I purchased my 3G off contract and it costed me 699 US dollars. Adjusted for inflation, they is 1020 dollars. The iPhone Pro starts at 999. You are now paying LESS for an iPhone.
in the UK iPhone 3g top storage was £340 as PAYG phone, with inflation adjusted that is £538. A lot cheaper than Nokia and SE flagships of the time(usually around £500-700) However base model iPhone is £800 now.
i remember all the flip phones had crazy prices like 700-800$ in late 2000s if you bought without a contract. esentially the price was fake because no one bought off contract. it was more of a contract cancelation fee. when you added up the price increase of the 2yr contract with the price of the phone, it was almost half of the off contract price.
Great work and interesting video. I think the explanation for the 12MP macros comes down to how macros are taken across all the supporting iPhones. On my 14 Pro, the macro mode will take a photo and the metadata will show that it is 12MP... this is simply not possible because the wide angle camera is only 12mp, and the final photo is a digital crop on the wide angle photo. To test this, you can take a photo with the wide angle camera as close as you can. Then, switch to the 1x zoom option (as opposed to 0.5x) and take the same photo in the same spot. You will find that the "macro" is simply a digital crop. How does this explain the 12mp files, though? It doesn't. I think the explanation is that apple uses machine learning to upscale all the macro photos. I think this is true of some zoom photos as well (in low light, apple has decided that a 3x crop is better than using the 3x camera... I have an explanation for that too, but this comment is already quite long). So the explanation for the 12mp macro photos on the 16 pro is the same as the 12mp 2x photos on the 14, 15, and 16 pro phones. They simply do not have to use upscaling on the macro photos anymore, so they are sharper because it is a raw 12mp. Who knows if you will have read this far or not, but thanks if you did. Shayne, if you see this, and it seems interesting, maybe you could make a video about it. I would myself, but I have no audience xD
_Oh, absolutely, you can capture that glorious 48-megapixel night shot-just as long as you avoid the flash and night mode, of course. All it takes is a "tiny" bit of effort afterward, and by that, I mean you’ll be doing some serious overtime with that RAW file in post-production. But hey, who doesn’t love a challenge when all you're trying to do is take a quick night photo? I mean, let's be real, 12 megapixels are already perfect for night photography because at 48 megapixels, well, enjoy all that lovely noise. 48. Megapixels is best for quick photo when you don’t have time to get the perfect zoom you can crop in the photo later. The 48 megapixels will perfectly the detail after the cropping._
The iPhone 16 Pro I just got is the first one that makes me think of storage as a consideration. I have the 256GB which is fine for most things other than photo and video. I have decided to treat the raw images from my iphone the same as I do with my "real" cameras. The RAWs live on a RAID harddrive and 6MP jpeg exports of these RAW files live on my iCloud. It has worked well for me so far. I value having all my photos available to me at a glance and this has worked well so far. No idea what to do about videos though.
I’ve got a thought about the soft edges. Have a shot of changing the “depth” I think it’s an artificial depth of field adjustment and it might be softening the edges to simulating a large aperture.
Ok phone photos. I started off like you on the iPhone 3GS, probably 8gb. I did used to get a higher storage phone but recently I would buy the lowest memory as I subscribed to iCloud and get 2tb. A low res version stays on the phone until you click it and then it downloads the high res version. Most times you don’t even notice. Plus over the life of the phone the subscription is much less than the cost of a high memory phone plus my photos are on the cloud and therefore backed up. I must admit with the 16 pro I got the 256 model, not because I needed it for photos or video but because I think it might be wise with new version of iOS with Apple intelligence as it might need more storage and reduce what little I have.
@@chrisak49 that’s interesting. I checked the photo information and you are right the f stop doesn’t changed but the odd thing is when you are composing the photo you can adjust the f stop but it makes no difference the final f stop at least on the details in the meta data. 🤷🏻♂️
I just tried it on the 1x lense and again changing the f stop or depth as it’s called doesn’t change the f stop in the meta data. Does this mean the depth is just a computer generated depth of field ?
I have an 14 Pro and no matter the lighting condition, it always takes 48MP if I choose so. It's a pity Apple changed that on the 16 Pro as you mentioned in the video (lower light always 12MP). I personally always shoot in 48MP cause the images turn out less over processed/sharpened/smartphonish unless I know I really don't need to edit the photo at all. Plus, if I want to crop later on, it gives me that flexibility.
