Wizards and Warriors animated fantasy documentary lore video series on the world of Middle-Earth - Lord of the Rings continues with the second video on the First Age. Previously we discussed the creation of the world of Tolkien, its powers and races and we see how and why the Elves became the enemies of the Dark Lord Melkor, who they called Morgoth, after their leader Fëanor cursed him for killing his father Finwë and stealing his prized possession - Silmarils. In this episode we see how the evil first rose in the world of Arda and will talk about Ungoliant and other evils, about the Valar and Maiar, about the Elves and their sub-groups - Vanyar, Ñoldor, Teleri, and Avari ( • Beginning of the Age -... ), while this video will show the continuation of the events. In Middle-Earth, Morgoth attacks the Teleri Elves in Doriath under Thingol and his allies Cirdan and Denethor starting the War of the Jewels with the First Battle of the Beleriand. Meanwhile, in the Valinor, the Noldor Elves of Feanor attack their Teleri relatives in the First Kinslaying in order to take their ships. Afterwards, Feanor and his sons travel to the Middle-Earth in order to fight Morgoth and take the Silmarils, leading to the battles of Dagor-nuin-Giliath and Lammoth and the death of Feanor.

I found it tough too but after constantly referring to the index, the information (lineages, geography, names, the gods etc) began to make more sense. I refer to the first half of the book which mainly talks about elves, dwarves, the valar/Maia, the enemy. Just when I thought I had a pretty good grasp of what was going on, men are introduced and the painstaking but rewarding process started all over again. That's one of the things that makes this book so awesome! There is so much to digest and learn!

You can criticize Feanor (and you should), but if he hadn’t come to Middle Earth for selfish reasons Morgoth would have likely conquered the entire continent.

    • @Крэйден_х
      @Крэйден_х ปีที่แล้ว +73

      And you shouldn't.
Feanor was a great ruler who was treated dishonorably by the Valar. They showed no compassion for the fact that he witnessed the death (or rather, a coma) of his mother. They gave him great knowledge, but regarded the Silmarils as THEIR PROPERTY (which is beautifully stated in the prophecy of Dagoth Dagorath). They provoked conflict between Feanor and Fingolfin, preparing the latter for the role of High King (simply because Fingolfin had a more accommodating character).
And the most disgusting thing is that when Finwe was killed, they not only did not take the side of Feanor, but tried to bypass his hereditary rights to make Fingolfin king, and send Feanor himself to Formen (since the 10-year period of his exile had not passed).
And instead of helping the Noldor in the fight against Morgoth, the Valar withdrew themselves, cursed Feanor and his descendants, and took up their heads only a few centuries later, when the population of Beleriand was sharply reduced.

    • @Крэйден_х
      @Крэйден_х ปีที่แล้ว +29

@@KostasTsilipakos Feanor was no more cursed than any of the other Quendi. Morgoth's lies were believed by many, including the Valar, and he very skillfully played on their goals, ambitions and so on. However, he could not persuade Feanor to his side.
As I said, BOTH FEANOR (who threatened his brother with a sword) and VALAR (who came up with all this idiocy with the statute of Miriel, which could deprive Feanor of hereditary rights) are to blame for the conflict with Fingolfin.
Nor was Fingolfin an innocent lamb. He craved power and the crown, though I believe he may have been motivated by such ambition due to pressure from the other Noldor.

