Basic remap on the 1.8t will see the same power output as this modded v6, but without the heavy v6 lump + for a lower cost + you get the fun of the turbo.
Maybe but you don't get the great gearbox, sound, bodykit and re-sell value.
Matter of choice but I'll got for the 3.2 anyday.
@@boutch3r Agreed that it's a matter of choice/personal preference, But I love the sound of a turbo, and massively prefer a regular gearbox over DSG.
There sure is something cool about nursing the weight in the nose of a V6 TT around the bends, but for me I just prefer the more balanced weight and forced induction.
3.2 Turbo though? ok... Yeah you've got me there. I'd ditch the 4pot instantly.
@@andyknowles666 Ahah yes turbo 3.2... You prefer the behavior over the rest, wise choice ! But keep in mind this is a mk1 TT, not a track car and not even a real sportcar, just a nice looking daily coupe.
I own a 3.2, it just a mk4 R32 with a different bodykit, weights much but a lot of fun as a daily drive ;)
@@boutch3r Yeah i kinda agree, I used to own a MK1 Toyota MR2 - which I swapped to a 4AGZE (1.6 Supercharged) then ended up converting to a 4AGTE - turbo using a GT28R, that car felt and drove like a track car, and unsuprisingly I have a 1.8t TT running around 270bhp, mostly because it was the best value for money vs power, and atleast it's not FWD only, I miss my RWD - alot. the TT is a decent car around the bends, but simply can't compete with lighter alternatives. My 1.8T is a nice looking golf too - but with more power than it should have :) even the 1.8 is a heavy ass car, the mr2 with a cheap weight reduction barely touches a ton! - pity that 95% of them are made of rust these days!

Love the 225 roadster.....oh hang on, I bought it from you! Brakes work lovely now they have been bled and two new rear tyres means it feels nice and fresh for an old girl.
Had a MK2 TT V6 cabrio, I’ve herd they are much more modern to drive than the MK1. Was a nice car but boring to drive, felt heavy, numb steering, the brakes weren’t great and 24mpg average. The sportronic gearbox was awesome though. Sold it after 4 months and bought a £400 Ford Puma 1.7. This little thing I adored. If you could get into a non rotten one in a future vid I think you would be impressed. Just feels SO right, steering, gearbox, pedal feel, throttle response, revvy but torquey (for its size) engine. The brakes were ok but some 2.0 mondeo disks and callipers - big brake kit for £100.
or get a rotten one for around £300 and just enjoy it until it needs another mot
Just bought a mk1 tt coupe 225 for the wife... put a decat and exhaust, pipercross air filter dropped it 25mm and uprated the front antifoll bar and shocks and a remap car goes very well and now handles how it should of from the factory all for under 2 grand! It's on p1s rubber seems very important on these things. frontmount intercooler will Finnish it off.

I've had a lot of cars over the years. Yes I spent a fortune on them .but the last 6 years I've been content with my TT mk1 it's suits me even if I'm struggling to get my fat head and gut in .they are very well made . And last well. I believe they are mostly aluminium so rusting isn't a problem .the engines are long lasting and very sporty .inside the dash board is a work of art ..and the seats are a high gauge of leather with heating controls . The rear seats are not a lot of use but still nice .but fold them down the boot becomes huge . A tremendous car that are not greatly expensive .find yourself a nice one you will not be sorry .

When you mod the 1.8t similarly to that 3.2 the cornering feel is actually better since there’s less weight on the front
it's a 25kg difference between the turbo and the V6, it won't do anything

Good video, I enjoyed that having been a TT 3.2 v6 dsg owner and always imagined the handling and haldex mods would make a nice difference. The v6 also sounds great in the videos where I thought mine was nice but too muted once above 40mph
I have a 1.8 T Quattro 180 but remapped to 212 bhp with just software :-) Quattro wasnt just the 225 and also there was the TT QS which was a 1.8T with 240bhp from stock - look it up... They are becoming a classic

almost year 2 with a TT 3.2 Vr6 DSG MK1. Issues: zero. Happyness: full.
Be sure to have a decent amount of money ready at all times for repairs. And never save a penny on fluids.

Nothing but reliable and dependable, covering over 150,000 km over the time.