The 16 Pro still shoots 48MP for the main 1x camera when you force it. He is talking about only the new 48MP ultrawide going down to 12MP in low light.
Yes, I do print sometimes. My first iPhone was the first one released with 8GB, but back then I would still use my DSLR over a phone. I wanted the phone for other reasons. But my current phone now that I do video %50 of the time has 1TB. Well the 14 pro max was the first 1TB so I kept it the same when I picked up the 16 pro max. And video take up so much more space then photos and thats the main reason for the bump in storage space. I will say the RAW and ProMax features can matter on the amount of data gathered but only if you are going to process the photos in post. Otherwise turn it off and save space on the phone if you only shooting for social media posts and will never print it. Ironically my first real move from film to DSLR was a Nikon D90 just to try the digital aspect and that was only a 12MP (but a bigger sensor size).
I previously had the iPhone 14 with 1TB storage space, for the reason of photos. But I used a PC to dump the photos on, to free up space, at the end of the day. Well…. The two just stopped communicating with each other and I frustratingly bit the bullet, and purchased a Macbook along with iCloud. No more storage problem now. All photos go to the cloud, and I never exceeded 200 gigs on my 1TB iPhone. So with the 16 I downgraded to the 512gig version. I don’t have a real fear of running out of storage space any longer, but know if need be - I’ll have to buy an external hard drive to move things around. 😂😂😂
Started with 8GB iphone 4, I have only bought the base storage aside from the 7 Plus Jet Black which was only available on the bigger storage. However since 14 Pro and now 16 Pro. I have opted for 256GB, I am using around 140GB. I do delete around 80-90% of my photos, my cloud storage is 428 GB which has been creeping much faster lately. I have printed a few, but it reminds me I need to print more.
4G storage on my first iPhone (the first one before they added a 8G option), 512G on my iPhone 16 Pro Max. Why did I buy the 16? For the camera button and the ultra-wide "improvement". So far it looks like the ultra wide is far from "ultra". Hope they fix some of this mess in software. From other reviews it looks like under bright light the ultra wide is better but quickly worsens when the light levels are lower. I'm fine paying an extra few $ for iCloud storage but Apple really should re-assess their storage tiers and prices.
Currently 256gb. I've never felt the need to print. I probably need to archive photos and videos or get more storage when it is time to upgrade. My first smart phone was iPhone 5 with 16gb. Prior to that I did have Nokia but never seriously used the camera for photos I wanted to keep.
iPhone 15 ProMax with 256gb which I think was the lowest I could get. I use SSD drive if I want more storage and delete photos out of the phone as I go.
That 48MP ultra wide sensor needs to be at-least 25% bigger with a larger aperture. Personally I would have rather have a much bigger 12MP senior for that ultra wide so it could film great night videos
I’m not a photographer, just an iPhone (Apple) fanboy. Since the 3GS, I typically have always went with the middle storage option. For example, my 16 Pro Max Natural Titanium is a 512G which was the middle between the base at 256G and a 1TB. My thought process is for photos, music, and apps along with other files takes up a lot of space. The one or two times I went with the base storage, I regretted it especially as the IOS software eats into that storage as well. Currently, on my 16 Pro Max, i have 27.12GB of data between the IOS and System Data … just to use the phone. Thus, I feel like Apple is skimping on customers with the base storage. If I were to have the 256GB, that near 30GB is taking a decent chunk out of my storage. Just my opinion. Lastly, you must have been speaking to costs not USD. I traded my 15 Pro Max 512GB which brought my cost down to nearly half the retail price.
On the main lens the 48MP are more important. Of course, you can't compare the 48MP of Sony's tiny quad-bayer iPhone sensor with a 48MP full-frame camera. This is a common misunderstanding of a quad-bayer sensor. Unfortunately used misleading in marketing. They are tiny little pixels, i.e. photo diodes, which are not quadrupled but combined with pixel binning to 12 MP to achieve better light sensitivity as you said. If the light is sufficient, you can get slightly more resolution in 48MP than in 12MP. I have taken thousands of shots with the 14 Pro main lens in museums and there is a difference, not huge but still significant, in resolution between 12MP and 48MP ProRAW shots from the 14 Pro sensor. For taking pictures of paintings, the 14 Pro in 48MP ProRAW is just enough for me to use it for this purpose instead of my full-frame mirrorless, the 12MP of the 14 Pro is not enough to recognise fine craquelure and the weave of the canvas when zoomed into the picture on a large monitor. I compared 48MP ProRAW shots from the 14 Pro with 48MP ProRAW shots from the 15 Pro, there was slightly better quality of the 14 Pro lens, even though they are the same on paper, so I downgraded to the 14 Pro. Storage is not an issue because I do not store these large files on the device or in iCloud.
