@@zoegartham312 Idk if that's cringe in any way. I know I am now talking about a different band, but I mean I was introduced to the band Architects by the game Watch Dogs Legion. Not the greatest game, but once I heard the song Hereafter, my interest was immediately obtained.
finally Poets of the Fall - I'm a metalhead but these guys never fail to impress me - please react to more songs of them, it's worth every second of it
It's the lyrics and musicianship. But they can also go hard and they do in the Old Gods of Asgard songs that they wrote for Remedy games. I keep wishing for a full album in Old Gods style.
I feel it comes through to studio somehow how they play live. Because live they are so much louder, so much in your face like rock and metal and not nearly as soft even when playing the same songs. I was really surprised how different the live performance was. So much heavier than expected.
Marko Saaresto is one of the most emotional singers out there. Such warmth, so much control, so unique. Poets of the Fall is the most underrated band to ever exist. I literally tear up everytime I see reactions like these, witnessing people's first encounter with Poets, it's amazing! You're in for a treat.
every time i tell someone about that band, they don´t know them. When i show them some songs they find quite good. The emotions in their songs are so rare and pure. Mainstream music doesn´t capture this anymore.
I'm just so sad they never play in Italy. I'd love to see them live. Marko is one of my favourite male singers, and Carnival of Rust is a song I can listen to on loop for hours.
Poets of the Fall is SO underrated. This song hits hard for me. It's an emotional trip on how we gradually lose our innocence throughout our lives (the game of avoiding failures) while our true self shows up (when true colors will bleed). The scenes with the little girl being allured to a carnival full of lustful men reinforces this even more.
PotF have had their songs in all of Remedy Game Studio's games, beginning with Max Payne 2. The one that got me was WAR from Alan Wake. Then I found out that they also produced music under their fictional band name of Old Gods of Asgard (also from Alan Wake). Love them!!!! Haunting songs.
I can see that but I think it's about a relationship. He realizes that his inability to own up to his past mistakes and his own defects of character(the same 2 verses you wrote) were a big part of why it ended. Regardless of his recognition that the relationship was doomed and had harmed him(Water creates rust), he still wants her to come back to him.
@@HistoryNerd808 Yes, the song is clearly about an obsession. I understand that the lyrics can be open to interpretation, but the chorus literally spells it out for you how the singer begs the person to stay with him.
FINALLY! Not enough Poets of the Fall love out there. I discovered them back in 2014 and can't understand why they have not broken out in a big way. Also...this is a great breakup song. That ending! "Don't walk away,, when the heart is yearning..." Breaks me everytime Temple of Thought would be my vote for the next of theirs. The studio unplugged version
I'm 100% sure she would looove Temple Of Thought unplugged. In that song Marco really shines and it's my favorite from them. I've been listening to this band almost daily since their first album released and it blows my mind everytime how good they are. There is no bad song from them so far. Fantastic band
Well, this is an unexpected, and pleasant, surprise. To whomever requested this song, thank you. Poets Of The Fall are highly underrated and overlooked (at least here in the states).
Thank you Elizabeth and everyone who recommended this - you brought me back a decade and a half to when this song broke. I'm emotional just listening to this and seeing such a powerful reaction. Finns are a small people, and while we have many bands that took off internationally, it's always somehow a proud moment when Finnish music gets picked up and recognized. But this was a beautiful song, both in writing and performance, and the music video itself is amazing: Not just Marko's singing but his acting as well - just look at the way he slams his palm on the glass at "when the heart is yearning", or that look in his eyes when the camera fully catches it - is so emotionally powerful. Then there's the makeup and costumes, the set design, cinematography, lighting, effects, all of it. Seeing Elizabeth reacting to it and excited and moved by it added another layer. Thank you again.
I've been listening to PotF since Lift was released, and I think Carnival is still their best song. Lyrically, musically, vocally, and the video as well. And it really passed the test of time.
I thank Remedy games, specifically Alan Wake for turning me onto Poets of the Fall. I think it was the song "War" and it came on an in-game radio...I had to stop and just stand motionless in that little warehouse so I could listen to the entire song. The slimmed down re-recordings of select songs they did in the Alexander Theatre are nothing short of incredible. I hope Elizabeth will get around to these...it'd be cool if she'd react to the original song, then the Alexander Theatre version in the same video!
Poets of the Fall are now very popular thanks to Alan Wake 2 musical scene... the song Herald of Darkness is an amazing thing and was connected to the game in such a pristine way, one of the best moments in gaming in a long time!!
I discovered this band, not from Max Payne, but from Alan Wake. Marko has such a unique voice and the band is incredible! I love the genre shifts that they effortlessly pull off and the depth of the lyrics. They haven't put out anything that hasn't been a pure joy to listen to over and over again! My overall favorite song that I will never tire of is My Dark Disquiet. I will put it on repeat when I'm driving and sing along.
I think they're even more impressive in Alan Wake and Control, where they're playing the part of a completely different band in a different genre of music... and _nailing_ it. And then singing about that, as Poets. Old Gods of Asgard are absolutely one of my favourite metal bands, which is confusing when they don't actually exist.