The Convertible lost 54% of its torsional rigidity over the coupe which affected the handling, especially with all the extra weight from bracing that was added back in.
Overall I really like the TT, it's not the best car but its a great road car with classic beautiful looks with good every day performance, I'd liken the mk1 TT to a modern day Ford Capri.
Original Golf R32 was the first car with a dual clutch? I loved my old tt brilliant car

I agree with some of these. My 225 has had just a mild remap and now does both 0-60 and 50-70 in 5.5, less turbo lag AND a slight improvement in fuel consumption. Best £200 I ever spent.
Thanks for the video! I've had my mk1 225 for 6 years (touch wood) no faults. I've always wanted to upgrade to the mk2 3.2 however I don't drive much so not really cost effective!
For me I can say that the TT coupe 225 BAM is a beast... It's my daily driver and I don't have any of the issues you seem to have had with the roadster🤷♂️.. The brakes are great, the power is great, the cornering is great... So I cannot relate at all.
For the comparison it would have been better to get both cars in Stock condition and as either both coupes or both roadsters... You wouldn't have been so fond of the v6 then... The 225bam is way more agile! And it's no wonder the sound of the v6 is better... It has 6cylinders...

VR6 all day long. Don't care about the agility - its the driving character and how it makes you feel in everyday driving that counts in the real world. You don't rag it around the 'twistys' every day now do you? Plus it makes you more interesting: EVERY car is a turbo'd four cylinder these days. And yes 100000000000000000 horse power from a 4cc engine and fuel economy and yawn yawn, etc.

There is no other TT in audi history that sounds as hard and loud and beautifull than the tt 3.2 v6 dsg. Period.

If so that had the RB25DET engine which was a 2.5 liter turbo charged straight 6, the Audi TT has an N/A 3.2 liter V6 so you’re whole argument there just confirmed that you are indeed completely clueless and have no idea what you’re talking about.

Yes she did. I got away with it because she also confessed she had to call the AA to replace a dead battery after I had already done it three times because she never uses the car
I love a modified 225 mk1. It is a shame you couldn't test one of them as well. This is a great video nevertheless.
The 225 Roadster is an old version, 5 slots in the front grill, the coupe has 3 slots in the front grill. This indicates the Roadster suspension is inferior to the coupe even in a stock state! All later cars had a 3 slot grill.
The later cars had the suspension lowered and improved, shame as I love Mk1 TTs and have one 14 years old with 36k miles on :-)
Ditto have one of the later ones 225 roadster avis silver much better than the earlier ones also a bam engine
Same here..i have a 180hp silver black leather interior.. 37,000 on the clock..immaculate 2006 last year of the mark one..dealers are asking 5 ti 6 grand for them.
got a 99 coupe 180hp fwd silver ex/ grey leather in. 124tkm on the clock, lowered with h&r springs, sachs performance dampers. handles well and puts a smile on my face. however got some electric problems like the electric passenger window not working and temp& fuel gauge being offset. other than that for me as a young mechanic a nice and easy car to work on.

Phil Price What the hell are you blathering about? That's an aftermarket grill on the Coupe. You can buy them on ebay. They changed the suspension between 99-00 because they were flipping over.
@@LcFan96 I've got the same car as you. Your window microswitches are shot and you need to get your digital dash reconditioned. Common problem on TT. Search both on ebay.

I follow your reviews and like them. Very excited to see a TT on here as I have a roadster. It has been copied to the MK1 TT Facebook forum and created a bit of a buzz.
Some points to note though. Most car enthusiasts have chosen 225 over the V6 because they like to play. The 225 can reach 300bhp with a map and some minor mods. Hopefully someone can get you a drive in that and put a bigger smile on your face.
Also with 5k budget one would get the lighter 225 and give it a Porsche brake kit, suspension mods, map etc and get well over 300 bhp rather than heavier v6. Finally the mx5 in real world use doesn't compare. We both live towards Norfolk way and know overtaking power is important. The TT has this and can be a daily a tourer or track slag.
The blue haldex sends power to the rear faster decreasing under steer and in theory making it AWD more often than standard.

If I were to buy one it would probably be the QS240 for the overall feel and experience. But between a modded 125 and a stock 3.2 it's a tough decision. I've had a couple of 125's when they were new. But I've also had a succession of cars with the VR6 engine (never a TT though); two Golf's and a Corrado. It may be an old, heavy, low power engine as far as a V6 is concerned. But it has character and a wonderful engine note. The Corrado 2.9 VR6 is an absolute blast and I supect the more modern 3.2 VR6 in the TT would be even better.
I've got a MK1 225 roadster in the same colour with some subtle mods it's now at about 260 bhp .
It's a ton of fun to drive my only criticism is it's heavy on Fuel
I used to have a 3.2 in the manual around 5 years ago and the handling was poor but the noise made up for it. At the time it was a lot cheaper than the mk4 r32 second hand. I do love the looks though.