100% mate. The reviewers that compare the two are just plain wrong. One in particular does it every year. Drives my nuts. This year he just said Apple was lying about the mp count on the 16, then proved it with the 15..
currently using iphone 15 pro.. sended my jpegs taken with my phone to a lab and had them printed..10*15 and some 13*18...they were nowhere close to ones I shot with my fuji...yes they look awesome on phone screen..but dont look that good when printed out..might be something due to heif files...I can literally tell which prints were taken with iphone and camera..by the way my fuji is just an old xt3
In Halide I can set the ultra wide to apple pro max and uses 48mp (no binning I guess). Would this make better Astrophotos (obviously with longer exposure)?
Will you test the S25 Ultra when it comes out? I'd love a side by side. I'll be able to upgrade from my S22 Ultra soon. I've been considering the iPhone 16 Pro Max. But I want to see what the S25 will do first since Samsung usually has better cameras.
I always go for the lowest storage capacity available. In the past I could just store my media on the microSD card. Nowadays I store them in the cloud.
I get it why you end up with 12mp when the conditions are not perfect. But what about macro? You can have an environment with much light when shooting macro. Why does it also end up with 12mp?
Since the phone is my main computer, I have to buy one with good storage nevertheless, but with USB-C (I am still in the lightning-universe) it might be easier to store photos and music etc on an external device.
I use proraw and the iphone is not a storage device i take photos transfer it to my Macbook and delete it on my phone …so it doesn’t matter how big the files are
So far disappointed with the 48mp ultra wide. The camera control button on the max is too far from the bottom and is hard to get the half press right and it’s not responsive to swipes enough. Ugh
I agree! I always think "I need more storage for my pictures & videos" now from 11/128GB I consider an upgrade to 15 or 16/256GB and my second thought is... is this enough space for 48MP camera? And I think is Marketing trick & also APPLE must consider a REAL DEAL Change because from 15 >> 16 people are paying HUGE amount of money to get nothing in return. This is the truth, new Iphone - nothing particular new or at least better for the customers
Started on the 3G iPhone as well as my first iPhone and yes now I’m on the 16 and obviously and the exception printing photos off the 512gb iPhone… but what everyone in the TH-cam algorithm wants to know as you may or may not have ever explained this… how do I get 30 secs on an iPhone? lol
current phone: Samsung s24ultra, 1TB the phone i have the MOST photos of memories from: Nokia Lumia 520 - no idea how much storage, i just transferred everything to my PC regularly current thing i take photos with: not my phone ... but a Sony 7CM2 ... because pretty much every phone take rubbish photos compared to a real camera. The downside is - you wont take snapshots with the Sony. (i actually still take silly snaps with the phone .. usually in fully automatic 12MP with typical Samsung aftereffects. The difference being .. for snapshots it is important whats in the photos, so they just need to be "good enough". For real photos is also matters how you took them - so a more mundane scene becomes exceptional) Other than that, i seriously have my most "treasured" memories taken on the little, cheap Lumia with - i think a 4MP camera? or is it only 2MP .. at that time, i really did not care.
I have the 1TB S24U, I'm almost tempted to wipe some of the older 50MP RAWs from my phone, it only has 25-something gig left :( The 50MP Raw pics are better detailed than the 12MP RAW, but by how much? Is it worth all that space and worse iso performance?... I'm not so sure.
25 gigs is still a lot, I would delete videos that don’t really have anything going on in it and same with photos, and you don’t always have to use the 50mp bc it’s only better like 50% of the time which is more but also takes up way more storage
The iphone storage is not worth beyond 256GB variant which allows you to shoor raw (the 128GB doesn't). It's far more worth it to have the 2 TB icloud subscription. Calculate in how many years it would become profitable to have bigger storage iphone -> you're more likely to upgrade to new variant by then. (not even mentioning all the advantages of icloud between devices and online.