It's about time she covered Poets Of The Fall! Been a fan of their's since Max Payne 2 featured Late Goodbye. I hope this gets them some more recognition in the US. I never meet someone that knows about them.
Remedy does all they can to promote them - Alan Wake had a bunch of their songs on radios across the game on top of the Old Gods of Asgard deal, and so does CONTROL for much the same reason
And ironically out of all Finnish music this feels most like it was aimed at US audiences. For Finnish taste it's a bit too soft to be really mainstream rock. Or too rock to be mainstream pop.
When I was in St. Petersburg a few years ago I wore one of my PotF t-shirts and my room mates (2 finnish guys) were surprised I knew this band. :) Been following this band since Max Payne 2 aswell and can confirm: they are amazing live! :)
i remember back when this came out half the youtube comments were people swearing it was all autotuned because they couldn't believe how good he sounded, really underappreciated vocalist
@@hawkins347 even better live if the band does their usual dance during this song. Not only they're great musicians, they also have such an amazing chemistry on stage.
His English is also spot on. Out of all Finnish singers I've heard, no one is so hard to guess not being a native if you only hear the voice. All that emotion and detail *in a foreign language*.
Also You should not expect true masterpice to be appreciated by the masses. Most popular songs in the charts are rarely something of a quality nowadays, and more of an agenda. If You know what I mean 🌈
The amount of effort they put into their songs is astounding. Every track, even on the same albums, sound different and unique, built from the ground up. I just discovered them in December and I haven't stopped listening to them since.
POTF is one of those bands that will never have major success but those of us lucky enough to hear them and feel what they are putting out are truly blessed. They have so many hidden gems that every fan has their personal favorite that speaks to them.
I agree completely and despite being a diehard fan of POTF I wouldn't claim to love all of their songs. I first heard Lift and was shortly introduced to Carnival of Rust thereafter, but still my favorite song remains Roses cause, as you mentioned, it resonates with me and just clicks perfectly.
I almost dropped my keyboard when saw the thumbnail. YES! My boys Poets deserve recognition! haven't even seen the episode yet but I KNOW the reaction is going to be amazing
If you've played or have seen games from Remedy Entertainment, like Max Payne 2, Alan Wake, Control, you've heard their songs. This is how I found the band. Their keyboard player & composer "Captain" was a friend of Remedy's founders from the demo scene, as he had been doing music for computer demos. When Max Payne 2 came out, PotF did the theme song, "Late Goodbye", for it and they have been doing music for Remedy games ever since. My first time hearing them was their song "Lift" on the Futuremark graphic demo / 3D card benchmark test software, which, at the time, was connected to Remedy, until Futuremark branched into a seperate company. The second time was when I heard them play an acoustic version of Late Goodbye on a Finnish late night Talk Show. Besides doing music under their own name for Alan Wake, they even pose as a fictional traditional Heavy Metal band Old Gods of Asgard, that is part of the plot of the game, half of their songs in the game OST credited to Poets and the other half to OGoA.
I remember when I first heard this song, I had no real clue what I was listening to at first because it came up in my Spotify at random. By the end of it, I remember being choked up and teary-eyed without being able to legitimately put the reason why into words. Love this song, this group, and Marko's stupidly incredible vocal abilities.
I have hurt worse than I ever have the last year or two, and this song came my way a few weeks ago, it gave me my music back, and found the loss and pain inside that I couldn't find a way to understand. A song of the soul. The pain and sadness at the end as he sings "Don't walk away when the world is burning/heart is yearning" hits hard.
Marko Saaresto is one of Finland's, if not the world's, best singers. Unfortunately, they have never made it through worldwide, even though they have been involved in really big productions...
I am so excited for this! Poets of the Fall have been my favorite band for years, and while I believe every song they do is some kind of impossibly amazing magic, Carnival of Rust is by far my absolute favorite song in all of time and space - I've described it many times as the most perfect song ever written (to me, anyway ☺), and as a songwriter, it's the bar I measure everything I do by. Thank you so much for listening and reacting to it!
Nice! I'm from Finland and I've seen Poets of the Fall live 3 times, 2 times in the audience, both times together with my wife and once while working on the concert security. I think I've bought 5 of their albums on CD. Plus, of course, those Remedy games they've played on, like Max Payne 2, Alan Wake, Control. In Alan Wake, not only do they contribute to the OST with their own name, they also have a funny cameo playing as Old Gods of Asgard, an old, forgotten, heavy metal band, that links in to the events of the game in a major way. A couple of band members are locked in the same mental asylum Alan gets committed to and later, their music and stage props actually help Alan fight the forces of evil! The DLC to Control links that game to the world of Alan Wake and both PotF and OGoA appear on the soundtrack. Captain, the keyboard player and composer of Poets was a friend of Remedy's founder since the day they were both in the computer demo scene, Captain using his pseudonym while doing Amiga MOD music. MOD is a music file that has both the instrument samples and the notation, written with a so-called tracker program, a special program where you write the notes in text and the instrument numbers and effects in hex number format. Typical tracker programs would be SoundTracker on Amiga or FastTracker on MS-DOS.
@@morriganmoonglow2712 They have been to the US, but as an indie band, financing tours themselves, it is really expensive and difficult to arrange. A trip to Europe could mean catching a few gigs when they are touring.