You should have done more lap time comparisons. To see which is the better of the two. Maybe even a 1/4 mile.... But in the end it's personal preference

Having a Mk1 TT fwd roadster with the baseball interior. It has the 185hp with Ecu. Picked up the car for very cheap and well worth the money..
Great nerdy research Jay - yes the TTV6 was the first twin-clutch “auto” car in the UK, closely followed by Golf Tdi’s, oddly enough. It was good for around 275lbs of torque, so marginal in the TT V6. Oddly, Audi then sold the tech to then-rival Porsche who developed it into “PDK”, thus eliminating the TT’s one big advantage over the Boxster.
Wrong! Porsche developed the PDK at first place. Audi used it in WRC with the S1 E2.
My TT MK1 2000 silver coup after the mods and replacing the electrical system is a wicked Beast. HR suspension and all new bushings down pipe. I put $26,000 into it btw
I have a 05 180 roadster bog standard with 123 on the clock. I love it but what you say is true ,but it's horses for courses am not interested in speed now all I miss is an auto box didn't fit them till 2006

I imagine people are looking at buying these, I had a 2004 1.8T, purchased with 130k miles for $5,000 USD. I immediately had to replace the secondary water pump but after 4 years and almost 50k miles the oil pump died and I sold it.
Plenty fun and reliable and still available for cheap! Just find one that was serviced regularly.
Mk1 is brilliant value at the moment, a good performer in 225bhp quattro guise. If you go into them expecting a sports car you'll probably be disappointed, but if you go into them thinking of the iconic looks, great interior and good straight line performance for well under £3k - who's to argue!?
But it probably will give you priblems or hugh miles on it. A 180hp in superb condition with very low miles say..35_40,000.. full service hustory..cost 5to6,000 from a dealer.

I bought one two days ago for 2000 American. Blue on blue 1.8t 5 speed . Mint exterior. New turbo a d a few other things. All it needs is a new interior, it will be a glorious project car, I think it handles extremely well for what it is.
Only a year late but......there are 2 sweet spots in the standard Mk1 range: the 225 coupe and bizarrely there was a 150bhp automatic.......not DSG. Front wheel drive and an absolute hoot. They must be rare, I was seeing Alan Shearer's interior designer and she had a BRG with red interior, it was truly fantastic, so was she
It's not really a fair test is it putting a convertible against a coupe having the coupe with its rigid frame and the convertible bending and twisting on corners Making it sleep and slide on bends

Mk1 vr6 TT are 237bhp same power as the Mk1 r32 . Power was raised a little for the Mk2 to 247bhp. The most powerful MK1 TT is the Quattro Sport 240. Also brakes are 2 piston, hence why owners opt for the Mk1 Leon Cupra R 4 pots.
I had a 54 plate TT 3.2 the same colour as that one and the paperwork called it Solar Orange. Papaya was also available but it was more of a pastel pinky orange. My TT had loads of problems, was always breaking, didn’t turn in well, rode like a tea tray in a quarry but was the only car I’ve ever driven that became part of the family. It was highly idiosyncratic and we were heartbroken when the DSG failed at 67k with a 5k repair bill that we couldn’t afford. Later I drove the mk2 3.2 and it lacked all the personality of the mk1 but had better turn in. David has been very lucky with his and it may be that Audi “helped” with the gearbox cost because that first DSG was notorious for failing. When it worked it was a joy though. Unfortunately the individual interior of the mk1 was the last TT that you could sit in and know it was a TT and not any other Audi.
What mk1 interior was the same as any other audi of the time at least mk2 and mk3 added some diferent wents

Not a fan f the sound you get in the exhaust due to the DSG shifts. Acoustically I really do prefer a manual, even if it is slower. The exaust on the r32 sounds really really cool.
Because of the narrow V angle you get this odd 'assymetrical' sound. I think the 12v VR6's sound even better than the 24v ones. the 12v is a bit more barritone, less raspy. they 'sing' a bit more.
Also,.. I'd love to have a track like that to myself for a day. :D
The wheels on the v6 seem to be a perfect combination re size and spacers. Could you share details on those please?
I don't know if you mentioned it in the video unless i missed it, but were you running the DSG in sport mode ? I have a 3.2 TT and it flies :)