No prints. 15 Pro Max, 256 GB, 197.29 GB available, 100 Apps, 24,639 Photos, 336 Videos, always shoot in ProRaw. No need to upgrade. Thanks for sharing.
I have 40,000 photos (apparently - that’s quite worrying) on my phone and only one has ever truly merited serious printing on A3+ high quality paper. I took that this summer on my aging 12 Pro Max. I’ve got the 16 PM on order and all these reviews are somewhat disappointing.
the iPhone 16 pro max is becoming a bit of a flop in terms of quality, camera issues, software issues, possible hardware issues, lag, all these limitations that apple keep implementing, like the screen refresh rate is now throttled to 80hz so you dont benefit the full 120hz, touch sampling on the display is terrible and bugg, the ultrawide is pretty crap in any scenario outside of ideal conditions, apple dont really care because we keep buying them, I will be getting rid of my 16 pro max.
Ordered, but waiting on delivery of a Pixel 9 Pro - optioned 256gb - a "PRO" phone should really come with 256gb as standard !!! Won't be used "professionally" so 256gb should be plenty. Dug out my old Moto X from 2014, 2gb ram,16gb storage, and 13mp camera 😂 - and it had a leather back, still feels good in the hand, maybe due a comeback 😁 ? Can't find the receipt for it, though 😂.
To answer the question is it about “put whatever you like here” or the money. It’s always about the money and Apple have mastered the art of removing money from your pocket.
I have problems with ProRaw photos with my 16 Pro Max, with main camera, they look pixelated and blurry when zoomed to the max. Reported to Apple Support already, i do not know if it its an ios 18 bug...
A few photography websites. Some say 10, others say 15 and some say 5. It wouldn’t just be commercial printing though. It would be those silly sticker printers and handheld printers etc
Yes just saying to husband as issues with phone I need to back up to large iCloud ($$) as phone a 512gb thought I cover storage but now they need to reset I need it back up. Hence need iCloud I will delete it after get sorted but annoying . Yep all about the $$$😩😂
@@deavo74 Hmm aka a delightfully stupid question. Are you obviously trying to be funny or are you just the type who comments unnecessarily on everything and everyone out of context? You only deserve the answer that I only print pictures of your mom.
ITB and never print anything. Backup to SSD and selectively to the cloud (not iCloud). What interests me now is 4K120 video and that my friend takes memory. Otherwise, a 128/256GB model would have been fine. I also upgraded so I get fast USB-C uploading to SSD. It is disappointing that the 48 Megapixel is getting a bad rap. Maybe the software updates/AI will improv things. I will finally get mine on Monday. 13->16 I think is the time to jump.

In Halide I can set the ultra wide to apple pro max and uses 48mp (no binning I guess). Would this make better Astrophotos (obviously with longer exposure)?
Never mind. Found out the limitation is OS wide.
Your beard is looking godly
Godly you reckon ;)

Will you test the S25 Ultra when it comes out? I'd love a side by side. I'll be able to upgrade from my S22 Ultra soon. I've been considering the iPhone 16 Pro Max. But I want to see what the S25 will do first since Samsung usually has better cameras.
128gb , i think so too , its all ABOUT the money , more gb or more iCloud
I always go for the lowest storage capacity available. In the past I could just store my media on the microSD card. Nowadays I store them in the cloud.
I get it why you end up with 12mp when the conditions are not perfect. But what about macro? You can have an environment with much light when shooting macro. Why does it also end up with 12mp?
It’s because it is cropping in on the middle pixels of the 48MP sensor for macros. It lets you get closer and delivers same or more detail supposedly.
I just posted a comment that I THINK explains this perfectly (even if it is a bit long winded)
It crops in on the 48mp macro to get closer to the object, so it comes out to a 12 mp image but it’s still better than the other iPhones 12mp mode
Since the phone is my main computer, I have to buy one with good storage nevertheless, but with USB-C (I am still in the lightning-universe) it might be easier to store photos and music etc on an external device.
not sure about 15 and 16 pros, my 14 pro 48mp has less sharpening and more natual image then shooting normal 12MP
Ugh
1tb iPhone 15pro max. Still waiting for the 16 pro max😕
256Gb 16 pro. Never print & I've still got my 8 Gb 3 too.
