apple cider vinegar and a drop of Dawn dish detergent to an empty water bottle . Works great for catching Nats and fruit flies.
I hope your paper traps work well too.