A tune and exhaust on the 1.8T and it's going to murder the V6.
A turbo on that VR6 and that 1.8t all it would see is tail lights all day.
Thank you bro for that comment I have MK 1 I have a 180 hp 2000 Quattro and mine is heavily modified, 3 inch exhaust pipe from the back of the turbo to a straight pipe by 42 design draft 42 design draft dule muffler Franken F21 hybrid turbo CTS intercooler with all the plumbing that comes with the intercooler I have a bigger intake manifold that came with the intercooler huge air filter and a gigantic hose that goes right behind the air filter and connect straight to the turbo, now the biggest power I have on the car is the HALDEX Touch motion controller that makes the whole car I can control front wheel drive rear wheel drive I can control the transmission by the touch of a button the same set up that’s in the 2018 TTRS the touch motion controller I have that adds 50 more horses to the car i’ve raced brand new 2019 M3’s modified motorcycles nobody can leave me I might not be able to beat them but I’m right behind him no matter where they go I didn’t spend nowhere near as much money as M3 or M6 but my MK1 is a beast there’s so many modifications for this car it started off at 180 hp now at about 340 just with the set up I have right now also I have a GIAC hammer flash and I’m running 20 pounds of boost that V6 and that 225 hp car could not see me on my worst day and my suspension system set up is crazy short stroke stick shift light weight fly wheel street and strip clutch and I also have Sprint Booster to deal with the turbo lag that booster turn my car into an automatic without having one no more lag with the turbo because of the sprint booster… The end
@@mikael7744 keep on dreamin man is this you wish list what to do on car unless you have changed pistons valves bottom end crank head studs etc 1.8 180 hp engine won't handle that kind power..225 1.8 bam engine would handle more but still needs few mods to strengthen engine to suit that kind power.. @@mikael7744 Hey you forgot to mention methanol or is it nitrous peroxide rocket fuel you using unfortunately I live in Europe race you anytime with my 3 litre inline 6 twin turbo 2jz gte engine lexus also my daily driver bm 330d will humiliate your little tt 1.8 😆 if you do or dont have that kind power in that car.they are known to be very unstable in high speed or changing directions I hope you have rear diffuser a spoiler or big wing might slow you down we bit Hahaha..my friend has 2002 tt 225 bam engine bigger intercooler decat straight pipe exhaust 3inch inlet pipe ram air filter evap delete cupra boost valve could only get 287 hp dyno guys recon more than that is touch and go engine internals would not cope or gearbox ... only option for you is kers system might give an extra 80 hp connects at flywheel ...hahaha rest my case have no mic for you

It would not be fair at all the 350 just has more power and rear wheel drive to toss around,
they did a special edition lighter more powerful 1.8t 240 bhp and a weight saving there the best ones to have
I have 1.8t quattro 2003 that have come out of factory with 250hp.Handles very well in cornering and in roundabouts its very quick.

I'm happy to own one. My only gripe is the notchy gearbox (5 speed manual). A note on the breaks: I've had to do some emergency breaking a couple of times (animals crossing the road and idiots looking for parking spots). Mine stops really fast. Maybe the breaks need a checkup?

Yes. 42 Draft Designs sells them.
They make good track cars, the lap times are always surprisingly good but they're not fun to drive but they make great progress at speed.
I guarantee that your average driver gets a better lap time out of a TT than a Boxster of the same year.
In the hands of a professional though forget it, the Boxster is obviously quicker, but 99.99% of people arent professional racing drivers, but 99.99% of car enthusiasts think they are 😂
In the SCCA autocross in category "Stock D" the Audi TT V6 was utterly dominant for years it was the car to have, stop watches don't lie.
Look how close the engine is to the front! It's basically bumper engined. Everyone knows by now that these are pants in the twistys. If you can live with it as an A road cruiser then you can actually get a seriously fun engine in a decent looking box for good money.
On the plus side you aren't likely to spin one of these through the hedgerow. 😂

I would like to ask for a 986S, 996 and 987 2.7 comparison if that will be possible at some point(not likely, but still...).
I am selling my Merc 300CE and 944 to get one of the aforementioned. If I take 986 or 987 I would have to buy additional daily with 4 seats(for a baby seat at the back). Any advice? I know the mechanical culprits of them all, just asking which one would be most appealing to you.
Rare Clubsport/Quattro Sport Edition were nuts, which were 1.8T 240 PS stock.

