    I daily a 2000 TT coupe (no rear spoiler) with over 105k miles. They are way more reliable than people think. Lots of owners drive theirs regularly with 200k+. My usual problems are plastic interior pieces not holding up due to the sun and heat here in California. Mine is stock but TTs are easily modded too. The MK1 enthusiast community online is really supportive. Fun cars, the TT.

      My dads has 289000kms or about 180000 miles on his. Only issues have been with the battery, the motor for the convertible and I think he just had the turbo replaced. Going to put in a 3 inch downpipe and a better clutch over the winter.

    Since when was it the most-hated roadster? They actually were loved when the mk1 was released. Maybe they’re hated now because “car enthusiasts” would rather have the R32 or GTI, but I wouldn’t generalize the TT’s appreciation over that.

    • @perpelle
      @perpelle 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Because of the rounded (beetle-ish) looks, FWD and the "meh" performance. A proper hairdressers car.
      Even the miata is less hairdresser.

    • @benb2856
      @benb2856 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      By today’s standards? Sure. When it was first released, it wasn’t a “hairdresser’s car”. Also, most made were not FWD.

    • @perpelle
      @perpelle 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@benb2856 Oh, sure it was, I even remember it.
      Don't know what to prefer. A front heavy FWD or a slightly less front heavy awd. They both lack power, especially the awd.

    • @dimitrist3561
      @dimitrist3561 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      pelleper A front mount intercooler and a simple reflash brings it up to 280 horsies. For European standards, that’s quite respectable. And the 20v engine has heaps of potential with aftermarket mods. Stock? Yes it’s slow, but you don’t buy a car with the 20v to keep it stock

    • @perpelle
      @perpelle 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dimitrist3561 You always compare stock vehicles, especially when they are new.
      Very few people are willing to void the warranty when buying a new car.

    I miss my old TT, it wasn't that reliable but I had a lot of fun in it. Just a tip, on the air vent controls, if you press the "return" button and the "UP" button at the same time, you will unlock the ECU stats view, and you can check the engine temperature, sensor values, etc ( you have to use the temperature knobs to select the program to go up and down, from 0 to 89. Nice review by the way.

    There was a trial in Germany which said those crashes were not due to the car but for the lack of experience in fast cars of those drivers who crashed. By the time the trial was finished, Audi had modified the ESP system (making it more understeery), added dead weight in the back and also added the rear spoiler.

    I just put mine on collector's insurance (not a convertible, but a coupe), and I can't wait to drive it again. One caveat about the 225hp TTs is that the rear brake calipers are only shared with the 20th Anniversary Edition and 337 GTIs, so if it's been stored for a long time with the emergency brake engaged, you will probably have to rebuild or replace the rear calipers.

    A fantastic car and and amazing review!
    I've owned my nimbus gray 225 Quattro for over 4 years now - if I may offer a word of advice:
    If you don't mind eventually replacing every single vacuum line (due to age and the added stress/pressure), I FULLY recommend an ECU reflash. Doesn't need to be custom - stick to reputable, keep-it-safe tunes such as APR. The SECOND I put my foot down after the tune the car immediately felt like that's how it should've come from the factory. Do yourself AND your TT that favour - it's ABSOLUTELY worth it, with virtually no downsides (except for slowly uncovering weak links in the system, brought on by cracking/aging rubber/plastic hoses).
    Also, VERY IMPORTANT - that Quattro differential needs its fluid changed. Roughly every 2-3 oil changes.
    I have taken my car to MULTIPLE mechanics that said "Nah, that system is self-contained, it's sealed for the lifetime of the vehicle" - it's not. Most of the time they're looking at similar engine/chassis designations, whereas MOST 225 Quattros have a Haldex that DOES need oil changes. They're slightly more expensive than a regular oil change, and need a specific tool, but if you can't find a mechanic who'll do it (and you've confirmed by VIN that your car DOES indeed require them) do yourself a favour and buy the tool, do it at home - it's not a difficult job.
    Your soft top latch is also going to start failing eventually - dealership quotes something like 1100 dollars to replace it - it's a mechanical fault. The spring sags with time, which just means when the soft top "hook" latches it's not pushing the metal tab (top left part above the windshield) to contact the metal to close the circuit - I cut a small piece of cardboard and literally fixed it for a penny.
    Also consider upgrading the battery with an AGM - Audi TTs of that era are little gluttons when it comes to parasitic draws, and our battery tray is a sort of odd size, where most batteries that fit won't provide a decent CCA. Look into Optima red tops, Somebody mentioned either the 34R or 35R should fix, and give you over 700 CCA while providing a massive warranty.
    Also, very much would appreciate if you know a reliable place that does instrument cluster repairs on those cars - my speedometer reset itself incorrectly, so now while stationary I'm doing -38 mph. Great if you're driving with a passenger that's terrified of high speeds, not ideal for anything else! I know there's plenty places that advertise it online, but I was wondering if anyone has a place they'd swear by/actually had a really good experience with, as that's the only -real- issue I've ever had with the car.
    CHEERS! Enjoy your TT ownership, and GET THAT ECY TUNE. Also, HIGHLY recommend a 42 Draft Design cold air intake PLUS 42 Draft Design 3 inch downpipe. You can argue all day that it's overkill unless you're going with a bigger turbo, but anyone arguing that hasn't heard what the car sounds like with those mods. EASILY worth 1000 dollars for the exhaust note you get - it's another one of those "this is how it should've been from the factory" scenarios!