Since you talked about vocal range (and you're so right about how Marko uses all those little nuances and dynamics to make this so emotive without needing to span a huge range), I definitely want to mention that Marko absolutely does have a wide vocal range, it's just not displayed in this particular song. We as fans have a soft spot for his falsetto as well, and a song that I think really shows how wide Marko's range is would be Daze--it spans from his rich baritone in the verses all the way into his awesome falsetto in the choruses. Another beautiful song you should definitely listen to is Cradled in Love, which is built very much around his falsetto range, and False Kings is an excellent example of his deeper resonant baritone.
"It's so hard to pause... That was really hard to pause" is the best description of this song. Funny enough i found this channel through this song and I want to say I also loved the emotion and absolute detailed description and analysis of the song that you showed us. I already loved this song but after watching this video I love AND respect it on a whole different level. Thank you
YES OMG! i almost dropped my phone when i read the title - PotF has been one of my favorite bands for years, and they're so unknown in the U.S., I'd love for them to get more recognition here! Marko's voice is seriously unreal. Twilight Theatre and Signs of Life are kickass albums, very much hoping you'll listen to more of them. (hello fellow alan wake & control fans!!!)
an unnecessary addendum but i haven't seen anyone mention it yet - Marko's mastery over the English language is really, really extraordinary, and i mean that wholeheartedly. his lyrics are wild rides through reference and rhyme - the entirety of the Twilight Theatre album is a good example of that, but the songs Given and Denied and 15 Minute Flame are probably the strongest examples. (okay, getting down off my soapbox now lol)
@@lydiablues English is a compulsory subject in schools in Finland from around when the kids are 7-9 years old to when they're 19 these days. I'm not sure what it was like when Marko was in school, so this is just some guess work on that. Either way many Finns are surprisingly fluent in English, even if they're not often this good at hiding the accent.
Omg Twilight Theater is on my top favourites ❤️ The whole album is amazing. It has such a nostalgic yet matured feel to it for me. Not sure how else to describe it lol. I can listen to it however I'm feeling and it takes me to the same emotions every time. And yes, the way they write the lyrics one has to be extremely proficient in English. Given and Denied is my favourite by them for that reason; the emotions in the words and phrases, the way he articulates certain emotions when singing, and the live performance album was even better IMO.
@@myfaceismyshield5963 Actually, English isn't compulsory in Finnish schools. You have to start learning some foreign language, but you can also pick for example French or German if it's offered by the school. English is the most common one by far, though, and in many schools it's the only option. Marko's mother has apparently spent a lot of time in England and taught the language to her son from start, so he's basically bilingual. He has also studied English in University and spent time in the US and Ireland as an exchange student. That explains the lack of accent a lot.
He's so kind and well-spoken in person, you can't go wrong with that interview. But pick any of the 6 band members and the experience is exactly the same, they're all lovely.
Personally I would imagine Psychosis being quite interesting, considering he sings more "rock-ish" than this clean classical sound he has in this song which he also has in Daze, though Daze does have more movement in pitch instead of this song
I saw them live at a festival almost twenty years ago. The headliner of the night was a glam rock band I didn't really like, so I decided to check out some new, unknown band called Poets of the Fall that was playing on the smaller stage inside a festival tent. I still remember the goosebumps that attacked me the moment I stepped inside that tent. They were unreal live. Better than the studio version.
The most horribly underrated band in existence! Marko is an exceptional singer, lyricist and songwriter. And an amazing human being. Listen to more of his falcetto. Still one of the best live shows I've been to. You should check out their Revolution Roulette album, where he uses a different, grungy singing style.
Finally! I'm one of the many that have requested you do the Poets of the Fall. I can't wait to watch the full reaction. I also look forward to you doing some of their Alexander Theatre songs. You really get to enjoy Markos voice there.
Back again, rewatching this amazing analysis. Crying again. 20:35 - He's literally telling you not to walk away. Of course it's not easy to press pause when he's begging you not to...
There is a reason they are called POETS of the Fall, their lyrics are consistently brilliant: unique and interesting metaphors, turns of phrase, layered meanings. Glad to see you shining some light on one of my favorite bands!
His vocals are amazing. One of my favorite bands and have been listening to them for many years. Temple of Thought unplugged studio live video is one great example of vocals.
Yes! YES! I sat up straight and yell "Finally!" when I saw this announcement. Marko has a vocal presence and range you are commanded to pay attention to, and Im loving this reaction and breakdown! I DO hope you swing by more of their tracks and in particular "Lift". Please Liz, may we have some more? 💯💙
My first introduction to Poets of the Fall was Requiem for My Harlequin and I was completely, viscerally stunned by them. Mouth agape, unblinking, tunnel vision, bone chilled stunned. That voice didn't grab my attention, it demanded it, gripping me by the guts and refusing to relent. The lyrics hit in a place of vulnerability and total understanding on the second watch, along with the masterful videography and rich visual symbolism, I especially love the mirror scene. It was like watching modern folklore. Since then PotF have been my favorite band, and each new song of theirs I listen to provides that same, almost spiritually emotional experience. Tldr: DAMN these guys are good!