I think it would have been interesting to compare their weight, where it is located etc. and how it affects driving on a technical level. That would have been unseen on yt.

I have the 1.8t 225, and I don't wish I had the vr6. Ask anyone who owns one how many head gaskets they have replaced. The 1.8 isn't perfect but, there are far more parts available!

You need coupe vs coupe. Stock heavier vert vs modded coupe v6. Redo with a Stage 1 Tuned 1.8 coupe vs the modded v6.
the weight difference is 25kg between the 225 turbo and the V6, everyone talking like it weighs 1000kg more xD
It's at a 10 degree angle the vr6 like in my corrado vr6 are the 15 degree angle until 2000 on and all VW's sold as a v6 are actually vr6 engines
I believe the TT has a 15° angle VR6. Unless that’s what you meant.
@@AaronAnonymous was the TT a 3.2 litre. My research I've done told me that the 24v vr6 so 3.2 onwards was at 10.5 degree angle there also more reliable than the 12v at 15 degrees but that's due to getting the design right. Either way great engine it's my favourite road vehicle engine.

Interesting video but a bit unfair comparing a stock 225 with a modded V6. The TT was always a nearly, nearly sports coupe with too much weight to really cut it but nothing that a few mods couldn't sort out. I've owned both (in coupe) form and eventually ended up modding them both and I agree that the 225 was more fun (admittedly the 225 had the potential for much higher power mods too) but felt more track day(ish).
On balance my personal choice would have to be the V6 which was almost as much fun to drive but was blessed with a much much better soundtrack (mine was fitted with a Blueflame but if you really want the ultimate noise/smile ratio check out the youtube links to an Edel exhaust). I couldn't help my drive outs including a blat through a tunnel or two to really soak up the exhaust note. Now very depressed about getting rid of both and would buy one again in a heartbeat if I had the funds.

The original was a peoples car. Not the new version. The mark one Audi TT coupe...not the convertible is a modern day classic..it looks are better than the mark 2 and 3. You forget the coupe exist??? Can we take you seriously?? The coupe is the only one you would consider...the 225hp is a great car.
You should down shift, use it like a race car, thats how I treat mine also stock 😎, also the turbo will keep up
Suprised anyone would mod out a V6 Audi.. You can get much more from the 1.8-2.0t engines. I have a B7 A4 2.0TQ and with a simple tune it will outrun the 3.2.. Needless to say I have a little more then just a tune.. Haha :) Also the Orange TT is beautiful.. Love the color and the front bumper looks like a the/ttrs maybe..? Anyway beautiful

I'm a 350z owner so might be biased but the 350 has Brembo's, a LSD, better seats, 313hp, better reliability and aluminium suspension components. The chassis is on the heavy side for a track car but it's very stiff and pretty predictable. It was designed to beat/undercut porcshe boxters.
A 330Ci was designed to compete with a ford mondeo and has none of the above lol It will cost you a bomb in maintenance with reliability issues, is down about 90hp and the rear subframe is most likely about to fall apart. An s2000 would be a be a better platform again than a 350z but decent examples are becoming rare.... Just one mans opinion though lol
dont wanna be "that guy" but it is a VR6 engine and not a V6 engine! There is only one ever built V6 (Biturbo) Audi TT and it is sitting in the Audi museum

Cool looking cars, I've owned a 2000 FWD 1.8t and a 03 Quattro 225 1.8t, but they handle terrible in corners. My 91 VW Corrado could take corners much faster

Travelling around Europe in the 3.2? .. better have a jerry can in the boot plus a fat wallet .. I took my 1.8 to Morocco [Casablanca] stopping every 300 miles for fuel . Joking aside I got 15 speeding tickets and one wheel clamp . Police took 40 Euros and gave me 20 back . the clamp was £2.80 to get removed . Driving around Casa' has to be done to be believed . They don't have traffic lights

Not exactly great value. I paid £1,700 for the 2004 A3 3.2 Quattro with a DSG. Remapped engine and box too.
And the best bit, you can get people in the back, and I doesn’t look any different than the 1.9 tdi, so discreet 👍

Comparing a coupe and a convertible is just wrong on every level.
Great video. However you compared wrong cars in the track, which was the wrong environment. The V6, although you had a superb example, is too front heavy for a track. You will however find that people get 225s, rip the interiors and go though a weight reduction of ca. 300+ kgs including aircon and with an engine that can easily go to 350-400 bhp are great for the track. Many examples in the UK TT forum.