      Would love to go stage 1, haldex controller, blahblahblah but half the stuff on this bucket doesn't work at relatively low mileage. not worth the pain in the ass of constant upkeep when a mildly boosted AND reliable Civic would blow the doors off this thing. A geo metro with 50 series tires has way more grip, probably bcuz it doesn't weigh 3400lbs?!! I get the whole boosted Karmann Ghia w awd thing but this model strikes me as something I need to sell.

    There was a 3rd engine option. The 3.2 L six naturally aspirated, putting out 250 hp and a lot more torque with the DSG paddle shifted gearbox and Quattro handling.
    Mine is the SLine version, with a better suspension and rear spoiler, larger discs, and 18” wheels. It’s not the fastest thing from 0-60 in 5.7, but it’s faster than most from 50 to 100. No RWD car can keep up with the Quattro DSG on twisting roads, partly because no manual can shift as perfectly nor as fast as that dual auto clutch. And the 3.2 has a much richer exhaust note.

    I drove the first one in the uk of the car transporter . Great car iconic !! Then we had the baseball interior show up and everyone hated . I didnt it looked cool . Then the manager dicided to paint the Alloys grey like the car . Not the best idea 🤣 lovely video well done my friend and stay safe. By the way it was an American driver who overturned his TT on the freeway in germany ,when they came with no spoilers. I can remember them and saying how dangerous that will be .

    My kid found a pristine 2001 TT Quattro Coupe for $3K. The engine was rebuilt so it has way less miles on it than the 221K miles that are indicated on the odo and runs nearly perfectly. The only knock is that the AC out. Everything else works and it's very quick.

    Your front struts need new upper rubber mounts. There should not be much space between the rubber top and the frame when viewed with hood up. They are $20-$30 at Rock Auto and a very common wear item on MK4 VW and these TT's are the same type of strut. I have had my 225 coupe for 2 years now and love it!

    I was driving behind one of these things on the highway. It was smoking a lot. By a lot I mean look up the drive down scene from Uncle Buck. Literally that amount of blue smoke, sounded like the engine was totally f****ed. I was amazed that the thing was driving at all.

    Thanks Tommy. Another interesting car that is somewhat forgotten. Like the Subaru. I look forward to more videos. AWD? Off-roading maybe?

      I can't forget it, because I own one (2004 roadster quattro 225hp, 6 speed manual, Ocean Blue/blue top/blue leather interior). I get a nice reminder whenever I go out the kitchen door... ;-)
      I'm sure you're joking, but off road is a definite no -- once went to 'rescue' a young lady friend on a campout, drove up the country driveway into the woods at night, the road got steadily worse, ended up getting gravel stuck in a few places underneath. Not very much ground clearance at all, I've even scraped pulling out of a gas station in town...

    My uncle had pretty much this exact spec'ed car. I never liked the styling as it seemed inspired by a Beetle, but it was fun to rip around in. That said, when he got rid of it and purchased a Porsche I was much happier (he's the kind of cool uncle that, at the time, let his idiotic, twenty-something nephew [yours truly] tear around the Province in it on weekends).

    I'm sorry, but have to jump in again because I heard something that always makes me smile. People are hooked on the idea of AWD being the only option in places that gets some snow (granted, Colorado doesn't just get some snow, but a lot), or at least FWD, and RWD is taboo for those people. I beg to differ, though. Tires and light weight are the biggest factors for being a good snow car, not the drivetrain. A well-balanced RWD with snow tires will always be a better choice than a not so well balanced FWD or AWD car on all-season tires. Let's also not forget that snow-handling is not only about getting a good start from a stop, but turning and braking as well, which goes back to weight and tires.

    Tommy I love your reviews, they always feel so honest and genuine. Only you could make me buy an Audi by explaining how cheap the parts are, I never would have thought they used VW parts under this even though cars and trucks are my life.

    Where did you get the title “MOST HATED ROADSTER” from and then start to sing it’s praises? I have own one after owning 6 Mazda MX-5’s and 3 Classic Lotus Elans and can safely say - the Audi TT Mk1 is the most satisfactory 2 seater sports roadster I have ever owned.

    I'm looking at one for sale. The guy says it's got a subtle thumping or thudding noise coming from the rear, but it still drives super smooth. Any ideas about what's the matter, how much costs to fix ? Any questions I should ask before I give $3500 to the guy? It's got 144,000 miles. And is the 1.8T Hope to hear from someone soon 🙏🏻

    Most hated ever? I've owned two TT 225 roadsters and when I sold them I had more people trying to buy them than any other car I've owned, save for a couple of 911s. I loved both roadsters and everyone I know with one loves them as well.