Elizabeth, you have to watch the Alexander Theater performances. There's 12 seperate live performances. Stripped down, no audience. You will not regret it. Amazing band.
Seriously.....the Alexander session for False Kings is I think the best example of how beautiful his voice is. That and there's a live version of Carnival that's not on you tube but it's also stunning.
Wow...just bought it and I'm glad I did. The arrangements are amazing and the vocals are world-class. I wish Elizabeth could look at these too to see how great Poets are.
110% agreed, the entire set is absolutely breathtaking - there's so much musical talent in every single one of them (and they're all performing so well together it becomes so much more than the sum of its parts too) it's nothing short of amazing.
Such an underrated band. Poets of the Fall deserve more recognition. His voice is so unique and the mastery he has over it is amazing to hear and really allows him so much storytelling.
Marko is killing it in live like in recorded stuff. Look out live and also ALEXANDER THEATER recordings. Flawless. Another hidden Finnish gem for world to finally hear!!
The first time I listened to it was almost 10 years ago. And it was introduced to me by a friend, who doesn't even speak English. But she was so touched by it. I listened to it many times afterwards... what I see in this video is loneliness and longing that he is almost screaming about at the end. About how people are so emerged into this material side (carnival of rust), they don't see each other. Like this girl in the video wearing a mask. People go past each other. It creates that feeling of isolation and loneliness eating you up from inside. Any of us can relate, I think. It's just the sad reality....
Incredible song, if you want more of him and hearing his falsetto, look up "Cradled in Love" and do their live performance of it. He has such a beautiful voice. Also HIGHLY recommend "My Dark Disquiet" from them as well
@@TallicatGames True, I really like that song, but it is is a bit long for a first listen. It could lose the last 2 minutes and not lose any lyrics. It is gorgeous, but not the best way to introduce someone to PotF.
This video is insanely well made. Holding up this well while being done in 2006 is crazy good. And the song is a classic on it's own right too. Underrated band in Finland.
As for the industry in general, 2006/2007 was also the breaking point for most of the music videos. That's when bands like POTF were still able to make videos like this one. By 2008 and forward the budgets started to go down fast because making music videos wasn't as profitable anymore for the labels. It's not a surprise that many early 2000s music videos felt like genuine films crafted with big money in comparison to what it is now for the most artists.
This was my first time hearing Poets of the Fall and WOW I absolutely loved everything about it: great vocals, amazing sound design and the story telling OMG! 🤡🎭🃏🎪🎠💖
All their stuff is of this quality, this is no exceptional track of theirs (even tho it is REALLY great). Congrats, your shuffle is only serving you PotF in the next time, because they will make up around 90% of your playlist. ;> This is a great rabbit hole to dig down in, all of their records are really great, even tho I tend to lean more towards their older records for some reason.
Rarely these days do you hear a male vocalist with such delicacy in his voice, especially in this genre. It's so so good and the video is an absolute work of art.
I am SO happy you finally found the time to review this underrated masterpiece! Your experience and expertise picks up every little detail of the song. Thank you.
I have never heard of this band before (like how that is possible, I do not know) but holy hat this is delicious!! Thanks for the hook up to the guy who requested this song every day for almost 2 years!! LOL Gotta love the dedication to his fave band!
The first time I heard POTF I was absolutely blown away. I could not believe I had never heard them before, that they weren't huge, that Marko's voice was so incredible. I actually cried several times on my deep dive into their songs. Carnival of Rust is one of my favourites that I always go back to because it's just so beautiful and your reaction to it is so on point to how I felt too. Its criminal how underrated they are but I'm glad for all of us who have found them ❤
Omg, can't wait! 'Hello Cabaret' from their latest album is another strong candidate for your channel. Honestly, there are so many great songs from Poets it's impossible to recommend enough without spamming the comment section.
I absolutely adore PotF. In a strange way, listening to Marko is always painful to me because of the amount of emotion he is able to share. The band are just spectacular. Olli's work on guitar is beautiful and they all compliment each others playing wonderfully.
'Late Goodbye' 'Jealous Gods' 'For You' 'Rise' 'Locking Up the Sun' 'Love Will Come to You' SO MANY great songs by PotF. But if you want to hear an absolutely incredible exhibition of Marko's falsetto control, you can't do better than 'Daze'. 🤯
Oh wow! I am so excited for this! His voice is amazing- it's like the vocal equivalent to a beautiful cup of coffee (Or tea!) ♥️ Every song of theirs is a poetic masterpiece, and each video is a work of art! ♥️
I'm so thrilled that you're reacting to Poets of the Fall! If you want to dig deeper, check out their ballad Cradled in Love. It's beautiful...I had it played at my mom's funeral. They have so much amazing work.
Just discovered your channel... Love the way you break down everything! Hope you do more Poets; they're brilliant. I first heard them in Alan Wake and was blown away by their sound and lyricism. The lead singers voice is so beautiful and unique and emotional. This song is seriously amazing.
This song was recommended to me by a Finnish guy I met online back in 2007! I was INSTANTLY hooked! Not only by the theme of the video, but the voice! Marko has one of the most soothing voices I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. I hope to one day see them in concert
You now know why no matter how much heavy metal, progressive metal or thrash metal I hear, I always put Poets of the Fall as one of my top 3 favourite bands. Their lyrics and artistry are so powerful, it sings to me, and I can't help but sing back. Edit: I'm also gonna go ahead and suggest another one! Please listen to "Love Will Come to You"!
