This is a wonderful story, thank you for it but as one who was never deployed into combat, I am humbled by all the comments from military people I am reading, including yours RocketShipRadio. I truly thank everyone here who served, with the most respectful and heartfelt thanks to those who willingly went into harms way to protect their buddies, those who could not protect themselves, and everyone here back at home. Thank you. Edited for spelling
I saw 5 combat tours, there is a universal truth about "Doc". When Doc cries we all cry, when Doc breaths we all breath, when Doc says there's hope we all find hope. That is often all you need to get through the worst day of your life. Thanks Doc.
That's a lot! I have friends who have been downrange many times as well. And my two best friends were Combat Medics. Thanks for your service! I'm a 100% P/T combat Army vet myself. OIF 5&6. 👍🏽
My first 2 deployments I was "Doc". Reenlisted to get out of medical but I STILL remember the 3 rules of being a combat medic. 1, Good men & women will die. 2, "Doc" can't save everyone. 3, "Doc" will kick open and March thru the very gates of HELL itself to break rules 1 & 2!
Combat is chaos incarnate. The side that wins is the one that was best able to control that chaos. Embracing the chaos rather then fighting it tends to make you more adaptable to the unexpected.
Humanity has this tactical weirdness that most aliens dont seem to get. Everyone is trained but while orders are orders, individual units have autonomy to make snap decisions and alter plans while keeping the main goal. It makes us ridiculously adaptable, and makes it hard for an enemy to really pin us down. And then our near stupid level of stubborn determination.
This story is inspiring and emotional at the same time, i just wish that the medical gears that the medics have are far more advanced than we have right now, coz it could have saved more lives.

@@osco4311 but just once. I have really come to hate that word. AI seems to be developing a new love for the word “precision”. I listened to a story in the last week or so where the AI said “smelled with precision”. I mean what the heck is that? :-)
War is chaos. Those who can operate most effectively in that chaos will win. Rigid cold logic and mathematical precision are good, however the ability to improvise and adapt on the fly is what determines the outcome of the battle. No plan survives first contact.
Exactly as you said, war is chaos, therefore you must improvise to adapt to the ongoing chaos. It's a cycle that sometimes is never ending till one side gives in.

I'm sorry. I wrote this comment earlier on mobile and had to edit it when I got to the desktop. But this story you are referring to, I wrote it because I was in the Army, and both my best friends were Medics, and we served in Iraq together. All of our stories are original. Many are brand-new side stories taken from a vast universe I created long ago. But no, we don't steal anything. There is no honor or pride in that. Everything is original.
