2015 Chevy Silverado 6.2L V8: Is it the Fastest?

  • ( www.TFLtruck.com ) This 2015 Chevy Silverado 1500 has the big 6.2L V8, an 8-speed automatic transmission, and Max trailering package. It's a Double-cab 4x4. It's got the 3.42 rear axle ration and it can tow up to 11,900 lbs. So, can it be our fastest truck? Is it quicker than the 2.7L EcoBoost F-150? Also, how about the braking performance?

    The 6.2L is the engine you want.
    it's a bullet proof LS3 design with torque in mind.it still beats the eco-blow engines in fuel economy while towing.

    I am so excited. I know it’s multiple years past now. But I just drove 80 miles to purchase a 2500HD with this motor package. Also came with a 8ft stainless v-plow. One owner super low mileage. Values are high now but I got it 5k below blue book and it’s pristine. Bought it with cash which felt so good. Picking it up tomorrow with my plates. Gonna be my primary work truck with a brand new 2023 dump insert. Replacing my heavily rusty 2006 f550. So no more dot bullshit and I can work in comfort and class. Been a ford guy for 12 trucks straight. But I have to admit this is one sexy truck. I worked so hard to be able to buy this in cash. I’m not a wealthy guy so this was a huge deal for me. And I couldn’t be happier.

  • @ldodom
    @ldodom 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In the final analysis it's really all about cost of ownership, comfort and dependability. Once the warranty runs out these will become paramount qualities that overshadow whether one truck gets to 60 half a second quicker. In normal day-to-day driving, 0-60 becomes irrelevant (so long as its not painfully slow). When was the last time you waited at a traffic light, revving the engine, and stomped it when the light changed? If we drove that way routinely, it would just be a matter of time until we got T-Boned by a vehicle running a red light. However, I totally get it that this is merely a benchmark.
    Thanks for the post, Nathan. By the way ... You did an awesome job addressing the manufacturer reps at the Golden Hitch Awards!

    I had a 2012 ecoboost and when I had foot in it, it wasn't very eco-friendly ; I like my new 2015 Chev 6.2 better in regards to power and highway milage, I also like the chrome and dislike the double cab door's, the old extended cab door's that opened 180 ° are way nicer to load stuff in the back when you are alone. If Ford still had the 6.2, I probably would have gotten one with the super cab.

    I wonder if there might be a test of the standard V6 variants of these half tons, as those are the only affordable variants. I happen to have one myself, but as they compare, I'm not too sure. Something I've found with cylinder deactivation though, is that the lower axle ratios actually help fuel mileage. The only way I can explain this is that the ecm responds to torque demands, and the lower the demand (in this case when torque is better multiplied), the more it will deactivate cylinders. I typically get in excess of 26 mpg on highway trips (best was 27.5, and it was still climbing when I ended my trip), and even up and down mountains here in CO I average about 22. Around town it really varies due to the type of drive (short or long). Interestingly, the GM 5.3L 3.08 rear end truck has a much lower towing capacity than the 4wd v6, and the same economy rating. Due to my own real world testing, I wonder how much a 3.73 v6 would have been rated for. The throttle mapping is horrible, though you get used to skipping the first inch altogether. The more moderately aggressive my acceleration, the better fuel economy I get, as it switches to 4 cylinders faster. The V6 also uses 5w30 and less of it, so it is cheaper to maintain than said V8, as well as one less balance shaft, so it's likely more reliable. However, it is hilarious how little space a pushrod v6 takes up under the hood.

    Owned a 6.2L High Country Silverado long bed since new. It's been a great truck. I haven't needed to go up to a 3/4 ton because of this truck. Here's my one complaint - the plastic tailgate bearing is shoddy and breaks in extreme cold. We occasionally get that in some places in the USA. Been fixed a few times but never lasts. Now I just live with it and grease it up a little bit.

    I still don't understand why they do these tests at a mile above sea level. The majority of the population lives at or near sea level. As for the the fan boys, down here in Texas those new 6.2s always blow the doors off the new ecoboost trucks. Not to mention the ford's are like 500 lbs lighter too. Only reason those ecoboost are quick at a mile above sea level is the turbos. They force more air than a naturally aspirated engine would where there is less oxygen to burn.

    • @mikeserenar
      @mikeserenar 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Marc Monson Squeezing gobs of power out of a smaller engine via turbo has been done for decades, it works on weekend sports cars, but the idea was shelved on pickups due to durability, but with Ford trying to rename the word Turbo into "Ecoboost", they dumped a over boosted small engine in a big pickup. OK, Engineering, Muphy's law, and Common Sense will tell you it's a recipe for disaster. I'm all for looking for big MPGs, but this engine doesn't gain much, the aluminum body is what got the extra mpg.
      Here in a couple of years, The old saying Found On Road Dead will be making a come back.

      Mike n Serena The new EcoBoost comes with a CGI block, forged pistons, forged crank, forged and offset con rods.. you sound like another wanna be engineer without knowing the facts. Never mind the fact that these engines have been out since '10 with no major reliability issues. Go on autotrader, look up used F150 V6, put in 'Ecoboost' key words, and see all trucks still running with no issues for sale that have many miles on them, and get over your stereotyping.