YES! Finally Poets of the Fall on this channel, I was one of the people who has recommended them before, this has been one of my all time favorite bands for almost 15 years, the depth of these guys' lyricism and musicianship is almost unmatchable. I definitely would recommend to react to more of their stuff, Marko's voice goes way beyond this, where to even start, from the raspiness of his voice on songs like Psychosis and The Happy Song, to the lingering falsettos in songs like Cradled in Love and Daze. Definitely checkout something from the The Alexander Theater sessions, for a more intimate acoustic side of them, Angel is perfect there. Also their alter ego Old Gods of Asgard have produced many amazing stuff for the Remedy games, such as Alan Wake and Control. Cherry on top of the cake would be to get an interview with Marko, but that's wishful thinking on my end. Great content, keep it up!
Poets of the Fall is one of my favorite bands. I could and have listened to Moonlight Kissed on repeat for hours. That and Sleep are my two favorite songs.
Marko Saaresto just has one of the most beautiful and emotionally resonant voices I have ever heard. And the lyricism of the songwriter is just perfect. Such a woefully underrated band.
POTF is one of my fav bands ever. Trust me, studio version doesn't do justice to Mark's voice, their live performances are so compelling and beautiful.
IDK how he's doing it, but his voice somehow hits me right in the feels. My most favourite song by them is Angel from the Alexander Theater Session. Goosebumps every time I am listening.
This was the first time I heard Poets Of The Fall and I love it. There is something of Him or The Mission in the style.. and they are both great, so this was a great discovery for me.
enjoy the rabbit hole - they cover a lot of different styles throughout their music and are incredibly versatile. And of course Marko's voice is always stunning.
Thanks for doing this Elizabeth. Hoping for so long to hear your take on my favourite band. I really appreciate getting a better understanding of what makes Marko's voice so.. captivating .
Poets of the Fall on The Charismatic Voice, I am so hyped 😊! This is THE reaction I was waiting for... I love your enthusiasm and when you could not pause the video, it always translates with me like I cannot breathe. Your way of describing all the nuances in his voice and the emotions we all hear and feel but cannot fathom... until you put your expertise to it. Thank you! What a way to celebrate Poets of the Fall 20th anniversary 😘🥰 I hope you'll do more because you have just scratched the surface. Have a great week! PS: Requiem for my Harlequin (the only video from their latest album Ghostlight) but if you don't mind just audio Hello Cabaret... you'll have so much to say about this ❤ the full repertoire is worth listening to ... and as other mentioned The Alexander Theatre Sessions are breath taking... Carnival of Rust is there too. Rebirth, Jealous Gods, all of it really.
Apart having great lists of songs on their own name, POTF also have done great tracks for games on name The Old Gods of Asgard for Alan Wake and Control universes, having complete backstory.
I actually love the Old Gods tracks even more, as they often have a bit of a harder edge to them. And they work so well within the games. The section "Take Control" kicks off in Control is utter brilliance.
I have been a fan of the Poets since 2010 and this was the song that first hooked me. I have loved them ever since and I don't see that changing any time soon. It's their 20th anniversary this year and they're still going strong and am so proud of them! I am very glad that you found the Poets and are enjoying them too. Thank you for reviewing/analyzing my favorite song, it makes me happy to see videos like this.
This has always been the quintessential lyrical expression to me. No other song has ever beholden me to the depth of emotion as this has. Poets of the fall is extremely aptly named... And Marko carries that poetic expression to perfection. Even after all these years of listening to the song in a trance everytime, it's still beautiful to see it through new eyes. To hear how you see the poetry at play, and the way this amazing voice brings out the colors of those words, adding a further layer to the emotion and impact
I watched the official video many times today since I seen this reaction video. I'm upset I haven't heard of this band much sooner. I love watching videos and try and interpret the meaning behind it, and this one hit home really hard. I'm fascinated with this band and am looking forward to digging deeper into their art
Ahh, my long-time loved ones. PotF is like the old lover I go back to every now and then and the music does not age. at. all. Have seen them live a few times, they never stop to amaze me.
When I saw the song, I clicked immediately! Finnish band, one of my absolute favourite songs and music videos, haven´t heard it in a while, like years I think. Listened to it a lot when it came out in 2006 and loved it so much! Thank you for bringing it back for me, loved your analysis and it made me more aware why this song hit me so hard when I heard it for the first time. Cheers from Finland!
It makes me so happy you finally reacted to POTF! I'm mainly a heavy/metal guy but there are artists that to me feel like they have something to say. This guy for example is a master at using his voice to make us feel the lyrics. To convey the message instead of sing through them, or just show technical ability. POTF is such an under-rated band it's borderline criminal. I hope you do more of them in the future Elisabeth😊
I'm mostly a metal head, but I fell in love with this song the moment I heard it, and it still tears me up. Also the best video clip I've ever seen, thx so much for covering :-)
FINALLY! I've forgotten your channel already, but algorithms knew this was what I needed. Hope you check out more of their live performances. Marko has an amazing voice and great skills to use it 😍❤
This is one of the bands where the name is spot on. How could a band transport more poetry? Through words, sound and visual elements. The whole video in combination with the song is a masterpiece... The acting and expression of Markos is great. The character itself in this position is poetry....
