the 225 and 180hp engines are very different. they changed about everything to get it to 225hp. shorter intake, other turbo, better con rods, 2 intercoolers for the turbo, more oil nozzles to squirt onto the piston etc. theres a whole list of differences between 180 vs 225hp to look through. although the basic block and head design might be similar, theyre still very different

The Isle of Man TT (Tourist Trophy) is a series of motorcycle time trials that began in 1907.

In the mid 80's, I worked in Borneo. A colleague had a Starion. I borrowed it over a weekend. As I recall, I don't think I was very impressed with the way it drove. I wasn't sure whether the turbo wasn't working, or I just wasn't driving it hard enough, but It didn't seem to have the amount of get up and go that the looks would imply.

The name also harkens back to the NSU Prinz TT - which was something of a Golf GTI of the 1960s.
Seeing that gorgeous interior again sure brings back some memories. I had a black FWD TT Coupe back from 1999 til about 2004 or so. It was a very early production car that had left the factory without a rear spoiler and without ESP. But it was one of the cars that got those things retro-fitted by the factory in response to that series of crashes that semi-ruined the TT's reputation initially.
I loved that car to bits and it was the first "cool" car I ever had. It was super-reliable, lots of fun to drive and surprisingly practical and reasonably comfortable. I took my GF on a 1,000 km trip to France in it and we didn't have to travel light or anything. That trunk is plenty spacious for a little sports-car and you can always drop the rear seats if you need more room.
And when I sold it with about 115,000 km on the clock, the whole car, and especially the interior, still looked as good as new. There weren't even any real wrinkles, let alone nicks or tears, in the leather on the driver-seat.
Later in life I got to drive the TT Mk II for about a month or so and while it was a better car overall, it just didn't feel as special as the Mk I. Probably because it lacked all those quirky details in the interior that made the original TT so unique.

    • @4L10

With a chip, I get 33-35 mpg on the highway at 65 mph. With the top down, very easy in/out, and more enjoyable to listen to the Borla exhaust. Two tops in 20 years and still have original brake pads. I always thought those were great looking, really fun cars. Wanted one desperately back in the 90s. Would love to see one mechanically sorted today, or maybe with an LS dropped in.

The Cube's seating is exactly why the Scion XB was so popular with an older crowd, the opposite of what Toyota was trying to achieve. However, when I was in Okinawa the Toyota BB was super popular among those of us who were allowed to have cars (I wasn't one of them). You could fit 5 Marines in them with plenty of legroom, you could fit a ton of luggage in it. It's a perfectly sized car for the size of the roads over there. I'd buy one now that I'm 27 because I know better, but at 19 I thought they were ugly.

I followed a cute little Jet Black TT on my road today. Haven’t seen one in a long time. I thought what a nice little car. But I’m 6-5 and don’t think I would fit. Then the Wiz sends me a notification that he’s got one in the shop. Love it when that happens!

I once drove an Audi TT Abt STW Edition which was 1 of 6 ever made.
If I remember correctly it had the same engine but tuned up to around 300hp. That thing was a breeze to drive with its Quattro manual drive train. Just awesome.

We have a Citroën Berlingo a car based on a small van and like the Cube, it's so practical and easy to get in and out of. Other much prestigious cars end up being frustrating when they can't do what the Berlingo does and feel claustrophobic in comparison. A handy vehicle to have in any household!

At least it made it to the shop BEFORE the timing belt snapped.
The last TT that came into my shop had the belt snap at 70,000 miles (the recommended scheduled change was at 80k), its very bent valves are now on display in the waiting room to show why timing belts are important maintenance items.

Was it really old and just below mileage replacement schedule. Maybe it exceeded age replacement and owner never bothered to get it changed in time.

The New Beetle and TT are both based on the MK4 Golf hence the similarities. I remember the episode of Wheeler Dealers where they bought a TT with no 1st & 2nd gear. It was the rivet for the selector fork for 1st & 2nd gear that had sheared. It was lucky that the transmission hadn't grenaded.

In and out vary stylish albeit, conservatively styled as sporty cars go. Had a friend who had one for a few years when they first came out . He loved it. I rode in it once. A bit small when you are 6'2" 240. But still very nice for the right person.