Say anything you like about what drove Fëanor and Even Morgoth to have petty grievances.
They each had certain options they elected not to exercise: supplicating to Oromë, Varda, Manwë, or Eru in near that order, laying down their own will, begging for assistance.
With pride they took matters into their own hands.
It is subtly hinted that the Thrones of Varda and Manwë are like the greater more encompassing sense of which Amon Hen and even all the Palantirí are but as shadows; yet if the King and Queen need each other to have Full Sight and Hearing, then individually they are both less than Melkor.
They might have not had omniscience but they were wise in this:
Melkor was of an order equal to they. To strike at him would wound Arda very directly, because he was so involved in its making and because he poured his essence into it to bind it and he even closer together.
If Evil came about from the reticence of the Valar to aid the Noldor, it was first the case that Morgoth had all them under blackmail and worse.
It might have been chosen by the Valar to ask Eru's intervention immediately, instead of wait for the Downfall of Nûmenor.
But it was not hate of the Noldor but grief that their common enemy was too great for either Noldor or Valar that drove Manwë and Mandos.
Without the option to assail Morgoth directly, he had free reign to do Evil as he would, and he willed it.
The Sindar and Laiquendi could have been in Aman but chose themselves not to go. Abandoning them to Morgoth seems unkind and unnecessary but they did have Melian and she was protecting them in any case.
If the Noldor had stayed in Valinor and given up the Silmarils as though they had been slain, Morgoth would not be troubling them anymore, and it would be upon Melian and Thingol to send for aid by ship messenger.
I think they would have been able to beg Ossë Uinen and Ulmo to carry their cry the rest of the crossing.
The Kinslaying was Fëanor's choice as much as any of the Children had choices, Fëanor was obviously the Freest in Spirit of them all.
His Fire had a right to burn hot, but it could have been wiser, and his Hatred of Morgoth would have found love from the Valar, particularly Kementari, had he not murdered the Teleri, burnt ships which were stolen off the slain kin for the purpose of abandoning more kin.
Fëanor had a very troubled relationship with his family tree. It is hard to say he really considered any of his kin as he should have except maybe his father and mother alone.
He did two unloves to even his eldest son Maedhros:
Maedhros should not have been forced to burn the ships, and desiring to hold the Oath even after seeing it laid futile, with its new goal Not to recover what can't be recovered but Only to seek vengeance and death, was to bitterly enslave his sons in poor repayment for their fealty.
The Oath might have been amended at Fëanor's death to a humbled form recognizing the need for aid reconciliation and many miracles and begging the Valar's forgiveness.
Fëanor felt as you do but those thoughts came from Morgoth.
I can't promise the Silmarils would be returned but I could promise the Valar themselves would desire justice done to Morgoth. Fëanor was a fool to despise the only allies that could have availed.

    • @Крэйден_х
      @Крэйден_х ปีที่แล้ว +12

@@darthparallax5207 You are wrong from the beginning. The oath given by Feanor had already deprived his sons of the opportunity to act freely, to live as they saw fit. And not realizing that they were victims of circumstances and victims of the stupidity and carelessness of the Valar, further argument does not make any sense. Because Feanor is a tragic character, like his sons. And certainly not a villain.

He was met there by his dead father, and all the Teleri he had murdered, and all the Noldor who died for his selfish reasons. And almost all of the Elves to die after that were probably pretty angry with him too. Imagine all those many thousands of Elves died as a result of your quest for the silmarils, and now you have to walk among their spirits for a VERY LONG TIME.

With many Elves being almost as old as the world itself (and a good number being older than the literal sun and moon), The Elves of the First Age are in a weird way in a kind of teenager-phase. They're cocky, arrogant, and eager to prove themselves.
Then, they are BRUTALLY humbled and broken. In the Second Age, bloodied and more mature, they settle for a more stable life, but still have the desire to do great things and innovate, such as Celebrimbor and the Rings of Power. And then they face more problems with Sauron and the breaking of their kingdoms.
In a way, when we meet the Elves in the Lord of the Rings, they are collectively kind of in their elderly stage. They mostly look back to the past for their great achievements, not really expecting too much of the future. And they have lost much of the confidence and arrogance they had in the past. Hell, they even start to "retire" to Valinor.
One individual who exemplifies this is Galadriel. She has a personal arc that starts with joining Feanor, and ends with managing to resist the desire to take the ring from Frodo.

Nah. Better to invent a story about warrior Galadriel and the forging of the Rings of Power, even though everyone already knows that tale and how it ends. Brilliant!

I find it amusing how Morgoth started a completely unnecessary war and jeopardized his control over middle earth because he wanted some beautiful but ultimately useless Jewels. I can see why Saron/Halbrand got disillusioned with his master's stupid and insane desires. Morgoth may have been one of the strongest beings in the Tolkien mythos, but he was ultimately a child having a very destructive temper tantrum when his dad, Eru, didn't give him a toy (the flame imperishable).

Overall this video was far more accurate than the last, but I still have some pointers, with the 5th one being the worst:
    1. This is a nitpick, but instead of having the Two Trees on the map it should just be Ezehollar, the hill upon which they stood. The Two Trees are dead by this point.
    2. The map of Beleriand was pretty good, but the Girdle of Melian (and the realm of Doriath) did not extend so far northward to the mountains (Ered Gorgoroth). The land between Doriath and that mountain range was known as Nan Dungortheb, the Valley of Dreadful Death, where Ungoliant spawned many spiders.
    3. Blatant typo. It is the Firth of Drengist, not Frengist.
    4. May have been mentioned in previous video, but I heard no mention of the Thangorodrim.
    5. The so-called "Battle of Lammoth" is a fabrication for this video. I don't know where they read about it, but it doesn't exist in the Silmarillion. In "Of the Return of the Noldor" page 108-109, Fingolfin's arrival into Beleriand is associated with the rising of the Sun, which caused all Orcs to retreat to Angband in fear of the light. Fingolfin marched unopposed to Dor Daedeloth but then withdrew to Hithlum when he realized that the Thangorodrim could not be assailed.
That being said, pronunciation improved substantially from last video.