To the guy who requested this song every day for almost 2 years - congrats, it’s finally here 😊
I remember asking for it maybe twice. I've been pestering Christi Bovee for over a year now, but to no avail! 🤣
It's me! I'm soooooo excited 🎉😂
Me too... every video I watched, i begged for this haha
lol I have 1.5 more years to go for Lovebites then!
Me 3 lol
Poets of the Fall is a criminally underrated band.
I know it may be cringe, but thank god for Control. My Dark Disquiet was my intro to this amazing band, and they go hard.

@Zoe Gartham some may even remember Poets all the way from Max Payne end credits. Def not cringy from Control you see! 😊
This is one of the very rare times I'll agree with someone using "underrated" in a comment. They really are, in my eyes!
I hit the like button, and the I realised that it went up to 70, so hit it again, to not disturb balance =)
finally Poets of the Fall - I'm a metalhead but these guys never fail to impress me - please react to more songs of them, it's worth every second of it
Ditto. Their music is softer than I usually listen, but it's so good the genre won't matter anymore.
@@JariJuslin yeah thats true, even im metalhead, potf is something i actually like to listen a lot even its not my type of genre :)
Agree. Most days I'm listening to the likes of BTBAM but I always find myself coming back to these guys
Couldn't have said it any better. Cheers.
I agree
I listened to this entire record and loved every single song from it! My other favorite song off this album is easilly the song "Delicious"
every time i tell someone about that band, they don´t know them.
The scenes with the little girl being allured to a carnival full of lustful men reinforces this even more.
completely underrated! I'm obsessed with "the Sweet Escape" and "Lift" right now.
"Don't walk away,, when the heart is yearning..." Breaks me everytime
Temple of Thought would be my vote for the next of theirs. The studio unplugged version
Same here. It pulls at your heart.
I'm 100% sure she would looove Temple Of Thought unplugged. In that song Marco really shines and it's my favorite from them. I've been listening to this band almost daily since their first album released and it blows my mind everytime how good they are. There is no bad song from them so far. Fantastic band
I'd agree, either Temple of Thought (Unplugged) or probably the Alexander Theater version of False Kings would be my recommendation.
First time ever seeing them.
i would like to see her reacting to Sleep, or Where we Draw the line
Same! I remember this song from release and totally forgotten about them until now.
I've been listening to PotF since Lift was released, and I think Carnival is still their best song. Lyrically, musically, vocally, and the video as well. And it really passed the test of time.
Same! I’m definitely listening to PotF tonight. ❤
I went to check the acting moment you mentioned and WOW
Old gods of Asgard 🔥🔥🔥
Did you listen to Late Goodbye from them? It's from Max Payne 2
I would squeel in glee if she covered that song. It's such an amazing ear-worm and so interesting. I think she's have a lot to talk about.
Petition for Elizabeth to react to either Take Control or Herald of Darkness! That would be absolutely fantastic!
Don't forget they did War for the first Alan Wake and the song in Control (was the song called Control too?)
I discovered Potf when our tv channel showed Lift music video and after that "Heroes" trailer with song Locking up the sun in it.
Just listened Tha Happy song from them. OMG, awesome sidetrack in Alan Wake.
Me too!
It's about time she covered Poets Of The Fall! Been a fan of their's since Max Payne 2 featured Late Goodbye. I hope this gets them some more recognition in the US. I never meet someone that knows about them.
A great game and a great band!
Did you know that Marko is portraying Vladimir Lem in Max Payne 1?
When I was in St. Petersburg a few years ago I wore one of my PotF t-shirts and my room mates (2 finnish guys) were surprised I knew this band. :)
Been following this band since Max Payne 2 aswell and can confirm: they are amazing live! :)
i remember back when this came out half the youtube comments were people swearing it was all autotuned because they couldn't believe how good he sounded, really underappreciated vocalist
I went to a live show a while back and let's say Choice Millionaire sounded exactly like the record. Marko is just that good.
@@hawkins347 even better live if the band does their usual dance during this song. Not only they're great musicians, they also have such an amazing chemistry on stage.
I didn't know there were so many people doubting his ability to sing 😳 He has such an outstanding voice, unique voice.
His English is also spot on.
Out of all Finnish singers I've heard, no one is so hard to guess not being a native if you only hear the voice.
All that emotion and detail *in a foreign language*.
The high notes he pops out on Choice Millionaire and Daze etc. Are awesome and unexpected. Daze is an amazing song.
The most underrated band here in Finland and maybe elsewhere too. Hopefully they'll get their very much deserved recognition eventually!
They have my recognition from Estonia ❤
I totally agree!
I listened them as soon as albums released, probably like 10-15 years ago. Feels like an eternity ago.
Also You should not expect true masterpice to be appreciated by the masses.
Most popular songs in the charts are rarely something of a quality nowadays, and more of an agenda. If You know what I mean 🌈
They are ok but I much prefer the old gods of Asgard 😉
I’ve always said that this song is art. More then commercial music.