I agree with you bro 😊
New Moon will be here soon. hopefully the rain moves out so i can check the 16 out vs the Pixel 9 Pro astro.
Started on the 3G iPhone as well as my first iPhone and yes now I’m on the 16 and obviously and the exception printing photos off the 512gb iPhone… but what everyone in the TH-cam algorithm wants to know as you may or may not have ever explained this… how do I get 30 secs on an iPhone? lol
I heard it has to be in raw, and near a magpie
@@ScottBaker1you obviously always wanna be near a magpie, scull a VB 🍻 and legend does have it…. It can be done in jpeg…

current phone: Samsung s24ultra, 1TB
the phone i have the MOST photos of memories from: Nokia Lumia 520 - no idea how much storage, i just transferred everything to my PC regularly
current thing i take photos with: not my phone ... but a Sony 7CM2 ... because pretty much every phone take rubbish photos compared to a real camera. The downside is - you wont take snapshots with the Sony. (i actually still take silly snaps with the phone .. usually in fully automatic 12MP with typical Samsung aftereffects. The difference being .. for snapshots it is important whats in the photos, so they just need to be "good enough". For real photos is also matters how you took them - so a more mundane scene becomes exceptional)
Other than that, i seriously have my most "treasured" memories taken on the little, cheap Lumia with - i think a 4MP camera? or is it only 2MP .. at that time, i really did not care.
Thank you! The ultra wide and the zoom are becoming gimmicks…
I have the 1TB S24U, I'm almost tempted to wipe some of the older 50MP RAWs from my phone, it only has 25-something gig left :(
The 50MP Raw pics are better detailed than the 12MP RAW, but by how much?
3:01 🤣
512Gb on my iPhone 12pm. Never print.
Disappointed at poor performance of the 16PM ultra wide camera!
I seldom, if ever print my iPhone photos. I stayed with my iPhone 15ProMax, 256G
Thanks for watching you Bloody Legend!
1Tb 200Mp no I don't print
Im more than happy with my 15 pro max, i will skip 16 pro and wait for 17. PS: almost never printed pictures 😅
Rarely Print 1tb 16 Pro Max
Ordered, but waiting on delivery of a Pixel 9 Pro - optioned 256gb - a "PRO" phone should really come with 256gb as standard !!!
Won't be used "professionally" so 256gb should be plenty.
Dug out my old Moto X from 2014, 2gb ram,16gb storage, and 13mp camera 😂 - and it had a leather back, still feels good in the hand, maybe due a comeback 😁 ?
Can't find the receipt for it, though 😂.
Yeah but hows that camera button tho? pretty cool right? take less quality ultrawide photos in a more convenient way!
The camera button that I’ve disabled?
After all these years apple wont fix lag
To answer the question is it about “put whatever you like here” or the money. It’s always about the money and Apple have mastered the art of removing money from your pocket.
Oh they are all getting good at taking $ out
And 80% of those phone camera pictures are of food about to be eaten. lol iPhone 15 Pro Max - 512GB
I have problems with ProRaw photos with my 16 Pro Max, with main camera, they look pixelated and blurry when zoomed to the max. Reported to Apple Support already, i do not know if it its an ios 18 bug...
i have the same issue on my 16 pro max, on the 1X sensor, compared to my 15 pro, photos sometimes look shakey when zoomed in, and colors look mid
@@SuspiciousSalad Did you report that to Apple?
Nokia 7650 with 4mb. Now I have 65,536 times more at 256gb

10% of smartphone photos are printed? Sounds like an extremly high number. Where does this number come from?
A few photography websites. Some say 10, others say 15 and some say 5. It wouldn’t just be commercial printing though. It would be those silly sticker printers and handheld printers etc
@@ShayneMostyn I would assume it is less than 1%.
Yes just saying to husband as issues with phone I need to back up to large iCloud ($$) as phone a 512gb thought I cover storage but now they need to reset I need it back up. Hence need iCloud I will delete it after get sorted but annoying . Yep all about the $$$😩😂
Don’t print photo
Always buy 256GB
How did you spend 2 and a half grand on a 512 gig 16 pro? Math doesn’t add up.
0.001% printed is my estimate.
🙈512GB and never print nothing🤣
But do you ever print something?
Do you see and need the difference between 4k and 1080p?