Feanor gets all the blame, but the Valar man, the Valar...
First they just release Melkor, ok he did his time but at least keep a look on him.
Then he destroys the Trees and runs off with no resistance nor chase from the Valar, why??
Then he proceeds to enslave the Middle Earth for ages but the Valar are more focused on holding their grudge vs Feanor than helping a mostly innocent continent against their brother.
Yes Feanor messed up at the Kinslaying but hadn't it been for him and for the Noldor, Morgoth would have expanded his influence to all of Middle Earth unchallenged, and who knows if the Valar would have been able to stop him by the time they realized the danger...

    • @michael1345

The whole business of there being no Sun or Moon during the start of the War of Jewels makes it hard to picture it properly, I guess it is supposed to have happened lit only by starlight. Maybe the Elves themselves are meant to have also glowed with light at the time.

  • @Noleme
    @Noleme ปีที่แล้ว +2

A minor but important context for the First Kinslaying:
While the 2nd host followed the banner of Fingolfin, it was his son Fingon (who was close in friendship to the House of Finwe) who commanded the van, and it was this vanguard that helped decided the Battle. Had Fingolfin or Turgon, the son that most aligned with his father in temper and lack of desire to leave Aman, been in command the Second host may have hesitated to join in the kinslaying.
Fingon supported the choice to rebel and came to the aid of the sons of Finwe more than once out of love rather than strictly out of duty. Fingolfin did so to protect his people from Feanor and to not break with his oath to not supplant his brother, neither of which would have been enough to get Fingolfin to commit to killing other elves without at least getting a better sense of what was going on.

‘Fair shall the end be,’ he cried, ‘though long and hard shall be the road! Say farewell to bondage! But say farewell also to ease! Say farewell to the weak! Say farewell to your treasures - more still shall we make! Journey light. But bring with you your swords! For we will go further than Tauros, endure longer than Tulkas: we will never turn back from pursuit. After Morgoth to the ends of the Earth! War shall he have and hatred undying. But when we have conquered and have regained the Silmarils that he stole, then behold! We, we alone, shall be the lords of the unsullied Light, and masters of the bliss and the beauty of Arda! No other race shall oust us!’
Then Fëanor swore a terrible oath. Straightway his seven sons leaped to his side and each took the selfsame oath; and red as blood shone their drawn swords in the glare of the torches.
‘Be he foe or friend, be he foul or clean,
brood of Morgoth or bright Vala,
    Elda or Maia or Aftercomer,
    Man yet unborn upon Middle-earth,
neither law, nor love, nor league of swords,
dread nor danger, not Doom itself,
shall defend him from Fëanor, and Fëanor’s kin,
whoso hideth or hoardeth, or in hand taketh,
    finding keepeth or afar casteth
a Silmaril. This swear we all:
death we will deal him ere Day’s ending,
woe unto world’s end! Our word hear thou,
    Eru Allfather! To the everlasting
Darkness doom us if our deed faileth.
On the holy mountain hear in witness
and our vow remember, Manwë and Varda!’
*Feanor and his host arrive at the shores of Valinor*
Feanor: "Oh ye, this Ocean exists ... so, what now?"
    Guyladriel: "We could swim!"
Feanor: " ... Ye right and on our way across the sea we might just happen to stumble across Morgoth on a raft haha. Ok lets murder those Teleris over there and steal their ships!"

Melkor steals the Silmarils, destroys the two trees and causes untold suffering in his effort to destroy the world, and the other Valar just sit around. "Oh, that's just Melkor being Melkor. You guys just let him be." Then they hinder the Noldor and curse Feanor for wanting to do something about this guy who is actively destroying the world. Meanwhile, Melkor is slaughtering elves in Middle Earth, and the Valar are just sitting in their circle jerk in Valinor, not caring. They actually have to be BRIBED to intervene. F those guys.

""And Olwë called upon Ossë, but he came not, for it was not permitted by the Valar that the fight of the Noldor should be hindered by force. But Uinen wept for the mariners of the Teleri; and the sea rose in wrath against the slayers, so that many of the ships were wrecked and those in them drowned.""