And it came back in 2006
Especially with that video. It's just brilliant.
This will stay on my playlist til I die. Everything is perfect and this band doesn't copy anyone... They are on their own...
This masterpiece is a mixture of art, emotions, creativity and craft of a story telling❤❤❤❤
Hope you enjoyed it!
Such an underrated song! I always felt like listening to this song was like finding a treasure no one knew about but me 😂
underrated band, in general. i've been listening for POTF por about 11 years now, and i never get tired of it. they're my favorite band
I always thought no one knew about them, have no idea why I listened to this song over 10 years ago
@@vikingtropical Yes they are the definition of underrated! True gems
Had an even crazier experience. A few years back I saw the videos thumbnail and went and clicked it. Been a fan ever since. So many beautiful songs.
Oh yes.... Felt the same when I heard it the first time. When he bumps against the glass watching her leave while he can't get out still hits me....
@@rox1601 yes :(
Marko Saaresto is one of Finland's, if not the world's, best singers.
Lucky to have seen them. Probably never will in the US. 😑😕
I had covid when they came to London, love them. Determined to see them live
I never realised that Captain was part of this band. Well makes sense since these are great compositions.
Agree 100%. Daze is amazing.
Thank you
I have loved this song ever since I heard it last year.
Hearing your analysis has made me fall in love with it all over again. Thank you.
YES OMG! i almost dropped my phone when i read the title - PotF has been one of my favorite bands for years, and they're so unknown in the U.S., I'd love for them to get more recognition here!
Their song "Cradled in Love" is a MASTER PIECE!!!!
OMG you introduced me to Ren and now THIS?!?!?!?! This song is amazing! Getting ready to binge listen to them right now!
I think an interview with Marko Saaresto would be a great tea time. Also I think a great follow up to this song would be Daze by them
He's so kind and well-spoken in person, you can't go wrong with that interview.
@@Nikzzza i think Marko hits his highest note in Daze, that's why it's remarkable
But honestly, Poets have so many great songs.
@@DenisKublitsky his falsetto in hello cabaret are pretty amazing as well.
Daze is the perfect song to follow this up! 🖤
I`m a big motörhead, pantera and motley crue fan, but everytime i hear Cradled in Love from these guys, tears kicks in. Emotional rollercoaster...
Yes! The performances there are sooo good!
"They deserve to be heard". They do indeed. Thanks for analysing them, much appreciated.
Back again, rewatching this amazing analysis. Crying again.
20:35 - He's literally telling you not to walk away. Of course it's not easy to press pause when he's begging you not to...
We need more of poets of the fall, please!
There is a reason they are called POETS of the Fall, their lyrics are consistently brilliant: unique and interesting metaphors, turns of phrase, layered meanings. Glad to see you shining some light on one of my favorite bands!
You don't know what kind of music you're getting into, but when you will, you won't regret. A superamazing band like no other
His vocals are amazing. One of my favorite bands and have been listening to them for many years. Temple of Thought unplugged studio live video is one great example of vocals.
Couldn't agree more!
Yes!
Can't decide if War or Lift is my favourite. But they're all so good!
I agree, I agree! Pure ear candy!
Such an underrated band. Poets of the Fall deserve more recognition. His voice is so unique and the mastery he has over it is amazing to hear and really allows him so much storytelling.
One of the best voices in the world - and believe it or not, it sounds *even* better live! Will try to make this premiere for sure!
Also HIGHLY recommend "My Dark Disquiet" from them as well
I second 'Cradled In Love' - the 'live w/lyrics' on their official page.. well, that stuff hits different :-D!
Also Daze for high notes. Love My Dark Disquiet. Also love Requiem For My Harlequin. Honestly though, they have a lot of great songs.
@@Angelos42 I love all of those, but definitely recommend Beautiful Ones if you really want a tear-jerker of an emotional song.
@@TallicatGames True, I really like that song, but it is is a bit long for a first listen. It could lose the last 2 minutes and not lose any lyrics. It is gorgeous, but not the best way to introduce someone to PotF.
@@TallicatGames…such an overlooked song by them. It is absolutely beautiful. And yes, a tear jerker.
They do have 58 million views on this video which makes me happy
Stobe Harju is insanely genius man.
@@Bodypit1 Fun fact, they are, and always have been, and independent band. No labels backing them. That's partially why they are so underexposed.
This was my first time hearing Poets of the Fall and WOW I absolutely loved everything about it: great vocals, amazing sound design and the story telling OMG!
🤡🎭🃏🎪🎠💖
Welcome to the Cult! :D
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love your reactions so much...how you describe things and how talented you are! Please continue doing what you do ❤️
Rarely these days do you hear a male vocalist with such delicacy in his voice, especially in this genre. It's so so good and the video is an absolute work of art.
I am SO happy you finally found the time to review this underrated masterpiece! Your experience and expertise picks up every little detail of the song.
Thank you.
Oh thank you!
YES! Hope you keep reacting to them. Their TH-cam channel is a gold mine of beautiful preformances.
I have never heard of this band before (like how that is possible, I do not know) but holy hat this is delicious!! Thanks for the hook up to the guy who requested this song every day for almost 2 years!! LOL Gotta love the dedication to his fave band!