And since your name is ecoboost rules, then you know all about turbos and there efficiency. But I'd say you are just a Ford fanboy, and have no clue how a turbo works. And that Fords are the poor man's luxury car. They will always need to be worked on, and when they do it will be stupid and very very expensive shit to break.

    I much prefer the suicide "clam-shell" door to the stupid smaller doors chevy & dodge put on their extended cabs "quad cabs". The simple reason is this: when you put stuff in the back like I do, it's annoying to have to walk around the back side of the door to open it. Would much prefer to open the back door where I open the driver door, on an extended cab version anyway.

    If you guys still have this truck, could you please do one of those MPG tests the way that Andre tested the RAM 2500? I see a lot of arguing going on in the comments section. I have at least one more thing that we can argue about...I would really LOVE to see a 0 to 60 test and a MPG test done with a truck such as this one with the 20" wheels and the exact same tests done on the exact same truck with 17 or 18 inch wheels. I'm betting that the MPG results will be better with the smaller wheels AND I'd bet that the 0 to 60 times will be better with the smaller wheels. To make it even more fair, let's make sure that the tires are the same type...meaning that they both be made by the same manufacturer and that they both be either all-season tires or whatever other types of tires, such as all-terrain tires, etcetera. What do you guys think?
    Besides what I have already written, I still think that what ALL the manufacturers are doing to increase MPG numbers are really good ideas. Ford is dramatically lightening their trucks by using aluminum instead of steel. Chevy/GM is using cylinder-deactivation. RAM is using diesel, and they are ALL adopting transmissions with a higher number of gears. Dodge started using an eight speed and GM and Ford are eventually going to have as many as ten-speeds. I think that over time, we will all learn which of these ideas are the best and which ones might not work well for trucks. And eventually they will ALL utilize the best ideas, whatever those may actually turn out to be.

    I agree with Nathan about the chrome. I feel it takes away from the truck. That's why I like the GMC Sierra instead. It's got better looks that are less based on chrome, yet it costs the same and is the same truck underneath. That is pretty decent fuel mileage for a 6.2 liter V8. True. I worked for a GM dealer, Dodge fiat, and i own a Ford, Brother does too, Ecoboost. Also worked at a bodyshop, so Ive driven EVERYTHING. They are all Great. The lower trims is where ANY of the trucks suck. That being said, i just wished the Tundra didnt suck so bad, ( FUGLY, Poor MPG, Dated interior & Tech. )

    What Ford was able to do with that small V6 and two turbos is astonishing really. A lot of HP and Torque while having amazing MPG. I prefer Chevy but if I was in search of a new truck, I'd probably go for the V6 F150.
    Also should to note, the fact that the 6.2L is supposed to get 15 MPG is pretty good considering my old 07 Silverado with a 5.3L V8 was getting way worse MPG. I do feel as though the 5.3L got up to 60 a bit quicker than almost a whole Litre more of an engine thats newer, but it also did way a bit less as it was a shorter box and ext. cab. That said I wouldnt pay $50k for that

      +Justin Laturnus Not a GM fan but the 6.2 does 5.8 0-60 at sea level,highe rup you get slower times and worse mpg.....These 6.2 trucks get the same as a 2.7 Eco Boost Ford...A buddy has a 6.2 GMC and gets 19-20 mpg average !! I get 18.5 in my QuadCab HEMI RAM and 6.1 best 0-60...I cant hook up I have a Tradesman Black Express QuadCab and 3.92 non posi ..Turbo's on anything is the magig..Chrysler had 146 hp turbo 4cyl cars in the 80's that beat 5.7 Camaro's and 5.0 Mustangs...Turbo's are magic..and adding 2 of them is great if you don't keep them long...If you buy a truck for the long haul get a big gas V-8 and you have reliability and power..I also have 2 buddies with 2012 Eco Boost F-150's exact same truck same gear ratio's etc..even verified by checking them out ourselves and 1 truck driven by the obese driver is 2 car lengths ahead of the skiny guy in a drag race...Even changed drivers and the slower truck was still slower..thats turbo's for you ..once you have 50,000 miles they start to fade out and you lose power...and the powerful non Turbo V-8's still have full power until 250,000 miles etc...

    Ford fanboys are so funny; they'd rather have a truck that's 0.05 seconds faster than one that will be more reliable in the long run. That NA engine will out last that turbo charged gasser by a long shot.

    • @kingdaniel3519
      @kingdaniel3519 9 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      farmerallis Chevy fanboys are a curious bunch. They would rather have a truck that is 0.05 seconds slower and that has rampant issues with it's AFM system crapping out and ruining motors.

      goatnuts12 I don't know what you're smoking, but there are no body rust issues with GM products. I have a pretty substantial spot on the body of my GM truck that has no paint on it whatsoever (hit something that scratched all the paint off) and it hasn't even started to rust and it's been like that for 8 years now.