OH MY GOSH IM SO EXCITED FOR THIS!!! Brings back great memories of spending my summers in Finland with my Mummu ❤❤
Yes, I absolutely adore Hello Cabaret! When Marko sings near the end, "Are you alright my love...", my goodness how it hits me.
I absolutely adore PotF. In a strange way, listening to Marko is always painful to me because of the amount of emotion he is able to share. The band are just spectacular. Olli's work on guitar is beautiful and they all compliment each others playing wonderfully.
What's fun is that they sound ditto live. Amazing musicians and performers; one of the best musical acts of all time for me, hands down!
I love seeing first time reactions to anything from Poets of the Fall
I would love your analysis of Gillian Welch - Tear My Stillhouse Down. She also has a powerfully quiet voice that is filled with a lot of emotion.
Poets of the Fall have been great since the beginning and have always been a criminally underrated band
Thank you Elizabeth and your community. I haven't heard these guys before and am loving them instantly.
'Late Goodbye'
'Jealous Gods'
'For You'
'Rise'
'Locking Up the Sun'
'Love Will Come to You'
SO MANY great songs by PotF. But if you want to hear an absolutely incredible exhibition of Marko's falsetto control, you can't do better than 'Daze'. 🤯
Can you hear me is great for his voice too IMO
If you wanna win get a Finn, If you want good vocalist try Marko. Marko Hietala formerly known as bass player in a band called NW. Lift? Ville Valo..?
Locking Up the Sun is one of my favorite songs ever.
Not just his voice. She'd go ballistic for the visuals in the video.
Dnt forget "rewind"
"war"
"sleep"
"lift"
"Roses"
I must be dreaming 😍 thank you for promoting POTF!
Elizabeth, you are awesome for appreciating all those nuances.
Oh wow! I am so excited for this! His voice is amazing- it's like the vocal equivalent to a beautiful cup of coffee (Or tea!) ♥️ Every song of theirs is a poetic masterpiece, and each video is a work of art! ♥️
Oh gosh! This song just brings up so many memories! Great choice Elizabeth! Hope you will like it as much as I do😊
I'm so thrilled that you're reacting to Poets of the Fall!
Exactly. There's a lot of metalheads like us that can tune in to POTF and just melt.
Sleep is SOOO powerful!
Thanks for reminding me, I haven’t heard sleep in ages but I loved it so much
Marko Saaresto just has one of the most beautiful and emotionally resonant voices I have ever heard. And the lyricism of the songwriter is just perfect. Such a woefully underrated band.
Wow! Thank you! Greetings from Europe, Finland. I never thought you would listening this! We have great bands here. So maby someday, something more ❤
POTF is one of my fav bands ever.
Yeah, even The Alexander Theater Session version of the this with Triosis+ (a string quartet) is great.
Agree what angel from Alexander theater session might be the best one they've made. However every single song from that session is just amazing!
Never knew about these guys, but omg this song wrecked me! So beautiful. My thanks to those who stayed the distance and thanks Elizabeth...wow!
Children of the sun or love will come to you. Hits just as hard or harder. If you haven't already heard them. The videos also play the same energy.
Thanks for doing this Elizabeth. Hoping for so long to hear your take on my favourite band. I really appreciate getting a better understanding of what makes Marko's voice so.. captivating
.
I hadn’t heard this group before today. His voice reminds me of the lead singer from the group, Soen. Great song!
Apart having great lists of songs on their own name, POTF also have done great tracks for games on name The Old Gods of Asgard for Alan Wake and Control universes, having complete backstory.
And max Payne 2 as well.
I actually love the Old Gods tracks even more, as they often have a bit of a harder edge to them. And they work so well within the games. The section "Take Control" kicks off in Control is utter brilliance.
I love Old Gods! The Poet and His Muse. So good.
That's how I discovered them...Alan Wake soundtrack
@@LukeWatts85 I was already a fan when it came out. But my god did the heavy metal band scene kick ass
I absolutely adore watching people fall in love with Poets of the Fall in real time 😍😍 Just like I've been for the past 20 years
Alright! I adore Poets of the Fall, I'm so glad you finally got to this. Now to request 'My Dark Disquiet'! ❤
I watched the official video many times today since I seen this reaction video. I'm upset I haven't heard of this band much sooner. I love watching videos and try and interpret the meaning behind it, and this one hit home really hard. I'm fascinated with this band and am looking forward to digging deeper into their art
Seen these guys live twice and they are fantastic. Criminally under rated.
I saw them live last year. Fabulous show. Marco is a great performer. Love from Finland.
So glad to see poets of the fall getting some love. Such an awesome band and I hope you do more of their songs. Such an incredible band.
Ahh, my long-time loved ones. PotF is like the old lover I go back to every now and then and the music does not age. at. all. Have seen them live a few times, they never stop to amaze me.
Marko is one of my favourite vocalists of all time. SO glad to see him get some love here!
Would love to see more reactions of Poets of the Fall! They have so many great songs and I just love Marko's vocals so so much!
And the fact that they are just as good if not better live is just amazing. Seen them several times, and their gigs never dissappoint.
Their live performances are soooo great!
